Many of you know the popular company OnePlus, which makes good flagship smartphones. But today we will talk about a slightly different device called OnePlus Buds and these are wireless earbuds.
In this review, I want to tell the truth about sound and build quality, and also share with you the main cons and pros.
The OnePlus White Buds start at $85. This is a rather high price since from a technical point of view, the earbuds are not surprising with anything.
For example, TWS earbuds received a 13.4 mm dynamic driver, intelligent touch control with automatic auto-pause, and IPX4 water protection.
That is, I can find many similar earbuds, like the OnePlus Buds, only they will be several times cheaper. But let’s find out how the earbuds will behave in practice in real life.
OnePlus Buds: Specifications
|Driver unit:||13.4 dynamic driver|
|Bluetooth protocol:||AAC and SBC|
Unboxing and packaging
Of course, the box in which the OnePlus Buds are shipped looks very solid and is made of high-quality thick cardboard. On the front, there is a drawing of earbuds and a charging box, and on the left side, there is a red stripe with the name of the model from the color.
Inside the box, I found – this is the charging box itself with earbuds, a red Type-C charging cable, and instructions.
Since these earbuds are semi-in-ear earbuds, so the silicone ear tips are not included. But the equipment itself looks good and it is clear that it is made of high-quality materials. Also on the site, you can order an additional silicone case for the charging box.
Design, assembly, and materials
The new model of the OnePlus Buds earbuds received a white glossy plastic, which is quite solidly assembled in quality. The plastic itself is easily smeared, but also easy to clean. In general, I have no complaints about the build quality and materials used.
But as for the comfort of wearing, I did not like these earbuds. The earbud case is slightly larger than the Apple AirPods, so wearing even for a short time was problematic for me. You can see from the picture below that the sound tube is much wider than the AirPods.
And this is one of the main problems with the OnePlus Buds model.
If we talk about weight, then one earbud weighs approximately 4.7 grams. That’s not as much as it is for modern wireless semi-in-ear earbuds. But due to the bulging size of the case, wearing the new Buds is not at all comfortable.
Let’s go over the appearance a bit. On the front outer part, there is a touch control panel with LED indicator.
At the bottom of the leg, there is a hole for a microphone and contacts for charging. It is also worth noting that the earbuds received three microphones in each earbud, where the other two are located on the side end and just above the touch control panel.
There is an infrared ear detection sensor on the sound guide. It automatically stops playback when one of the earbuds pops out of your ear.
Yes, the manufacturer has added IPX4 water protection, which is quite modest. It is able to protect the device from sweat and light rain.
The charging box itself is already made of matte white plastic. It is well built and weighs around 37 grams, without earbuds.
Indeed, the build quality is pretty good. For example, the lid opens without any backlash and it is comfortable to take the earbuds out of the case with one hand.
There is an LED indicator of the charge level on the front of the box. There is a pairing button on the back of the case, and a Type-C port for charging is installed at the bottom.
Well, I figured out the appearance and I can say that the build quality and materials are at a high level. But the main problem was the convex size, which does not allow using the earbuds with comfort.
Connection, delay, and control
OnePlus Buds got Bluetooth wireless connectivity with version 5.0. The device uses such codecs as AAC and SBC, but there is no modern aptX codec on board.
I have connected OnePlus Buds to several devices and have had no connection problems. The signal quality was always at a high level and without any interference. The same goes for latency. The earbuds worked without a single delay at all, both while watching videos on Youtube and while playing games.
But the touch controls disappointed me a little. Yes, it is managed clearly and without any problems, but the functionality is rather primitive. In the case of OnePlus Buds, you will only be able to control tracks forward and backward, stop or play music, and call the voice assistant. I would also like to have a volume control function that is not here.
Sound and microphone quality
As I mentioned at the beginning of this article, the OnePlus Buds use a dynamic 13.4mm driver. Despite its large size, the sound quality falls short of its competitors.
The new OnePlus Buds sounds very flat and even with the maximum low frequencies set in the application in the equalizer, I did not find any bass.
At maximum volume, the earbuds also sound lackluster. At the same time, the sound is a little wheezing, but there is no white noise in both budget copies of AirPods.
I can name several pairs of wireless earbuds that sound much more interesting and even cheaper. For example, these are Xiaomi QCY T8, OPPO Enco Free, SOUNDPEATS Truebuds, FIIL CC, and realme Buds Air.
The quality of the microphone is quite good, the noise reduction works well and even in noisy places the interlocutor will hear you clearly.
Battery life and charging time
Each earbud has a 35 mAh battery capacity and, as the manufacturer says, at 60% volume, they can play for about 7 hours.
My practice showed a slightly different result and at a 70% volume level, the earbuds lost about 5 hours. The total battery life with the charging box will be up to 28 hours.
Fast charging is present and in 10 minutes of charging you can play about 2 hours of music. A full charge will take you up to 1.5 hours.
Conclusion, reviews, pros, and cons
The OnePlus Buds are the only wireless earbuds I haven’t received any positive effect after.
Yes, if the price tag was around $30, I wouldn’t say anything bad, but the price is much higher.
Yes, the build quality, materials used, and battery life is pretty good. But the most important aspects, such as wearability, sound quality, and control functionality, are quite low in power.
Price and where to buy cheaper?
Already, you can purchase OnePlus Buds TWS earbuds for $86.99 and a 20% discount. But I cannot recommend these earbuds for purchase, since they have many negative sides and, most importantly, overpriced.
Below I will leave a list of wireless earbuds that will sound interesting and much cheaper in price.
