About a month ago, Xiaomi introduced the next flagship smartphone model in the Mi Mix line. Today this is the fourth generation of the device with the following name Xiaomi Mi Mix 4.
I only recently managed to test a smartphone from Xiaomi. Also in this article you will learn about the build quality, design features, I will show you the benchmark test results, play games and show you sample photos.
In terms of cost, the Xiaomi Mi Mix 4 currently has a price tag of just over $900. This is not the lowest price for a flagship device. But let’s check the main features of a smartphone in order to understand whether the device is worth your attention at all or not.
First of all, I want the most important feature of a smartphone. This is the presence of a hidden selfie camera under the display’s smartphone. This is the first device with such a feature and I can’t wait to test the quality of the front camera in real life.
Other features include this ceramic case on the back of the device. The smartphone also received a large 6.67-inch AMOLED screen with a 120 Hz refresh rate. At the same time, the top-end processor from Qualcomm, namely the Snapdragon 888+, is responsible for the performance.
Naturally, the smartphone has received many other qualities. Therefore, let me start my first acquaintance with unboxing, and then I will conduct a full and in-depth testing.

Unboxing and packaging
The new model of the smartphone Xiaomi Mi Mix 4 is delivered in a rather non-standard packaging. But if we compare with the previous generation, namely the third, then the dimensions of the package remain the same.
It is a square black box with gold letters. There is nothing on the front part except for the brand name and model. But the back of the box shows some information about the manufacturer.
During unpacking, I was able to find the following components, such as the smartphone itself in a protective transport film. At the same time, all other elements were separately completed in small boxes. These are instructions for use, a Type-C charging cable, a SIM tray needle, a 120 W power adapter and a Type-C to 3.5 mm headphone jack adapter. I also found the simplest transparent silicone case.
Design, build quality and materials
Before we talk about design, let’s talk about the existing color options. There are three colors to choose from – white, gray and black. At the same time, regardless of the color of the device, the materials of manufacture will be the same for all color options.
For example, if we talk about the back of the smartphone Xiaomi Mi Mix 4, then it was made of ceramic. In fact, this kind of material is rarely found on mobile devices. But if we talk about past generations, then it is ceramics that have always been used from the first generation to the current one.
It is also worth mentioning that the frames of the smartphone were made of aluminum. But the front of the device received a protective Gorilla Glass Victus.
At the same time, the dimensions of the new generation device remained not very large – 162.6 x 75.4 x 8 mm and a weight of about 228 grams. But on the back of the case is the main camera module, which, in turn, protruded quite a lot. Therefore, the thickness of the case, taking into account the camera, was about 11.5 mm, which is not so small.
During my testing, it was very comfortable to hold the device with one hand. I note that the edges of the smartphone were well rounded and this will allow you to use the device very easily. But you will need to use the 6.67-inch screen only with two hands.
As for the build quality, I did not find any special complaints during use. For example, all buttons were pressed with good responsiveness and they had no extraneous backlash.
Although the new generation of the Xiaomi Mi Mix 4 smartphone did not have full protection against water and dust. But the manufacturer has installed basic splash protection under the IP53 standard. It’s a little strange that the flagship model of the device does not have full protection against water.
On the right side of the smartphone from Xiaomi, there are familiar buttons for everyone. This is the power button and volume rocker. The bottom end has a Type-C port for charging or headphones, a microphone hole, a main speaker and a slot for dual nano SIM cards.
At the same time, an infrared port and an additional microphone were installed on the upper end of the device. But on the left side, there is nothing.
As I said, the back of the smartphone received a main camera module of three sensors and an LED flash. In addition to the above elements, I did not find anything else. You can ask me for the fingerprint scanner. So it was built into the screen sensor, and it worked pretty well. That is, the smartphone was unlocked quickly and, most importantly, accurately.
In addition to the fingerprint scanner, there was a front-facing camera on the front of the device under the smartphone screen. This is an unusual solution, since even while examining in the sun, I still did not notice the front camera sensor on the screen. For me it was a little surprising, but I’ll talk about the quality of the camera a little later.
