Xiaomi’s Redmi subbrand already produces not only well-known mobile devices but also ultra-thin modern laptops with good performance. Today I would like to share my experience of using with a model called RedmiBook 14.
In the review, we discuss technical specifications, conduct a series of tests, play games and find out what potential a laptop has for everyday use.
Currently, the price of the RedmiBook 14 is not small and starts at $719 for the basic package.
A notebook with such specs came to me – an Intel Core i5-8265U processor, but you can also order a model with an Intel Core i7-8565U, internal memory of 512 GB SSD, 8 GB RAM, and a graphics processor – NVIDIA GeForce MX250.
Well, the technical part is quite adequate, and I can already say that this laptop will cope with modern games. Let’s test it in practice, but first, look at the appearance.

RedmiBook 14: Unboxing
In our studio, the laptop came in a standard and unremarkable box. On the front side, I see only the inscription – RedmiBook, at the bottom and on the top right is the icon from Xiaomi.
I found it inside the box – this is the laptop itself, which is protected by foam clips and film. Nearby there is a separate box where the power adapter and cable with a Chinese plug.
Adapters and other elements I have not found. I would like Chinese shops to send stickers for the keyboard in the kit since not everyone knows the English language.
Separately, I would recommend another buy a protective case that prevents the device from scratches and other troubles.
RedmiBook 14: Design and Appearance
The laptop RedmiBook 14 is completely made of aluminum, so its weight is small, only 1.5 kg. If you travel a lot, this model will be the perfect companion.
The size of the device is 323 x 228 x 17.95 mm, so I can call it an ultrabook since the thickness is similar to some models of smartphones with large capacity batteries or rugged phones.
The laptop has a nice gray color, and as you can see its edges are not rounded and this solution looks great. The appearance of the RedmiBook resembles the MacBook Air, but at the same time, it is much cheaper.
On the face of the cover, I see only the inscription “Redmi Designed by Xiaomi” – it looks minimalistic.
On the underside of the device, the first thing that rushes into your eyes is the two elongated rubber feet above and below so that the laptop does not slide on the working surface. They also serve as cooling and air intake for the RedmiBook laptop.
Also, many air vents are present on the underside for high-quality cooling and air intake. The exit of hot air occurs due to the ventilation holes between the keyboard case and the screen.
Also, two speakers are located on the bottom of the laptop, in the center you can see stickers with the main components and technical characteristics.
On the left side of the case are the following ports – DC port for power, HDMI and two USB 3.0 connectors.
On the right side of the notebook is a 3.5 mm audio jack for headphones and USB 2.0. Such ports as Type-C and microSD slot, you will not find on this model.
The practical test for opening with one hand, this laptop model did not pass, as 90% of all laptops on the market of mobile devices.
But I want to note that the hinges mounting the screen with the case such as on a MacBook and hold the screen clearly without any hesitation and swinging. Therefore, I can confidently say that further use of the RedmiBook 14 hinges will not lead to premature failure.
The keyboard and touchpad on the device look very simple, but the minimal design is always used in products from Xiaomi.
The keys have a full size, typing – occurs at a good and responsive level. The distance between the keys is the most convenient, so I did not encounter the wrong set. Problems with the keyboard during testing, I did not find. The disadvantage can be attributed – the lack of keyboard backlight, so at night you will have to use a lamp.
The top row of buttons is functional and with FN – you can adjust settings such as brightness, sound, and others. The power button is located in the upper right corner next to Delete and it has a white LED indicator.
The design and build quality of the laptop is done flawlessly and this proves once again that the Redmi sub-brand produces high-quality devices for reasonable money.
RedmiBook 14: Screen
The RedmiBook got 14-inch screen size with Full HD resolution of 1080 by 1920 pixels in our test. The IPS matrix and black matte anti-glare screen read easily and even on a sunny bright day.
As you can see, the frames around the screen are rather thin and makeup 5.75 mm on the right and left sides. The lower and upper frame a little more.
As for me, a big disadvantage is a lack of a front camera in a familiar place for us. In general, it does not exist at all, so video calls will be a problem for some users.
The ratio of the screen area to the front surface is 81.2%, the viewing angles are ideal, and even with a strong tilt, the color rendition remains unchanged.
