Realme GT NEO 2 Review: Second Generation Smartphone with Snapdragon 870

Less than a couple of months later, Realme introduced the second generation of an almost gaming smartphone called Realme GT NEO 2.

I have already been able to test the first generation of GT NEO smartphones. As for the second generation, is the new model worth your attention? Let’s talk about all the nuances and advantages in this detailed review.

If we talk about cost, then the price tag for the new generation of the Realme GT NEO 2 device has become much higher than for the first generation. That is, now you can buy a smartphone for $398. Whereas the first generation will cost you $310.

The major change in the second generation was the processor. Now the smartphone from Realme is controlled by the Qualcomm brand chipset, namely the Snapdragon 870 with 5G support. Also, the device received a slightly increased screen size, which was 6.62 inches instead of 6.43 inches. The AMOLED screen and matrix remain the same.

But the camera has not received much change when comparing the two generations of smartphones. That is, it uses a 64-megapixel main module. But now the capacity of the built-in battery has increased and now it is 5000mAh with fast charging at 65W.

Well, according to the technical features, you can understand that the second generation of the smartphone has received a number of significant changes and let’s talk about them in more detail. Thus, I suggest starting my in-depth and detailed testing with unboxing and appearance.

Unboxing and packaging

Like the first generation, the updated version of the Realme GT NEO 2 smartphone also comes in a rather large package compared to its competitors from the Redmi or Xiaomi brands.

In addition, the style and appearance of the packaging remained unchanged. This is the same rectangular elongated box, which was made in black. On the front of the package, there was a designation of the brand name and model.

In the meantime, after unboxing, I found the following components, such as various documentation and the smartphone itself in a protective transport film. In addition, the device also received a protective silicone case made of gray material, pleasant to the touch. The package also included a 65W power adapter, a charging cable and a needle for a SIM tray.

In general, the equipment was typical, like most devices. But here I liked the presence of a fast charging adapter and a high-quality silicone case. Okay, now let’s talk about the build and other design features of the new generation of the smartphone.

Design, build quality and materials

Compared to the first generation of the Realme GT NEO device, the second generation has grown in size and weight. For example, now the smartphone has received the following parameters: 162.9 x 75.8 x 9 mm, and the weight is 200 grams. As you may remember from the previous review, I really liked the ergonomics of the GT NEO model. But the updated version of the device does not look as compact as I would like it to be.

As for the build quality, the smartphone has no extraneous and unnecessary sounds. In addition, all the components were connected to each other correctly and without any questions. But there is no protection from water and dust here, so it is better to use the device in a humid environment with caution.

The back of the smartphone feels like a protective glass. In this case, the side frame of the smartphone was made of matte plastic. In general, the materials used are not all that bad. But I would not recommend using the device without a protective case. Since the smartphone is quite slippery and it can easily fall out of your hands.

There are several different color options available to choose from – these are bright green with black stripes, blue and black. If the first color is more playful, then the rest of the options have a strict but aesthetic appearance. I think each user, depending on age and preference, will be able to choose the color that suits them.

In addition, on the back of the device, Realme GT NEO 2 received an island of three main camera modules with an LED flash. In addition, I note that the island itself was not particularly bulging compared to the main body. You may also notice that the edges of the smartphone were slightly rounded and this only had a positive effect during testing.

If we talk about controls, then on the right side of the Realme GT NEO 2 smartphone, there is only one power button. But on the opposite side, there is a volume rocker. At the same time, an additional microphone was installed on the upper edge of the device. On the bottom, there is a slot for dual nano SIM cards, a Type-C connector for charging, a microphone and a main speaker. An additional speaker was used as a spoken speaker and therefore the device had stereo sound.

As for the sound quality, I liked it. There was a fairly decent headroom in terms of volume and even a little bass was present. But you won’t find a headphone port here and it’s a little frustrating.

Can you also ask me about the fingerprint scanner? So, it was located under the screen of the GT NEO 2 smartphone. I had no particular complaints about its performance. Since it worked quite quickly and, most importantly, for sure.

Screen and image quality

I already mentioned at the beginning of the review that compared to the first generation, the Realme GT NEO 2 has grown in screen size from 6.43 to 6.62 inches. At the same time, the resolution and other features remained unaffected. For example, it uses Full HD + resolution or 1080 x 2400 pixels. The aspect ratio was 20: 9 and the pixel density was within 398 PPI.

I always like AMOLED matrices for their high-quality color reproduction and high contrast ratio. That is, blacks were very saturated, while other colors conveyed realistic and vivid hues. In addition, with the use of an AMOLED matrix, you have a useful feature such as Always-On Display.

Other features include a 120 Hz refresh rate with a 600 Hz touch refresh rate. At the same time, using the smartphone was a pleasure, as the operation of the touch panel was precise and very fast. The screen peaked at 1,300 nits, so outdoor readability shouldn’t be an issue.

I can also attribute to the merit the presence of the HDR 10+ function and the minimum amount of PWM up to 20% over the entire range of the screen brightness value. And the disadvantage is the rather wide value of the screen frames and a large round cutout for the front camera. Of course, in the settings you will be able to use modes such as night, reading, use a dark theme, and more.

