Samsung Galaxy A71 Review: Huge Screen and Snapdragon 730

Samsung’s flagship smartphone is not affordable for every user, so the manufacturer released last year two budget models called Galaxy A50 and A70. According to statistics, sales of these models were very high and therefore the company introduced two updated smartphones to the market at the end of 2019 – these are the Samsung Galaxy A51 and Samsung Galaxy A71.

If you are our regular reader, then you could see our review about the younger version of Galaxy A51. Today we will talk about a more improved version of the Galaxy A71.

The prices for the updated model of the Galaxy A71 smartphone start at $470 and agree that the price is generally not small, as for the middle-class smartphone.

The main improvements between the Galaxy A70 and A71, I can attribute are a 64-megapixel camera and an improved processor, namely the Snapdragon 730. Other features remain the same, for example, a 6.7-inch AMOLED screen, a 6/128 GB version of the memory, a fingerprint scanner under the screen, a 4500 mAh battery with 25W fast charging and much more.

Let’s get started with a detailed review of the updated model and I will start, as usual, with unpacking.

Samsung Galaxy A71: Unboxing

A smartphone came to my desk in a small white box, where the smartphone and the model name are drawn on the front.

Inside the box, I was met, directly, by the smartphone itself with a color film on the screen and technical features.

Other accessories lay a bit lower, such as a Type-C charging cable to the Type-C connector, a 25 W power adapter and headphones.

As we all are accustomed to, you can find a protective silicone case on Chinese smartphones, but Samsung does not offer such an option. Otherwise, I am completely satisfied with the configuration and quality of components.

Samsung Galaxy A71: Design

The appearance of the updated mid-range smartphone received a very interesting design, like the Samsung Galaxy A51 And Galaxy A71. The first thing you pay attention to is a large 6.7-inch screen with a hole-punch in the middle of the top of the screen for the front camera.

Finally, Samsung gets rid of the waterdrop notch and takes small steps to a full-fledged frameless smartphone. But I want to make a small remark on the Galaxy A71, which has a slightly larger hole size than the

On the front is a large screen with a size of 6.7 inches with a resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels. Indeed, the screen size turned out to be larger than even the Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus, and in this case, the size is the main feature of the Galaxy A71 model.

Samsung Galaxy A71 Review: Huge Screen and Snapdragon 730

The device uses AMOLED technology with very bright and contrasting colors. The aspect ratio was 20: 9 and the area occupied by the screen on the front of the device was 87.2%. Even with such a large screen, the pixel density was 393 ppi and this is not a bad indicator.

In addition, the smartphone has a scratch-resistant glass – Corning Gorilla Glass 3. Of course, this is not the latest generation of protection, but in any case, when buying a device, the user must also add a protective glass.

Samsung Galaxy A71 Review: Huge Screen and Snapdragon 730

I have no complaints about the quality of the screen. This is a well-tuned and bright screen, which has in its arsenal the functions of Alway-On Display with all notifications and other settings. But on the quality of the fingerprint scanner, I have a small remark.

Samsung Galaxy A71 Review: Huge Screen and Snapdragon 730

For example, the response speed is not the fastest and among competitors, for example, Xiaomi Mi 9T or other devices, it works an order of magnitude faster. Also, when unlocking, the Galaxy A71 can notice a mini delay, but this is not very critical.

Samsung Galaxy A71 Review: Huge Screen and Snapdragon 730

Given its price of about $ 500, the case of the Samsung Galaxy A71 is made of plastic. It will be impossible to see premium materials, such as glass or metal, on middle-class models. I have no comments on the assembly and the smartphone is well assembled. I did not notice any backlash or creak during the test.

Also on the rear panel, you can see a rectangular area with four main camera sensors and an LED flash. The color solutions are very diverse and you can choose a color to your taste without any problems.

The standard control buttons – this is the power and volume keys located on the right side. A full-fledged slot with dual SIM cards and a memory card on the left side. Indeed, I was surprised that the device does not use a hybrid slot.

Samsung Galaxy A71 Review: Huge Screen and Snapdragon 730

The lower part of the Galaxy A71 received the main speaker, which does not sound so bad, in general, the sound through it is decent. There is also a Type-C port for charging, a 3.5 mm audio jack, and a microphone hole. The upper part has only an additional hole of the noise-canceling microphone.

The smartphone, although large with a size of 6.7 inches, but lies comfortably in the hand and at the same time, it is convenient to watch movies or play games with such a large screen. Given my appearance, I am generally pleased with the design of the new smartphone in the Galaxy A series.

