In the new 2019, Xiaomi decided to launch a new business policy for its Redmi smartphones. This series to Redmi becoming an independent brand. Very similar steps have already been taken by some Chinese companies, such as Huawei with Honor series or ZTE with Nubia series of smartphones.
Today we will talk about the new budget smartphone called Xiaomi Redmi Y3. It was presented the other day and is already on sale in Indian. The prices start at $140 for version 3/32 GB of memory.
Since the launch of the previous model Redmi Y2, about one year has passed and the new Redmi Y series has received significant changes. The design of the Xiaomi Redmi Y3 is very similar to the Xiaomi Redmi Note 7. There is a big difference between the technical characteristics between them.
Redmi Y3 got a large 6.26-inch screen with HD resolution, Snapdragon 632 processor, 3/32 and 4/64 GB of memory, 4000 mAh battery and the latest version of the Android 9.0 operating system. The main feature of the smartphone is the presence of a 32-megapixel front camera.

Xiaomi Redmi Y3: Unboxing
Like the previous Y2 series, the new Redmi Y3 received a red small box, on the front of the model the name was written and the inscription 32 MP self-camera was written.
On the back of the box are the main technical specs.
Inside the box, I found the following items – an envelope with documentation, a SIM needle, and a silicone transparent case. Below is a smartphone in a protective film, micro USB charging cable and 10W power adapter.
As for a budget smartphone from $140, the Redmi Y3 received standard equipment. I was even glad to see a protective case. With unpacking figured out, now let’s move on to the ergonomics of the Redmi Y3.
Xiaomi Redmi Y3: Design and Appearance
The company has made great progress in all areas with the Redmi Y3 smartphone. But compared to the Redmi Note 7 with a glass back panel, the Xiaomi Redmi Y3 has a plastic back case. Also, note that the front of the device is covered with a curved 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protective glass.
As for the design, we noticed that the Xiaomi Redmi Y3 is similar or almost identical to the Redmi Note 7 model. When the device is received in hand, the feeling is very good and you can easily feel the quality of the product, which is at the level of a high middle class.
Xiaomi Redmi Y3 comes with a 6.26-inch screen with a resolution of HD +, which has a water drop notch above the display. As already mentioned, the screen has 2.5D curved glass, and this time we know that Corning Gorilla Glass is fifth-generation scratch protection.
Above the screen, there is a selfie camera on the screen. Also above which there is a rather wide opening of the speakers, and to the right of it there is an almost invisible proximity sensor. As for the notification LED, it is located at the bottom of the screen.
The top edge is designed for a 3.5 mm audio jack, another hole for an additional microphone and infrared port.
At the bottom of the Redmi Y3 in the test, there are microphone holes and speakers, and the old micro USB port is located between them.
All physical keys are located on the right side of the device, and on the left side, there is a slot for two SIM cards and one MicroSD card.
A fingerprint sensor is located in the upper center position of the back panel, which effectively and accurately unlocks this smartphone, at least 90% of attempts. While the dual rear camera module is already standard vertically and located in the upper left corner.
Just below the dual rear camera is the inscription “32MP SELFIE AI DUAL CAMERA”, which tells us a lot about the photographic capabilities of this smartphone. In the center of the back panel is the new Redmi logo.
Let’s also mention that the Redmi Y3 in our analisis has roughly the same dimensions as its predecessor, which is 158.7 x 75.6 x 8.5 mm, and its weight is 18 grams. Thanks to the slightly rounded edges, it is really comfortable in the hands.
The price for Redmi Y3 and Redmi Note 7 is almost identical, but the latter has several advantages over the Redmi Y series. This is a glass case, instead of plastic and Type-C port for fast charging.
Xiaomi Redmi Y3: Screen
The screen was 6.26 inches and the main change is the difference in the design of the water drop notch on the screen. In the ratio of the screen, the smartphone received 19: 9 and a resolution of 720 x 1520 pixels and provides a density of 269 pixels per inch.
In addition, Xiaomi lists the NTSC 84% color gamut, 450 nits brightness and 1500: 1 contrast, and they are all identical to the characteristics of the screen, as in last year’s model.
