The Xiaomi Huami Amazfit 2 in our review is a sports wearable developed in cooperation between Huami and Xiaomi, which will be distributed for the first time not only exclusively in China, but also in many Western countries. Whether the sleek wearable is good for something, you’ll find in this review.
Xiaomi Huami Amazfit 2: Packaging
Visible from the outside, the Xiaomi Huami Amazfit 2 is second generation watches come in an attractive cardboard box with a transparent plastic lid.
In addition to the smartwatch, there are also the 4-pin charging dock, a micro USB cable, and a user manual.
Xiaomi Huami Amazfit 2: Design and Appearance
The Xiaomi Huami Amazfit 2 has a modern and high-quality design. The watch case is partly made of scratch-resistant ceramic, giving the watch a proud weight of 60g.
Although the back of the case is made of plastic, optically adapts well to the ceramic. The striking red silicone strap is closed by a pin buckle and is adjustable in size by 15 levels.
The bracelet is attached with a sliding closure, which makes it easy to exchange. With IP67 protection, the Xiaomi Huami Amazfit 2 in our analisis is dust-tight and even protected against temporary submersion to a depth of one meter.
The smartwatch is processed without any problems. The watch case has no gaps and also the bracelet has no sharp or unsightly cut edges.
Xiaomi Huami Amazfit 2: Display
The display of Xiaomi Huami Amazfit 2 is a so-called transflective color display with a diagonal of 1.34 inches and a resolution of 320 x 300 pixels.
A transflective display is characterized by the fact that it can be read excellently in direct sunlight. It is also interesting that the display is always active (“Always-On”) and at the same time there are no losses in battery life.
The transflective display is surprisingly good in the test. In sunshine, the display is even much better read than in cloudy weather.
In the dark or at night, the backlight is supporting, so that the display can still be read well under these conditions.
A disadvantage of the display is the low viewing angle stability. If the viewing angle is too steep, the display will be less readable.
What you have to accept, are the sometimes pale colors, which sometimes appear more or less strong, depending on the incidence of light.
The operation via the small touchscreen works well. Entries and swipes were precisely recognized in the test.
Xiaomi Huami Amazfit 2: Hardware and Performance
About the internal hardware of the watch is known only a few. Information on the processor makes the manufacturer only a few.
It is known that the processor clocks with 1.2GHz (dual-core). The memory equipment amounts to a 512MB RAM and a 4GB internal memory. There is no memory expansion option.
The system itself already consumes approximately 1.44GB of internal memory, leaving 2.56GB available for other data.
Wired, the clock is addressed via the 4-pin dock. This can be used to charge the smartwatch, but it can also be used to transfer data.
The Xiaomi Huami Amazfit 2 is wirelessly equipped with a 2.4G WiFi module and Bluetooth 4.0. Other features include an integrated GPS module, a heart rate sensor, a light sensor and a barometer.
Xiaomi Huami Amazfit 2: Commissioning
Commissioning is uncomplicated. After turning on the clock for the first time, a QR code will be shown on the display, resulting in the download of the Amazfit Watch app.
Alternatively, the app can also be downloaded directly from the Google PlayStore or for iOS devices from the Apple Appstore.
In contrast to the user interface of the Smartwatch, the app is completely available in English.
To start up a Xiaomi Mi account is required, which one must invest before connecting.
Then the QR code has to be scanned again and the pairing via Bluetooth is fully automatic and only has to be confirmed on both devices.
Xiaomi Huami Amazfit 2: Amazfit Watch app
The Amazfit Watch app is the “connection center”, so to speak. The app can be used to read the battery status of the watch, watch faces can be exchanged and the collected data is synchronized via this app.
Another function of the app is the notification management. This can be used to specify which notifications should be transmitted to the clock.
Furthermore, there are options for setting icon management, ie the order in which the small quick start icons are listed on the smartwatch, there are weather settings, such as: to the temperature unit and the location, as well as can be determined which unit system is used.
The Amazfit Watch app is not responsible for the graphical display or evaluation of the collected data.
Here you have to resort to the Xiaomi Mi-Fit App 2.0, which also uses the Xiaomi Mi Band 2. The data collected by the Amazfit app will be automatically synced with the Mi-Fit app 2.0. A transfer to Google Fit is also possible.
Xiaomi Huami Amazfit 2: Practical test and Functions
The fact that the Xiaomi Huami Amazfit 2 Smartwatch is clearly designed for the sporty user is already recognizable by the numerous fitness and outdoor functions.
First and foremost, the pedometer with an individually definable daily goal is in the foreground.
In addition, there are several sports functions that can be activated depending on the activity. In total, you can choose from 7 sports activities, with each of these sports being loaded with their own profile.
