UMIDIGI has presented a new smartphone that completely contradicts all models from this brand. Today we will talk about a rugged smartphone called UMIDIGI Bison.
This smartphone model was officially presented a few months ago, but I managed to get it only recently. I’ve been testing the rugged smartphone Bison for about one week now and I have something to tell you about.
In this article, I will share with you my first emotions, as well as the positive and negative aspects. In addition, you can find out for whom the rugged smartphone model was created and how it behaves in practice.
From a technical point of view, the smartphone received a standard 6.3-inch IPS screen with Full HD resolution. I also can’t ignore the good performance thanks to the Helio P60 processor, 6 GB of RAM, and 128 GB of internal memory. In addition, the smartphone received a good main camera with 48 megapixels, 5000 mAh battery capacity, and even an NFC sensor.
In general, the device looks not only interesting but also very hooked to me, given its specification and cost. Thus, I propose to start my in-depth and complete review.

Unboxing and packaging
Many users already know that all smartphone models from the UMIDIGI brand come in black packaging. But with the Bison model, the manufacturer decided to make a big change. Now, the protected device comes in a white box and for me, it was also a small shock.
As for the box itself, it is made of durable cardboard, and the company logo is located on the front. But on the back of the box, you can see a list of technical specifications.
Inside the box, I found the rugged smartphone itself, instructions, a Type-C charging cable, and an 18W power adapter. There is no protective silicone case included as it is not needed for a rugged smartphone.
Design, build quality and materials
UMIDIGI Bison is not an ordinary rugged smartphone that has got a rather small size and weight. For example, in the case of our hero, the dimensions of the device were 162.5 x 79.9 x 12.8 mm, and the weight was about 250 grams.
Of course, it is difficult to compare it with small and thin modern smartphones. But if you have a hard and harmful job, then you will need a well-rugged smartphone.
The Bison model received full protection from water, falls, dust, and other troubles. The standards are IP68, IP69K, so you can easily dive under a river or sea and take pictures underwater.
Many users do not conduct water, drop, or dust resistance tests. But after using the smartphone for several days, I did all the tests that were required.
I ran a series of impact tests, meaning I dropped the Bison on the ground, hard surface, and sand. The result was pretty positive. Yes, there were minor scuffs and scratches on the case, but the smartphone worked as expected.
Then I wet my smartphone under running water and even threw it into a small river at a depth of half a meter. After 10 minutes of underwater tests, the smartphone was still functional.
The last test is for dust protection. So, I immersed the Bison smartphone in sand and cement for half an hour. Then I took it out and cleaned it, as you would expect, the device worked as well as if it had been taken out of the box.
As for the materials, rubberized rubber is used on the back surface, but the ends are made of metal alloy. This combination gives the device good sleep performance during falls and other severe operating conditions. At the same time, the build quality is at a fairly decent level and I did not notice any squeaks or other sounds when twisting.
UMIDIGI Bison comes in two colors – yellow and red. But these are only parts of the decor, and the main color is one – black.
Now I’ll tell you a little about the control buttons. On the right side of the case, there are mechanical buttons such as power, a volume rocker, and a button for the camera underwater (custom button). On the left side of the case, there is a fingerprint scanner, a hybrid SIM and memory card slot, and another button for PTT and SOS (or other custom settings).
A Type-C charging port can be seen at the bottom, and a 3.5mm audio headphone jack on top. But the location of the speaker is typical, as for most protected smartphones – it is on the back.
In addition, on the back square in the upper left corner, there is an island of four cameras with an LED flash. Here you can also see the model’s logo and a lace fastener.
Display and screen quality
Considering the fact that UMIDIGI Bison is a rugged smartphone, a modern screen is out of the question. The manufacturer has installed a 6.3-inch IPS screen with a resolution of Full HD+ or 2340 x 1080 pixels.
The aspect ratio of the screen was 19.5: 9, and the pixel density was about 409 PPI. I was pleasantly surprised that a high-quality screen with a high resolution is used on an inexpensive rugged smartphone, which is quite rare.
If we talk about such parameters as color rendition, viewing angles, and the level of brightness values, then everything here is just perfect. I did not find any major problems with the image display quality. And even when using the smartphone for almost the whole day, my eyes did not feel very tired.
Performance, benchmarks tests, and OS
Knowing the fact that UMIDIGI Bison is a rugged smartphone, but performance is not a strong point for many rugged devices. Although, the Bison uses a pretty good processor – Helio P60. It operates at a maximum clock speed of 2.0 GHz.
In addition, not the worst graphics accelerator works with the processor – this is the ARM Mali G72 MP3. I did some playtests and the result was very positive. I was able to actually play even complex full-fledged games such as Asphalt 9, Call of Duty Mobile, and even PUBG Mobile. Of course, the game settings were not maximum, but low and medium.
Besides, I liked the value of the amount of memory. The UMIDIGI Bison had 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage. If the built-in memory is not enough for you, then you can use the additional memory card slot.
Of course, I can’t get past the popular benchmark tests. Below I will leave an album with tests such as Antutu, Geekbench 5, 3DMarks, and others.
Like most modern devices, the Bison rugged smartphone runs Android 10.0. During my tests, I did not find any significant freezing problems and everything was accurate and fast. The user interface has got an almost stock look. But I found some useful apps like flashlight, level, tilt, overhang, and more.
Some information on wireless communication. UMIDIGI Bison has Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.2, GPS, Glonass, Galileo. But most importantly, you can use contactless payment via the NFC module in your smartphone.
Camera and sample photos
It was a pleasant surprise for me when I saw good camera performance on the budget rugged smartphone UMIDIGI Bison. For example, the main camera module received a 48-megapixel resolution with an aperture of f/1.79.
The second module is used for ultra-wide shots and has a resolution of 16 megapixels. But the third and fourth modules are designed for portrait and macro modes, and both sensors received a 5-megapixel resolution.
The smartphone camera app is very simple and intuitive. At the bottom, you can find five modes – beauty, video, photo, portrait, and extra. In the photo settings, you can select the resolution and other features. And in the video settings, I did not find any stabilization, and the maximum resolution was 1080p.
Below I will leave examples of photos taken with UMIDIGI Bison. From myself, I can note that the main camera takes very high-quality pictures, both day and night. I also liked the work of ultra-wide mode and portraits. But the macro mode is not for everyone, and I don’t really like using this mode, since the quality of photos is not the best.
Battery and run time
An important aspect of any smartphone is battery life. The UMIDIGI Bison has a 5000 mAh battery onboard, which can work for about 7 hours with the screen on.
Considering that the smartphone has received Full HD resolution and quite good performance, battery life is not the worst indicator. For example, during my practice, 1 hour of watching a video on Youtube, the device was discharged by 12% and 1 hour of playing games by 19%. This is at the maximum screen brightness level.
Charging time using the supplied power adapter and Type-C cable was 2.5 hours.
Conclusion, reviews, pros, and cons
UMIDIGI Bison is a full-fledged rugged smartphone that is definitely worth your attention. It received a beautiful appearance, but at the same time, it is quite comfortable to control it, given its small dimensions.
The smartphone passed my strength tests positively and proved that it is able to withstand any difficult operating conditions. Other than that, I liked the screen quality, performance, photo quality of the main camera, and even battery life.
Can’t get past the NFC contactless payment sensor. You can rarely find it even in more expensive smartphones.
But there were also some drawbacks, first of all – the weight of the device, the quality of the macro mode is also at a very poor level and the smartphone shoots video only 1080p and without using stabilization.
