Today I want to touch on the topic of premium TWS earbuds from the well-known brand of audio equipment Moondrop. Previously, I was not able to test devices from Moondrop, but today I will have an interesting model called Moondrop Sparks.
These are the first true earbuds from a top brand of audio that I’ll be testing in this roundup. Therefore, I will be interested to know if there will be a difference in the sound quality of the new generation of Sparks earbuds from other Chinese manufacturers such as Huawei, Xiaomi, Oppo and other brands.
If we touch on the topic of price, then at the time of writing, the price tag for Moondrop Sparks headphones lay within $90. Naturally, these are not budget wireless headphones, so let’s take a look at the main features of this device model.
The new TWS earbuds from Moondrop come with the latest generation of Bluetooth 5.2 wireless connectivity. The earbuds also received a Qualcomm QCC 3040 chipset with support for aptX Adaptive, aptX, AAC and SBC audio codecs.
In addition, a 6 mm dynamic driver is used inside the headphone housing. I can also highlight the presence of a good battery life up to 8 hours without recharging. And of course the manufacturer Moondrop offers an interesting design with its own specs.
Thus, I propose to start a full and in-depth testing of the new generation of premium TWS earbuds segment and let me start my test by unpacking.
Moondrop Sparks: Specifications

|Bluetooth protocol:||aptX Adaptive, aptX, AAC, SBC|
Unboxing and packaging
The TWS packaging of the Moondrop Sparks earbuds has been done in their favorite anime style. For example, on the front side, there is a bright drawing of a girl with the name of the company and model. Meanwhile, the back of the box was more informative. Since there were the main technical specs, which I already talked about a little earlier.
At the same time, the quality of the packaging itself was very good. That is, the density of the box was thick and the device came to my review intact and without any damage.
But in the packaging itself, I found – this is, directly, the charging box itself with earbuds. There was also a large set of various documentation for use, a charging cable and four bags of completely different ear tips. Quite good, as for its class of devices, it has everything you need to fully listen to music.
Design, build quality and materials
Well, if you take a closer look at the new model of Moondrop Sparks earbuds, you can easily notice that the materials of manufacture were at a pretty good level. My version was done in black with gold decorative patterns. For example, the sun was depicted on one earpiece, and the moon was on the second channel.
It is also worth saying that the pattern on the outside of the earbud case will differ depending on the color. That is, you can also choose earbuds in pink or purple. An asterisk will be depicted in purple, and a flower in pink.
I also liked the plastic used in the Moondrop Sparks earbuds. It uses matte transparent plastic, which was pleasant to hold in the hand and to carry in the auricle. I also liked this plastic, especially the fact that there were no traces of use on it at all, as is often the case from glossy plastic.
If we talk about the build quality, then here, too, I did not reveal any strong claims. All the elements were assembled well and I did not identify any extraneous sounds during my testing. But in the instructions and on the official website, I did not find information about protection against water. Therefore, you will need to avoid humid environments such as rain, snow or other conditions.
As far as wearability is concerned, everything is very good here. During my test, I could wear earbuds for hours without much difficulty and did not feel much discomfort. This despite the fact that this version of the earbuds was in-ear with silicone ear tips. I can also highlight the presence of a large number of silicone ear tips of various shapes and materials.
On the outside of the body of the Moondrop Sparks earbuds, in addition to the moon and sun pattern, there is also a touch control panel here. But I will talk about her work a little later. There are three charging contacts on the inside of the headphone case. There is also a compensation hole and a microphone hole. A metal mesh was installed on the base of the sound guide to protect it from dust and dirt.
Ok, now it’s time to talk about the charging box of the Moondrop Sparks earbuds. Like the earbuds themselves, the charging box was also made of matte, tactile plastic. In addition, this plastic was a little transparent, like the earbuds in general.
On the front of the case, I saw the name of the Sparks model with three indicators that tell us the remaining battery level. Also, the indicator was installed from the inside of the case under the lid. But the upper part of the box lid was made in a gold style and beautifully combined with matte black plastic. Meanwhile, on the back of the box case, I found a Type-C connection for charging the box itself.
