Xiaomi Civi Review: Beautiful Smartphone with OLED Screen and 120Hz

If you are looking for a powerful, but compact smartphone, then perhaps the variant with the Xiaomi Civi model will be a good choice.

In this article, you can learn about the main features of a smartphone and its functionality. I will also conduct an inspection on constructive points, tell you how well the smartphone was assembled and from what materials.

In addition, I plan to conduct a number of synthetic tests, such as AnTuTu and others, show sample photos and play games. But, I will also tell you my experience of using the device and battery life.

As for the cost, now you can buy a Xiaomi Civi smartphone at not the lowest price, namely for $625. Usually this is the cost of a flagship smartphone, for example from the manufacturer OnePlus.

Therefore, will the new smartphone model from Xiaomi surprise me? Let’s now talk about its main technical features. The device comes with a 6.55-inch OLED screen and 120Hz refresh rate. Responsible for performance is the Snapdragon 778G processor with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage.

The device also received a 64-megapixel main module and a 32-megapixel front camera module. In addition, the manufacturer speaks of light weight and size, so there should be no problems with ergonomics at all. In terms of battery life, the Civi uses a 4,500mAh battery and 55W fast charging.

Okay, from a technical point of view, the smartphone turned out to be good, but it is still far from the flagship device. Thus, let me share my experience of use, and at the end of the article you will find out whether the device is worth your attention or not.

Unboxing and packaging

It was a bit surprising for me to see a new trend from Xiaomi. Namely, the device came in a small and compact package. That is, the box itself was very thin, as, for example, in the devices of the iPhone series.

Xiaomi Civi Review: Beautiful Smartphone with OLED Screen and 120Hz

On the front of the package, I found only the name of the company and the model, but there was no drawing of the smartphone here. At the same time, the box itself had a simple white color, but the quality of the cardboard was corresponding to its price.

Meanwhile, inside the package, I found the following components: a small envelope with a needle for the SIM tray, documentation, an adapter from Type-C to 3.5 mm jack and a transparent silicone case. Of course, there was the smartphone itself in a protective shipping package.

But the charger and power cable were not included in the package. I bought these components separately and it is worth saying that the power of the charging unit was 55W. In general, the equipment was very good. But I was disappointed by the moment that Xiaomi did not follow in the footsteps of the consumer, but on the side of the manufacturer.

Design, build quality and materials

There are several color options available for the new model of the Xiaomi Civi smartphone in black, blue and pink. That is, the choice is not bad and I think everyone will be able to decide on the color that they like best.

The back of the smartphone was made of matte protective glass, just like the front of the device. In addition, the frame of the Civi smartphone was made of an aluminum alloy. In general, I had no particular complaints about the build quality. Each component was well assembled together.

But if we talk about protection from water, then there is none. But I was not surprised, since even more expensive versions of smartphones, for example, Xiaomi Mix 4, do not have full protection against water. Despite this fact, and considering the cost of $625, I would like to see water protection here.

If we talk about dimensions, then they turned out as follows: 158.3 x 71.5 x 7 mm, while the weight was about 166 grams. This is a very comfortable device, both in size and in its weight. The ergonomics of the new model of the Xiaomi Civi smartphone made me very happy. I could happily hold the device with one hand, although I had to operate the smartphone with two hands.

On the front of the smartphone, you can see a rounded screen. This feature always makes me happy, as the screen seems to have no boundaries. Therefore, it looks completely frameless, at least the right and left sides of the device. There was also a round cutout for the front camera at the top of the screen. But at the bottom of the screen was an optical fingerprint scanner.

At the same time, the fingerprint scanner worked very well. The response time was generally imperceptible, and I also can’t say bad things about the response accuracy. There is also face recognition protection. During my testing, this feature worked very well.

Of course, the back of the Xiaomi Civi smartphone received a module of three sensors with LED flash. A little later, I will talk about the quality of the camera in various conditions of use.

On the bottom of the device, there was a slot for dual nano SIM cards, microphone holes, Type-C connection and a main speaker. On the top of the device’s edge, an infrared sensor, a microphone and an additional speaker for stereo sound were used.

