Huawei FreeBuds 3: Unboxing

I got a fairly typical box design in the FreeBuds line for review. This is a white box with gold letters and the name of the model, also on the front part are open-fit earbuds and a charging case.

On the back of the box are the main technical specifications.

Inside the box, I found a round-shaped charging case in a protective film and inside it was earbuds.

I also found a Type-C charging cable for the connector and it got a rather large size, like on smartphones. Usually, I met short cables from my competitors. In addition, I would like to note that I have a black version of the earbuds, but the cable is white. Of course, you can say that I find fault, but I would like to get a charging cable in the color of the device.

Last, in the box was a brief instruction for connecting and controlling the device. As you can see, the ear pads are not included, as the design of the open-fit earbuds is made on the principle of Apple AirPods.

The design of the box looks premium and all the elements are laid beautifully in each individual box. Therefore, during transportation, problems with the appearance will not arise.

Huawei FreeBuds 3: Design

As you can see from the unpacking section, I received wireless open-fit earbuds for a black, but you can also purchase in white.

Huawei FreeBuds 3 In-Depth Review: Bluetooth 5.1 and Noise-Canceling ANC

The new generation of Huawei FreeBuds 3 has a typical appearance, like previous models of FreeBuds 2 or FreeBuds 2 Pro. Of course, you may find slight differences, but the design remains almost untouched.

As I have already written many times, that open-fit earbud, that is, earphones without silicone tips, ear pads are not very comfortable both in wearing and while listening to music. This type of earbuds does not always fit tightly in your ears and the sound has a lot of loss.

Also, this type of inserts may not be suitable for every user, so even if you want to purchase this model, I would recommend measuring them in the store, only after that buy.

Oddly enough, it was the size and shape of the Huawei FreeBuds 3 that came very well to my ears. They sit comfortably and even with prolonged use, I did not feel discomfort. In addition, the FreeBuds 3 wireless earbuds have a comfortable fit both during sports and during everyday use.

The open-fit earbuds received black glossy plastic, naturally, it will be easily soiled and leave fingerprints, but on white, it will be less noticeable than on black.

The build quality at the highest level, I did not notice any creaks and gaps made perfectly. Of course, there can be no other, when the price tag is higher than $ 200.

Huawei FreeBuds 3 have in combination not only plastic but also a metal insert on the lower base, where the microphone is located.

On the front side, there is a typical touchpad for control and an LED indicator. Touch control works quickly and accurately, you can also customize the control for yourself, but I will talk about this later.

The sound guides are round in shape and have a protective metal mesh to prevent foreign debris and dust.

In addition, the open-fit earbuds have an infrared sensor at the base of the sound guide. It pauses the music when you remove one of the earbuds from the ear canal.

The Huawei FreeBuds 3 are IPX4 splashproof and water-resistant. Naturally, swimming or taking a shower is prohibited.

The charging case is made of the same glossy plastic as the FreeBuds 3 open-fit earbuds themselves and has a round shape. The dimensions and weight are minimal, and it also fits easily into your jeans pocket.

The lid has a magnetic connection and it does not play, it opens accurately and without any questions. The earbuds also stay inside the case thanks to the magnetic connection. Between the landing of the earbuds, you can see the LED indicator of the charge level.

On the bottom of the case is a Type-C port for charging, it is also worth noting that the box has wireless charging.

In general, I do not have any strong comments on the appearance and build quality. But I still prefer matte plastic and would like to get 100% protection against water.

Huawei FreeBuds 3: Connection and Control

The first global update in the new Huawei FreeBuds 3 model, if we compare the previous generation, is the availability of Bluetooth version 5.1. The new wireless connection provides the best quality signal transmission over a distance of 10 meters. As practice has shown, I could use earbuds throughout the apartment and the signal held tight and there was no interference or interruption.

If you are using a smartphone from Huawei with EMUI 10 or higher, then to connect the earbuds to the device, you just need to open the cover and remove the headphones. Next, a pairing window will pop up on your mobile device, as is the principle on versions from Apple or Samsung.

If you have another device, then pairing will be carried out like any other wireless earbuds. You need to go to the Bluetooth menu on your mobile device and select FreeBuds 3 from the list. Further connections will be automatic.

In addition, the open-fit earbuds received additional settings through the Huawei AI Life mobile application. If you already have a smartphone from Huawei, then this application will already be installed. If you have another Android device, then you can install it through the Google Play Store.

The main features of the Huawei AI Life application are the control settings for the multifunctional touch panel. You can customize the control for yourself and set which gestures will respond to your commands.

