For 2020, Nokia has introduced not so many new models of smartphones. Today I have a long-awaited mid-range smartphone called Nokia 5.3.
The new device was introduced in March 2020 with a budget smartphone Nokia 1.3. Today we will talk about the Nokia 5.3 model and, as usual, I will try to share with you my impressions, as well as the main advantages and disadvantages.
I was always interested in the Finnish company HMD Global, but the prices for their devices were always overpriced. Although the new model Nokia 5.3 received a pretty tempting price tag and a smartphone will cost you about $245.98.
Even if you look at the specification, the new model of the smartphone received a rather interesting spec. For example, here you can find a large 6.55-inch screen, a clean Android One with the tenth version, a powerful Snapdragon 665 processor, the main quad camera with a good 4000 mAh battery capacity, and an NFC module.
What should be expected from HMD Global this year and how will the new middle-class smartphone behave in real life? Let’s find out all the details in a full review.

This year, new smartphone models received a slightly different box design. If you recall past models had a typical handshake pattern.
Now on the front of the box is a drawing of a smartphone and you can also notice the name of the model. The backside of the box received a table with the main technical specs.
Inside the box, I was met by a smartphone itself in a protective plastic bag. In the lower section of the box, there is a large number of different documentation, Type-C cable, 10W power adapter, and wired headphones.
For complete happiness, there is not enough protective silicone case, although Nokia has never supplied them in a kit.
To be honest, I would rather get a protective case, instead of cheap disposable headphones. The rest of the equipment is standard and there is everything you need for full use.
Naturally, in the average price budget, it will be quite difficult to find a smartphone with premium materials such as glass. Therefore, it is not surprising that the body of the Nokia 5.3 smartphone is made of matte plastic.
If you look at the dimensions of the device, which amounted to 164.3 x 76.6 x 8.5 mm and weight 185 grams, then the 5.3 model is pretty good in the hand. Although due to the large size of the screen using one hand will be problematic.
A 6.55-inch IPS screen with a resolution of 720 x 1600 pixels was installed on the front side. With this size and resolution, the pixel density was only 268 PPI.
It is worth noting that even with such a small resolution, individual pixels are not visible and it will be comfortable to use the device for everyday use.
But I can note a slight minus of the screen – this is that it is not so saturated and contrasting. But there is a good brightness of 450 nits, which will be enough even in bright sunny weather.
In addition, the screen is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3 and has an aspect ratio of 20: 9 with a screen-to-body ratio of about 82.3%. At the top of the screen, there is a waterdrop notch for the front camera.
The back panel received a typical round-shaped design of the main camera, where an LED flash was installed in the center, and around it was four camera modules. Just below the camera, there is a round of fingerprint scanner. The scanner works quite quickly and accurately.
On the bottom, there is a speaker, microphone, and Type-C port, and on top, there is a 3.5 mm audio jack with an additional microphone.
The right side of the Nokia 5.3 received a standard volume rocker and a power button with an event indicator. But on the opposite side, there is another button for activating the voice assistant and a slot for dual nano-SIM cards and a memory card.
Despite the fact that the new Nokia 5.3 smartphone did not receive premium materials, the design and brand awareness remained the same.
The build quality is at a high level and did not find any flaws in the assembly.
Performance and Software
Also, I can’t say anything bad about performance, as Nokia 5.3 got a good Snapdragon 665 processor. It was introduced back in early 2019, but even now its performance is pretty good.
The chipset uses 11-nanometer technology with eight cores, where four Kryo 260 Gold with a clock frequency of 2.0 GHz, and the other four are GHz Kryo 260 Silver with a frequency of 1.8 GHz.
If we talk about games, then the smartphone showed itself well. Even heavy games are launched, such as Asphalt 9 or PUBG Mobile, but at medium graphics settings. In addition, even after 1 hour of playing, Nokia 5.3 did not feel much overheating, which is very good.
Inside the smartphone uses 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal memory. There is also a separate slot for a microSDXC memory card.
Below I will leave my tests of various benchmarks, where you can compare the results with other smartphones.
In terms of the software, Nokia 5.3 is doing great. Now a stock version of Android One with 10 versions is used. The manufacturer guarantees a 3-year warranty on updates, and so in the near future, you can expect an update to Android 11.
The user interface looks standard for pure Android One. The smartphone works quite quickly and opens any application without any delay.
Another bonus for me was the availability of an NFC module for contactless payment. It works with Google services and I did not find any shortcomings in its work.
It is worth noting that there is a wireless Wi-Fi connection 802.11 b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.2, and fast navigation thanks to A-GPS, GLONASS, and BDS sensors.
The Nokia 5.3 main camera includes four different models – this is a 13-megapixel resolution with f/1.8 aperture for main photos.
As practice has shown, the photos on the main module are pretty good in the daytime. If we talk about the poor lighting, then the quality drops sharply for the worse.
The second module has a 5-megapixel resolution for ultra-wide shots. Based on the examples below, the quality of the ultra-wide mode wants to be better.
The third and fourth modules have a 2-megapixel resolution for bokeh and macro shots. Both sensors work well and without strong complaints.
The front camera takes photos thanks to the 8-megapixel module and the quality is similar to the main camera.
Below I will leave an album with sample photos. I also note from myself that the quality of the photos as for $180 the device does not hold out at all.
If the camera of the new Nokia 5.3 smartphone was a little disappointing, then the battery life will be a positive moment for many users.
Inside the smartphone, a 4000 mAh battery capacity is installed, which is able to work for about 1.5 days with active use. In addition, thanks to the HD screen and the energy-saving processor from Snapdragon, so the power consumption will be minor.
There is also a negative side to the coin since the device comes with a 10W power adapter and the charging time will take about 3 hours. By everyday standards, this is quite a long time.
Conclusion and Reviews
Nokia 5.3 is undoubtedly an interesting smartphone that has received a wide list of positive features and specs.
I want to note that I am glad to see here a good processor from Snapdragon, and not from MediaTek. Therefore, in terms of productivity and speed of work, I have no complaints at all. Using pure Android One still gives a big plus to buying this device.
Design and build quality, screen, battery life, and even the presence of NFC – are positive moments when choosing a new smartphone.
What I did not like was the poor quality of the main and front cameras at night, as well as the ultra-wide mode. It can also be noted that an insignificant moment is the slow charging of the battery.
Price and Where to buy cheaper?
The new Nokia 5.3 smartphone from the Finnish company HMD Global can already be purchased at an attractive price of $245.98.
If you are a sincere fan of the Nokia brand, then I can definitely advise you to buy a smartphone. But if not, then there are a large number of other smartphones with more attractive features.