I can also highlight that the conversational speaker is used as an additional one. Therefore, the device supports stereo sound, and this sound was created in collaboration with Harman Kardon. I think it will not be a secret for you that the new smartphone model Xiaomi Mi Mix 4 had no problems with sound at all. Since the sound was quite dynamic and had a good bass value.
Screen and image quality
I have already said that the screen size on the new smartphone model Xiaomi Mi Mix 4 is typical, as on most devices from this manufacturer, namely 6.67 inches. This is a standard Full HD + screen or with a resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels and an aspect ratio of 20: 9. At the same time, the pixel density per inch was 395 PPI, which is very good.
As for other features, the device uses an AMOLED matrix, and it showed itself from a very positive side. That is, the color reproduction was very rich and realistic. In addition, the device has a high contrast ratio, so the blacks had good depth.
If we talk about the maximum brightness value, then the screen received a brightness of about 800 nits. During my testing, I could easily observe the information on the screen even outdoors in sunny weather. At the same time, the PWM from the AMOLED screen does not exceed 20% and this is the most worthy indicator. For example, after my testing, I did not have severe eye fatigue, as is usually the case on other models of smartphones with an AMOLED matrix.
Okay, there are other features as well, like the 120Hz refresh rate. But in the settings you can only select 60 Hz or 120 Hz, but I did not observe an intermediate value at 90 Hz. There are also features such as HDR10 + and Dolby Vision. The bezels around the screen were quite minimal and the usable area occupied by the screen was about 87.6%.
Performance, benchmarks, games and OS
Since the new model of the smartphone Xiaomi Mi Mix 4 belongs to the flagship category of devices, the processor was corresponding to this Snapdragon 888+. It was built using a 5nm process and performed very well in synthetic tests. But until I get down to the benchmarks, let’s go over the cores briefly. The smartphone has eight cores on board, however, as on most smartphones, only the frequency and architecture were not the same as everyone else’s. For example, there was one of the most powerful Kryo 680 cores with a clock speed of 2.99 GHz, three Kryo 680 cores with a frequency of 2.42 GHz and four energy-saving Kryo 680 cores with a frequency of 1.8 GHz.
As for the benchmark results, in the most popular test AnTuTu, the Mix 4 device scored a record 812 thousand points. This is a very solid result, but I was not particularly surprised, given its rather large cost. I also ran other tests such as 3DMark, GeekBench 5 and others, so I’ll leave the results in the album below.
The Adreno 660 accelerator is responsible for the graphics and in real life, the device showed itself from a good side. That is, I was able to play very demanding games at high graphics values and I was pleased with the results. For example, in the game Genshin Impact, the FPS was stable at about 55-60 frames per second. At the same time, there were no special freezes and delays, everything worked smoothly and smoothly. If we talk about overheating, then the device was not particularly hot, but was within normal limits.
The minimum amount of RAM on the Xiaomi Mi Mix 4 smartphone model was 8 GB, and the maximum amount was 12 GB in DDR5 format. As for the built-in memory, the minimum value was 128 GB, and there were also 256 and 512 GB versions of the UFS 3.1 format. At the same time, I had no problems with the speed of reading or writing. On the other hand, I can note the absence of an additional memory card slot.
In addition, I did not find any particular problems with the wireless connection. Since the latest wireless technology was used on board the Mi Mix 4 smartphone. For example, the device had sixth generation Wi-Fi with Bluetooth 5.2 version. Also on board the smartphone there was a high-speed GPS module and, of course, an NFC module for contactless payments.
Speaking of the operating system, the device was controlled thanks to the Android 11 version. As you might have guessed, I have a Chinese version of my smartphone, so the UI only has English and Chinese. But I was not disappointed, as the global version will be released soon and thus the device will receive automatic updates over the air with global firmware.
