How to improve your old TV for a little money? You need to purchase a new TV box and your TV will become much more advanced in running the Android system. So now I would like to talk about the new Tanix TX5 Max in our review, which has good performance at a good price.
Chinese manufacturer of TV boxes Tanix is known for producing rather high-quality and inexpensive models that compare favorably with the huge number of consoles available on the market. In our reviews, we have repeatedly noted the high-quality build and fairly good software for consoles of this manufacturer.
The first is, of course, the price, it is an important factor when buying a device. Now you can buy a Tanix TX5 Max for only $50.
First of all, the TV box is notable for the increased amount of 4GB RAM and 32GB of eMMC memory, the presence of a small screen and an external Wi-Fi antenna.
Also, it is worth paying attention to the specification when choosing any gadget. Since, for example, you take a TV box not for 1-2 years, but rather for 5-8 years. Therefore, what will be a good performance, so you will be pleased to use the device to view heavy files such as 4K at 60fps.

Tanix TX5 Max: Design and Appearance
The design of all TV boxes is identical to a square box and is usually black in color, like our hero. Also, Tanix TX5 Max in our test has a small display in front. The display is a simple digital indicator, shows only the inscription at boot and time during operation.
With its dimensions of 10.9 x 10.9 x 2.1cm, it fits exactly with the standard mount for TV boxes or mini-PC. Also, there is mounting on the back of a monitor or TV. On the sides of the console are ventilation slots to ensure better cooling of the processor.
On the right side is a slot for a Micro-SD card, USB 2.0 and USB 3.0. When installing the card, it goes quite deep inside the case.
On the other hand, there is an RP-SMA type antenna connector.
Also, behind are the main connectors – coaxial SPDIF, Ethernet, HDMI output, the socket for connecting the power supply. There is also a small hole for the reset button.
It should be noted that SPDIF with a 3.5 mm connector is used here, the interface for transmitting digital audio signals, although the connector looks like a regular headphone jack.
At the bottom of the Tanix TX5 Max TV Box, you can find cooling vents and four rubber feet did not roll on the surface.
Tanix TX5 Max: Menu
The Tanix TX5 Max TV box has no power button, so it turns on immediately when the power cable is connected. At the same time, the display shows “boot”, after which the clock and a small blue indicator appear.
It shines in a pleasant light blue color, does not interfere in the dark. When you turn off the console or sleep with the remote control, the clock does not go out, and the indicator changes color to red.
After a brief system load, the standard desktop launcher appears. A typical tiled interface of Tanix TX5 Max in the analisis with large buttons is very convenient when controlling the console. The upper-status bar and the lower control panel is missing.
There is a standard and advanced system settings menu.
There is also a classic settings menu.
There is a separate page for adjusting the brightness, contrast of the displayed image, as well as a page for adjusting the image size.
Tanix TX5 Max: Software
The Tanix TX5 Max runs on Android 8.1. Firmware update over the air is supported, but there are currently no updates.
When you turn on the TV box, you will immediately see already installed applications in the form of icons, such as Google Chrome browser, Media center for playing video, Audio and Photos, AirScreen and WifiDisplay for broadcasting images from mobile devices, Netflix, New CloudTV for watching online channels (foreign), built-in video player, Play Store, Kodi-based RKMC, YouTube and gallery. There are no problems with embedded applications.
The built-in Chinese media center is already fully translated into English, it allows you to conveniently run any files.
There are two file managers, the first of them is correctly controlled only with the help of a connected mouse, the second is quite convenient to control the console.
The built-in applications of Tanix TX5 Max for viewing online TV channels Modero, Film on TV, New CloudTV – more or less work, but there is nothing special to watch, only foreign content.
Youtube application works fine, optimized for remote control.
In the settings, you can select a resolution up to 4K, which is not common.
Chrome browser works fine and allows you to easily open a lot of tabs, the benefit of the RAM in the device abound.
Necessary applications can be installed from the Play Store or from a local file.
Tanix TX5 Max: Hardware and Performance
The new processor Amlogic S905X2, which allows you to watch videos or even play games at high demands. The work of 4GB of RAM allows you to open a large number of tabs without any delays in work.
In general, the following are the results of the testing of the TV box and you can compare it with existing competitors. I just want to inform you that for its price these are good results that will please the owner when using TV box.
The system has already installed ROOT access, this is a plus bonus.
The memory speed of Tanix TX5 Max is pretty good:
RAM: 1087.86 Mb/s
ROM: read 59.40 Mb/s write 51.58 Mb/s
USB 3.0: reading 73.76 Mb/s recording 12.99 Mb/s
The Geekbench test showed a rather mediocre performance result.
3DMark Ice Storm benchmark with a score of 2185.
Bonsai Benchmark – 1210 points with FPS: 17.2.
The Wi-Fi module operates in the 2.4G and 5G bands, the Ethernet port operates at speeds up to 100Mb. For both connection options, the connection occurs without problems and is kept at an acceptable level, sufficient to play high-resolution online video.
I especially want to note the good sensitivity of the module at a frequency of 5 GHz, thanks to an external antenna.
In the process of testing and playing heavy video, the temperature of the processor reached a rather high level above 90 degrees.
CPU Throttling Test showed that when the console is heated above 90 degrees, to avoid overheating, the system begins to reduce the frequency of the processor (throttling).
This can affect the overall performance of the system, so if you plan to use consoles with large loads, you need to think about a more efficient cooling of the processor. During normal operation playback of most videos (not test ones), channels, in games – throttling is not observed.
Using a wireless Bluetooth connection, you can easily connect a gamepad, and use it in games that support it.
As for power, the Mali-G31 MP2 graphics processor, built into the SoC Amlogic S905X2, runs any Android game without any problems, but mostly only at medium performance settings.
Tanix TX5 Max: Video playback
When testing the TV box for playback of the test 4K video package and H.265 decoding, etc., there were no special problems. The processor, as it should be, copes with the heavy video well. For full support of all formats, it is recommended to use the MXPlayer media player with HW + decoder enabled.
Additionally installed popular application for viewing the online video – HD VideoBox, which, in conjunction with the MX Player on this console works flawlessly.
Playing TV channels using an IPTV application and a playlist from an Internet provider – works without problems.
Tanix TX5 Max: Conclusions and Reviews
Overall, the Tanix TX5 Max works nicely and stable in our review. The speed of response to the commands of the TV box is excellent, the applications work without failures and departures.
The increased amount of RAM does not give a tangible performance advantage, but 32 GB of internal memory is a plus.
Also, the advantage is the presence of an external WiFi antenna, thanks to which the signal reception, especially at a frequency of 5 GHz, is very good.
The TV box plays any video without any problems, except for the rather high temperature of the processor under heavy load. Therefore, it is not recommended to install it behind the TV in a warm zone or cover it with something.
Tanix TX5 Max: Price and Where to buy cheaper?
As I wrote at the beginning of the article, you can already buy a Tanix TX5 Max TV box at a low price for only $49.99 and get an additional 25% OFF discount from 14 to 20 Jun and this is also a plus to the price.
Frankly speaking, this is a good TV box that will help you upgrade your TV and make it running on Android 8.1 for a long time to use.
