This is not the first phone with a punch hole screen for the front camera. But in this review, I would like to talk about the new generation of the Honor View series under the title Huawei Honor V20.
It’s much more than the Triple Camera, which features the Honor model – even though it’s the figurehead, of course. With the Honor V20, the Chinese could even succeed in replacing Samsung as the market leader. As? This shows the test.
Huawei has presented the Huawei Honor V20 a top-of-the-range smartphone which received the latest Kirin 980 chip with 6/8GB RAM and 128/256GB memory, punch hole screen, 4000 mAh higher battery capacity.
So let’s start a full review of the Honor V20 phone and we begin as usual with the specifications.

Huawei Honor V20: Design and Appearance
If you take the Huawei Honor V20 for the first time in your hand in our test, it does not seem so big, despite the 6.4-inch display. This is partly due to the narrow edges that surround the screen.
On the other hand, the elongated format of 19.5: 9. In addition, Huawei adapts with the punch hole the current trend.
If you look around from the front to the back, you will see another new detail compared to the V10.
So Huawei has bent the display by the edges. Even the shiny metal frame V form, which is interrupted by antennas.
Up and down still quite wide, it narrows in the curves to the sides. This has the advantage that the device is even flattering in the hand.
Before it goes on on the sides rounded back on this same, two more details about the frame. A jack connection is still looking in vain. The Chinese manufacturer uses the space that the jack would claim differently and invest in a larger battery.
The energy storage in the Honor V20 has a charge of 4000 mAh – 250 mAh more than its predecessor.
On the glass back dominates the camera module, which reminds a little of a ceramic hob – even if Huawei like to draw here compared to the headlights of a state-of-the-art sports car.
There is the 48MP camera with TOF stereo deep lens camera different focal lengths and a dual-tone LED.
In addition, it is noticeable that the fingerprint sensor has disappeared. The Honor V10 is still directly under the dual camera.
On the Honor V20, Huawei integrates the biometric sensor into the display.
The Huawei Honor V20 in our review is torsionally stiff like a beech wood board. It is very dominant in the hand, which is due to the weight of about 180 grams, respectively, to thank.
During the bending test, the device does not yield a millimeter. Even though metal and glass are currently in the trend among smartphone manufacturers like glam metal bands in the 80s, Huawei combines the materials perfectly.
The back of the green and blue version is finely ribbed, which is palpable. As a result, the Honor V20 slips less often from the dry hand in the analisis.
Furthermore, the slightly out of the case camera module has lost its sharp edges compared to the Honor V10. And there are no other mistakes anywhere in terms of processing.
Full points. Huawei has managed to completely overtake the Honor V10 in design. Nevertheless, the Chinese are based on the current market standard and have probably gestalt to Samsung when it came to the design of frames and the rounded glass elements front and rear.
Huawei Honor V20: Display
At 6.4 inches in diagonal, the Huawei Honor V20’s IPS display is nearly the same size as the Galaxy Note 9 (6.4 inches). In addition, Huawei put the Honor V20 on the rack.
While the previous model has a display format of 18: 9, the Chinese pull the screen of the Honor V20 on a ratio of 19.5: 9. As a result, the new model does not seem so bulky overall, although it is one millimeter thicker.
Although both Honor models have an IPS display, the Honor V20 puts Huawei but still a shovel pixel on it. Thus, the screen of the newcomer dissolves in Full HD + with 1080 x 2310 pixels.
In addition, Huawei jumps on the Notch train and provides the new model with a display cut at the top with a punch hole screen.
With regard to the sharpness, there are hardly any differences even with a close look. In everyday life, the higher resolution is not really noticeable. Especially not if you have no comparison.
While you can not find any differences in color, the white level on the Huawei Honor V20 is much better. This is slightly darker and more yellowish in the Honor V10. But also here is: If you do not have both devices next to each other, you will not miss the whiter white.
The automatic brightness control of the Honor V20 has nothing to complain about. The processor, in cooperation with the photocell, adjusts the brightness of the display very quickly and precisely to the ambient light.
In addition, the viewing angle stability is excellent. As you turn the device, the display loses hardly any radiance and the color fidelity is maintained.
