Motorola has introduced a new budget smartphone called Motorola One Macro and this is the first model from the company that we will test. What should we expect from a pretty old Motorola brand, you can read my opinion in a quick review.
According to the manufacturer, the new model One Macro is a state employee, but the price of the device is over $220. Therefore, I can’t say that this is a full-fledged budget device, but most likely it can be attributed to the middle class of smartphones.
If you look at the technical specs, the first thing that can be highlighted is a 6.2-inch HD screen, an Helio P70 processor, 4/64 GB of memory, a 4000 mAh battery and others. From the name, the manufacturer allocates a macro camera, but it is with a resolution of 2 megapixels, as well as smartphones from Redmi.
Given my technical features, I can’t say that the device has great potential since the specifications are very weak and the price is quite high.

Motorola One Macro: Design
I can’t say that the appearance of the One Macro model is very bad, but it is typical for the 2019 range. I did not see any interesting and proprietary solutions in the design, but maybe this is for the better, since innovations may not reach all users.
On the front panel is a 6.2-inch screen with a waterdrop notch for the front camera. The resolution with HD or 720 x 1520 pixels is not the best, but in practice, this figure is enough for everyday tasks.
Individual pixels are not visible unless you look very closely. The advantage of a small resolution is small energy consumption, which, of course, will be a plus in battery life. The pixel density per inch was about 270 ppi and an aspect ratio of 19: 9.
As for technology, you should not expect to see the AMOLED matrix, but please always welcome the standard IPS matrix. I can’t say that the quality of the colors is very poor when compared with competitors, then the quality of colors and contrast is no worse than on Redmi, Honor models.
The frames around the screen are quite large, especially at the top and bottom. As for me, this is a significant minus, the device looks a bit awkward.
The back panel received a full-fledged plastic case, which has both positive and negative sides. Naturally, it is difficult to determine glass from plastic if you do not hold a smartphone in your hands.
Of the minuses – the plastic is glossy and it is very easily soiled, so fingerprints will be very visible. In terms of wear resistance, plastic is not as wear-resistant to scratches, such as metal or protective glass.
Pluses are also inherent in plastic, for example, plastic is much lighter than glass or metal, so wearing a smartphone is simpler and easier. Also, the plastic is much smoother and if you drop the device on a hard surface, the plastic will remain intact, but the glass will break.
As I said, the manufacturer of Motorola focused on the macro camera and allocated the module separately from the rest of the sensors. The location of the sensors of the main camera on the upper left corner of the rear panel.
A fingerprint scanner was also installed on the back of the device under the logo of the letter M. I want to note that the scanner works quickly and without any problems. Another bonus is the presence of face recognition of the device owner through the front camera. This function does not work so fast and it all depends on the quality of lighting.
The power button has a special pattern that stands out from the volume control swing. The location of the two keys is standard on the right side of the smartphone.
On the opposite side, there is a hybrid slot for dual nano-SIM cards or one nano-SIM card and memory card.
The lower part received the main speaker, Type-C port and microphone. Above is a 3.5 mm audio jack and an optional noise-canceling microphone.
I have no complaints about the interface and I think many users, including myself, will be glad to have a headphone jack.
The build quality is high despite plastic. All elements were assembled without special remarks and I did not find any creaks or extraneous sounds.
Motorola One Macro: Performance and Software
Using a Mediatek processor is not the best choice. In the case of the Motorola One Macro, the device was equipped with a chip called Helio P70, which is built on 12-nanometer technology. The processor is based on four Cortex-A73 cores with a frequency of 2.0 GHz and four additional Cortex-A53 cores with a clock frequency of also 2.0 GHz.
For the graphics in games, the Mali-G72 MP3 processor is responsible, which proved to be satisfactory in testing games. For example, the PUBG Mobile device worked without any problems, but after prolonged heavy loads, One Macro got quite a warm heat.
I have no problems with memory since the smartphone has 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal memory. In addition, you can use an additional memory card up to 512GB, but instead of the second SIM card slot.
Synthetic performance tests showed good results, but slightly worse than Snapdragon processors.
The software, although not the latest version, but One Macro uses Android 9.0 with an almost clean user interface.
Indeed, the interface is very similar to Android One, but it has some installed programs from Motorola. In general, the operation of the software is very smooth and fast.
I hope that the company will soon upgrade the system to version 10, as it has a good reputation in the mobile device market.
Of the minuses, I can note the lack of contactless payment NFC. Personally for me and I think for many users this feature will be missed.
Motorola One Macro: Camera
Besides the fact that the macro sensor was separated from the main camera module, I did not find other main differences between competitors. The main sensor at Motorola One Macro is a 13-megapixel camera with an f/2.0 aperture. The second and third sensors have a resolution of 2 megapixels with f/2.2 aperture, only one for macro photography and the other for bokeh.
The front camera, which is located under the waterdrop notch on the front panel, received an 8-megapixel module with an f/2.2 aperture.
As you can see, according to the specifications, the camera cannot stand out from its Chinese competitors, for example, Redmi Note 8 and other models.
The camera application has a large number of functions and options, and some of them have received a direct emphasis on macro photography.
But the quality of photos in macro mode, I did not particularly notice, is a big difference with the same main competitors from Redmi or Honor.
Below you can see an album of sample photos taken on the Motorola One Macro in various conditions.
Motorola One Macro: Battery
In battery life, the One Macro model surprised me well, as it received a 4000 mAh capacitive battery.
During the testing of the smartphone, it approximately finalized until the end of the second day and this is with almost active use.
The low power consumption due to HD resolution, allowed to achieve a good result in battery life.
The charging time via 10 watts of the power adapter was approximately 2.5 hours. Well, this is not the most pleasant and fastest indicator in the modern market.
Motorola One Macro: Conclusions and Reviews
Would I buy a Motorola One Macro smartphone? Honestly, no, because its price is much higher than for its competitors and has a much worse technical stuffing.
Even if we consider devices such as the Nokia 7.2, then I would prefer the Nokia brand instead of Motorola.
By cons, I can include – this is a typical design with a plastic case, a camera with a small resolution of only 13 megapixels, a screen with HD resolution. Yes, and the MediaTek processor does not cause me positive emotions. The quality of photos at night is not the best, macro photography does not stand out from competitors and video shooting has only Full HD resolution.
Pluses are also inherent, but there are not as many as we would like, for example, fast operation of the software with an almost clean user interface that resembles Android One. In the daytime, the photos have good detail and natural colors, and the battery life of up to 2 days with an average use mode pleased me.
Motorola One Macro: Price and Where to buy cheaper?
Currently, the smartphone is available in local stores and you can buy it starting at a price tag of $220.
For me personally, the price for which I would buy a Motorola One Macro would be $150. Since the technical specification of the device is not the best in the mobile smartphone market.
