Today I have to review a new smartwatch model from the OnePlus brand, which is called the OnePlus Watch.
A few years ago, OnePlus was producing low-cost smartphones with very attractive technical features. Currently, OnePlus’ mobile pricing far outstrips most of its main competitors. For example, when compared with the brands Xiaomi or Realme.
But perhaps in the smartwatch category, OnePlus could surprise its old fans with a very attractive price tag? Well, the answer is no. Since the price tag on the OnePlus Watch is currently quite high at $200.
Considering its rather high cost, let’s take a look at the technical component of smartwatches from the OnePlus brand. The first thing the watch stands out for is its 1.39-inch AMOLED screen. The device also received a steel case with 5 ATM water resistance, 4 GB of internal memory and many useful features.
At first glance, the new smartwatch model OnePlus Watch is very similar to the Amazfit GTR 2. Only the price tag of the Amazfit model is slightly lower than that of the OnePlus brand. Thus, I propose to start my in-depth and detailed review to find out the strengths and weaknesses of the device.
OnePlus Watch: Specifications
|Screen:||1.39 inch AMOLED screen with 454 x 454 pixels|
|Sensor:||Heart-rate monitor, Proximity and Gyroscope sensors, Accelerometer, GPS|
|IP standart:||5ATM + IP68 waterproof|
|Standby time:||up to 14 days|
|Size:||46.4 x 46.4 x 10.9 mm|
Unboxing and packaging
I do not have a global version on the review, but a Chinese one. But I do not think that there will be a strong difference between these models in terms of functionality and appearance.
OnePlus has decided to produce its first smartwatch model in a rather bright red packaging. On the front, there is not a single pattern at all, but only the company logo and the name of the smartwatch model. But the back of the package received a sticker with the main technical characteristics.
Inside the box itself, I was able to find, directly, the smartwatch itself with a silicone strap. The smartwatches were full length, by the way, like most other premium brands. The package also includes various documentation with a warranty and a magnetic charging dock.
In general, the package looks very good and I found no problems with the quality of the box. Yes, and in general, given its cost, there should not be another. But now let’s find out from what materials the watch is assembled and its design features.
Design, build quality and materials
As you might have guessed in my review, the standard version of the OnePlus Watch smartwatch. But the manufacturer also offers a more expensive Fashion Edition. The difference between the two versions is quite significant and let me tell you their main features.
If my watch was made of 316L stainless steel, then the Fashion Edition received a cobalt alloy. There are also differences in the strap, as the standard version has a Viton strap. But the rich version received a leather strap with a butterfly clasp or fluoro rubber.
The strap is 22mm wide and as you can see from the pictures, it is removable. Therefore, problems with the use of any other strap of the same width will not pose any particular problems for the future user.
Here you should only pay attention to the cost, since both versions were assembled perfectly well and I did not find any problems during my testing. At the same time, I want to note that the OnePlus Watch smartwatch received full protection from water under the 5ATM standard. Therefore, you can easily dive under water to a depth of 50 meters.
As for the size and weight, the watch from the OnePlus brand received such dimensions – 46.4 x 46.4 x 10.9 mm. And the weight of the device was 45 grams without the strap and 76 grams with the strap. In general, the watch sat perfectly on the wrist and I did not find any serious problems while wearing it.
A 1.39-inch AMOLED screen with a resolution of 454 x 454 pixels was installed on the front of the smartwatch. At the same time, the pixel density per inch was 326 PPI. It is also worth noting that the screen is protected by ordinary flat glass, which has a slight curvature at the edges. It is also worth noting that the frame around the screen is also present.
In general, I liked the quality of the screen, as the color rendition is at a very high level, as well as the contrast. Viewing angles are quite wide, and the brightness of the screen will allow you to comfortably use the device even in sunny weather.
On the right side of the case, there are two flat mechanical control buttons. There is even a stamped OnePlus logo on the top button.
On control, the top key is responsible for entering the main menu or going backward. But the bottom button is custom and in the settings you can set the necessary function according to your preferences. Initially, the bottom button opens sports training.
The back of the OnePlus Watch is made of matte plastic. Here you can find an optical heart rate sensor, charging and data contacts and a speaker hole. There is also a microphone hole at the bottom of the watch frame. Okay, now let’s find out the main features and functions of the new smartwatch model from the OnePlus brand.
Functions, features and settings of the mobile application
The home screen of the OnePlus Watch smartwatch has received a large number of different types of watch faces. To change the style of the watch face, you need to hold your main finger on the watch screen. Then you get to the menu of various dials. There are regular watch faces and customizable, that is, you can expose the functions that you need most.
