Xiaomi notebooks are something special. Why? This offers an unbelievably good price/performance. Where else can you get Gaming Laptop with top modern hardware and excellent workmanship/equipment for well under $1199?
The latest and theoretically best notebook in Xiaomi’s lineup is the 15.6-inch Xiaomi Mi Gaming Laptop in our review.
This is currently available in three versions, with the new Intel Core i5-7300HQ and 8GB RAM as well as the Intel Core i7-7700HQ and 8GB or 16GB RAM.
In addition, all versions come with 128 or 256GB SSD and NVIDIA GeForce GTX1050 Ti or GeForce GTX1060 GPU. Especially the latter is very impressive!
Even more impressive is the price. The i5 version is already available for around $1200, the i7 version for around $1199.
Let’s see if the Xiaomi Mi Gaming Laptop is really as good as it looks on paper! Let’s do with specifications of Xiaomi Mi Gaming Laptop.

Xiaomi Mi Gaming Laptop: Design and Appearance
At 15.6 inches, the Xiaomi Mi Gaming Laptop in our analisis is not an ultra-compact notebook, but still quite portable to classify as for rivals like Dell or Asus.
This is mainly due to the very small thickness of around 2.09cm. Also, the display frame is not overly large, which is why the Mi Gaming Laptop may well be counted among the more compact 15 inches.
Also, the weight is with 2.7kg and it’s Okay, especially considering that it is a full aluminum notebook!
Xiaomi sets the Mi Gamin,g Laptop unibody design. This means the complete lower part of the housing is made of a solid block of aluminum.
This gives the notebook an uncanny stability and massiveness that is at or even above the level of an Apple MacBook Pros. Away from the unibody design, Xiaomi relies on simplicity.
For example, the back of the display lid is completely clean. Only inside, under the display, a Xiaomi Mi logo is attached.
You could say that Xiaomi has something Apple-oriented, which you probably would not be wrong. The Mi Notebook Pro could be an Apple MacBook Pro! The workmanship and the feel are at a comparable level, as is the design language.
Of course, this is something that speaks for the Xiaomi Mi Gaming Laptop in our test. I think this is simply chic as for Gaming Laptop in 2018!
The only thing I would have to complain about is the rather sharp lower edge of the notebook, which is a general problem with most aluminum models.
Where the Mi Notebook Pro stands out a bit from the Apple MacBook Pros is the port features.
Also, there is an HDMI port (full size!), four USB 3.0 ports, Type-C port, microphone and headphone jack, and an SD card reader.
The Gaming Laptop is also charged via the upper USB C port. Unfortunately, the USB C ports are normal USB C ports, not a Thunderbolt 3.
Xiaomi Mi Gaming Laptop: Display and Screen
The Xiaomi Mi Gaming Laptop has a 15.6 inch Full HD display. The display is often the biggest distinction between high-end notebooks and semi-high end devices. So, how good is the display of the Mi Gaming Laptop in the test?
The first subjective impression is good! The sharpness fits, colors are clear and strong and the contrast is also good.
No wonder, because Xiaomi relies on an IPS panel. The first impression is good to very good.
This is also confirmed by the measured values. These are generally very good! A 93% coverage of the sRGB color space and 72% coverage of the AdobeRGB color space is very neat!
Also, the contrast of 1: 840 and the maximum brightness of 297cd/m² is good. However, I just see the air at the top a bit more air, just as the display of Mi Gaming Laptop is reflective.
For outdoor use, the Xiaomi Mi Gaming Laptop in the review is therefore only partially suitable. For indoor use, however, the display and the brightness is more than adequate.
Offside, there are no high-quality complaints, even for a professional photo and video editing, the Mi Gaming Laptop is suitable.
Xiaomi Mi Gaming Laptop: Hardware and Performance
I receive the Xiaomi Mi Gaming Laptop with Intel Core i7-7700HQ, 16GB RAM, 1TB HDD and 256GB SSD. This is the biggest version for around $1999.
However, the price of the Core i5-7300HQ version is probably the most interesting. But keep in mind that the memory of the notebook cannot be upgraded! The 8GB of the smaller versions is usually sufficient but can be a bit short on strong multitasking. 16GB offers a slightly larger pad.