The quality of the screen is made on a standard level and it is difficult to find any shortcomings, the brightness is good and the colors are saturated. In general, like any laptop in this price range.
RedmiBook 14: Hardware and Performance
As I wrote above, RedmiBook 14 comes in two configurations – this is an Intel Core i5-8265U or i7-8565U. In my test, I have the first version, also 8 GB of RAM and 512 GB SSD memory.
The processor was introduced last year in the third quarter, so this is a new chipset made with 14 nm technology with a maximum clock frequency of 3.9 GHz.
Integrated graphics card – Intel UHD Graphics 620 and also a separate graphics chip – NVIDIA GeForce MX250 with 2 GB of RAM.
The speed of the memory at a good level, below you can see the results of speed tests. The multitasking with its RAM will be sufficient for everyday use or even games.
Benchmarks performance results on RedmiBook 14 can be seen below.
As for the real performance, I ran some of the latest games, such as Mafia 3, Anthem, Metro Exodus and others. The graphics settings, of course, are not ultra-high, but even at high settings, it was comfortable to play.
Therefore, I can firmly say that this is not a gaming laptop, but in terms of performance, you can safely play heavy games, render and edit videos in 4K resolution.
With simple and everyday tasks laptop RedmiBook 14 coped without any difficulties during our testing.
RedmiBook 14: Software
Out of the box, the RedmiBook 14 laptop in our test came with the Chinese version of the Windows 10 operating system. Therefore, the first thing I decided to do was install a full-fledged Windows 10 operating system with all languages and functions.
After installing the new OS, I have only one Chinese program left on my desktop that shows the main technical specs.
The interface worked flawlessly stable and responsive, no problems with the user interface were detected by me.
In general, the operating system is the same as on other models of laptops from the company Xiaomi, which were originally designed for the Chinese market. Therefore, when buying it is worth paying attention, but this problem is solved by simple reinstallation, which will take no more than 1 hour.
RedmiBook 14: Connection
Like any modern device, the RedmiBook 14 laptop has two 2.4 and 5.0 GHz modular WiFi with support for AC networks. Below you can see the download speed test, I did not notice anything remarkable, but I did not find any interruptions. The wireless network works stably and well.
Also, I want to note that the device comes with the latest version of Bluetooth 5.0. Now you can connect a wireless headset or other peripherals with less power consumption and good connectivity up to 10 meters from the source.
RedmiBook 14: Battery and Overheating
The manufacturer does not say the exact figures of the battery capacity in the laptop RedmiBook 14, but according to my feelings, the battery is about 5000 mAh.
The battery life with an average load is about 10 hours. With active use and watching movies, autonomy will be less than about 7 hours. But this is also an excellent indicator.
Also, if the laptop is turned off, in 35 minutes it will be able to fill the battery charge level by 50% through 1C fast charging.
As for overheating? Below you can see a picture with my thermal imager, which shows that in normal mode the temperature does not exceed 45 degrees.
With active use – the temperature rises to 70 degrees, and the noise increases, due to the built-in active cooling of the coolers. Although in everyday and simple processes – the noise from the coolers is not audible at all.
RedmiBook 14: Conclusions and Reviews
Undoubtedly, the RedmiBook 14 laptop is much better than other Chinese laptops that we tested before, from manufacturers such as XIDU, Chuwi or Teclast. This relates not only performance but also build quality.
Thanks to good performance, the use of Intel Core i5-8265U processor and NVIDIA GeForce MX250 graphics chip, the laptop copes with difficult tasks without any effort. But do not forget that this is not a gaming laptop and at ultra-high settings, you will not play the latest modern games.
The screen with anti-reflective matte coating shows an excellent picture with good bright and regular colors.
The battery life will delight any user for the entire day without recharging the device. Another advantage is fast charging, which will not leave you in a difficult situation at a critical moment.
If you are looking for a demanding and well-equipped laptop for quick operations, then RedmiBook 14 will be a great solution.
RedmiBook 14: Price and Where to buy cheaper?
Now you can buy a RedmiBook 14 laptop with a basic version for $719.99 – this is i5-8265U and 256 GB SSD. The version with i7-8565U and 512 GB SSD costs $869.99 and the version with i5-8265U and 512 GB SSD costs $789.99.
The choice of configurations is not great, but the prices are pleasant, both for their design and technical specifications.