In the display settings, you can further adjust the contrast and several different color profiles. Each user can choose a color profile that matches his taste. Users can play themselves and determine the contrast or warmth of the screen colors in warm, cool or standard shades.
Also, who likes to read on his smartphone in the late night hours, a “reading mode” or reading options are available, which, when the screen is turned on, reduce the transmission of blue color. The light becomes warmer and more yellowish and is much easier to read in the dark.
The standard feature of the smartphone Xiaomi is to support better visibility in the sun. There is also another handy addition – the ability to unlock the device using a dual touch screen. The visibility of the content on the screen in the sun is very good, and the screen monitors the price rank of this smartphone at a very high level.
In general, as for its price, the quality of the screen is good, but again, comparing with Redmi Note 7, it has a number of advantages. Such as Full HD + screen resolution, slightly larger screen size and 19.5: 9 aspect ratio.
Xiaomi Redmi Y3: Hardware and Performance
Xiaomi Redmi Y3 in our test comes with a proven and best-in-class hardware configuration that we could see on middle-class smartphones.
The basis of this configuration is not just an excellent Qualcomm Snapdragon 632 processor. This processor model has been encountered in our tests several times and has proven to be excellent, fast and energy efficient.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 632 can be described as an energy-saving element of the processor of the middle class, which does not disappoint with its capabilities. This processor in combination with graphics and RAM provides excellent performance, which is not far behind the flagship smartphones.
Recall that the Qualcomm Snapdragon 632 is based on 14-nm technology and is a 64-bit processor, four of which Kryo 250 processors operate at 1.8 GHz and the other four at a clock frequency of 1.8 GHz.
The chipset comes with an Adreno 506 graphics processor.
As for the memory, Xiaomi Redmi Y3 offers two options; the weakest version with 3 and 32 GB of internal memory and the version with 4 and 64 GB of internal memory. If you have not enough memory, you can increase with a memory card up to 512GB.
As expected, this hardware configuration has proven its ability to play any complex game smoothly and comfortably.
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 632 processor is one of our favorite mid-range processors, which offers power-saving features with excellent performance.
The benchmark test results are somewhat weaker than those of the Snapdragon 800 series flagship processor, however, judging by the fact that this smartphone works, the difference is almost impossible to see.
What matters most in real day-to-day use is that this processor, along with the hardware, provided us with really great user experience.
Xiaomi Redmi Y3: Software
Xiaomi Redmi Y3 in our analisis runs on the Android 9.0 Oreo operating system, over which the MIUI V10 interface is installed.
One of these new AI features is monitoring user habits and is called AI Preload. The new AI Preload feature keeps track of how the user is using the device, so that individual applications automatically start at a specific time, resulting in faster and more convenient use.
MIUI likes someone and who doesn’t, but the fact is that MIUI 10 on the Redmi Y3 smartphone works extremely smoothly and quickly and offers a pleasant user experience. About 2 GB of RAM is available without open source background applications, which is enough for comfortable use.
Xiaomi Redmi Y3: Camera
I do not open the box manufacturer Xiaomi emphasizes that this phone Redmi Y3 is designed for selfie lovers. Nevertheless, the 32-megapixel camera is an excellent sensor for high-quality photos on social networks.
Both the rear and front camera have a portrait mode, and you can get very good photos with a bokeh effect, although there is only one camera.
The resulting selfie photos are of excellent quality, and there is support for intelligent modes (AI Beautify and AI Portrait Selfies). The photos are always the best when they are taken in well-lit conditions.
The main camera Xiaomi Redmi Y3 received a standard 12-megapixel camera with f/2.2 aperture with the addition of a 2-megapixel second sensor for bokeh photos. Under these two cameras, there is a dual LED flash. Otherwise, this dual rear camera is combined with PDAF autofocus and electronic image stabilization.
The camera application is essentially the same as in other models of the company. The most interesting features are the AI segment of the camera and an interesting novelty, namely the mode of shooting in the night mode for night photos, which delighted us.