The 8th Gen Intel U CPUs generally offer a very high performance! Especially compared to CPUs of the 7th generation, the 8th generation Intel U CPUs offers a significant increase in performance.
Both the i5 and the i7 are a quad core, but the i7 has a slightly higher boost clock and 8 threads.
A special feature of the Xiaomi Mi Gaming Laptop is the Nvidia Geforce GTX1060 graphics card. However, anyone expecting a high-end gaming performance will surely be appointed.
Video and photo editing goes absolutely smoothly on the Mi Gaming Laptop 2018. Also, the notebook feels extremely fluid and responsive in everyday life.
Much better is it for a notebook barely. Of course, this is also due to the boost clock. Temporarily, for example, when starting a program, the Xiaomi Mi Gaming Laptop in the test can get even more performance (up to 3.8GHz in my test).
Luckily, the Nvidia Geforce GTX1060 is quite capable. Games like Overwatch, CS GO or even older AAA titles like Skyrim run perfectly.
Overwatch runs on a high level of detail and Full HD resolution with over 60FPS! Even at the highest level of detail, 36FPS are still possible. CS GO achieves 76FPS on average in the highest settings, Skyrim on very high 51FPS.
Playing a game is absolutely possible with the Mi Gaming Laptop, of course not always on the highest settings, but most of the games are easy to get up and running.
What about the built-SSD?
Surprisingly, Xiaomi uses an NVME SSD in Mi Gaming Laptop and not even a bad one. It is a Samsung PM961 installed, which managed reading whopping 3113MB/s and writing 1742MB/s.
Incidentally, the SSD in Mi Gaming Laptop in the analisis can easily be upgraded, you can even use a second M.2 SSD!
Xiaomi Mi Gaming Laptop: Software
The Xiaomi Mi Gaming Laptop comes with a Chinese Windows 10! This can be changed neither in any language and in English too!
So it is a Windows 10 new installation needed. This is not a problem in itself.
Here you will find a suitable tool from Microsoft, which installs Windows 10 on a USB stick.
Connects the USB stick with the Xiaomi Mi Gaming Laptop and hammers F12 and F8 at startup and then selects the USB stick.
Follow the instructions of Windows and after about 10-20 minutes you have an English Windows 10 installation.
What about the license? Unfortunately, I can not make a binding statement here. For me, Windows 10 was activated with a license, but I’m not sure where the license comes from. MS says it’s a digital license associated with my account (but I do not have a free Windows 10 Home license on this account?!).
In the worst case, you have to buy a Windows 10 license! However, you can do this only after the fact. You have 30 days to get a valid license after installation.
Xiaomi Mi Gaming Laptop: Speaker
Xiaomi advertises the Mi Notebook Pro with “Harman Infinity” speakers, which also support Dolby Atmos.
However, it is nothing new that notebook manufacturers advertise with big names, but then fail to deliver. Is this also the case with the Mi Gaming Laptop?
The two speakers of the notebook are mounted on its underside and are intended to reflect the sound from the table to you.
This works fine too! The speakers of the Xiaomi Mi Gaming Laptop are great! You can not say that otherwise.
The speakers have a large sound volume and almost something like bass. The clarity is good to very good. In short, these are the best speakers I have heard in a notebook of this class so far.
With one exception! If you do not operate the notebook on a flat surface, the quality of the speakers will be extremely low. The speakers live on the sound reflection, this is not present, because the notebook stands on a bed, your legs, etc., the speakers are very dull.
Thus, the Mi Gaming Laptop for the evening in bed Netflix looks only limited suitable unless you put a book underneath.
Xiaomi Mi Gaming Laptop: Keyboard and Trackpad
The Xiaomi Mi Gaming Laptop is only available with English keyboard layout!
What does this mean in practice? Especially since the keyboard of the Xiaomi Mi Gaming Laptop is very good with good RGB Light! Xiaomi uses the usual island keys in the MacBook style but does not use the butterfly which, as Apple does.
But I see this as a big advantage! The keys have a nice pressure point and a pleasant pressure depth. Although the keys are not overly crisp, they still look pretty accurate.
The keyboard reminds me of the feeling of pressure very much on the Dell XPS 13/15, which made me feel right at home. Of course, there is also a Colorful RGB backlight as for real gaming laptop in 2018.
