Sony Xperia L4 Review:  Helio P22 and Android 9.0 in 2020?

or a long time I have not tested and did not hold smartphones from Sony in my hands, but today I will correct it and want to tell you about my first impressions of a new budget model called Sony Xperia L4.

Exactly a year ago, Sony introduced its low-cost model Xperia L3, which hit the market. Therefore, let’s find out what to expect from the new generation Xperia L4. In addition, I will share with you what I liked and did not like in the next smartphone from Sony.

If we talk about the price, the new generation almost does not exceed last year’s module. For example, today you can order a Sony Xperia L4 for €199.00 or about $220.

I think that many will agree with me that a smartphone can hardly be called a budget, even if you look at the technical specs. The device received a similar chipset, like last year’s version – this is Helio P22, which is paired with a 3/64GB version of the memory.

But, the smartphone received a completely new design, a large 6.2-inch IPS screen, three sensors of the main camera, and an improved 3580 mAh battery with Type-C port.

Let’s find out what the new smartphone is capable of and whether it makes sense when there are many devices from Xiaomi.

Unboxing

Another smartphone from Sony comes in a small white box, where you can see only the name of the model and company.

Inside the box there is a standard assortment of various accessories – this is the smartphone itself, an instruction manual, a Type-C charging cable, and a 17.5W power adapter.

Here I did not find any protective silicone case and headphones. Despite this, I am completely satisfied with the bundle, but the cheaper Xiaomi smartphone options offer the best choice.

Design

The appearance of the Sony Xperia L4 is very much like any other model from Sony. There is a wide aspect ratio of the screen 21: 9 and the corners of the device are quite sharp. Therefore, confusing which smartphone you have in your hand will not be difficult.

But if we talk about material assemblies, then the Xperia L4 is made of plastic on the rear panel and side faces, but the screen has a Gorilla Glass 5 protected glass.

If the materials in the smartphone used are not the most premium, but the build quality is not affected in any way. I like how the device lies in the hand, it is convenient to use, and the matte plastic does not leave any fingerprints during operation.

Another interesting point for me was the location of the main camera. Yes, you can say it is typical for most smartphones, but the modules themselves are on the same level as the back panels. Nothing sticks out and does not stick out here – it really looks unusual, like for a modern smartphone.

If we talk about the dimensions, then the Xperia L4 received 159 x 71 x 8.7 mm and a weight of 178 grams.

The front side of the smartphone received a 6.2 inch IPS screen with a resolution of HD or 720 x 1680 pixels. The screen to body ratio was about 79.5% and the pixel density of 295 PPI.

Despite the small screen resolution, in real life there will be plenty of it. No individual pixels are visible here, and the colors look very realistic and vibrant.

On the top of the screen there is a waterdrop notch for the front camera. This solution is rare, but on budget devices the notch is still present, and even in 2020.

Also, the screen is quite bright and it will be comfortable to use even in sunny weather. In addition, watching movies and playing games is quite comfortable thanks to the large viewing angles.

As for the control, the Xperia L4 received a volume rocker, a fingerprint scanner, and a power button on the right side. The fingerprint scanner is fast and accurate.

The lower part has a Type-C port, a microphone, and the main speaker. The presence of Type-C connections is already pleasing. A slot for a SIM card and a hybrid format memory card was installed on the left side of the case. The upper edge received a 3.5 mm headphone port.

Well, the design of the Sony Xperia L4 is almost indistinguishable from any other modern smartphone from Sony. Judging by the build quality and usability, I have no strong comments.

Performance and Software

If the appearance of the new generation of the budget smartphone Sony Xperia L4 has completely changed compared to the previous one, then the hardware remains the same.

Sony Xperia L4 Review:  Helio P22 and Android 9.0 in 2020?

As I mentioned, the Xperia L4 uses the MT6762 Helio P22 processor from Mediatek. I can’t call it advanced or better than from the Snapdragon brand.

I will always remain a fan of Snapdragon since devices on the Mediatek chips do not work as smoothly as on Snapdragon.

Why companies even saved on the filling here, I don’t have any idea. The performance of the Helio P22 processor is rather weak, for example, benchmark tests show rather low results.

If you look at the AnTuTu test, the smartphone scored about 74 thousand points, and as for a modern device, it is very small.

Sony Xperia L4 Review:  Helio P22 and Android 9.0 in 2020?

Yes, I agree, you can play almost all heavy games, such as PUBG Mobile, Asphalt 9 and others, but only at low graphics settings.

Inside Sony Xperia L4 installed 3GB of RAM and 64GB of internal memory. If there is not enough internal memory, you can use the microSDXC format memory card slot.

Another disappointment for me was the software – it is Android 9.0. Many Chinese manufacturers, such as Umidigi, Oukitel, and other brands have been using Android 10 for a long time, then I can’t even imagine what the reason for the old OS version from Sony is.

I agree that the Xperia L4 has a completely clean user interface, but the old version of the software really disappointed me.

If we talk about wireless connectivity, the device received a dual Wi-Fi network, Bluetooth 5.0, and also has an NFC module. Each element works quickly and I did not find any comments.

Camera

The new Sony Xperia L4 received three main camera modules, where the main one is a 13-megapixel camera with f/2.0 aperture. The second sensor has a 5-megapixel resolution with f/2.2 aperture for ultra-wide shots. The last third sensor uses a 2-megapixel resolution for bokeh shots.

On the front of the device, there is a selfie camera with a resolution of 8 megapixels.

Again, when compared with last year’s model, the main camera modules did not receive any improvements. Only a wide-angle camera was added, but this also can not but rejoice.

The quality of the pictures is average, I’ll leave a photo album below and you can compare the quality for yourself.

Battery

A small improvement was the increased battery capacity from 3300 to 3580 mAh. Yes, this is not the largest indicator for a modern smartphone, but a full day of active use will be enough for you.

Sony Xperia L4 Review:  Helio P22 and Android 9.0 in 2020?

As practice showed at the end of the working day, the Sony Xperia L4 still had about 20% of the charge level. At the same time, I actively used a smartphone, for example, watched a video, played games, surfed on social networks, and talked a lot.

A full charge from 0 to 100% will take you about 1.5 hours through a 17.5W power adapter.

Conclusion and Reviews

I have no doubt that the new Sony Xperia L4 will be another bestseller for Sony. But the smartphone has several strong drawbacks that I can not miss.

Sony Xperia L4 Review:  Helio P22 and Android 9.0 in 2020?

The first is overpriced, the price of about $220 is very high for a rather weak device in terms of performance and other features. For this cost, you can find more interesting options from Xiaomi.

Also, I did not like the Helio P22 processor, I would like to see here chipsets from Snapdragon. The quality of the camera is almost the same as its predecessor.

Naturally, the main feature of any model from Sony Xperia is its appearance. Here, the manufacturer has a good number of advantages and pleasant qualities, such as Type-C and a 3.5 mm audio port.

Price and Where to buy cheaper?

Currently, each user will be able to buy the Sony Xperia L4 for about $220.

Therefore, because of the high cost, I can not recommend a smartphone for purchase, but if you are an ardent fan of Sony, then you will definitely like the model.
