Huawei has unveiled the next flagship earbuds. The new model of TWS earbuds very much resembles Apple AirPods Pro in terms of their functionality, but they have a completely opposite design. The new earbuds are called Huawei FreeBuds Pro.
I have been waiting for another wireless earbud from Huawei for a long time and now I will tell you why. The new generation of earbuds has received many interesting features and very high-quality sound, but more about them later.
In this review, I will tell you what impressions the earbuds gave me when I first met. Apart from that, you will learn about the main advantages and disadvantages, but first of all, let’s look at the cost.
I analyzed many Internet sites in different countries of the world and found that the price on Aliexpress is currently the most attractive. Anyone can already purchase Huawei FreeBuds Pro for $200.
A little about the technical specs and features. The first thing that many users now pay attention to is the active noise cancellation ANC, as well as the transparency mode. So in the FreeBuds Pro model, these two features are present.
In addition, the earbuds received the latest generation of Bluetooth 5.2 connections, support for AAC and SBC codecs, as well as good battery life.
Therefore, I propose to begin my detailed and in-depth review of the earbuds to find out what the FreeBuds Pro is capable of and what flaws were hidden from the advertising posters.

Unboxing and packaging
For review, I received a small box, which is made in white. And on the front, there is a picture and designation of the model and company name. I want to note that the box itself has rather thick and sturdy cardboard, which is very good.
Inside the box, I found – this is the charging box itself with earbuds inside. And in the lower part, there is also an additional box. In which I found instructions for use, a Type-C charging cable and a set of various ear tips.
Thus, my first acquaintance with the complete set turned out to be quite positive. Here I was pleased with the high-quality and pleasant materials, especially how the ear tips are made. Therefore, now let’s look at how the earbuds are assembled and what material they are made of.
Design, build quality and materials
Huawei offers three different colors that have been introduced for the FreeBuds Pro model. It is black, white, and gray. I have earbuds in gray on my test and I want to note that this color is very attractive and unusual, as for TWS earbuds.
The earbuds themselves are made of glossy plastic and in gray color, this plastic generally resembles a ceramic coating. But in fact, it is a regular glossy plastic. I have been testing the earbuds for several days now and I can say that the glossy body is easily fingerprinted, but it can also be easily erased.
In addition, the earbuds fell on the asphalt once but did not leave any scuffs or scratches on the case. Although, I always say that glossy plastic is more wear-resistant than matte, for example.
I have no complaints about the build quality, all components are assembled perfectly precisely and without any extraneous sounds and creaks.
As far as convenience goes, the FreeBuds Pro sits pretty well in my ears. I could easily listen to music or watch videos for 2 hours or more. In addition, I gave several other people to wear earbuds and they all said that they did not experience any problems with wearing comfort. That is, this is one of the many earbuds that will suit everyone, whether you have big or small ears.
I was able to exercise without too much trouble using FreeBuds Pro. Even when running, the earbuds did not fall out and sat very tightly in the ear canal.
The appearance of the new flagship earbuds from Huawei received a completely opposite style than, for example, the AirPods Pro. For example, the legs are made with an almost square section and the leg itself is of small height.
The touch panel is located on the side ends of the leg and I want to note that the control itself is very intuitive and, most importantly, accurate. But I’ll talk about the control functions a little later.
At the bottom of the leg, there are two charging contacts. There are unusual holes for microphones along the body, I counted three in total.
The charging box, unlike the earbud case, is made of matte plastic, which feels like aluminum. But it is worth noting that in black and white, the charging box will have glossy plastic, like the earbuds themselves.
The build quality of the box itself is at a high level, the lid has a magnetic connection and opens without any backlash. Inside the box are the earbuds themselves and an LED battery level indicator.
In addition, the box has a button for quick pairing, a Type-C port for charging, and, of course, the wireless charging function is also present.
Connection, latency, and control
I already mentioned that the flagship Huawei FreeBuds Pro earbuds received the latest generation of wireless connectivity – Bluetooth 5.2. During my testing, I did not find any dips and the signal quality was always stable.