You can also set the active noise reduction level stronger or weaker, and of course, get updates.

Double-click on the left channel of the earphone – enable or disable noise reduction, if on the right channel – play/pause or answer/hang up. These functions are standard by default, in the application you can change the control to your taste.

Huawei FreeBuds 3: Sound

Inside the body of the Huawei FreeBuds 3 open-fit earbuds, a 14 mm dynamic driver is installed, which works in conjunction with Huawei’s proprietary Kirin A1 processor.

Huawei FreeBuds 3 In-Depth Review: Bluetooth 5.1 and Noise-Canceling ANC

In terms of sound quality, the FreeBuds 3 earbuds got a pretty good sound. The low frequencies are well matched, they got fast dynamics with perfect detail.

A clear sound will pleasantly surprise you, but the bass is not so strong. Most likely the bass is lost, since the headphones do not sit so tightly, as for example with ear pads.

The mid and high frequencies are also well defined, have the correct character of the sound. At maximum volume, sounds do not creak or cut your hearing, so even at maximum volume, you can listen to your favorite music.

If we compare the sound quality of Huawei FreeBuds 3 with AirPods of the second generation, then FreeBuds are slightly behind. Apple’s sound in AirPods is well filled with bass, surround, and has good dynamics and volume.

Huawei FreeBuds 3 In-Depth Review: Bluetooth 5.1 and Noise-Canceling ANC

The microphone quality is good, as the main microphone is located at the bottom of the open-fit earbuds. The interlocutor heard me cleanly and without any interference, so I myself did.

The main feature of Huawei FreeBuds 3 is the presence of ANC active noise canceling, oddly enough, the function works perfectly and copes with its task completely.

The principle of operation can be automatic or manual, in the first mode – the headphones analyze the noise level around them thanks to an additional microphone.

Huawei FreeBuds 3 In-Depth Review: Bluetooth 5.1 and Noise-Canceling ANC

If the noise is not strong, the noise-canceling level will be negligible and vice versa. The standard value for noise reduction is 15 dB, and as the practice has shown, the ANC function is really useful, even not in the noisiest places. When the ANC function is on, the sound becomes more saturated and surrounds.

Huawei FreeBuds 3: Battery

Inside each Huawei FreeBuds 3 earbud is a 30 mAh battery capacity. This is a very small indicator and during testing, the earbuds were able to work for about 3.5 hours with ANC turned on and at maximum volume.

Huawei FreeBuds 3 In-Depth Review: Bluetooth 5.1 and Noise-Canceling ANC

Of course, this is not the best indicator even in its class, for example, headphones with a price tag of $80 can work out for 7-8 hours on a single charge.

Also, I have an additional case for 410 mAh battery capacity, which is able to charge the headphones about 4 more times. The total time will be approximately 18 hours, of course, if you listen to 60-70% of the volume level, the figure will be slightly higher.

Huawei FreeBuds 3 In-Depth Review: Bluetooth 5.1 and Noise-Canceling ANC

A full charge of the earbuds through the Type-C port will be about 1 hour. Also, in the charging case, there is 2W wireless charging – the charging time will be 3 times longer.

Huawei FreeBuds 3: Conclusions and Reviews

The new generation of Huawei FreeBuds 3 has both strengths and weaknesses. I did not want to criticize much the third generation wireless earbuds in the FreeBuds line, but there are some minor disadvantages.

Huawei FreeBuds 3 In-Depth Review: Bluetooth 5.1 and Noise-Canceling ANC

The sound quality is not the highest when compared with competitors, but maybe – it concerns the design since there are sound losses. My preference is for the silicone earpads that can be matched to your ear canal.

Another disadvantage is not a high battery life – about 4 hours at a 70% volume level and this is not the best indicator.

The build quality and materials are at a decent level, all the elements are selected qualitatively and I did not notice any issues during testing.

Huawei FreeBuds 3 In-Depth Review: Bluetooth 5.1 and Noise-Canceling ANC

I really liked the active noise canceling the operation in the automatic mode and the activation of this ANC function, the sound becomes denser and more saturated.

Functional touch control and settings through the mobile application will allow you to manage any gestures as you wish.

I also liked the quick charge via Type-C port and the presence of wireless charging.

Huawei FreeBuds 3: Price and Where to buy cheaper?

Now you can buy Huawei FreeBuds 3 wireless open-fit earbuds at an interesting price for just $209.18 with a 20% discount.

Of course, the price is not the smallest, but I think there will be full-fledged fans of Huawei who want to buy a new generation of earbuds.
