Recently, Realme introduced a flagship smartphone called Realme X50 Pro 5G, which received very interesting features and specifications. But today we will talk about a budget middle-class smartphone – Realme 5i.
Naturally, I will talk about all aspects of use, advantages, and disadvantages. In addition, in conclusion, you will find out whether the smartphone is worth the money or not, and what are the main competitors for this model.
The price of the Realme 5i is up to about $180. The price tag is very similar to the Umidigi and Redmi models that we tested recently. Would you be interested to know the difference between the models, if you have not read our reviews, then the link to the reviews is here.
The new Realme 5i smartphone is interesting with such features as a large 6.5-inch screen, Snapdragon 665 chipset, good battery life of 5000 mAh and much more.
Whether the new budget smartphone from Realme is winning, let’s find out!

Realme 5i: Unboxing
The device comes in a bright yellow box with the name of the model and company on the front. The backside of the box received the main features of the smartphone.
Inside the box, I found an envelope with documentation and a needle for SIM cards. Usually, in such an envelope there is a protective silicone case, but not in this case. Below I found the smartphone itself in a protective plastic bag, also a power adapter and a Micro USB cable.
Of course, the box looks very bright, but the equipment wants to be the best. For example, I did not find a protective case and Type-C cable for charging. Has the manufacturer really decided to save a few dollars on the consumer?
Realme 5i: Design
To call the Realme 5i smartphone unique. The design looks like in 2019, but not like in 2020.
For example, the front of the device has a large 6.5-inch screen with a waterdrop notch for the front camera. The screen size is really large, but the resolution is rather weak – 1600 x 720 pixels.
The frames around the screen are small, which already pleases me. The aspect ratio is 20: 9 and it’s convenient to hold in your hand. Although it is impossible to use one hand with such a screen, only two. The pixel density per inch was 269 ppi and this result is rather weak.
The brightness in sunny weather is not quite enough, but if you use it indoors, then there will be no problems. The color reproduction has good and rich colors, which is very good for its class of IPS screens.
The back panel is made of plastic. It is very difficult to expect premium materials from the Realme brand. These are not Redmi smartphones. Although I am not a supporter of plastic, as it is much more practical than glass. For example, one of the reasons is that when it falls onto a hard surface, plastic will survive, but glass will not.
Here you can see four modules of the main camera, a flash, and a physical fingerprint scanner. The scanner works pretty fast and accurate, I did not cause problems.
The bottom end of the Realme 5i has a 3.5 mm audio jack, microphone, speaker and Micro USB port. I thank the manufacturer for the headphone jack, but the Micro USB port is trash, even for a mid-range smartphone in 2020.
The right end has one power button, and on the opposite side, there is a volume rocker and a slot for SIM and a memory card. I would like to note that the slot is full-fledged and you will not be limited in choosing a SIM card or memory card.
The build quality of Realme 5i is good and after several days of testing, I did not find extraneous creaks and the buttons are pressed resiliently. After what you see, the look of Realme 5i is much inferior to UMIDIGI Power 3.
Realme 5i: Performance and Software
But the advantage of Realme 5i is the use of a processor from Snapdragon. In this model, the Snapdragon 665 chipset is installed, which has 11-nanometer technology.
Despite the fact that the processor is not new and it has long been introduced, it has good performance. For example, the chipset received eight cores, where 4 Kryo 260 Gold cores of 2.0 GHz and the other 4 Kryo 260 Silver cores with a clock frequency of 1.8 GHz.
Responsible for the graphics is the Adreno 610 GPU. It works perfectly with today’s heavy games. PUBG Mobile and Call Of Duty – will not be a problem on your way, although at medium graphics settings. The heat dissipation is good and after half an hour of playing, I did not notice a strong overheating.
The amount of memory was 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of built-in eMMC format memory. Of course, you can optionally install a memory card up to 256 GB.
Below I will leave a picture with the benchmark results. The Realme 5i model has every chance of good service in terms of performance.
At the time of writing, Realme 5i has an Android 9.0 (Pie) operating system. But the manufacturer guarantees that updates to the Android 10 version will come soon. The user interface typical of Realme models is ColorOS 6.
I have a global version of the review, so the device has Google services and installed applications. These I can include, such as Play Store, YouTube, Disk and many others. I did not find third-party applications.
Some users may not like the custom shell, as it is very bright. Although, you can change the theme and wallpaper in any case. The software works smartly, has many useful features and settings, which is good news.
The work of wireless networks at the proper level, given its price. For example, Realme 5i is equipped with dual-band WiFi, has Bluetooth 5.0 and a stable GPS signal. For many users, it will be a big disappointment – this is the lack of an NFC module.
Realme 5i: Camera
Despite the number of four modules of the main camera, it is difficult to call it strong.
The main sensor has a 12-megapixel module with f/1.8 aperture, and the second sensor has an 8-megapixel module with f/2.3 aperture for ultra-wide shots. The third and fourth 2-megapixel sensors are for bokeh and macro shooting.
The front camera received 8 megapixels with an f/2.0 aperture.
You can see the quality of the photos below in the album. If you compare the quality with Redmi 8 and Realme 5i, then the difference will be obvious, in favor of the Redmi model.
Although I can’t say that daytime photos are very bad, nighttime photos are much worse and have a larger grain size.
Realme 5i: Battery
At the beginning of the review, I mentioned that the Realme 5i smartphone is equipped with 5000 mAh capacitive batteries.
The test result is quite acceptable and two days of active use, the device will withstand.
Despite the good battery life, the battery charging time through the Micro USB port will be about 3 hours through a 10 W adapter.
Realme 5i: Conclusion and Reviews
The budget mid-range smartphone Realme 5i will be a very difficult choice since most competitors offer much nicer features.
Although, the Realme 5i smartphone has its advantages – good performance, global firmware Android 9.0 and decent battery capacity.
Realme 5i: Price and Where to buy cheaper?
Now you can buy a Realme 5i smartphone for only $179.99 with a 10% discount.
As for 2020, the 5i model from Realme is not enough, but for 2019 it would be an ideal choice.