Huawei Honor V20: Hardware and Performance
With the Kirin 980, a new high-end processor enters the smartphone segment of Huawei and is immediately used in the Huawei Honor V20, like with Mate 20 Pro.
Thanks to artificial intelligence, the new chip should be even smarter than its predecessor. In addition, the Kirin 980 next to the Apple A12 is one of the world’s first processors in 7nm production and supports LTE Cat.21.
Thus, the Huawei Honor V20 is the first smartphone that achieves download rates of up to 1.4 GBit/s.
In addition, the Kirin 980 Huawei According to 134 percent faster and 88 percent more efficient than its predecessor chip, which comes 10 Pro for use in the mate.
This is also reflected in the benchmark test of AnTuTu: Here comes the Huawei Honor V20 to 249.187 points in our test.
As far as the benchmark test is concerned, the Honor V20 is currently ranked ninth on the list of all smartphones tested by inside handy.
Although it lands just before the Galaxy S9 + and Galaxy Note 9, but also far behind the current leader, the iPhone XS Max (364,994 points). Also, the Razer Phone 2, Sony Xperia XZ3, the HTC U12 + and the OnePlus 6 and the LG G7 ThinQ could more points in AnTuTu Benchmark test.
However, if you look at the values the Geekbench test spits out, the Honor V20 comes in first – at least in terms of multi-core performance (9,821 points). In the single-core rating (3,344 points), only Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9 are ahead of the top model of the Chinese.
The Huawei Honor V20 has a 128 or 256GB of storage repository and 6 or 8GB of RAM. However, the internal memory of the Honor V20 can be increased, which is not possible with the predecessor model.
Thus, Huawei fixes the obvious shortcoming though. However, it is not a normal MicroSD card that the user can use here. Rather, it is a new format developed by Huawei: the Nano-Memory Card (NM Card). This is half the size of a MicroSD card and is currently manufactured only by Huawei. If you want to enlarge your data depot, you have to calculate a new purchase.
Huawei Honor V20: Connectivity
With regard to its interfaces, the Huawei Honor V20 is well equipped. An LTE chip allows downloads up to 1.4 Gbps (Cat 21).
A speed that is currently not even reached by any network in this country. Vodafone has already equipped the first cities with mobile phone base stations that are capable of gigabit.
In addition, the Honor V20 in the analisis supports Bluetooth 5.0 and is available as a dual-SIM version. As already mentioned, buyers have a 3.5mm jack on the top.
The high-end processor including artificial intelligence, the latest connection standards, and optional dual-SIM: In this category, the Honor V20 lacks almost nothing. Even a memory expansion is in contrast to the previous model on board – but unfortunately not in standard format.
Huawei Honor V20: Software
In the operating system, Huawei continues to rely on Google’s Android. The Chinese install the latest version of Android 9.0 Pie and cover it with their own user interface Magic UI 2.0.
The user interface is much cleaner and tidier than it was a few generations ago. Huawei has moved away from the unmanageable variety of functions, which you can see at first glance.
It is a pity that you can not drag the app drawer, that screen that displays all the apps in the overview, with a swipe gesture, as is currently the trend with any launcher. Instead, the button remains at the bottom of the screen – if you want. Because by default apps are distributed side by side on several homescreens.
When you first set up the Honor V20 this seems sensible at first. However, if you sign up with a Google account and tell the smartphone to install the apps that you have used on the old phone, it can quickly become confusing and crowded on the homescreens.
Huawei Honor V20: Camera
The Huawei Honor V20 has a 48MP camera with TOF 3D stereo camera in the back and one in the front show what Huawei is up to. The company wants to dominate the camera market in the smartphone industry.
This was already possible with the Honor V20 and should again put on it. For this to succeed, Huawei waives a monochrome sensor and instead builds a wide-angle camera.
If you shoot in Pro mode, you can not only set parameters such as ISO, shutter speed, and white balance yourself. The camera menu also lets you switch on the RAW format. The shot photos take up more space but can be edited more intensively as they contain more information.
