Xiaomi Himo V1: Design and Appearance
Now let’s move on to the bike of design, with a quick summary of what to remember. The Xiaomi Himo V1 weighs 16.7 Kg. It has small wheels (12 inches in diameter).
The front wheel has at its center a given electric motor for a max power of 250W.
It is also equipped with a caliper brake. The rear wheel features a Shimano drum brake and a three-speed derailleur from the same brand.
The main tube of the bike houses a battery consisting of 6Ah Li-ion. The theoretical autonomy is 50 km with the maximum level.
The bike is fully functional without assistance if the engine is off or the battery is empty. Front and rear lights are integrated into the extension of the main axis.
Xiaomi says its bike is designed to withstand loads of up to 100 Kg but does not specify the maximum size.
This is an important point to take into account, as the height of the handlebar is not adjustable. The elevation of the saddle is also limited.
In fact, people who measure more than 180 cm may find the bike too small for them: they can quite use it, but the comfort will not be optimal. No problem for those who measure less 180 cm.
On the handlebars, there are two standard brake handles, a small LCD meter that displays speed, distance and assistance mode chosen, as well as the three-speed switch derailleur.
The bike of Xiaomi Himo V1 in the analisis folds in about twenty seconds once we have taken the hand.
Once folded, it is carried by one hand, standing alone and returned to a car trunk or lift.
The battery is extractable simply when the bike is folded, which allows to take it to an apartment to load it while leaving the machine in his garage.
All the subtlety of folding the Xiaomi Himo V1 in the test is the use of the seat post. It is this long aluminum rod that connects the two parts of the bike and secures them in an unfolded position.
To fold the bike, you must first loosen the two quick couplers that hold the seat post, then pull the seat post up until the bottom protrudes beyond the compartment dedicated to the battery.
The rear wheel will then naturally fit along the front wheel. On each of the hubs, a small magnetized metal plate waits for her companion to join her.
These two magnets adhere only slightly, but they are enough to keep the wheels in place. Then, just rest the seatpost until it touches the floor, then unlock the hinge that holds the handlebars.
We then have a folded bike, the masses of which are sufficiently well balanced so that we can carry it to one hand by grasping it by the central frame.
It is also possible to fold the pedals, but the manipulation does not bring much.
The reassembly is done through the same steps, reversing the order of operations. Once the hand is taken, one folds or unfolds his Himo V1 in about twenty seconds without much effort.
Xiaomi Himo V1: First Impression and Test
Once the adjustments are made, it is time to get on the mount and appreciate the contributions of the electric motor.
Note that we are here in the presence of an electric bicycle (EVA), which means that you have to pedal for the engine to go into action.
The assistance is divided into three levels: maximum, moderate and reduced. A fourth mode allows you to switch off the engine and use the bike only with your strength.
The feet on the ground, we feel the presence of the engine by oscillating the bike back and forth between his legs: slight jerks confirm that he is ready to go into action.
In the highest setting, assistance is almost immediate, from the first pedal turn. There is only to give the first impetus for the bike to leave.
The legs accompany the rhythm effortlessly and you reach in a dozen meters at the top speed of the bike, around 22 km/h on the flat.
Then you just have to let yourself go: we continue to pedal but the speed is maintained without significant effort. The compromise does not lack charm: on the one hand, we move without really getting tired and without sweating, especially in this season.
On the other, we still have the satisfaction of getting some fresh air and some exercise. A torque sensor is responsible for modulating the level of assistance according to the effort provided.
On a slight hill, maintaining the speed requires a slightly more sustained effort, but the benefits of the assistance remain clearly significant.
In case of the steeper slope, the support remains the same but the speed decreases around 15 km/h.
It is quite funny that the Xiaomi Himo V1 compares favor with “traditional” pedelecs that adopt wheels of 20 inches and more. In such circumstances, the small size of the machine stirs curiosities.
Its maximum speed can, however, be frustrating. We explain: downhill, you will manage to exceed without problem the 30 km/h, and you will also be interested in paying attention to braking, which is not extremely precise or effective.
On the flat, you will quickly reach 22 or 23 Km/h thanks to the engine, push up to 25 Km/h using your legs and that’s about all.
It is not really possible to go faster unless you deploy excessive efforts.
Xiaomi Himo V1: LCD display and Mobile Application
Now let’s go to the small counter set on the handlebar. Xiaomi Himo V1 in the analisis comes with an LCD display that needs to be well oriented to maintain readability.
On the right of the screen, three large keys act as up and down arrows to move through the menus.
In practice, it is fortunately not so embarrassing. Once turned on, the bike is indeed ready for use and it is enough to start pedaling so that the display switches to a screen displaying the instantaneous speed, the distance traveled and the percentage of remaining battery.
On this screen, the information is accompanied by units expressed in English: they are therefore perfectly understandable.
Xiaomi’s bike has a Bluetooth 4.0 connection that allows you to pair it with an Android or iOS phone. The Himo V1 app, free, displays a meter by rolling, illustrating the speed and level of assistance provided and the distance traveled.
The Himo V1 app also has the same flaw as other Ninebot applications: the device must be turned on and connected to check the information that concerns it.
As soon as it is done, we find the total distance traveled, the serial number, the firmware version, etc. It is in passing through this mobile application available in English that will make any software updates to the bike, even if for the moment Himo V1 does not offer iOS device owners.
With an Android smartphone or tablet, you can, however, access an update that allows you to unleash the Himo V1 up to 25 km/h (see our dedicated guide).
For the association between bike and phone, it will play a little with the menus of the LCD to find the screen that has a QR code, then flash it using the mobile application.
Xiaomi Himo V1: Battery
Under the saddle, a physical button and a set of four LEDs to check the level of charge without turning on the computer of next generation Xiaomi Himo V1.
As soon as the bike is folded (or the seat post out), you can extract the battery simply and take it with you to charge it in the office or in an apartment.
Grooves guide the block at the time of insertion, so as not to have any problem of orientation.
For charging, the supplied AC adapter has a five-pin plug that can be connected directly to the battery when it is inserted into the bike.
It comes with a Chinese plug but the mains cable is removable which allows to easily switch to a French plug.
The adapter delivers 2A on 42V. The LED is illuminated in red during charging, it turns green once the cycle is complete.
Used at 90% by a 70 Kg driver and an outside temperature of 20°C, the Xiaomi Himo V1 held about 39 km before the low battery alert from which we turned off assistance to finish with the strength of the legs.
Xiaomi Himo V1: Conclusions and Reviews
This second Xiaomi electric bike is an excellent surprise: it is practical, well designed and very pleasant in a daily use made of short or medium journeys.
Its modern look fits well with urban uses and the quality of manufacture is excellent, without apparent major weakness.
The Xiaomi Himo V1 in the review may lack braking with energy recovery to recharge the battery while driving but until it enters a potential V2.
We fell in love with this small folding electric bike to report quality price almost unbeatable in case of import from China.
Xiaomi Himo V1: Price and Where to buy cheaper?
The availability of this bike is often problematic, because of a product intended primarily for the domestic market and difficulties related to the routing since the cardboard which contains it displays dimensions.
Now you can buy a new generation of Xiaomi Himo V1 Bike at a good price for only $549.99 with free delivery.
