This year, I have already tested more than one TV box and more than one mini PC, and I noticed an interesting fact. For the same price, a TV box gets a much better performance than the same mini PC. Today I will prove this in the example with the new TV box – X99 Max Plus.
In this review, I will share my impressions of the new and updated TV box, as well as the main advantages and disadvantages.
As for the price, the new X99 Max Plus will cost you about $55, but for this price, you get a pretty good specification.
Let’s briefly talk about the main features of the new TV box. This is a powerful Amlogic S905X3 processor, Mali G31 video graphics, Android 9.0 control, 4/128 GB memory version, dual Wifi module network, Gigabit wired connection, Bluetooth with version 4.1, support for 4K HDR video format 60 frames per second, and also HDMI output version 2.1.
Quite interesting features, but how will the device behave in practice? Let’s get started with a full review and I will start by unpacking.
X99 Max Plus: Specifications
|X99 Max Plus:||Specs|
|Maximum External Hard Drives:||2TB|
|Interface:||HDMI, RJ45, SPDIF, AV, TF card, USB2.0, USB3.0|
|Size:||114 x 114 x 21 mm|
The X99 Max Plus TV box comes in a black box, where on the front side it is indicated that it is a Smart TV box. I did not find any other information about the brand name and its model, except for the sticker that was glued to the side.
Inside the box, I found out – this is the TV box itself, the power adapter, HDMI cable, remote control, and instructions.
As for a budget and inexpensive TV box, there is everything you need for full use. In addition, I am glad that there is an HDMI cable that can be connected to any modern device, including a monitor or TV.
The first thing that catches your eye is the picture on the top panel of the X99 Max Plus TV box. It looks very realistic and looks like fire or flowing paint from a street artist. Also at the bottom of the left corner is the name of the model.
The front panel received an LED screen with a blue backlight. It shows basic information – it’s connected Wi-Fi, time, USB connection, and also has an alarm clock.
There is nothing on the right side, but on the rear end there are such connections as a power port, a SPDIF port, an audio jack, a standard HDMI port, a 1 Gig LAN connection, and the last one is an AV port.
The left end received such ports as one USB 2.0 and 3.0, as well as a slot for microSD memory cards.
As for a budget device, there are all the necessary external connections for a full movie viewing, watching your favorite TV shows, or for other purposes. Although, the presence of one or two additional USB ports did not hurt.
The underside of the X99 Max Plus received a sticker with the model name and memory version. There are also four anti-skid legs and air vents for cooling.
In addition, you can find additional cooling holes on the right or left side.
If we talk about the quality of the assembly, then I have no questions, but the glossy plastic used not only leaves fingerprints but also scratches on the case. Therefore, after a year of active use, plastic will not look at its best.
User Interface and Performance
I want to start my testing with the launch and check how long it takes until the X99 Max Plus is fully turned on. As the test showed, the TV box turned on in 27 seconds.
Like the appearance of the device, the user interface is made in a similar style. Here you can see bright colored wallpapers, which are very similar to the picture on the top side of the TV box.
In the upper right corner, there is the current time, date, and day of the week, as well as connected connections, such as Wi-Fi.
Below are the main icons of Chrome, Youtube, applications, a full Google Play Store, and settings. Also a little higher there is an icon through which you can add the most demanding applications. In total, you can add eight icons.
The settings are the same as on other models of TV boxes and there is nothing remarkable here. Let’s see how much memory is available in a system of 128 GB of memory. As you can see from the screenshot below – about 118 GB of memory is available and this is a good indicator.
The main advantage of the Android operating system over Windows is its simplicity and speed. Since it takes up much less internal space and all processes work many times faster.
Now I would like to go through all the applications that were installed already from the box. X99 Max Plus received AirPin (PRO) and MiraCast for broadcasting a mobile application screen for iOS and Android devices, respectively.
In addition, there are standard applications already installed such as YouTube, Netflix, video players, Google Play Store, and others. Naturally, if you do not need any applications, then you can easily remove any.
Now I would like to start my test by producing video files from a flash drive. I launched the heaviest file that I have – this is a 4K resolution with a high bit rate of 160 MB/second (HEVC). As the test showed, the video can be played without any problems and without freezes. A similar result was shown in a 4K video file with 60 frames per second (H265). Video plays smoothly and without jerking.
After that, I checked the TV box in the YouTube application, where the maximum available resolution was 4K with 60 frames per second. In practice, even such a high resolution was not a problem for the new X99 Max Plus TV box. With a lower resolution, such as 1080p, the device does well.
Let’s play a little, if you run the Asphalt 8 game, you can see that the X99 Max Plus TV box does not work as smoothly as you would like, but you can play.
If you play a little easier than the game, then there are no performance problems.
I wanted to draw your attention to some synthetic tests, for example, Geekbench 5, which showed a result of about 772 points in a single-core test and 1371 points in a multi-core test.
AnTuTu benchmark scored about 36 thousand points, and the result is not bad for an inexpensive TV box.
The wireless connection is quite stable and has dual-band WiFi with support for 2.4 and 5 GHz. The download speed was about 60 Mb/s, and upload – 18 Mb/s.
Conclusions and Reviews
After the tests, I can tell you about my impression of the new X99 Max Plus TV box.
This is a pretty productive device that does its job perfectly. For example, you can run 4K video resolution without any problems either via a USB flash drive or on Youtube.
In addition, if you plan to sometimes play on your TV, then the TV box will not disappoint you, especially your children. Simple and uncomplicated games run easily and it’s really interesting to play on the big TV.
Of the minuses, I can note that these are only two USB ports and glossy plastic, which is not very durable.
Price and where to buy cheaper?
Now you can purchase the new X99 Max Plus at a low price of about $53.39 with a 31% discount. Also, if you are a new user, you can get a coupon for any product with a discount of $20.