Also, smartwatches received a large list of watch faces in the mobile application. I managed to count about 50 different free watch faces. The choice is not the greatest. But I hope there will be more watch faces with updates in the future.
When you swipe down, you are taken to the quick settings section. Here you can find the statuses of the Bluetooth connection, NFC settings and the level of the remaining charge. Six more buttons are located just below. This is the do not disturb mode, adjust the brightness level of the screen, find a smartphone, alarm clock, flashlight and settings of the watch itself.
Okay, let’s go through the watch settings. First on the list of features is headphone connectivity. Next comes the screen and brightness section, sound and vibration, do not disturb mode, function key, password, hand selection, language, and system.
When you swipe up from the main screen, we get to the section of recent notifications. The messages are displayed well and the font is normal, only there are some disadvantages here. For example, with long text, you will not be able to read the full message, but only part of it. Also, emoji are not displayed in messages and this is somehow strange for 2021.
Well, if you swipe to the right of the home screen, you can see useful widgets. In addition, if you hold your finger for a few seconds on one of the available widgets, then you will go to another section where you can install or remove the necessary widgets. It is also worth noting that the widgets themselves are not cyclical, so nothing is provided when swiping to the left.
To go to the main menu with all functions, you must press the top button from the right end. The first from the list of the main menu is activity, workouts, records, quick fitness test, heart rate, SpO2, sleep, stress, breathing, phone, music, weather, alipay, wallet, alarm clock, stopwatch, timer, flashlight, barometer, compass.
Now, let’s talk about some of the features in a little more detail. Well, I’ll start with sports training, the watch has 14 types of training. For example, this is running, walking, swimming, and many other activities. The watch also has a music player section when you activate one of the training workouts. It is also worth noting that the OnePlus Watch has a built-in GPS sensor with four modules – GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, Beidou. Indeed, I had no problems with the operation of the GPS module and everything worked without any particular problems.
The health section also showed more realistic metrics. That is, the heart rate was within normal limits, but the level of oxygen in the blood did not particularly surprise me, since the indicators were plausible.
In the phone section, you can still see three subsections – these are contacts, call dialing history and numbers for dialing the phone. It should be said here that the quality of the speaker is not the loudest, so it will not be very comfortable to talk in a noisy place. But it is also possible to connect headphones to the device and the connection via wireless headphones was very good during my testing.
I also want to pay a little attention to the music player. Unfortunately, you cannot listen to music through the watch speaker, but you can listen to music through wireless headphones. Since the watch has 4 GB of internal memory, you can download a pretty good album of your favorite songs and listen to them while exercising through TWS headphones.
The last thing I should tell you about in this section is the settings and connection of the mobile application. The application is called HeyTap Health, download it via the QR code in the instructions. But through the Play Store, it is not yet available. After installing the application, you will need to add a mobile device. There are two wearable devices available from the list – OnePlus Watch and OnePlus Band.
After a simple connection, a list of such features as activities, steps, distance, calories, heart rate and others will be available in the main menu of the application. In the application settings, you can activate the required notifications from the list of available applications. Also set daily goals for steps and calories, heart rate monitoring, music control and many other functions.
Battery and run time
Another strong point of the OnePlus Watch smartwatch is its battery life. The manufacturer promises up to 14 days of work without recharging, but in fact, with active use, the watch can work for about 8-9 days.
If you use the GPS module on an ongoing basis, then the device can work for about 25 hours. But with the active function of monitoring the level of oxygen in the blood during sleep, the battery life will be about 5 days of use.
The result of battery life is very good, but the charging time was another bonus. The watch has a quick charge function and the device can be charged in 20 minutes up to 7 days of active use.
Conclusion, reviews, pros and cons
OnePlus has presented a very interesting smartwatch model, both in terms of functionality and materials used. But there were some drawbacks, and let’s first tell you what I liked about the new model of smart wearable watches.
The first thing that won me over with the OnePlus Watch model is its very high-quality assembly and materials used. Also, the device received a good and bright AMOLED screen, decent user interface work with good functionality of various features.
That is, I liked the work of phone Bluetooth calls, the function of connecting wireless headphones, music control, built-in memory and many other functions.
But I can attribute to the disadvantages – this is not a completely modified user interface. This proves once again that OnePlus needs a little refinement, both in terms of management and some features. For example, the text of notifications is not displayed in full, as emoji itself is not displayed.
Price and where to buy cheaper?
At the time of writing, the OnePlus Watch is priced at exactly $199 with a 20% discount.
Therefore, I have the main question, is the new model of smartwatches from the OnePlus brand worth your attention or not? The answer is ambiguous, since I would not take this model for constant use for myself. But during the test, I really liked this watch.