Thanks to this feature, users can make HDR photos at night, and the end result is excellent. The photos are really bright, despite the poor external lighting, and the quality of the parts is at a very good level. The “Night mode” function allows you to take several photos with different exposures and combine them into one bright image with a minimum noise level.
The smartphone Xiaomi Redmi Y3 with dual rear camera boasts the ability to capture video content in FHD resolution at 30 or 60 frames per second.
Xiaomi Redmi Y3: Sound
Xiaomi Redmi Y3 in this area basically remained the same as its predecessor. The lower part is a hole for the speaker, capable of reproducing a loud, rich and great sound “all in one.”
Redmi Y3 is equipped with an old micro USB port, but despite this, it is equipped with a 3.5 mm audio output. Given that the Redmi Y3 does not belong to the flagship class, so the company did not equip it with another speaker at the top to get stereo sound.
Xiaomi Redmi Y3: Communication
Xiaomi Redmi Y3 supports two SIM-cards simultaneously, which can work in 4G LTE networks. On the left side of the device, we can find a tray for two Nano SIM cards and one MicroSD card and you can use two Nano SIM cards and one MicroSD card at the same time.
In addition to supporting 4G LTE networks and dual SIM support (Dual Standby), Redmi Y3 in the test also comes with standard voice communication VoLTE HD (Voice over LTE) over a 4G / 4G + network, which guarantees the best sound quality when calling.
As for signal reception, volume, and sound quality, when testing a smartphone, I did not reveal any problems.
Xiaomi Redmi Y3 also comes with an infrared port located at the top of the device. With it, you can control various household appliances through the appropriate application.
As for positioning, Redmi Y3 supports GPS, AGPS, GLONASS, and Beidou, and positioning works quickly and flawlessly.
Xiaomi Redmi Y3: Battery
One of the great strengths of the Redmi Y smartphone is, of course, their irreplaceable lithium-ion battery, which in this case has a capacity of 4000 mAh. Excellent autonomy for many years has been one of the main features of the smartphone in this series.
The Xiaomi Redmi Y3 in the analisis with the exception of a large-capacity battery can also appreciate its stunning Qualcomm Snapdragon 632 power-saving processor and HD screen resolution.
Throughout the day, using the Redmi Y3 smartphone, which includes email, social networks, surfing, games, at the end of the day, 50 to 60% of the battery charge will remain, and we could get a day and a half to two days of autonomy without problems.
The battery consumption when playing games and watching videos was acceptable. Half an hour in a complex game, such as War Robots or Real Racing 3, consumed about 8% of the battery, while watching YouTube videos spent about 4% of the battery for half an hour.
The charging speed of the smartphone Xiaomi Redmi Y3 with the appropriate charger (5V/2A) and micro USB port was about 2.5 hours.
Xiaomi Redmi Y3: Conclusion and Reviews
The Redmi Y series of smartphones from the popular Chinese company Xiaomi is not something new and unknown. We all understand that Redmi smartphones were synonymous with quality, but also a good price. This has not changed even now when Redmi Y has become a separate brand of smartphones. Everything is set to a new and even better level. Xiaomi uses the same marketing strategy to introduce the Redmi brand in an independent market, which he also used with the POCO brand presentation.
From our review of Xiaomi Redmi Y3, I can draw conclusions that this is a stylish smartphone for the selfie-photography lover. It is well suited for a mod or girls who like to post photos from Instagram or other social networks. Since the 32-megapixel camera contributes to this.
On the other hand, if you do not need a good front-facing camera, then Redmi Note 7 will definitely be what you need. Since Redmi Note 7 has a number of advantages over Redmi Y3. Such as the glass case, Type-C connector, Full HD screen resolution, a more powerful Snapdragon 660 processor and a 48-megapixel rear main camera.
Other features, such as the 4000 mAh battery capacity and the Android 9.0 (Pie) operating system with MIUI 10, remained unchanged.
Despite all the above, I do not want to say that Xiaomi Redmi Y3 is a bad smartphone. It is well-built, the quality of materials is at a good level, the smooth operation of the user interface will delight you throughout the day.