Another issue for FreeBuds Pro is its Kirin A1 chipset, which only has AAC and SBC codecs. By default, the earbuds automatically connect to the SBC codec and if you want to use the AAC codec, you will have to enable it yourself every time. As for aptX and aptX HD codecs, they will not be available, since these codecs are used with Qualcomm processes.
In the mobile application, you are able to configure various modes of active noise canceling. From cozy to ultra-high. That is, you can set the ANC operation level depending on the degree of the ambient volume level.
In addition, in the application menu, you can set gesture controls that are more convenient and comfortable for you, if the standard one seems inconvenient to you.
I can also say that the new generation FreeBuds Pro earbuds are designed mostly for Huawei smartphones. Since you will be able to use a convenient pop-up window while connecting. But I note that fast connection will be present in other models of smartphones for both Android and iOS devices.
The lag during games is practically not noticeable and it is quite comfortable to play the shooter genre. I also liked one feature – you can connect earbuds to two devices at the same time. For example, on a laptop, you are watching a movie, and on a smartphone, a call comes in, you can easily answer this call.
In terms of control functionality, the new earbuds from Huawei have almost all the features. That is, you can switch tracks, adjust the volume, play, and pause, receive calls, and also switch modes from normal to active noise cancellation.
Sound and microphone quality, ANC and transparency modes
Huawei FreeBuds Pro is not just a flagship earbud that has received modern features, but it also has a perfect sound combination.
The low frequencies of the earbuds have quite rich and massive bass. Which, in turn, does not interrupt and does not climb into the middle and high frequencies.
At the same time, the mid and high frequencies play a level better than any predecessors, such as Huawei FreeBuds 3 or Huawei FreeBuds 3i. If we compare the sound quality with AirPods Pro, then everything is a little more complicated here. Since different compositions are played differently. For example, Apple’s earbuds have better sound quality at high frequencies, while Huawei’s low frequencies are far superior to their competitor.
Overall, I really liked the way the FreeBuds Pro earbuds sound. They got a very rich and dynamic sound with a clear and crystal voice of the vocalist.
Now a little about the functions of active noise cancellation. Everything here is at a very excellent level, as the company has worked with the new model to glory. For example, when using FreeBuds Pro in ultra mode, the surrounding sounds are not only inaudible but generally as if you are in complete silence. I believe that the manufacturer even overdid it with the power of active noise cancellation. But I really liked the result and I think many users will also like it.
A few words about the transparency mode, in FreeBuds Pro it works adequately positively. This mode is intended for urban use, as passive sound insulation is at a high level. Therefore, this mode is intended so that you can hear the surrounding sounds.
I have no complaints about the quality of the microphone. The interlocutor will hear me clearly and, most importantly, clearly even in loud and noisy places.
Battery and run time
Inside each Huawei FreeBuds Pro earbud, a 55 mAh battery was installed. During my tests, I managed to achieve a result of 7 hours at a 70% volume level.
This result is very impressive and thanks to the new generation of Bluetooth 5.2 wireless connection. It consumes less power when transmitting audio data.
Using active noise canceling, the battery life was 4 hours, which is also not bad for modern earbuds in 2020.
The charging time via Type-C port was up to 1 hour and 10 minutes, and twice as long via wireless charging – 2.5 hours.
Conclusion, reviews, pros, and cons
Huawei FreeBuds Pro is not just a unique wireless earbud with a beautiful design, but also good sound and perfect active noise canceling.
Many users cannot find not only high-quality earbuds but also those that will fit perfectly in the ear canal. So I want to say that Huawei has done a very good job in terms of wearability. As my practice has shown, earbuds are suitable for many users, which is important.
In addition, the battery life is good and with the charging box you can get up to 30 hours of operation.
After a short acquaintance, I definitely liked the earbuds with its high-quality sound and functionality.
Price and where to buy cheaper?
You can currently purchase Huawei FreeBuds Pro at a low and affordable price of $198.99 with a 13% discount.
Therefore, I can easily recommend the new flagship earbuds from the Huawei brand. They really look much cooler than their main competitors, but even surpass in functionality.