As for the sound, I liked the sound emitted from the Civi smartphone model. In practice, the sound quality was quite rich and had good dynamics. In addition, the sound stood out with a good bass value and even at the maximum volume value, I did not hear annoying creaks or other sounds.

Meanwhile, on the right side of the body of the Xiaomi Civi smartphone there is a familiar power button and volume rocker. But on the opposite side of the device was empty. Of the minuses, I can single out this lack of a headphone jack and there is no additional slot for a memory card. These options will be pretty good cons for some people when choosing a new smartphone.

Screen and image quality

An incredible feature in the new model of the Xiaomi Civi smartphone is a 6.55-inch screen using an OLED matrix. I note right away that the matrix is not a budget one and this technology is used in most flagship smartphones, and not on mid-budget devices.

Xiaomi Civi Review: Beautiful Smartphone with OLED Screen and 120Hz

As for the resolution, it was Full HD + or 1080 x 2400 pixels. The aspect ratio was 20: 9 and the pixel density per inch was within 402 PPI. I also emphasize that the frames around the screen were very minimal, especially on the right and left. Therefore, the usable area occupied by the screen on the front of the case was 91.5%.

Another screen feature on the Civi smartphone is the 120Hz refresh rate feature with a 240Hz sampling rate. In the settings, you can choose the refresh rate of the screen from 60 to 120 Hz. Depending on the refresh rate of the screen, both the smoothness of the operation and the battery life will depend.

The Civi smartphone screen also received support for features such as P3 color gamut, Dolby Vision, and HDR10 +. If we talk about color reproduction, then here I did not identify any particular problems. In practice, the colors were very realistic and vibrant, and the contrast ratio was in the range of 5,000,000: 1. That is, the black had a good depth.

In this case, the maximum brightness value was 950 nits. This is a very solid indicator and in my practice I have not had any particular problems with readability outdoors during bright sunny weather. There is a familiar list of features in the settings. These are Reading Mode, Eye Protection, Color Gamut Adjustment, Always-On Display Activation, and others.

Performance, benchmarks, games and OS

A good Snapdragon 778G processor with 5G network support was installed on the new model of the Xiaomi Civi smartphone. This is a 6nm chipset, which has shown itself to be very good in terms of performance. It is based on eight cores, four of which are Kryo 670 at 2.4 GHz and the other four Kryo 670 are energy-efficient at 1.8 GHz.

Xiaomi Civi Review: Beautiful Smartphone with OLED Screen and 120Hz

From the benchmark tests, I can single out such results, for example, in the AnTuTu test, the device scored 519 thousand points. This is a very good indicator for a modern device. Yes, this result does not surprise me this year, since flagship devices are gaining over 600 or even 700 thousand points. But here I can compare this result with the flagship smartphones of last year.

In terms of gaming capabilities, the Civi smartphone uses the Adreno 642L graphics accelerator. It also showed itself on the positive side in games. For example, I ran most of the heavy and demanding games and the device did the job well. In the game Genshin Impact, I was able to play on average values of the graphics and the FPS value was in the range of 50-60 frames per second.

In addition, I did not notice a strong overheating of the smartphone, both during games and during synthetic tests. The body of the smartphone was about 38-39 degrees and this is a very good indicator.

I have no particular complaints about the amount of memory, since the basic version received 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal memory. At the same time, there are also modifications with 8 and 256 GB or 12 and 256 GB. But as I said earlier, there is one drawback – the lack of a slot for an additional memory card.

Xiaomi Civi Review: Beautiful Smartphone with OLED Screen and 120Hz

Since the new model of the Xiaomi Civi smartphone is an underestimated flagship device, there can be no problems with wireless communication. For example, the latest generation Wi-Fi 6th generation, Bluetooth 5.2 version, high-speed GPS and NFC module for contactless payments are used on board the device. Absolutely every module and sensor worked properly and I did not reveal any special complaints about its work.