Performance, benchmarks, games and OS

The updated Snapdragon 870 processor is responsible for the performance of the second generation of the Realme GT NEO 2 smartphone. This is probably the best solution considering the performance and cost of the device.

This chipset was built using 7 nanometer technology and had eight cores. For example, one core was for heavy tasks with a clock frequency of 3.2 GHz, three cores for an average load with a frequency of 2.42 GHz, and the other four cores were energy efficient at a frequency of 1.8 GHz.

If we talk about benchmark tests, the device scored about 718 thousand points in AnTuTu. This is a very solid result for the cost of the device. Below I will leave other test results, so you can compare them with other devices.

At the same time, the Adreno 650 graphics chipset is responsible for the gameplay. It showed itself on the positive side, since I easily managed to test the device in all heavy games. For example, I’ve run games like PUBG Mobile, Call Of Duty, Genshin Impact, and others. I did not find any particular complaints during the gaming session. I also liked that the device didn’t get too hot. That is, the body of the smartphone was up to 40 degrees and this makes me very happy.

In terms of the amount of memory, not everything is so bad here either. Since the smartphone has a minimum amount of memory of 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal memory. There are also versions with 8 or 12 GB of RAM and 128 or 256 GB of internal memory. The read and write speed was very high, because the device uses the UFS 3.1 format.

The wireless connection also did not disappoint, all modules worked properly and did not cause any special complaints about their work. For example, on board the Realme GT NEO 2 smartphone, you can find a 6-generation dual-band Wi-Fi module, Bluetooth 5.1 version, GPS and even had an NFC module for contactless payments.

Now about the user interface, Realme UI 2.0, which is familiar to me, is used here, which is controlled under the Android 11 operating system. In general, the operation of the operating system caused only positive emotions in me. Perhaps this is due to the very fast operation of the touch panel with a 600 Hz refresh rate. That is, all the processes took place very quickly and smoothly, which may not please my eye.

Camera and sample photos

But the camera performance of the new generation of the Realme GT NEO 2 smartphone remains the same as in the first generation of the smartphone. For example, a 64-megapixel module from Samsung Bright S5KGW1 is used here. There is also an 8-megapixel wide-angle module and a 2-megapixel macro sensor.

Realme GT NEO 2 Review: Second Generation Smartphone with Snapdragon 870

At the same time, a 16-megapixel Sony IMX471 sensor is located on the front of the case. In general, the quality of the photos remained unchanged. But then I noticed that at night the photos were slightly better than the first generation. I think this is due to the use of a processor from Qualcomm instead of MediaTek.

As usual, you can find examples of photos in the album below. The camera app has received many useful modes, including wide angle, macro, portrait, photo, video, pro, and more. It shoots a smartphone with a maximum resolution of 1080p and 30 frames per second and optical stabilization was not available, but digital stabilization was.

Battery and run time

The battery in the new model of the Realme GT NEO 2 smartphone has received a slight improvement compared to the previous generation. That is, the battery capacity has grown and now it is 5000 mAh. Let me remind you that the last generation had a 4500 mAh battery.

Realme GT NEO 2 Review: Second Generation Smartphone with Snapdragon 870

In real life, such an increase showed an increase of 1-1.5 hours on the screen. That is, the device can work without any problems for up to 1.5 days with active use. For example, in games, the device was discharged in 1 hour by 15%, while watching a video on YouTube by 10%.

I also liked the fast charging feature using the 65W power adapter. During practice, the smartphone was charged from 0 to 100% in 45 minutes and this is very fast. But wireless charging on board the smartphone was not provided.

Conclusion, reviews, pros and cons

Realme is positioning the GT NEO 2 smartphone model as a gaming device. But is it really so? Let’s find out.

Realme GT NEO 2 Review: Second Generation Smartphone with Snapdragon 870

If we talk about the appearance, the device has a choice of both conventional color options and a bright green color with black stripes. But here I have not identified any triggers that would be useful in games.

But the performance thanks to the Snapdragon 870 processor also proved to be worthy. I could easily play modern games and, at the same time, I did not observe any particular overheating of the device.

Realme GT NEO 2 Review: Second Generation Smartphone with Snapdragon 870

The camera is also quite good, although I did not find much improvement in comparison with the previous generation of the model. But the battery life has increased slightly due to the increased capacity of the built-in battery up to 5000 mAh. I also liked the 65W fast charging feature.

Of the minuses, I can single out this lack of a memory card slot and a headphone jack. Also, the RAM received the LPDDR4X format, not LPDDR5. And the main camera module does not have optical stabilization, but only digital stabilization.

Price and where to buy cheaper?

If we talk about the price tag, then at the moment you can buy the second generation of the Realme GT NEO 2 smartphone at a bargain price of $398.99 for the most basic configuration. At the same time, the version with memory of 8 and 128 GB will cost you $429.98.

Considering its features and cost, I can recommend this smartphone model for purchase. This is a versatile option that is suitable for both everyday tasks and games.
