Xiaomi’s Redmi sub-brand has released a new budget smartphone called Redmi 9.
I ordered a smartphone about a month ago on pre-order and finally, the device is already in my hands. In addition, I have been using the smartphone for about 4 days and can share with you my emotions from this unit.
At the time of purchase, the smartphone cost me $129 for the 4/64 GB version of the memory. Now the price tag is slightly higher, but I think that in the near future the hype will subside and the price tag will be the same.
If you look at the technical component of the smartphone Redmi 9, you can see several unusual solutions. This is the presence of a processor from Mediatek – Helio G80. Of course, I’m already used to the availability of processors from Snapdragon, but the company decided to save a little and is not the first time offering budget smartphones on Mediatek chipsets.
Also, the new Redmi smartphone received a 6.53-inch screen with Full HD resolution, NFC, Android 10 software, quad main camera, and a large battery capacity of 5020 mAh with fast charging at 18 watts.
Will the new budget smartphone surprise me? Let’s find out in the full review, where I will tell my impressions, as well as the pros and cons.

As I said, I ordered a smartphone about 1 month ago and a white box came to me and without any damage. The box has typical dimensions like most other smartphones in this line.
The front side of the box received a drawing of a smartphone and there is a model name. The backside received a sticker with the main specs.
When I open the box, I am greeted by an envelope with a SIM needle, instructions, and a silicone transparent black case. Below is the smartphone itself in the transport film, Type-C charging cable, and a 10W power adapter.
The first acquaintance with Redmi 9 is quite positive, but let’s take a closer look at the smartphone.
The appearance of Redmi 9 has changed only on the rear panel, the front surface has remained the same. This is a large 6.53 inch IPS screen with Full HD resolution.
If we talk about the quality of the screen, then I have no questions. In addition, the presence of a Full HD screen is a little surprising to me, since the smartphone is quite budget and its counterparts usually have a screen with HD resolution.
The device is made without any innovations since the front camera is located in a small waterdrop notch. This solution has been around for a long time, so I can not say anything good or bad, given the initial low price.
In the screen menu settings, a standard function for adjusting the color gamut, brightness is available, and even there is a night mode and a reading mode.
As practice has shown, brightness will be sufficient even during use in sunny weather. Of course, the screen quality is quite high and I like the availability of full Full HD resolution.
The backside of the smartphone is made of corrugated matte plastic by which you can distinguish Redmi 9 from other brothers. The design of the camera is a bit like the Redmi K30 with the same round outline around the main camera.
The main camera combines quad modules, there is also an LED flash and a fingerprint scanner. I can’t say anything negative about the operation of the fingerprint scanner since it works quickly and clearly.
On the upper edge of the smartphone, there is an additional microphone and an infrared sensor. The lower edge received the main speaker, microphone, Type-C port, and headphone jack.
On the left side of the case, there is a full-fledged slot for dual nano-SIM cards and a memory card. The right side has a volume rocker and a power button.
The dimensions of the smartphone are 163.3 x 77 x 9.1 mm and weigh about 198 grams. In the hand, the smartphone lies well and thanks to the ribbed back cover, it just does not slip out of the hands.
The build quality is at a high level, I did not find any creaks and all the buttons are pressed with good responsiveness. Well, if everything is fine with the design, but let’s check what the smartphone is capable of in practice.
Performance and Software
Redmi 9 received a completely new processor from MediaTek called Helio G80. It runs on 12-nanometer technology and has eight cores. Two Cortex-A75 cores operate at a frequency of 2.0 GHz and six Cortex-A55 cores with a frequency of 1.8 GHz.
In addition, the Helio G80 processor works in conjunction with the Mali-G52 MC2 graphics chipset. In terms of games, the smartphone performed well even in heavy games.
FPS in the game PUBG Mobile is approximately 30 frames per second, but there are also subsidence up to 24 frames per second.
If you look at the test graphs below, then I can definitely say that the performance of the Helio G80 processor is quite high, as for its price.
Redmi 9 received 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal memory. Also, the device has a younger configuration with 3 and 32 GB of memory. The read speed was about 290 Mbps, and the write speed was 117 Mbps.
I have a Redmi 9 test with global firmware, so there are no problems with the operating system. The smartphone received the tenth version of Android, which is controlled by the user interface of MIUI 12.
Smartphone control is typical like most other devices from Redmi. But I want to note that the user interface works smartly and opens even complex applications quickly.
Another important point to note is the availability of wireless. Redmi 9 received Bluetooth 5.0 version, GPS support, and the most important thing on board is the NFC module. I was pleasantly surprised that even in the budget smartphone for $130, there is a contactless payment module.
Currently, you will not be surprised at the presence of quad modules in the main camera. Even the budget smartphone Redmi 9 has quad-camera modules. The main module is 13 megapixels, which shows a good result in the daytime and even in the dark.
The second 8-megapixel module is an ultra-wide sensor with a capture angle of 118 degrees. The quality of the photos is not the best, but for its price category – good.
The third and fourth modules are 5 and 2 megapixels for macro and bokeh, respectively. I have no strong comments here.
I would like to note that the quality of the main module gets very warm photos with a yellow tint. But photos in ultra-high mode are obtained with a blue tint. Below I will leave a photo album of Redmi 9, where you can find out the results of the pictures for yourself.
Considering that large battery capacity of 5020 mAh is installed inside the Redmi 9 case, one should not expect high battery life.
For example, I conducted a number of standard tests – this video watching on YouTube in 30 minutes was discharged by 7%, and in the game PUBG Mobile – 10% at the maximum brightness level. This is not surprising since it uses a large screen with Full HD resolution, and the processors from MediaTek are not famous for their endurance.
For half an hour, charging through a standard 10W power adapter was about 19%. Although the smartphone has support for fast charging with 18 watts, you will have to buy an adapter separately.
Conclusion and Reviews
Redmi 9 is an almost perfect budget smartphone that has received many useful features and functions.
The first plus for me is the global firmware, which is suitable for all markets, a measure with a wide list of multilingualism. The manufacturer guarantees high support for solving various problems, and during the test, several updates came to me over the air.
High resolution and brightness of the screen will allow you not to worry about your eyesight, but battery life will not be so high.
The quality of the photos is good for its price. Naturally, when compared with more expensive models, for example, Redmi Note 9, then the quality will be higher there, but the price tag will also be higher.
The main advantage for me was the presence of an NFC module. Finally, the manufacturer listened to its customers and decided to install contactless payment in a budget smartphone.
Price and Where to buy cheaper?
Now you can buy and order a Redmi 9 smartphone at a bargain price of $129.99 for version 3 and 32 GB of memory and for $149.99 for version 4/64 GB.
Despite its drawbacks, I believe that the smartphone will be best sellers on sale with the presence of good specs at an affordable price.
