I haven’t tested budget TV boxes for quite some time, but today I have one interesting model called TOX 1.
I first met a TV box model from TOX. But will it be able to leave me positive emotions after fully testing the device? You can find out about all the nuances in the detailed review below.
Okay, the first thing I want to draw your attention to is the cost. Currently, you can purchase the new TOX 1 TV box for only up to $50. That is, the TV box belongs to the mid-budget class of devices, but let’s look at the main features and characteristics.
I liked that the device uses a pretty good Amlogic S905X3 processor with 4GB of RAM and 32GB of internal memory. The device itself has controlled thanks to the Android 9 operating system. It also has support for a dual Wi-Fi module, 1000 Bit LAN connections, and much more.
As usual, in my full and detailed review, you can find out not only about the performance, but also I will tell you how the device copes with everyday tasks. Therefore, at the end of the test, you will find brief conclusions about the advantages and disadvantages of the new TV box model.
TOX 1: Specifications
|Maximum External Hard Drives:||MicroSD slot|
|OS:||Android 9.0 Pie|
|Interface:||Gigabit LAN, USB 2.0, UBS 3.0, HDMI|
|Size:||95 x 95 x 22 mm|
Unboxing and packaging
The TV box is delivered in typical package size, like most of its competitors. This is a rectangular package made of rather thick cardboard. To me for a test, the device came intact and without any damage.
The front has the name of the model and company. It turns out that the name of the TOX company is an abbreviation and it means Trust On X.
Inside the box itself, I found it, directly, the TV box itself, documentation, a remote control, an HDMI cable, and a 10W power adapter.
In general, the package looks very standard, as for its price. Therefore, I propose to start the analysis with the appearance of the device.
Design, build quality and materials
Okay, TOX 1 looks very typical, like most TV boxes in the mobile market. I can’t say anything bad about the design, as it is very simple and practical at other times.
If we talk about the materials used, then the device is made of combined plastic. That is, the top and bottom surfaces have received matte plastic, but the side end already uses a glossy material in its performance.
I have no strong complaints about the build quality. So, in general, I think very few people will touch the TV box once again. This is not a smartphone that you carry every day in your pocket or bag. Therefore, I absolutely do not see any problems with the materials used and the build quality.
Okay, now a little information about the dimensions, the TOX 1 model has received dimensions of 95 x 95 x 22 mm, and the device weighs about 240 grams. Naturally, I indicated the dimensions without taking into account the built-in antenna.
Yes, this model has a separate built-in antenna that can improve the signal quality of the wireless connection. It can also be turned off if necessary, for example, when you have a LAN cable permanently connected.
On the top of the case, you can find the model name of the device. In addition, there are ventilation holes there. Also, similar holes can be found in the lower part of the device body and on the side faces. Apparently, there shouldn’t be any problems with the cooling system. But I will tell you more about overheating a little later.
Meanwhile, a small LED screen is located on the front of the TOX 1 TV box. On it, you can find information about the time and the connected Wi-Fi connection. As I said, on the right side, there is a threaded connection for a detachable antenna.
The back of the device received a port for DC power, HDMI output, and a Gigabit LAN connection. But on the left end, they installed one USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports with a slot for a microSD memory card.
I would also like to note that the lower part of the TV box received four rubber feet against slipping. But I didn’t find a special mount for the bracket. Therefore, you will not be able to install the device on a TV or monitor.
The last thing I want to talk about in this section is the remote control. Oddly enough, it received a large number of buttons. Although most of their competitors supply TV boxes with a minimum number of buttons. Whether this makes sense, I cannot say for sure.
But definitely, a large number of buttons will not hurt anyone. The remote control is powered by two AAA batteries.
Performance, video playback, benchmarks, and OS
I cannot call the Amlogic S905X embedded processor the newest of its kind. But it is still very popular because of its good performance. For example, it is based on four ARM Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.5 GHz.
If you look at the results of various benchmark tests, such as AnTuTu and GeekBench 5, you will notice that the figures are not very high. Look, in the first test, the TOX 1 TV box scored about 68 thousand points, and in the second – 129 points in the single-core test and 412 points in the multi-core test.
Responsible for the graphics chipset ARM Mali-450, which has a clock speed of up to 750 MHz. Yes, I even managed to run Asphalt 9 on TOX 1, but sometimes there were frame drops, although the playability was not the worst. In addition, if you want to play simpler games, then the new model of the TV box will not be a problem with this task.
At the beginning of the review, I mentioned that the device uses 4 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal memory. Out of the box, you will have about 26 GB of free memory available. As for the operating speed, it is quite typical for budget TV boxes. That is, in my case, the read speed was 97 MBps, and the write speed was 43 MBps.
I can also note the presence of a dual-band Wi-Fi ac module. During my tests, the internet speed was about 74 Mbps download and upload speed was about 92 Mbps. Also on the TOX 1, there is a Bluetooth 4.2 wireless connection. In general, I did not have any particular problems with wireless communication on the new TV box model.
Before talking about the quality of video playback, I would like to give a little of your attention to the operating system of the device. The new TV box model is powered by Android 9 Pie OS with its own user interface. Yes, it may not be the latest operating system for a TV box. But it has pretty stable and smooth performance.
The user interfaces themselves are very bright on the home screen. Here I found sections such as videos, my files, music, my apps, games, and settings. These cells cannot be removed or relocated. But at the bottom of the main screen, there are icons for various applications. In addition, here you can already add or remove the necessary applications.
The settings section is similar to those on Android smartphones. For example, you can select a language, view information about the firmware and version of the operating system. You can also analyze the memory load and much more.
Okay, now let’s test the TOX 1 device in real life. First of all, I launched the video footage through a USB flash drive.
The video format with 4K resolution and 160 MBps was played without any problems and delays. After that, I went to the Youtube application and started the video also at 4K resolution and 60 frames per second. I was absolutely happy with the result, as the video playback was smooth and without any problems.
Conclusion, reviews, pros, and cons
After full testing of the new TOX 1 TV box model, I was left under a rather positive impression.
Let’s start with the positives that I liked during my use. The first is, of course, performance and memory. Apart from that, I liked the work of the user interface. Yes, I also can’t get past the stable operation of wireless connections, such as Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.
Even this inexpensive TV box copes with the main tasks perfectly. That is, you can easily play movies or videos on Youtube in high resolution in 4K.
On the downside, I can say that this is not the latest version of the Android 9 operating system. Although, to be honest, I do not see this as a major problem, since it works quickly and stably.
Price and where to buy cheaper?
At the time of writing this review, the TOX 1 has a very attractive price tag of $47.63 with a 37% discount.
Therefore, given my main features, I can easily recommend this TV box model for purchase.