Samsung Galaxy A71: Performance and Software

The updated Galaxy A71 model did not pass by performance. Now the device has received an interesting Snapdragon 730 processor, which is built on 8-nanometer technology. It consists of 2 cores with a frequency of 2.2 GHz Kryo 470 and & 6 cores with a frequency of 1.8 GHz Kryo 470.

In addition, the processor is paired with the Adreno 618 graphics chip and it performs its tasks at a high level. Even heavy games you can play on medium graphics settings without any problems. After more than one hour of testing in various games, the smartphone practically did not heat up.

Two versions are available from memory, this is 6/8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal memory. If you don’t have enough internal memory space, then the manufacturer has installed a full-fledged slot with a memory card, which will not cause damage to dual SIM cards.

As usual, below I will present tests of various benchmarks and you can compare them with other competitors.

If we talk about the software, the Samsung Galaxy A71 is built on the basis of Android 10.0 with the user interface One UI 2. This is a simple interface, which at the same time has a very wide range of various functions in the settings.

Samsung Galaxy A71 Review: Huge Screen and Snapdragon 730

You can set the main screen for yourself, for example, the desired number of grid cells with icons and much more. I would like to note that the fingerprint scanner is not the only protection against hacking, and you can also use the face recognition feature of the owner. I want to say that it works fast and much better than the fingerprint scanner under the screen.

Samsung Galaxy A71 Review: Huge Screen and Snapdragon 730

Of course, in the software, you can find all the familiar applications from Google and its services, as well as branded applications of the company and social networks. The shell of the Samsung Galaxy A71 works stably and most importantly, is smart and fast.

Samsung Galaxy A71 Review: Huge Screen and Snapdragon 730

As for communication, I did not find any problems, the communication signal is holding well and phone conversations are at the usual level. For this level of the smartphone, it’s no secret that the Galaxy A71 has an NFC module installed. It works without any comments about our smartphone market.

Samsung Galaxy A71: Camera

I had very high expectations for the main camera of the Samsung Galaxy A71, which received the main 64-megapixel module with f/1.8 aperture. But in practice, the quality of the photos was almost no different from the 48-megapixel module from the Xiaomi brand, and in some cases was even worse.

Samsung Galaxy A71 Review: Huge Screen and Snapdragon 730

The second 12-megapixel camera module with an f/2.2 aperture was created for ultra-wide shots. The result was expected and the photos were lost in detail, even if we compare our competitors from Xiaomi.

Samsung Galaxy A71 Review: Huge Screen and Snapdragon 730

The second and third camera modules are 5-megapixel sensors with f/2.4 and f/2.2 aperture, where one of them is for macro shooting, and the other for bokeh mode. Here I have no questions, they work without any comments.

Galaxy A71

The same goes for the selfie camera, which received a 32-megapixel camera with an f/2.2 aperture. The photos were very bright and saturated on the front camera.

The video shooting is available with a maximum resolution of 4K and 30 frames per second, but stabilization only works with Full HD resolution.

Samsung Galaxy A71: Battery

Like the previous generation, the new Galaxy A71 received a completely identical battery capacity – it’s 4500 mAh. In practice, this battery capacity will last up to 2 days with active use. I think this is a good indicator of a modern smartphone with a huge screen.

Samsung Galaxy A71 Review: Huge Screen and Snapdragon 730

Of course, autonomy was affected – this was the use of an AMOLED screen and high technology processor with low power consumption.

I was also pleased with the fast charging with a 25W power adapter and the charging time from 0 to 100% will take about 1.5 hours.

Samsung Galaxy A71: Conclusion and Reviews

After one week of testing and using the new Samsung Galaxy A71 smartphone, I was under a bright and unpleasant feeling.

Samsung Galaxy A71 Review: Huge Screen and Snapdragon 730

For example, a plastic case is not the most premium material, the quality of the main 64-megapixel camera is almost the same as the 48-megapixel module, and the overpriced are the main disadvantages of this model.

The advantages I can attribute are a bright and high-quality AMOLED screen with a large size, high-level performance, as well as the work of the user interface with its functionality. And, of course, battery life, which will be 2 days of active use, was not spared.

Samsung Galaxy A71: Price and Where to buy cheaper?

Now you can buy a Samsung Galaxy A71 smartphone at a price of $473.99 and with a 17% discount.

Given its price, it is difficult for me to recommend a smartphone for purchase, but the overall impression I have remained positive, despite its shortcomings.