The user interface itself worked smartly and quickly, I did not reveal any special complaints about its work. Note that the UI version was MIUI 12.5. The list of functions, features and controls remained the same as on most devices with the MIUI user interface.
Camera and sample photos
The performance of the main camera did not really surprise me, since I have already encountered similar sensors on other devices. But here’s why I was surprised by this hidden selfie camera on the front of the smartphone under the screen.
This is a really big leap forward in terms of technology, as until now, no smartphone has had a similar feature. By the numbers, the front camera has a 20-megapixel resolution and can shoot video at 1080p and 30 frames per second. As for the quality, it was not very good. Although this is not surprising, since the technology was still raw and needs to be refined over more than one generation.
Okay, as far as the main camera is concerned, the Xiaomi Mi Mix 4 smartphone was equipped with a 108-megapixel main sensor and an f/1.9 aperture. There was also a 13-megapixel camera for ultra-wide shots and an 8-megapixel camera for the periscope. Shoots the device with maximum video at 8K and 24fps, 4K and 30/60fps and others. At the same time, there is optical stabilization on board the smartphone, so the video shoots smoothly and without any particular complaints.
Naturally, from the album below you can see examples of photos taken with Mix 4. In general, I did not reveal any particular complaints about the quality of the photos. The main camera takes pretty good and bright photos, both in the daytime and at night. But the selfie camera takes not the most favorable photos and videos, including.
Battery and run time
The built-in battery capacity of the Xiaomi Mi Mix 4 was not particularly record-breaking, namely 4500 mAh. But given that this is a flagship device, I did not reveal any special problems with battery life.
As for the results, first of all, I tested the smartphone at 100% brightness level and 60 Hz, the device showed the result in the Work 3.0 Battery life test for about 9 hours and 40 minutes and it was discharged to 20%. The result was very good, do you agree with me? But if you use the smartphone constantly at 120 Hz and also at maximum brightness, then the result in a similar test will already be 6 hours and 10 minutes.
In the game Asphalt 9 at 60 Hz, the device was discharged in half an hour at just 1%. But in the game Genshin Impact, the discharge in half an hour was 14%. That is, the device can easily work one working day without any complaints.
In addition, the smartphone uses super fast charging with a 120W power adapter. It took me about 30 minutes to fully charge, but the results were different. That is, the device may charge faster or slightly slower. There is also wireless charging with a power of 50 watts.
Conclusion, reviews, pros and cons
After my next full testing of the flagship smartphone model Xiaomi Mi Mix 4, I was left with only good and pleasant impressions.
For example, one of the advantages I can attribute is the high-quality materials used. For example, the back of the case was made of ceramic, and the front had Gorilla Glass Victus. Also, I did not find any special complaints about the assembly of the device.
As for the screen, it also pleased me with its brightness and the presence of great functionality. It’s 120Hz refresh rate, HDR10 +, and more. The performance of the smartphone was also excellent, as demonstrated by the synthetic benchmarks and games.
At the same time, I cannot say that the camera showed itself from the bad side, since on board the 108 MP device the sensor shot bright and rich photos and videos. And, of course, battery life was also good, but only when using a 60 Hz refresh rate. Also, the presence of fast charging will allow you to charge the device up to almost 100% for 15-20 minutes.
But just like on any smartphone, the Xiaomi Mi Mix 4 received a number of shortcomings and let’s talk about them in more detail. This lack of a headphone jack, an additional slot for a memory card and no full protection against water and dust. Also, I would like to get a slightly better protective case out of the box, and not such a transparent plain silicone case. Well, the most significant disadvantage is the low-quality work of the selfie camera and the high cost.
Price and where to buy cheaper?
Now everyone can purchase a new model of the flagship smartphone from Xiaomi in the Mix line. But for this you will need a fairly significant amount of money, namely $907.52.
Considering its cost and what the Xiaomi Mi Mix 4 smartphone offers us in real life, I can recommend this device for purchase. But in fact, I would like to add a full-fledged protection against water and dust, since such a disadvantage was quite significant for me.
