Today, on my test, a very interesting smartphone from Motorola, which can become a direct competitor to the last tested smartphone from Nokia. As you might guess from the title of the article, this is the new Motorola G8 Power.
I want to note right away that the Motorola G-Series is a line of mid-range smartphones. The price tag for the new G8 Power smartphone is about $ 220.
Earlier, I tested another Motorola model in the same price range and you can read my impression on the link here.
If we talk about the new G8 Power model, then the device looks much more attractive than the One Macro model. The smartphone was equipped with a 6.4-inch OPS LCD screen, similar to the processor like Nokia 5.3 – Snapdragon 665, the new version of Android 10, the main quad camera, and a large battery capacity of 5000 mAh.
Based on the technical specs, the new Motorola smartphone offers a good combination of price and specifications. But let’s check how the smartphone behaved in real life and begin my full test by unpacking.
Motorola G8 Power: Specifications
|Motorola G8 Power:||Specs|
|Display:||6.4 inches IPS with 1080 x 2300 pixels|
|CPU:||Snapdragon 665 Octa Core 2.0GHz|
|Memory extension:||up to 256GB|
|Cameras:||16MP + 8MP + 8MP + 2MP main camera and 16MP front camera|
|Connectivity:||Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, dual-band,3G, 4G, Bluetooth 5.0 and GPS|
|Dimensions:||156 x 75.8 x 9.6 mm|
The new G8 Power comes standard in a black box. On the front, you can see the brand logo and model name.
The backside received a picture of a smartphone with a quad-camera and some features. For example, this is up to 3 days of battery life, AI main cameras, and the presence of stereo sound from Dolby.
Inside the box, there is a smartphone itself in a protective silicone transparent case. In addition, there is some documentation, a SIM card needle, a Type-C cable, and a power adapter with an output of 18 watts.
There is nothing superfluous in the kit, but I’m certainly glad that there is a silicone case that is already in the kit. If we recall the Nokia 5.3 model, then instead of a cover there were wired budget headphones.
In appearance, the new Motorola G8 Power model is no different from its predecessors, especially when it comes to the rear panel.
The smartphone case is made entirely of plastic and the manufacturer offers two types of colors – it is blue and black. The front part has a protective glass, but I did not find which protection is used.
On the other hand, the smartphone lies well, thanks to smoothly rounded corners. Although using one hand will be problematic, like most other modern smartphones. The dimensions of the G8 Power were 156 x 75.8 x 9.6 mm and weight about 197 grams.
The build quality is at the appropriate level for its price and here I do not have any comments. Despite the fact that the G8 Power model is made of plastic, the smartphone looks quite modern.
Another feature of the new G8 Power model is protection against splashing water and rain. But the device does not have full protection against water, so the smartphone cannot be completely immersed in water.
On the front of the device is a large 6.4-inch screen with a resolution of Full HD + or 1080 x 2300 pixels. The density of pixels per inch was about 399 PPI.
The screen uses the standard IPS LCD matrix technology and, as for an average smartphone, this is a typical solution. AMOLED matrices are much more expensive to manufacture, so the original price would be more expensive.
In general, the brightness of the screen is enough for everyday use, even during bright sunny weather. Also, viewing angles are quite high, as are contrast and color reproduction.
At the top of the screen, there is a hole-punch for the front camera and I was really very glad to see this solution, instead of the typical waterdrop notch.
There is also an additional speaker, it is used for both conversations and stereo sound. The main speaker is located at the bottom and the sound quality is really good for its price range. Loud and surround sound with decent bass – will definitely be provided for you.
Next to the main speaker is a Type-C port and microphone. At the top, there is a 3.5 mm audio jack and an additional microphone.
The volume and power buttons are located on the right side of the Motorola G8 Power, and on the opposite side, there is a hybrid slot for dual SIM cards or a memory card.
Naturally, the rear panel has a vertical main camera, which consists of four modules and a flash. A fingerprint scanner is installed in the central part and in its center, there is a Motorola logo in the form of the letter “M”.
I really liked the look of the new Motorola G8 Power smartphone, which has splash protection, stereo sound, a round cutout for the front camera, and even a 3.5 mm audio jack. Now I want to talk a little about performance and the user interface.
Performance and Software
The smartphone Motorola G8 Power is made with a Snapdragon 665 processor, which shows good results in terms of performance.
Earlier I tested a new smartphone from Nokia with the same processor and the new Motorola model has similar benchmark results.
It uses eight cores, where 4×2.0 GHz Kryo 260 Gold and 4×1.8 GHz Kryo 260 Silver. This processor runs on 11-nanometer technology and is paired with an Adreno 610 GPU.
Inside the smartphone, there are 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal memory. Of course, if there is not enough memory, then you can use the microSDXC memory card slot up to 256 GB.
Compared with other competitors, for example from Xiaomi, this processor is already outdated and competitors offer higher performance.
As for the software, the Motorola G8 Power comes with an almost pure OS, which is built on the basis of Android 10. There are a lot of useful features and options, including smart gestures.
In addition, there is an interesting function called Peek Display, which displays the main functions with the screen off. For example, this time, battery level, new notifications, and others.
In general, the user interface is very smart, it works quickly and even opens complex applications and games quickly.
Speaking of wireless, the G8 Power received Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n and Bluetooth 5.0, and there is also fast navigation due to the built-in A-GPS, GLONASS, BDS and GALILEO modules. Of the minuses, I can note – this is the lack of an NFC module.
As I mentioned, the main camera includes four camera modules, which showed itself on the positive side. The main module received a 16-megapixel resolution with f/1.7 aperture. The quality of the pictures both in the daytime and at night corresponds to its price.
The second module already has an 8-megapixel resolution and is used for ultra-wide shots with a viewing angle of 118 degrees.
The third sensor is similar to the second in terms of resolution and it is designed for two-times optical zoom. The last fourth model with the 2-megapixel resolution is used for macro shots.
The front camera has a 16-megapixel sensor, which shows good image quality.
The G8 Power device is capable of shooting video with a maximum resolution of 4K and 30 frames per second, but stabilization works only with a resolution of 1080p.
Below I will leave an album of photos that were shot on the Motorola G8 Power.
Another main feature of the Motorola G8 Power is its battery life. According to the manufacturer, the new smartphone is able to work up to 3 days, thanks to the built-in 5000 mAh battery.
Undoubtedly, it will be possible to achieve such a result, but you will have to use the device quite rarely. If you use it quite actively, watch movies, play games, and social networks, then it will not be difficult to achieve two days of battery life.
The charging time through a Type-C port and an 18W power adapter will take you about 1 hour and 40 minutes.
Conclusion and Reviews
Motorola G8 Power is an almost perfect smartphone that has received many interesting features and functions.
For example, the appearance received a good combination of high-quality assembly and the presence of stereo sound with protection against splashes, which cannot but rejoice.
The screen quality with Full HD resolution is much better than with HD, and the brightness, color reproduction is quite high for its class.
Naturally, the performance proved to be on the positive side. Benchmark tests turned out to be quite high, and G8 Power got a fast and user interface.
Another nice feature is the pretty good shots and battery life.
From a negative point of view, I can attribute this – the lack of an NFC module and the low resolution of the main camera.
Price and Where to buy cheaper?
Despite the fact that the smartphone Motorola G8 Power received a good mark after several days of testing, but the price remains an important factor. Now buying a smartphone is not a problem and prices for the G8 Power start at $220.
I analyze the situation on the market, then the price tag for the new Motorola smartphone is a little overpriced. If you want to get a little better performance and a better camera, then it is worth considering other options for smartphones from Xiaomi.
