I had one interesting gaming laptop on my test and guess which brand? Naturally, this is the most popular company – Xiaomi. Previously, Xiaomi has already presented a gaming laptop, but now we will talk about the Redmi sub-brand and the device was named Xiaomi Redmi G.
In this review, I will tell you about the main features of a laptop from Redmi. You will also find out how much it outperforms its competitors from top brands such as Asus, MSI, Lenovo, and others.
But first about the price, now you can get the Redmi G device at a rather attractive price for only $1000. As a gaming laptop with powerful technical features, this is a pretty small price tag.
Since this is a gaming laptop, the appearance of the device has received an unusual design. It is also difficult to call the laptop compact because it uses a large 16.1-inch screen, Intel i5-10300H with 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of SSD memory is responsible for the performance.
So I want to start my full and detailed review as soon as possible and the first thing I will do is check how the laptop is shipped and what accessories to expect out of the box.

Unboxing and packaging
Like most large-sized equipment, the appearance of the box is very simple and not very presentable.
That is, the box is made of ordinary cardboard and here I did not see any drawings of the device, but only the name of the company and model.
Inside the box, I found well-packaged components – a power cable, a 180W power adapter, and of course the laptop itself. Note that the laptop was well protected in dense foam.
As for a regular laptop, this is a typical package, like other models from the Redmi brand. But since this is a gaming laptop, I would like to get additional accessories like a wireless mouse or cooling stand. But this you will not find in the Redmi G.
Design, build quality and materials
Since this is a gaming laptop, there is no question of small weight and dimensions. In the case of Xiaomi Redmi G, these are 373 x 265 x 23.5 mm dimensions and weigh about 2.5 kg. In terms of total weight, the device weighs 3.15 kg with the charging cable and adapter.
The entire body of the laptop is made of high-quality plastic that does not leave fingerprints. The outside of the screen got a pretty interesting drawing. Although this drawing did not go to some users, it seemed to me, albeit strict, but rather practical.
Next, I tested the laptop opening test with one hand. And the result was positive. This is not surprising since the weight of the Redmi gaming laptop is not small.
I found a full-size keyboard under the screen. I want to say that this is one of the most comfortable keyboards I have used lately. The keys are very easy to press, so for gaming purposes, you will definitely like it.
In addition, the keyboard has received LED backlighting, which gives the device a gaming style and convenience in the dark. The backlight itself has two modes of operation.
I can also highlight the convenience of the location of the keys and the correct font of letters. I also liked that the letters WASD are highlighted with a rim.
The touchpad works well for a gaming laptop. It has a fairly large area and has a good response to actuation. You can also easily control it for gaming purposes or use gestures in the Windows 10 operating system.
I also note that the plastic near the keyboard and touchpad is as matte as on the outer surface of the laptop. Not only does it look durable, but it also doesn’t leave fingerprints on the case, which is very important for many users.
As for external interfaces, the laptop from Redmi received on the right side – one Type-C connection and two USB 3.2 ports of the second generation. Nearby there is a hole through which hot air comes out.
On the opposite side, there is one standard USB 2.0 and a headphone jack, that is, a 3.5 mm audio jack. And here there is a similar hole, which is necessary for high-quality cooling.
On the back there are still the following connections – this is a gigabit Ethernet connection, Mini DP 1.4, HDMI 2.0, and a power port. As I already noted, the power port received support for fast charging thanks to a 180W power adapter.
There are large air vents in the bottom of the case, as well as rubber feet for confident stability on the work surface. In addition, two speakers are located at the edges of the lower part of the case. At the same time, the sound quality of the speakers is at a very good level. They play loudly, and the quality is of an appropriate level with elements of bass and clear sound.
Okay, I’m pretty much interested in the new gaming laptop from Redmi. Yes, maybe due to external factors, it did not receive LED color backlighting, but for me, it is not as important as a minimalistic simple appearance. In addition, the materials of workmanship are of a good standard and the same goes for the build quality. Now let’s tell you what I think about the screen.
Screen and picture quality
I already mentioned that the Xiaomi Redmi G uses a large 16.1-inch screen. It received a typical Full HD resolution or 1080 x 1920 pixels. The aspect ratio is 16: 9 and IPS technology is used here.
The bezels around the screen on the right-left and top are very minimal, but at the bottom of the screen, there is a rather massive bezel. Besides, the lower frame houses the model’s logo and a 1-megapixel camera for video calls. I can’t say that the camera has a good location, but it shoots pretty well.
Now about the screen, as my practice has shown, a brightness level of 300 nits will be enough for use in a bright sunny room. Even small text is readable without any problems.
I also ran the Spyder5Pro benchmark and here I can check the screen color results. For example, the sRGB score scored 95%, although the manufacturer promises 100%. But even 95% is also not a bad result, as for a gaming laptop.
