Just a few months ago, I tested the Microwear L16 smartwatch, and now the manufacturer has presented an updated Microwear L17 model.
In this article, I will share with you my impressions of the build quality, the materials used, and what features have been added compared to its predecessor.
Almost all of the Microwear smartwatches tested had pretty good technical features and functions, but the price tag was also very attractive. With the new generation of watches L17, the price has remained the same – about $30.
But the functions and specs are not bad – this is a large 1.3-inch touch screen. The watch also received a wireless Bluetooth 5.0 connection, full protection against the water of the IP68 standard and a large battery capacity of 300 mAh.
But let’s find out what new functionality has appeared and how they work in real life. So let’s get down to the full review and start my test with unboxing and appearance.
Microwear L17: Specifications
|Screen:||1.3 inch TFT screen with 360 by 360 pixels|
|Sensor:||Heart-rate monitor, Proximity sensor, Accelerometer|
|IP standart:||IP68 waterproof|
|Standby time:||up to 7 days|
|Size:||47.1 x 51.5 x 13.2 mm|
Unboxing and packaging
Considering that Microwear L17 watches belong to the budget category of devices, you should not expect a high-quality and premium box. On the front of the white box, there is a drawing of a watch with the designation of the smartwatch and the model name. Although I did not find any information about the brand.
Inside the box, the watch itself is located in a shipping film, and just below there is a two-pin charging magnetic cable and instructions for use. In the user manual itself, you can find the QR code for installing the mobile application.
In general, the equipment is very simple, but in the online store, you can easily order yourself an additional strap or a protective film for the watch screen.
Design, build quality and materials
Microwear L17 is a new smartwatch model that bears little resemblance to the previous generation Microwear L16. The new generation reminds me more of the early Microwear L11.
On the front part around the screen, there are glossy dots by which you can determine the exact time if you have an analog dial.
It is also worth noting that the new generation of smartwatches is not entirely compact. For example, the dimensions of the watch were 47.1 x 51.5 x 13.2 mm, and the device weighs about 83.2 grams.
On the wrist, the watch looks a little bulky and therefore is well suited for people with large hands. Although the watch is quite large and heavy, wearing it around the watch will be problematic. That is, it was uncomfortable for me to sleep in them, they are too big.
I have no complaints about the build quality, and about the materials used. For example, a metal alloy is used on the face, while the rest of the case is made of durable plastic. Also, I did not find any squeaks or other extraneous sounds.
As I mentioned, the front of the case houses a large 1.3-inch TFT screen with a resolution of 360 x 360 pixels. The quality of the screen itself is at a good level. It is very bright and contrasting, so it will be comfortable to use it in sunny and bright weather.
In addition, the viewing angles are very large. This way you can watch the time or read notifications even from an acute angle. In general, the quality of the screen is at a decent level, given the initial low cost of smartwatches.
On the right side, there are two mechanical control buttons. Where the top one is to turn on the screen, and the bottom one goes to the sport modes of the watch.
The manufacturer offers a wide range of colors. For example, you can order a watch in black, gray, or gold color. But there are also different straps – leatherette in brown and metal straps in gold, black and gray.
The strap is 22 mm wide and it is removable. Therefore, replacing it with any other of the same width will not be a problem. On my test, the strap is made of black metal, like the watch case itself.
The back of the smartwatch has two charging contacts and a heart rate sensor. I can also note that the Microwear L17 watch, like the previous generation L16, has IP68 water protection. This means you can feel free to soak your watch in water to a depth of 1.5 meters.
Functions, control, and application
As for all the functionality on the Microwear L17, it is completely identical to that of the previous L16 model. The main screen has a large number of different watch faces that you can install separately via the mobile application.
The main watch face shows a lot of useful information. For example, these are time, date, day of the week, steps, heart rate, battery level, and more. But all functions depend on the selected watch face. Naturally, the analog dial will have fewer functions.
If you swipe down, you’ll get to the quick settings menu. Here you can adjust the brightness level, do not disturb mode, and other features.
If you go to the right side of the main screen, then we get into the widget modes. The first widget is a daily activity, followed by sleep, various health tracking modes, and sports modes.
Also, to quickly go to the sports modes section, you just need to press the lower button.
If you go to the left side of the main screen, you will get to the main menu with the main functions. What I discovered here is to find a phone, timer, stopwatch, device info, factory reset, shutdown, languages , and others.
I also did some heart rate tests. I took a professional medical device that measures blood pressure and heart rate. The medical device showed me 121 by 91 pressure with 78 pulses, and the watch – 112 by 76 pressure, and the pulse was 76 beats per second. In terms of pressure, there is a slight deviation to the lower side, but the pulse shows the correct value.
Like the previous generation Microwear L16, the new L17 smartwatch received Bluetooth wireless connection with version 5.0. Thanks to this connection, you will be able to connect your watch to a mobile app called FitCloudPro. This is completely the same application as the L16 model.
After pairing, you will be able to monitor your performance. Such as heart rate, pressure, steps, distance, and more. Also, in the application settings, you can set the required application to which you can receive notifications. And most importantly, in the application, you have the opportunity to install a large number of additional watch faces on your smartwatch.
Battery and battery life
The Microwear L17 received slightly more battery capacity than the L16 version. A 300 mAh battery was installed inside the case, it can work for about one week.
Of course, the battery life is not the maximum, but as for inexpensive watches, an indicator of one week is a pretty good value.
Charging time for a full charge via the two-pin cable is about 1.5 hours.
Conclusion, reviews, pros, and cons
Microwear L17 is almost the same smartwatch as the previous model. But there were some improvements. For example, the L17 received a slightly increased battery capacity, but other functions and features remained the same.
Of course, the appearance is significantly different from the L16, but it strongly resembles the Microwear L11. The build quality and materials used are pretty good considering its low cost.
I also liked the watch for its wide functionality of settings and features. For example, you can monitor your health, manage music, and receive important notifications.
Price and where to buy cheaper?
The price for the new generation Microwear L17 remains the same as for the L16. You can get smartwatches at an interesting price for $ 30.99 with a 30% discount.
Definitely, I can recommend a smartwatch for purchase. But if you already have a version
Microwear L16, there is no point in updating to new ones, since the functions are completely identical.
