Again, we have in our hands a flagship killer who can even fight with the top manufacturer Xiaomi and Realme. Today I would like to talk about a new smartphone model called Huawei Nova 5T.

In this article, I will share my opinion on the use of the almost flagship Nova 5T smartphone, which can now be bought for about $390.

Recently I wrote a review about the Realme X2 Pro model, which has every chance of reaching the first place in the mobile market in terms of its characteristics. But what about the new smartphone from the Nova series?

The device received the flagship and top-end HiSilicon Kirin 980 processor from Huawei, but the other of the technical specifications are very similar to the specs of the middle-class devices. For example, a 6.26-inch IPS screen, a 48-megapixel main camera and a 3750 mAh battery capacity with a fast charging of 22.5 watts.

So sit back and let’s start our Nova 5T test and find out if it’s worth the money or not?

Huawei Nova 5T: Unboxing

A standard small white box meets us from Huawei. On the front, I see the logo and the name of the model, without any pictures.

Huawei Nova 5T Review: Gaming Smartphone with Kirin 980 & GPU Turbo 3.0

When you open the box – I see the smartphone itself with a protective film on the back, then a SIM needle, documentation, a cheap silicone transparent case.

Huawei Nova 5T Review: Gaming Smartphone with Kirin 980 & GPU Turbo 3.0

Lied a little lower – a Type-C power cable for the connector, a 22.5 W power adapter, and wired headphones.

Of course, from the configuration of the smartphone about $400, you expect a little more, for example, a better protective case. But even though the headphones put the kit and it is already pleasing.

Huawei Nova 5T: Design

Appearance The new smartphone in the Nova line got a typical solution, like its brothers. Nova 5T is made of glass on both the front and rear panels, and the frame is aluminum. A good solution and the device really looks premium both in the hand.

Huawei Nova 5T Review: Gaming Smartphone with Kirin 980 & GPU Turbo 3.0

The corners of the smartphone have a slight rounding and it’s quite convenient to hold the Nova 5T in your hands, but controlling with one hand will be problematic.

Huawei Nova 5T Review: Gaming Smartphone with Kirin 980 & GPU Turbo 3.0

On the front panel is a 6.26-inch screen with a hole punch notch for the front camera. A common solution in the Nova line, and this time the smartphone does not look bad.

Huawei Nova 5T Review: Gaming Smartphone with Kirin 980 & GPU Turbo 3.0

I am always happy with the new solution for the location of the front camera and as for me, it is a better solution than for example a waterdrop notch.

Huawei Nova 5T Review: Gaming Smartphone with Kirin 980 & GPU Turbo 3.0

The rear panel received four camera sensors and an LED flash in the upper left corner. Also, I really like the pattern on the back, which harmoniously shimmers in the sunlight.

Huawei Nova 5T Review: Gaming Smartphone with Kirin 980 & GPU Turbo 3.0

As you can see, there is no fingerprint scanner on the rear panel, as it is located on the side right side of the device. It also serves as a power button and a little higher is the volume rocker.

Huawei Nova 5T Review: Gaming Smartphone with Kirin 980 & GPU Turbo 3.0

On the left side of the smartphone, there is a slot for two nano-SIM cards, but there is no slot for a microSD memory card.

The lower edge received the main speaker, Type-C port and microphone.

The upper part of the device is equipped with an infrared port and an additional noise-canceling microphone.

Huawei Nova 5T Review: Gaming Smartphone with Kirin 980 & GPU Turbo 3.0

I have no questions about the quality of the assembly, as well as the materials of manufacture.

There are a few flaws in the design, for example – there is no 3.5 mm audio jack and the location of the fingerprint scanner on the edge, although for the price of $ 400 I would prefer the scanner to be located under the screen.

Huawei Nova 5T: Screen

As I already said, the Huawei Nova 5T device received a 6.26 inch IPS screen with Full HD+ resolution or 1080 x 2340 pixels.

Huawei Nova 5T Review: Gaming Smartphone with Kirin 980 & GPU Turbo 3.0

The aspect ratio is 19.5: 9, the pixel density is 412 PPI and the usable area occupied by the screen on the front is 84.2%.

Huawei Nova 5T Review: Gaming Smartphone with Kirin 980 & GPU Turbo 3.0

Again, when compared with Realme X2 Pro, which has almost the same price, then the Nova 5T – the screen does not stand out.

Huawei Nova 5T Review: Gaming Smartphone with Kirin 980 & GPU Turbo 3.0

Yes, it is really good, it has good brightness and viewing angles, but it does not have such features as a 90 Hz screen or even AMOLED technology.

Huawei Nova 5T: Performance and Software

Of course, the main feature in the Huawei Nova 5T smartphone is its performance, since the flagship HiSilicon Kirin 980 processor is installed here. It is built on 7-nanometer technology and has a maximum processor frequency of 2.6 GHz.

Huawei Nova 5T Review: Gaming Smartphone with Kirin 980 & GPU Turbo 3.0

The processor works in conjunction with the Mali-G76 MP10 graphics chip. In addition, Nova 5T received an improved GPU Turbo 3.0, which will increase the performance in games.