The most important feature of the screen is the 144Hz refresh rate. When I played games, the refresh rate was very smooth. In practice, I did not find the soapy effect, and the picture was clear and contrasting.
Performance, benchmark tests, and OS
I am always happy to test new laptops from Xiaomi, as they have new processors in their performance. The Xiaomi Redmi G gaming laptop was equipped with a modern Intel Core i5-10300H processor. This chipset was introduced in the first half of 2020. It also received quad cores with eight threads with a clock frequency of 2.5 to 4.5 GHz.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX1650Ti 4G is responsible for the graphics accelerator. And as the practice has shown, modern games for Redmi G will not be a problem. I ran games like GTA, The Witcher and I was completely satisfied with the result. Games started quickly and without any lag, and the playing process itself was smooth and stable.
The laptop uses 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of built-in SSD format. As the memory speed test showed, the read speed is 2387 MB per second and 1851 MB per second the write speed.
Naturally, I ran a series of performance tests with various benchmarks. You can see the results of all tests below. From myself, I can say that the results are not the highest, but they are also not the weakest. As for an inexpensive gaming laptop, you can not only play heavy games but also edit videos or edit photos.
Let’s say it takes about 18 seconds of your time to render one minute of 4K video, which is a very high number.
Now let’s talk about the operating system. Out of the box, the Xiaomi Redmi G laptop comes with a Chinese version of Windows 10. But changing the language to another will not be possible. Therefore, it is one of the big problems for the new laptop from Redmi. That is, you will have to reinstall the OS yourself to the global version, where multilingualism is supported, and not just Chinese.
Of course, for me, this problem was not critical, but for many users, it can be a little scary when choosing a laptop. But I guess that a real gamer can easily cope with reinstalling the operating system since it will not take more than half an hour of your time.
As for the user interface, everything is standard here as for Windows 10. All functions work properly, and any tasks or applications open with lightning speed. I did not find any problems with using the laptop.
I also forgot to talk about overheating. At maximum workload, when I played games at maximum graphics, the processor temperature rose to 95 degrees Celsius. And the GPU is up to 78 degrees Celsius. The temperature of the case on the keyboard has heated up to 45 degrees in the lower part of the case near the arrows.
The same goes for the noise from coolers. During maximum load, the noise from the cooler was quite loud at about 55 dB. Therefore, playing comfortably with such noise is definitely not a pleasure.
It’s worth noting that wireless connections have received a good upgrade. That is, Xiaomi Redmi G uses modern Wi-Fi 6 technology and Bluetooth 5.1 versions. In addition, the laptop received a gigabit wired connection, but I see no point in it since Wi-Fi 6 will allow for fast data transfer speeds.
Battery and run time
The built-in battery on the Xiaomi Redmi G gaming laptop was 55 Wh. This is a fairly high figure, which will provide continuous work on a single charge up to 8 hours of use.
Of course, in my test with various modes of use, the device was discharged in 5.5 hours. But I ran various heavy benchmark tests, played games, and even rendered videos.
The positive side is fast charging thanks to the 180W power adapter. The full charging time will be about 1 hour and believe me it’s very fast.
Conclusion, reviews, pros, and cons
The Xiaomi Redmi G is a good gaming laptop that has gotten both positive and negative sides.
For example, I liked the materials used in the device and the build quality. Then, the screen cover opens with one hand. But the negative side is a lot of weight and not small dimensions.
I can also highlight good performance thanks to the new processor from Intel and a large amount of memory in the 16/512 GB version. In addition, the good performance of the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 Ti graphics card will allow you to play heavy and modern games.
Another feature of the Redmi G is its screen. The 16.1-inch display with Full HD resolution and 144Hz refresh rate will surely surprise you. Also, I really liked the full-size backlit keyboard.
Of the minuses, I can single out – this is the high heating of the processor about 95 degrees, as well as 45 degrees of heating of the case during games or heavy processes. Even under high loads, especially in games, the cooling fans make a little noise. In addition to a small minus, I can attribute it to the Chinese version of the Windows 10 operating system.
When compared with competitors, the pricing policy is almost on the same level. Among the main competitors, I can attribute them to the HP Pavilion Gaming 16 a0020nr, MSI GF75, Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3i, and others. On my own, I note that the Redmi G laptop is slightly superior in the technical stuffing to all the listed competitors.
Price and where to buy cheaper?
Now you can buy the Xiaomi Redmi G gaming laptop at a rather interesting price – $1009.99 with a 42% discount.
But the price is an auction and there is a limited number of devices left, so if you are interested, then do not miss your chance. Since a quality gaming laptop is hard to find at a decent price and good specs.