Xiaomi Civi Review: Beautiful Smartphone with OLED Screen and 120Hz

Currently, the Xiaomi Civi smartphone is only available with the Chinese firmware version. Therefore, a large number of Chinese applications can be found on board the user interface device. It should be said that the smartphone is controlled by the Android 11 operating system with the MIUI 12.5 user interface.

The settings only have English and Chinese. This may be a serious problem for some people. But in the future, the device will definitely receive an update when the global firmware version is released. During my testing, the smartphone worked pretty quickly and did not have any lags or other problems.

Camera and sample photos

If we talk about the camera performance on the Xiaomi Civi smartphone, then I was surprised by the presence of a front camera. It received a resolution of 32 megapixels and 1080p with 30 frames per second. During my testing, I really liked the pictures taken with the selfie camera. The photos were very detailed and bright, even at night the photos were of good quality.

Xiaomi Civi Review: Beautiful Smartphone with OLED Screen and 120Hz

At the same time, the main camera module received a resolution of 64 megapixels with an aperture of f/1.8 and also showed itself on the positive side. That is, the photos in any light came out good and clear. Color reproduction was in place, and night photos were obtained with good detail and without a lot of noise.

There are also two additional modules for 8-megapixel and 2-megapixel. In this case, the second sensor takes ultra-wide images, and the third module in macro mode. When using ultra-wide and macro mode, I had no particular complaints. But in poor lighting conditions, it is better not to use the above two modes.

Xiaomi Civi Review: Beautiful Smartphone with OLED Screen and 120Hz

In the mobile application, I found many interesting modes: photo, video, beauty, portrait, macro and ultra wide, 64MP and much more. In addition, the main camera module is capable of shooting video with a maximum resolution of 4K and 30 frames per second. Examples of photos taken with Xiaomi Civi can be seen in the album below.

Battery and run time

The body of the new Xiaomi Civi smartphone has a built-in battery with a capacity of 4500 mAh. This is not the highest battery capacity that I have been able to test, but I was completely satisfied with the result of battery life.

Xiaomi Civi Review: Beautiful Smartphone with OLED Screen and 120Hz

In fact, everything will depend on the use of the device, how often you plan to play games, shoot videos and much more. Also, the device will not last long when using a 120 Hz refresh rate. Therefore, if you do not need this feature during everyday use, then it is better to activate the 60 Hz refresh rate of the screen.

The Work 3.0 Battery life test result showed about 15 hours of screen on. But this is at 60% brightness level and using a 60 Hz refresh rate. If you constantly use the brightness at the maximum value and at 120 Hz refresh rate, then the screen on time will lie with a result of about 7-8 hours.

Xiaomi Civi Review: Beautiful Smartphone with OLED Screen and 120Hz

As I said earlier, the smartphone received 55W fast charging. But you will have to buy the power supply separately, just like the charging cable. On my test, the smartphone was charged from 0 to 100% in 47 minutes and it’s pretty fast.

Conclusion, reviews, pros and cons

Xiaomi Civi is a new smartphone model that is most suitable for women. Since it has a very good selfie camera and is lightweight with an interesting design.

Xiaomi Civi Review: Beautiful Smartphone with OLED Screen and 120Hz

Other advantages include good materials used and good build quality. The device also has a rich OLED screen with 120Hz refresh rate and a built-in fingerprint scanner.

In addition, the smartphone received good performance thanks to the Snapdragon 778G processor and a large amount of internal memory of 8 and 128 GB. The smartphone also stands out with a high-quality 64 MP sensor on the back of the device.

Xiaomi Civi Review: Beautiful Smartphone with OLED Screen and 120Hz

At the same time, there are also disadvantages, and to them I can attribute this lack of a charger and a power cable. The device does not have an additional memory card slot and no headphone jack. Currently, only the Chinese version of the device is available, which will be useful in China. Also, the cost for a smartphone is not very attractive.

Price and where to buy cheaper?

The most basic version of the Xiaomi Civi smartphone with 8 and 128 GB of memory will cost you $625.99 with an 11% discount.

As for me, the smartphone turned out to be very good, but I would wait for the release of the global version and when the cost of the device becomes slightly lower.
