Motorola Edge S Review: Mid-budget smartphone with Snapdragon 870

I think most users, and especially fans of the Motorola brand, know that this company is run by Lenovo. But today I came across a very interesting smartphone model called Motorola Edge S.

I would like to note right away that this smartphone belongs to the mid-budget class, but it has a very good technical stuffing. Therefore, in this article I will tell you about my emotions, advantages and, most importantly, I will share with you disadvantages.

As for the cost, while the smartphone is available in the Chinese market, it will be problematic to buy it in any other country. But I know that the situation will be improved and you will be able to order a smartphone through your favorite Chinese sites such as Aliexpress and others. Note that the basic version with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage will cost you $410.

What do you get for this cost? The first thing that surprised me was the brand new Snapdragon 870 processor. It has support for 5G networks and has control of the Android 11 operating system. Besides, I liked the large 6.7 inches IPS screen with a refresh rate of 90 Hz and an aspect ratio of 21: 9.

The smartphone also received many other interesting features. I can refer to them – this is a 5000mAh battery with a 20W charging adapter. The device also has a decent 64-megapixel main camera and dual front cameras.

Okay, are you interested in a new smartphone model from the Motorola brand? Then let’s get down to an in-depth and complete review and I plan to start with unpacking.

Unboxing and packaging

The Motorola Edge S smartphone comes in a fairly simple and ordinary package. The box itself is made of white cardboard and on its front, you can see only the company logo with the model name.

But inside the package, I first found the smartphone itself, which in turn was already with a silicone transparent protective case. Below there was an envelope with various documentation and a needle for a SIM tray. At the very bottom of the package were a 20W power adapter and a Type-C charging cable.

In general, the package looks pretty good and has everything you need, including a protective silicone case. Now let’s look at the appearance of the new model and find out what materials it is assembled from.

Design, build quality, and materials used

As I mentioned at the beginning of the review, the Motorola Edge S smartphone model belongs to the mid-budget class of devices. Thus, you should not expect premium content. In the case of the Edge S model, the body is made of glossy plastic, both the back and its frames.

The manufacturer offers a choice of two colors – iridescent blue and gray. I have a blue version on my review and as for me, it does not look as impressive as I would like it to be. In any case, I belong to the category of people who prefer matte plastic in their performance.

Despite its inexpensive materials to use, the build quality is pretty good. The case does not emit any extraneous sounds and is quite good in the hand. But here it is worth talking about its unusual dimensions.

The new smartphone from the Motorola brand received a rather elongated body with dimensions of 168.4 x 74 x 9.7 mm, and the device weighs 215 grams. That is, the body height is quite large, but the width of the smartphone fits well in the palm of my hand. Therefore, it will be impossible to use one hand. Although now it is difficult to find a smartphone that will be comfortable to use with one hand, isn’t it?

On the back of the case, there is an iridescent Motorola logo in its central part. And in the upper left corner, there is an island of four cameras with LED flash. But I was very pleased that the camera protrusion is very small. This is when compared with other competitors, whose camera modules protrude quite significantly.

On the side edge on the right side of the case, there is a power button with a built-in fingerprint scanner and just above the volume rocker. I would like to point out that the performance of the fingerprint scanner is quite positive. The device will unlock quickly and most importantly accurately.

Meanwhile, on the opposite side, on the left side, there is a hybrid slot for dual nano-SIM cards or a single nano-SIM card and a microSD memory card. Also here you can find another additional custom button for quick access to one of the user interface applications.

The bottom end of the smartphone received a Type-C connector for charging, a speaker, a microphone hole, and a 3.5 mm audio jack for headphones. On the top edge, there is only one hole for an additional microphone.

Of the shortcomings, I can only attribute the presence of one speaker. But the sound quality of even one speaker is not the worst that I have heard. At the same time, the sound quality was very rich with bass elements and the volume level was quite high.

Display and image quality

The Motorola Edge S has a decent 6.7-inch display with Full HD+ or 1080 x 2520 pixels. As I said, this is not a standard stretched screen with an aspect ratio of 21: 9. But the pixel density here is not bad at about 409 PPI per inch.

As for the bezels around the screen, they are quite significant, and therefore the screen-to-body ratio is only 84.1%. Also in the upper left corner, you can see a double round cutout for the selfie camera.

A nice feature in the screen is the presence of a 90 Hz refresh rate. Yes, the screen may not be as smooth as competitors with 120Hz screens, but even 90Hz will be enough for everyday use in most cases.