Supported are the sports running (outdoor), walking, running (indoor), cycling (outdoor), cycling (indoor), forest running and running on the cross-trainer. Depending on which profile you choose, functions such as GPS enabled or disabled.
Xiaomi Huami Amazfit 2: User interface sports
For example, if you select Outdoor, the watch will wait for a GPS signal and then collect data on the distance traveled, calories burned, speed, heart rate, and time required.
The data collected for this activity can then be displayed independently of the counted steps. For this, the Huami Amazfit 2 in the review offers an activity overview or you can look at the data directly via the Mi-Fit app 2.0.
The accuracy of the pedometer leaves nothing to be desired. Steps are accurately recognized and even when driving or office activities there are no deviations due to incorrect measurements.
Even if you pause while a sports activity is in progress, the smartwatch detects it and pauses the stopwatch or collecting data for the moment you paused.
Xiaomi Huami Amazfit 2: Heart rate sensor and sleep monitor
Like most other fitness gadgets, the Xiaomi Huami Amazfit 2 is equipped with a photodiode and LED for heart rate measurement.
The blood flow under the skin, which is supposed to reflect the current heart rate, is measured. The accuracy of such sensors is always critical.
However, the measurements spread throughout the day during the test phase seemed realistic.
Also, the constant measurements during the sports activities showed no unrealistic deviations.
The data collected on the heart rate can also be displayed listed. In addition, there is a warning function as soon as a limit is exceeded.
The sleep monitor of the watch is automatically activated and cannot be set manually. Among other things, data on the time for falling asleep and recovery and the different phases of sleep are collected.
The detection of sleep times worked quite well in the test. Nevertheless, I have already waived after a few days on the sleep measurement, since it is quite uncomfortable to fall asleep with a wristwatch. Here are thinner fitness bracelets clearly in the advantage.
Xiaomi Huami Amazfit 2: Weather features and GPS
For those who like to stay up to date with the weather, the watch has a 5-day weather forecast. The location is either received via the GPS of the clock or you can set the location in the Amazfit Watch app.
Where the weather data come from, unfortunately, you do not know. The integrated GPS module also records the running distance.
A GPS Fix finds the Smartwatch within a few seconds. An e-compass is integrated and accurately reflects the respective compass direction.
The compass also gives access to the barometer’s data, which shows, among other things, air pressure and altitude above sea level.
Music, alarm clock, and training plan
If you want to listen to music during the sport, the Huami Amazfit has a suitable solution for this as well.
With a built-in music player, locally stored songs can be played through a connected Bluetooth headset. Unfortunately, the music feature of the Smartwatch turns out to be a little spartan.
Titles stored on the smartphone can be e.g. not transmitted to the clock via Bluetooth. An FM function is also missing. Thus, locally only 2.56GB left for music, but at least should suffice for more than 500 titles.
The alarm clock is identical to the wake-up function of a smartphone. You can create different alarm profiles and there is also a “snooze” function.
One is woken up by a gentle vibration of the smartwatch. The Training Schedule mode offers training plans lasting several weeks (57 days) for beginners as well as for marathon runners.
Activating a training plan gives you daily guidelines on how to exercise and what route to take.
Xiaomi Huami Amazfit 2: Watch Faces
Altogether 19 Watchfaces are preinstalled. These can be selected via the Amazfit Watch app or directly via the smartwatch. In addition to digital, there are also analog watch faces.
Each watch face is different and has different displays of the collected data. For example, in addition to the time and date, you can also see the steps are taken, the battery level, the calories burned, or the distance.
In addition, it is possible to create your own watch faces and load them via the Amazfit Watch app on the clock.
Xiaomi Huami Amazfit 2: Battery
The permanently installed battery has a capacity of 280mAh. The smartwatch Xiaomi Huami Amazfit 2 is charged via the dock’s 4-pin connector.
Despite the comparatively low capacity, the Xiaomi Smartwatch achieved an average of 3 days. With low usage even 5 days were no problem for the watch.
Especially through the transflective display, the Amazfit watch proves to be very economical in terms of battery consumption. A full charge of the battery lasted an hour and 45 minutes in the test.
Xiaomi Huami Amazfit 2: Conclusions and Reviews
Xiaomi and Huami show a fitness wearable with the Xiaomi Huami Amazfit 2 in our reviews, which has almost nothing to complain about.
The smartwatch offers numerous fitness functions and at the same time can be used very well as an everyday watch due to the modern watch design.
Thanks to the transflective display, the Smartwatch is not only excellent for reading in the sunshine, but also allows a long-lasting battery life of up to 5 days.
Due to the integrated WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS, there are hardly any wishes left for the hardware side.
The pedometer accurately tracks the distance traveled and the heart rate sensor provides realistic readings. To criticize is the Spartan music function and that two apps are needed to connect the clock and to read the data.