In short, the keyboard is great! I like this much better than what Apple does with its newer notebooks.
What about the trackpad? Its nature also resembles that of the Apple MacBooks. Xiaomi relies on a large glass trackpad, which also feels very comfortable.
Also, the use was pleasingly positive! I would almost say that this is the best trackpad I’ve ever been able to use with a Windows notebook.
It is precise, there is no jumping of the mouse pointer or similar behavior and especially the gliding properties are top. Although gestures are not as good as a Mac, there are no complaints apart from them.
Xiaomi Mi Gaming Laptop: Temperature and Cooling
Let’s come to a point that surprised me a bit, the temperature of the Xiaomi Mi Gaming Laptop. In my test, this reached under 100% full load (in a stress test) temperatures between 51-62 degrees on the CPU!
This is extremely little! A Dell XPS 9370 reaches between 85 and 99 degrees. The reason is quite simple, the power limit of “only” 15W. This is absolutely easy to handle for the cooling system.
The strange thing, I have read reports that spoke of very high temperatures, which I can understand in any way.
There seems to have been a BIOS update here, which has reduced the power limit to lower the temperatures?!
Of course, these low temperatures also mean that the fans in the notebook are hardly audible even under full load.
When idling, the Xiaomi Mi Gaming Laptop is generally completely quiet.
Also, modern cooling is used here, so this Mi Gaming Laptop has great potential in this section. From all sides of the case, you can see the holes for ventilation.
In addition, there is a special key, which includes the maximum power settings and the full load of the cooling system on the Gaming Laptop.
Xiaomi Mi Gaming Laptop: Battery
What about the battery life of the Xiaomi Mi Gaming Laptop in the test? The notebook has a 60Wh battery, which is a solid capacity. Xiaomi promises a running time of 7-8 hours.
What is the situation in practice? Very good! In a normal usage scenario, ie web browsing/office use etc., I achieved about 8 hours run time in the test.
Even with a multitasking use, web browsing + office + music + diverse background applications should be easily 6-7 hours possible. A great value!
Under full load, of course, the running time is significantly lower but is still around two hours, which is not a bad value.
The notebook Mi Gaming Laptop is charged via its USB C port. However, you can not just load this with every power bank.
The power bank/charger must support the USB Power Delivery Standard as well as deliver at least 20V 2A. The smaller power banks with USB Power Delivery, which only deliver 30/29W, do not work.
Xiaomi Mi Gaming Laptop: Conclusions and Reviews
The Xiaomi Mi Gaming Laptop in our review is an $1800 – $2000 gaming notebook, so you could summarize this.
Purely of the optics and processing, the Xiaomi Mi Gaming Laptop is on the level of an Asus ROG Zephyrus, here there is no question. Although the 15.6-inch notebook weighing just under 3KG is not ultra-compact or lightweight, it’s still portable enough for those looking for a mobile workstation, given its small footprint and small screen margins.
And yes, the Mi Gaming Laptop can certainly convince in a professional environment. On the one hand, this has a rich amount of connections (4x USB 3.0, HDMI, 1x USB C, 1x SD card reader) on the other hand, the display is good to very good!
As good as the photo/video editing on the notebook is easily possible. It is not quite on the level of an Apple MacBook, but it is on the level of a Dell XPS 13/15 (maybe just under it).
Also, the performance is top thanks to Intel CPUs, no complaints here. Especially as a Nvidia Geforce GTX1060 graphics card is installed. Although this is a performance miracle, it is enough for a round of Overwatch or CS GO, where the standard Intel GPU would be on the limit.
In short, if you are looking for a budget high-end notebook and are ready to deviate from the usual manufacturers, the Xiaomi Mi Gaming Laptop is a great choice!
Your decision. I could fully convince the Xiaomi Mi Gaming Laptop 15.6 in the test and in gaming and everyday life!
Xiaomi Mi Gaming Laptop: Price and Where to buy cheaper?
At the moment you can not buy a Xiaomi Mi Gaming Laptop yet for the low price is $1199.99 for the maximum configuration.
Also for this money you will get Microlab M108 Multimedia Speaker Network for free.
Of course, you can order at a lower price but also get a lower set. In general, the Gaming Laptop has great potential for its rivals in 2018.