It should be noted, however, that the build quality was average. Since I can’t say with certainty that the Moondrop Sparks case was completely perfect. For example, the charging box lid had a slight backlash. But this did not greatly affect my positive impressions of the new TWS earbud model from the Moondrop brand.
Connection, latency and touch control
It didn’t take me more than 2 minutes to connect the Moondrop Sparks earbuds to my mobile device for the first time. Given that the subsequent connection was already automatic. As I said earlier, this headphone model received a Bluetooth 5.2 version of the wireless connection. This is the latest version of the wireless connection and therefore I had no problems with the connection quality at all.
I can also highlight the good work of the modern Qualcomm QCC 3040 chipset and the presence of aptX Adaptive, aptX, AAC and SBC audio codecs on board. This proves once again that the earbuds from the Moondrop brand received good performance in wireless communication.
The manufacturer also invites us to install its proprietary application called Moondrop Link. It can be installed through the Play or Apple Stores. But in the application itself, I found only information about the firmware version and touch control settings. The last section will allow you to customize the touch controls to suit your taste and priorities.
In addition, I can highlight a fairly low level of latency. For example, during games such as PUBG Mobile, the latency was minimal and I could play any shooter with great comfort. Also I had no problem playing videos on YouTube.
Now let’s talk a little about touch control. So the touch panel worked adequately and I did not have false clicks during my test.
- Double tapping on the touch panel will play, pause, accept or reject phone calls.
- Triple tapping on the right earbud switches the track forward, and on the left channel – backward.
Unfortunately, Sparks earbuds do not offer other functions, and this upset me a little.
Sound and microphone quality
The strength of the Moondrop Sparks wireless earbuds is their sound quality. It is not surprising that the price tag for the model has reached almost $90, but it is difficult to find special functionality here. Therefore, the manufacturer has made a serious emphasis on sound quality.
The low frequencies were played very harmoniously, dynamically and musically. But I cannot say that the bass level was strong. Yes, although the bass was present, it did not stand out much. I think it’s not that bad, as the mids and highs were well tuned.
For example, when it comes to mid and high frequencies, the level of detail of musical instruments was very crystal clear. In addition, I liked the sound of the vocalist’s voice, which gave the song a live sound, as if the music was really live and not in my ears.
Thus, I can confidently say that the sound quality on the Moondrop Sparks headphone model was the best ever in the TWS class of devices.
As for the quality of the microphone, it doesn’t really stand out. But in a quiet place, the interlocutors heard me quite well, but in noisy places my voice was no longer so clear and they had to listen to what I was saying.
Battery and run time
Surprisingly, I was amazed at the TWS battery life of the Sparks earbuds. A battery with a capacity of 50 mAh was installed in each earbud. In real life, at the maximum volume level, the earbuds were able to work for about 7 hours. This is a very serious indicator for wireless earbuds.
In addition, the charging case received a 700 mAh battery. Therefore, the total battery life using the charging box was up to 40-45 hours.
At the same time, the earbuds themselves are charged through the charging case in 55 minutes. But the box was charged in 1.5 hours via the Type-C connection.
Conclusion, reviews, pros and cons
Yes, it is possible that the new model of Moondrop Sparks wireless earbuds did not receive modern functions and features. But without much hesitation, I can recommend this headphone model for purchase.
Since the sound quality I was totally amazed. Although these earbuds were wireless, at first glance I thought they were wired. As you may know, only wired earbuds can deliver that sound detail. But with the Sparks model, I realized that it is possible to achieve good sound even wirelessly.
Another positive side of the Sparks earbuds is comfortable fit in the ear canal. I could wear earbuds for hours without any problems and did not feel much discomfort.
Naturally, I had no complaints about the build quality and materials used. The manufacturer really presented a good combination of price for sound quality and performance.
If we talk about the problem areas of earbuds from Moondrop, then this may not be a particularly wide functionality of touch control and the lack of modern functions. For example, transparency mode and active noise canceling functions.
Price and where to buy cheaper?
As I said at the beginning of the review, the price tag for the Moondrop Sparks wireless earbuds won’t be the sweetest. Therefore, you can currently grab the device for $89.99.
You can also purchase a protective leather case for the charging box for an additional fee of $5. Once again, I note that I liked the earbuds, even despite the lack of modern features.
