Xiaomi, together with the Fimi collaboration, has produced another novelty device that can give you a smile on your face. As you might have guessed from the title of the article, today we will talk about a new model of a quadcopter called Xiaomi Fimi X8 Mini.
First of all, I want to note that I bought this drone for personal purposes, and not just for review. Therefore, I will judge very objectively and by all criteria. I will also mention that I have already been using this device for the fifth day and I have something to tell you about.
At the time of order, the price tag for the Xiaomi Fimi X8 Mini 4K was $400. This is a pretty good value considering its technical features and functions. Even when compared to its main competitor, the DJI Mini 2, which will cost you a little more for about $600. But in terms of functionality, the new product from Fimi will be slightly better.
For example, the quadcopter got a foldable design and pocket size. Also, the manufacturer guarantees up to half an hour of battery life in the air. The maximum video resolution was 4K and 30 frames per second. There is also a three-axis stabilizer onboard the device, an insignificant weight of about 250 grams, and many other features.
But the most important question for me is the quality of video shooting in windy weather. How well the drone from Fimi will cope with its tasks, you can find out in the detailed and in-depth review below.

Unboxing and packaging
The new model of the quadcopter is delivered in a relatively small white cardboard box.
On the front of the package, there is a drawing of the device itself with the name of the model and the main technical features. But on the opposite side, there is a slightly different pattern already in orange and folded.
Inside the box, I was able to find, directly, the drone itself, the control panel, one replaceable battery, and four spare blades with four propellers. The package also includes transport protection for the camera, a USB Type-C cable, a screwdriver, and instructions.
Also, the seller separately equipped the device with an additional 32 GB memory card. Although it is not the fastest in terms of speed, I was still glad to see such a gift. In general, the equipment is very good, there is everything you need for the first flight and not only. Therefore, I propose to start your testing with the appearance and quality of execution.
Design, build quality and materials
As you can see from the unboxing, my Xiaomi Fimi X8 Mini 4K drone was made of white matte plastic. An orange version is also available, which looks more defiant, but I did not dare to order this color for myself.
The minimalistic design is present on the updated model of the quadcopter from Fimi. As I said, the device has received a folding design. And when folded, the drone’s dimensions easily fit in the palm of your hand.
To be more precise, the dimensions were 145 x 85 x 56 mm when folded, and when unfolded – 200 x 145 x 56 mm. At the same time, the weight of the model does not exceed 258 grams with the regular version of the battery and 245 grams with the Pro version of the battery.
You may be asking the question of why the Pro version of the battery weighs less, does it really have less battery capacity? In fact, every extra gram of weight is important in flight, and the less the weight of the device, the longer the flight range and duration will be.
The camera was installed on the front of the Fimi X8 Mini quadcopter on a three-axis mechanical stabilizer. Thanks to its help, it will provide you with stable video recording even in strong winds and without any jumps or other troubles.
An LED indicator was also installed on the body of the device, which was clearly visible even in the daytime. Therefore, it was easy for me to observe the drone when I lifted it to a height of 800 meters from the ground.
I also had no complaints about the build quality, since all the components were assembled well and without any questions. Naturally, the device is best used in sunny weather, and not during rain and strong winds, because there is no protection against water and falls onboard the Fimi X8 Mini model. Although it is worth noting that there is protection for the camera during transport out of the box, and this is a pretty useful thing.
The package also includes a remote joystick for a smartphone. That is, through a mobile application connected via a Wi-Fi connection, you will directly control the drone itself. But here I would like to note that the dimensions of the remote control itself are rather bulky and correspond to the approximate dimensions of the drone itself when folded.
Also on the remote control itself, you can find two joysticks to control the trajectory and speed. There are also two buttons that are responsible for returning to the starting point and enabling or disabling pairing.
Connection, settings, calibration, and functions
After turning on the quadcopter, I installed the mobile application for the Xiaomi Fimi X8 Mini drone and connected it to my smartphone. This stage took me literally 5 minutes and I did not find any special difficulties with the connection.
To connect, you need to make one short and long press on the remote control and on the drone. After that, the LED on the drone will glow green.
The next step is calibration, which must be done with each flight. This process took me about 1 minute and I did not find strong discomfort in this. You can also calibrate the remote control, but this can be done once, and not every time, as for example with a drone.
During my testing, I always had windy weather. But this did not become a problem for my measurements and filming. Despite its low weight, the picture during video recording was stable and without twitching.
At the same time, the maximum video resolution was 4K and 30 frames per second. You can watch examples of video quality in the video below. From myself, I can note that the daytime video quality was very good. But during twilight or at night, the video quality dropped quite significantly.
It is also worth noting that the satellites picked up the signal quickly and its accuracy was always stable. At the same time, the maximum flight speed of the drone was 16 meters per second.
As for battery life, the manufacturer promises about 30 minutes of battery life on one charge level. But in fact, during the sport mode and strong winds, the device worked for about 15 minutes. Although during training mode, the quadcopter flew 26 minutes. Here I will note that I have the most standard version of the battery. If you have the Pro version, the flight duration will be slightly longer.
The good news is the availability of fast charging via the Type-C connection. That is, the battery supports the Quick Charge function, so charging will not take much of your time.
Now let’s talk about the mobile app itself. The main screen displays video from the drone’s camera. Also at the top, there is information about the GPS signal, range of altitude and distance, speed, the quality of the GPS and Wi-Fi signal, the level of the remaining battery charge.
On the left side of the main screen, there are two buttons: return to the starting point and emergency landing. But on the right side, there are buttons for recording video, photo, and gallery.
Okay, now I want to talk about the different shooting modes. The first of them is smart object tracking, one-touch shooting, flight along a selected trajectory on the map, time-lapse, panorama, orbit, and spiral. All features and functions worked out pretty well and without any questions.
Conclusion, reviews, pros, and cons
The new generation of the Xiaomi Fimi X8 Mini drone has shown itself from a rather positive side. Even with difficult tasks, the quadrocopter coped well, but it was not without drawbacks.
First, let’s talk about the positive aspects, and then about the main disadvantages of the device. The first thing I liked about the new generation of the drone is its compact size and lightweight. Other than that, the build quality was very good. Even after my tests, which sometimes did not go according to plan, including failed landings, the drone remained intact and undamaged.
I also liked the number of different functions and flight modes that will be useful for novice users. Another advantage can be attributed to the rather good quality of video filming in the daytime.
Okay, now about the main disadvantages that you may encounter on your way. The battery life, as the manufacturer assures, does not quite correspond to real life. I also did not like the quality of video recording at night. Also, the dimensions of the remote control are quite large and bulky.
Price and where to buy cheaper?
Currently, the price tag for the new model of the Xiaomi Fimi X8 Mini drone is $498.75. But for such a price, I will not advise you to buy it, since at the beginning of sales the price tag was around $400.
Therefore, if you want to find a new hobby for yourself, then the updated version of the compact quadcopter will be a good choice. But it is worth waiting for a good offer from the manufacturer at an attractive price.