Huawei Nova 5T Review: Gaming Smartphone with Kirin 980 & GPU Turbo 3.0

Below I would like to show tests from benchmarks. For example, the AnTuTu test showed a total of 307,380 points, and if you compare the Snapdragon 855 +, its result in Realme X2 Pro is much better and amounts to 404,681 points.

Huawei Nova 5T Review: Gaming Smartphone with Kirin 980 & GPU Turbo 3.0

In real life, both smartphones work identically and you will not see any differences in speed, but the fact remains with the fact.

Huawei Nova 5T Review: Gaming Smartphone with Kirin 980 & GPU Turbo 3.0

Of course, games on the Nova 5T can be played on the maximum schedule and you will not notice any delays. The same goes for overheating, during testing I did not find any problems.

Huawei Nova 5T received an Android 9.0 operating system and it runs on the EMUI 9.1 user interface.

Huawei Nova 5T Review: Gaming Smartphone with Kirin 980 & GPU Turbo 3.0

If you were previously familiar with devices from Huawei, then you should not expect big problems. It works stably and I do not notice any delays or other annoying factors.

Huawei Nova 5T Review: Gaming Smartphone with Kirin 980 & GPU Turbo 3.0

Yes, as usual, the user will be accompanied by a large number of useful applications that will be useful in real life. But without any problems, any application can be deleted.

Huawei Nova 5T: Camera

Four sensors of the main camera were installed on the rear panel. The Nova 5T main sensor is a Sony IMX586 48-megapixel camera with f/1.8 aperture. Second 16-megapixel sensor with f/2.2 aperture for ultra-wide shots. The third and fourth 2-megapixel sensors with f/2.4 aperture for macro and bokeh shots.

Huawei Nova 5T Review: Gaming Smartphone with Kirin 980 & GPU Turbo 3.0

A 32-megapixel camera with f/2.0 aperture, which makes incredibly beautiful portrait photographs, is installed on the front side.

Huawei Nova 5T Review: Gaming Smartphone with Kirin 980 & GPU Turbo 3.0

The camera application has a lot of functions and therefore if you like taking pictures, here you can find any settings to your taste.

The camera shoots very well in the daytime, the photos are well detailed and have good colors. There is also a night mode, so the pictures are also pretty good, but still, the quality lags behind the real flagships.

The video shoots in 4K at 30 frames per second and the main camera has gyro-EIS stabilization, so the video is pretty smooth.

Huawei Nova 5T: Connectivity and Sound

The Nova 5T is equipped with good wireless connectivity, two nano-SIM cards with 4G LTE support in each are installed onboard. There is also a dual Wi-Fi network 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 5.0, contactless payment NFC.

Huawei Nova 5T Review: Gaming Smartphone with Kirin 980 & GPU Turbo 3.0

In addition, the Huawei smartphone is equipped with A-GPS, GLONASS, BDS, GALILEO, QZSS, which allows satellites to quickly find the device with a minimum distance.

Nova 5T received only one speaker on the lower edge, it plays quite loudly and has a pleasant bass sound, but unfortunately, there is no stereo sound.

Huawei Nova 5T Review: Gaming Smartphone with Kirin 980 & GPU Turbo 3.0

Also included is a Type-C adapter for 3.5 mm audio jack, so you can connect your favorite headphones, as you understand there is no 3.5mm input.

Huawei Nova 5T: Battery

Inside the Nova 5T case, a 3750 mAh capacitive battery with fast charging was installed.

Huawei Nova 5T Review: Gaming Smartphone with Kirin 980 & GPU Turbo 3.0

During testing, the device worked for about 1.5 days with an intense load or about 15 hours with the screen on time. This is a good indicator, which guarantees low processor energy consumption and with average use, you can charge your smartphone every two days.

Huawei Nova 5T Review: Gaming Smartphone with Kirin 980 & GPU Turbo 3.0

There is fast charging with a 22.5W adapter, which guarantees to charge from 0 to 50% in just 25 minutes. Of course, this is not as fast as the Realme X2 Pro with a 50W adapter, but also not bad.

Huawei Nova 5T: Conclusions and Reviews

If we attribute the Huawei Nova 5T to the category of middle-class smartphones, then the device is really worth its attention. But as for the flagship killer, the Nova 5T is still far away.

Huawei Nova 5T Review: Gaming Smartphone with Kirin 980 & GPU Turbo 3.0

The main features are good processor performance, high-quality camera and good battery life on a single charge. Also, having a hole punch on the front panel for the camera is an excellent solution than the typical notches solution in the waterdrop form.

Huawei Nova 5T Review: Gaming Smartphone with Kirin 980 & GPU Turbo 3.0

Of course, the device lacks minor flaws, for example, only the IPS screen and not AMOLED, the side location of the fingerprint scanner, and not under the screen and the absence of a 3.5 mm audio jack.

Huawei Nova 5T: Price and Where to buy cheaper?

Now you can buy a smartphone Huawei Nova 5T at a low price for $384.79 with a 20% discount.