I also liked the transmitted colors, they are really saturated and bright, despite the fact that this is an IPS screen. But in the screen settings, you can find interesting features, for example, the similarity of the Alway-On Display function. That is, when you pick up the device, the screen will show you key information such as time, notifications, and more.

Performance, benchmarks tests, games, and OS

The all-new Snapdragon 870 processor was first used on the Motorola Edge S. It is a 7nm chipset that runs on eight cores. Let’s go through the features of each core. Onboard there is one Kryo 585 core with a clock speed of 3.2 GHz, three Kryo 585 cores with 2.42 GHz, and four more energy-saving Kryo 585 cores with 1.80 GHz.

The new Snapdragon 870 chipset sits between the Snapdragon 865 Plus and the 885. Therefore, the performance of the new processor on the Edge S model will be enough for even the most demanding tasks. For example, in the AnTuTu test, the device scored about 630 thousand points. I will also leave an album with the results of various benchmark tests of the Motorola Edge S.

The Adreno 650 GPU performs very well in gaming tests. I was able to play a lot of heavy games, including Genshin Impact, and the average FPS was around 60 frames per second. The smartphone ran other games without any problems at all. But after spending a lot of time in games, the smartphone was warm all over the back of the case.

Besides, I had no problems with the amount of memory. The Edge S smartphone model received 6 or 8 GB of LPDDR5 RAM. Also, onboard the smartphone has 128 or 256 GB of memory in UFS 3.1 format.

Wirelessly, you will definitely not have any problems, since the device received the latest generation of Wi-Fi 6, support for fast Bluetooth 5.2 with a GPS module. In addition, the Edge S smartphone has a built-in NFC module for contactless payments. And also there are all communication bands for the international market with support for 5G networks.

Onboard the new smartphone from Motorola, the latest version of the Android 11 operating system was installed under the MY UI proprietary shell. I can note that the user interface is very close to the stock one and there are no extraneous applications or programs here. Also, the icons look harmonious and in general, the user interface itself works smartly and without any problems.

Initially, out of the box, the Edge S smartphone received built-in Google apps and services. Apart from that, I liked a lot of interesting features, for example, this is heart rate tracking. After several measurements, I was completely satisfied with the result, as the readings were exactly the same as my Galaxy Active 2.

Camera and sample photos

I can’t call the new Motorola Edge S a camera phone, but the manufacturer has done everything possible to make your shots pretty high quality. The main sensor received a resolution of 64 megapixels and this is a module called Omnivision OV64B with an aperture of f/1.7. At the same time, the quality of the photos is very good, even at night.

The second module is for ultra-wide shots and has a resolution of 16 megapixels. The third sensor is for portrait mode and has a 2-megapixel resolution. The last fourth module is the TOF 3D sensor.

On the front, there are two more camera modules. The main sensor has received a 16-megapixel resolution and an additional 8-megapixel resolution for ultra-wide shots.

The camera application has many interesting settings and features. You can also choose between different operating modes, both manual and automatic. In addition, I liked how the main camera shoots video at 6K resolution and 30 frames per second. But the selfie camera is capable of shooting video at 1080p and also 30 frames per second. Below you can see sample photos taken on Motorola Edge S.

Battery and run time

Like most smartphones in the mobile market, the new Motorola Edge S smartphone has a pretty decent 5000mAh battery capacity. At the same time, the battery life was very good.

If you use a smartphone as an everyday device, that is, play a little game, watch videos on YouTube, listen to music, or even read the news on social networks, then the battery life will be up to 2 working days.

At the same time, the full charging time will take you about 2.5 hours, since fast charging is available, but only at 20 watts.

Conclusion, reviews, pros, and cons

As I said, the new Motorola Edge S smartphone can most likely be classified as a mid-budget device, but with very high performance.

Therefore, one of the most important features in the Edge S model is performance thanks to the all-new Snapdragon 870 processor. This chipset first started life with a model from Motorola and I have nothing negative to say about its performance.

I also liked the quality of the screen with a refresh rate of 90 Hz with support for many other features. In addition, as for its price, the device has a good camera with fairly detailed and rich photos.

Another positive aspect is the good battery capacity and thus good battery life.

But there are also enough negative aspects, for example, it is glossy plastic, only one speaker, there is no protection from water and it heats up a little under prolonged load. Although the most important feature is the price tag on the Motorola Edge S and let’s talk more about it.

Price and where to buy cheaper?

At the moment, it will be a little problematic to acquire the latest generation of Motorola smartphones. Since on the official website, all 10 thousand copies were sold out in 2 minutes.

Now the price of Motorola Edge S for the base version with version 6 and 128 GB of memory will be cost you for only $409.99.
