I recently told you about the new Redmi 9 smartphone, which I really liked. Today we will talk about the even more budget model Redmi 9A.
In this review, I will share with you the main technical features and specs, advantages, and disadvantages.
Before getting into a detailed review, let’s talk about the price. Currently, the Redmi 9A smartphone is already officially on sale in the Chinese market. Therefore, buying or ordering a device will not be problematic. The price will be $100.
I would also like to remind you that the price tag for the Redmi 9 will be $18 then the starting price of the cheaper version.
As for the technical features, everything is not so bad here either. For example, Redmi 9A received a large 6.53-inch screen, a MediaTek Helio G25 processor with 2/32 GB of memory, and a 5000 mAh battery.
As for a budget device, the technical stuff is not very strong, but I liked some of the features. Such as high battery capacity, modern chipset, and large bright screen.

Unboxing and what goes inside the box?
The Redmi 9A device comes in a small box, where on the front you can find pictures of smartphones in different colors and the model name.
Inside the box, I found not such a familiar assortment of equipment that I would like to see. For example, this is the smartphone itself, but there is no protective silicone case included. Also in the box, I found a Micro USB charging cable, a power adapter, and instructions.
I was quite upset when I saw that the kit comes with a Micro USB cable instead of Type-C. I think the manufacturer Xiaomi should be ashamed to release a Micro USB cable in 2020.
Design, build quality and materials used
The appearance of Redmi 9A is almost the same when compared to the previous generation Redmi 8A. For example, the bezel has the same waterdrop notch for the front camera.
The bezels around the screen are quite large, so you can immediately guess that the smartphone belongs to the budget category of devices.
Despite this, the front part received a slightly larger screen size compared to the previous generation. Now the screen is 6.53 inches, and in the eighth version, it was 6.22 inches. The resolution remains the same – HD+ since the screen received a slightly different aspect ratio, namely 20: 9, the number of pixels is slightly different – 720 x 1600.
In general, I liked the quality of the screen, but you should not expect high miracles from it. Yes, it is convenient to watch movies or play games on a smartphone, but your eyes will get tired more than it would be in Full HD resolution.
In terms of brightness, 400 nits would be enough for comfortable indoor use, even outdoors in bright weather I could easily read messages.
The back of the smartphone is made of matte corrugated plastic, so the device does not slip out of your hands. When compared with the previous generation Redmi 8A and the new Redmi 9A, the location of the main camera has changed. It is now positioned in the upper left corners instead of in the center.
The build quality of all elements is at a good level and I have no strong complaints. Of course, I would like to expect better materials in manufacturing. But matte and corrugated plastic is also not a bad solution, as for an inexpensive smartphone.
At the bottom of the device, there is a MicroUSB port, microphone, and speaker. Above is only a 3.5 mm audio jack for headphones.
Right here is a volume rocker and a power button. And on the left, you can find a slot for dual nano-SIM cards and a separate slot for a memory card.
On my own, I would like to note that I did not find an infrared sensor on top, which is convenient to control household appliances. But for the 3.5 mm jack, I was very happy, as well as a separate slot for a memory card.
Based on the large screen, using the smartphone with one hand will be problematic. For example, the dimensions of the Redmi 9A were 164.9 x 77 x 9 mm and the smartphone weighs about 194 grams.
Therefore, the design of the new generation Redmi 9A has remained almost the same as the previous model. But let’s see how much the filling has changed and how smoothly the user interface began to work.
Performance, benchmarks, and software
The main change in the new generation of Redmi 9A is the emergence of a processor from MediaTek. I want to remind you that the last generation had a more reliable processor, namely Snapdragon.
Frankly speaking, I have more confidence in the Snapdragon processor. Therefore, cooperation with MediaTek processors does not cause much delight in me.
But one thing pleases me that the processor model was released this year and that is MediaTek Helio G25. It received 12-nanometer technology and has eight cores from Cortex-A53 with a clock speed of 2.0 GHz
Also, this processor is paired with a graphics accelerator – PowerVR GE8320. It showed itself not bad in gaming tests and in benchmarks, but there is one drawback – it’s a little heating. Below I will leave a few benchmark tests and you can compare it with other models.
In terms of the amount of memory, it is not as widespread here as in other Chinese state employees, for example, as in Umidigi. The Redmi 9A offers only one modification – 2GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage.
I want to remind you that the previous generation of Redmi 8A had a wider list of modifications in terms of memory – this is 2, 3, or 4 GB of RAM and 32 and 64 GB of internal memory.
Therefore, given its technical features, I believe that Redmi 9A received much worse performance than its older brother.
Despite this, the software has received the latest version and the device runs on Android 10 with the MIUI 12 user interface. There are many interesting, and most importantly useful functions. For example, gesture controls, customization of different kinds of themes, and many other features.
Considering that the smartphone has 2 GB of RAM, it will be problematic to open a large number of applications. Therefore, multitasking in this regard will lag slightly. But for two or three applications, RAM will be enough.
The user interfaces itself is nimble and fast. But complex applications do not open as quickly as I would like.
Minor improvements include Bluetooth 5.0 and fast GPS navigation. Although the budget smartphone Redmi 9A does not have a contactless payment, namely the NFC module.
Camera, examples, and quality of photos
From a technical point of view, Redmi 9A received an updated main camera module with a 13-megapixel resolution.
But the front camera got some deterioration, as the Redmi 8A had an 8-megapixel resolution, and the new generation received 5-megapixel resolution.
Overall, the photo quality on both cameras is pretty good when shooting in good lighting conditions. In the dark or indoors, the quality deteriorates at times. The video shoots in Full HD at 30 frames per second.
Below I will leave an album with photos that were taken with the Redmi 9A. But on my own, I want to note that the camera is very weak and I would like to get additional modules for wide-angle shooting or bokeh mode.
Battery, operating time and charging
Like the last generation of the budget smartphone, the Redmi 9A received a 5000mAh battery capacity. But do not forget that the screen size has become larger and the chipset has changed, compared to the Redmi 8A.
As my practice has shown, the battery life with active use. For example, watching movies, playing games, taking photos, and even doing benchmark tests, the battery was 44% at the end of the day. If you watch Youtube at maximum brightness, then in 1 hour the battery will drop by 8%. If you play games, then by 14% in one hour.
The negative side of the Redmi 9A is the presence of a MicroUSB port. Why the manufacturer decided to do this, I cannot say. But I note that the previous generation of Redmi 8A has a Type-C port with 18W fast charging. The new smartphone did not receive any fast charging and only a 10W power adapter.
Thus, the charging time will be more than 3.5 hours.
Conclusion, reviews, pros, and cons
Redmi 9A is not the best choice when choosing an inexpensive smartphone. It got a lot of flaws. Even the previous generation Redmi 8A looks much more interesting and modern from a technical point of view.
On the positive side of Redmi 9A, I can attribute – high-quality assembly and materials of use. Also, the screen size is larger, decent battery life.
The negative side of the Redmi 9A is a micro USB port with 10W slow charging, one memory modification, the emergence of a MediaTek processor instead of Snapdragon.
Price and where to buy cheaper?
Now you can buy the new Redmi 9A model at a good price of about $ 99 with a 20% discount.
But I cannot recommend the new generation of the smartphone since it received many negative sides. Even the previous generation Redmi 8A will be better from a technical point of view. It’s also better to add $18 dollars and buy the new Redmi 9 model.