Furthermore, Huawei improves the macro function. The photographer can now approach up to 2.5 centimeters close to the subject and it is still in focus.
For comparison, if the user wants to capture a macro with the Honor V10, he has to hold the phone about 6.5 inches from the subject. The test showed that Huawei did not promise too much here.
In addition, portraits can impress with beautiful bokeh and you can add some filters that mimic folding blinds, stained glass, or stage lighting.
This, on the other hand, is a nice effect that the software does not do well, especially on the edges of the person being portrayed. Various filters can also be switched on when self-portraying with the front camera. If you do without it, the camera spits out halfway sharp selfies on the front.
In addition, Huawei is expanding the video capabilities of the Honor V20. In addition to normal movies, you can also shoot videos that can be provided with a live filter. These include Vintage, Fresh, Tension, and Blurred Background.
Anyone who takes a movie can now, as it is already possible when photographing, provide the background of the camera software with bokeh. In addition to a blurred background, this can also be displayed in a further setting black and white.
The AI recognizes a person in the foreground, lets it appear in color in the film and displays everything else in monochrome.
The surface of the camera app has become a bit clearer and more intuitive compared to the Huawei Honor V10. So you know at any time, which function is active by the displayed bar with the different modes.
Huawei reduces the icons at the top of the screen and inserts the “large aperture” and the portrait mode in the sliding bar.
Despite teething problems in the video mode and the unclean cut people in the portrait, the camera equipment of the Huawei Honor V20 sets new standards in the field of smartphone photography.
The Huawei Honor V20 in our test is the first smartphone to leave the inside phone test lab with more than 100 percentage points.
Huawei Honor V20: Battery
Huawei rebuilds the battery compared to the rechargeable battery in the Honor V10. Instead of 3750, there is now 4000 mAh charge.
Thanks to the 22.5W “Huawei SuperCharge”, the Honor V20’s battery is charged from 0 to 60 percent within 30 minutes. This proved the device impressively in the test.
In addition: The Honor V20 can now be charged wirelessly via Qi. And that is supposed to work 160 percent faster than the iPhone X.
According to Huawei, however, after half an hour compared to charging by cable, only 30 percent more in it than before. The special feature of Huawei Qi charging process: it works in the other direction, Huawei calls it “reverse charging without cable”.
At the end of this demanding 8-hour working day, 73 remaining percentages could be read from the battery scale.
This puts the Huawei Honor V20 high in the list of smartphones tested by inside handy. In standby mode, the battery of the top model lost ten percentage points – a good value. After a total of 24 hours remained thus still 63 percent.
Thus, almost nothing is in the way of another day. And should it ever be scarce, the battery – thanks to Huawei SuperCharge – replenished quickly.
Huawei Honor V20: Conclusions and Reviews
Those who invest in the Huawei Honor V20, in return, probably the best smartphone of the year in our review. The new Honor V model is a bit better than the Honor V10 in almost every category.
In addition, the Huawei Honor V20 offers the latest technology currently available on the smartphone market. Starting with the punch hole display camera, a huge battery with colossal battery life, the cameras with different focal lengths up to the 3D face unlocking and a high-end processor with artificial intelligence, which is one of the fastest on the market.
In general, this is a great phone that has accommodated the latest trends in the mobile phone industry. This is a potential rival to his fellow Mate 20 Pro with the same processor but at a lower price. Therefore, this Honor V20 phone is worth your attention.
Does Huawei have the potential to push Samsung off the smartphone throne with the Honor V20? Yes, the Chinese could actually succeed.
Huawei Honor V20: Price and Where to buy cheaper?
Looking at the launch price, the Huawei Honor V20, which costs two times more than the Honor V10, plays in the premier class.
For one or the other, the price-performance ratio should be balanced. However, those who can not or do not want to spend that amount will still be happy with the Honor V10.
But if you compare prices with HUAWEI Mate 20 Pro, then the prices are much different from the Honor V20.
Since now you can buy the Honor V20 with the lowest price of $ 529.99, and the price of the Mate 20 Pro starts at $ 950.
Therefore, if you add these two phones, then the Honor V20 has a good price for its appearance and specification.
