Today we have the Elephone A5 in our review with good workmanship, a quick fingerprint sensor and good picture result in sufficient light conditions. What the device still achieves and where the weaknesses lie, reveals the test.
The Elephone A5 is a mid-range smartphone – nothing more, nothing less.
It is available in Twilight at a suggested retail price of $199. In the test, you will read what the smartphone does.

Elephone A5: Design and Appearance
The design of the Elephone A5 is nothing out of the ordinary today.
If you still want to find something special, you will notice that unlike many other smartphones 2018 – no matter if entry-level, middle or upper class – it has a display notch and three camera sensors on the rear panel.
With dimensions of 155.0 mm x 75.5 mm x 8.1 mm, Elephone A5 in the test feels good in the hand and with 200 grams, it is also pleasantly light and also perfectly processed.
I would also like to point to the convenient location of the scanner fingerprints on the side.
The display measures 6.18 inches and resolves in Full HD + (2246 x 1080 pixels) at a pixel density of 403 ppi. That’s enough for everyday use.
The display brightness measured of Elephone A5 in our analisis method is 356 cd/m². The display could be a bit brighter, especially in bright environments, but that’s not a bad value for the price range. In comparison, even the OnePlus 6T “only” comes to 443 cd/m².
Due to the rather wide margins above and below, the impression, which is expected by 6.18 inches, in the practice somewhat clouded.
Added to this are the virtual function keys, such as the home button, the backspace key and the multitask key.
This is not dramatic on the home screen because there is no background, but as apps are opened, the buttons are highlighted with a light bar, which shrinks the usable area of the display.
When using apps in full-screen mode of Elephone A5, such as when watching videos on YouTube, the function keys are automatically hidden.
Elephone A5: Hardware and Performance
The Elephone A5 in our test is powered by the eight-core processor Helio P60 from MediaTek with 8 x 1.8 GHz. Added to this are 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage capacity.
The internal memory does not sound quite up-to-date anymore, but given the possibility of expansion by up to 512 GB, this is manageable for everyday use.
Surfing, opening apps and scrolling through the menu, the Elephone A5 presents no insurmountable challenge.
Micro-glitches when scrolling websites with a lot of visual material were not to be overlooked in the test.
For complex applications such as games, the Elephone A5 can partially keep up. We tried PUBG Mobile and Asphalt 9: Legends.
The predefined graphics setting for PUBG Mobile was set to Medium.
The online game is absolutely playable and ran smoothly. In a test match (about 10 minutes), no significant image printers appeared.
A test round of Asphalt 9: Legends was acceptable. It did not run quite smoothly, however, distant objects are also slightly pixelated.
Elephone A5: Operating system and Software
As the operating system, Android 8.1 Oreo runs in the stripped-down version Android One.
An update to Android Pie has already been announced but without a specific date. The amount of pre-installed apps is limited and should be considered positive.
Elephone A5: Camera
On the back of the case is a triple camera consisting of a 12-, 5- and a 0.3-megapixel sensor (aperture: f/2.0).
The selfie camera of Elephone A5 has the dual camera with 20- and 2-megapixel sensor (aperture: f/2.2). The main camera only looks slightly out of the case.
Under good lighting conditions, the camera delivers a surprisingly good result. This is not self-evident for the middle-class segment.
In particular, the colors of the test rose are strong and natural. Around the petals is only occasionally a light, black edge to see. That does not often look different even in the high-end class.
Also striking are the flower stems. These can be very well differentiated when zooming in from each other. The leaves show their natural green.
When zooming in, the presentation of Elephone A5 is a bit out of focus. But that is not dramatic and – if anything – criticism at a high level.
The coarse grain of the white background wallpaper is very easy to recognize and not too soft. The individual corners are also very well lit and the grit loses little of its structure.
The individual color squares lose some of their full colors when zooming in. The yellow and purple square are a bit too gaudy. Overall, the edges show a light, black frame. That is still acceptable.
If the light conditions deteriorate, the result of the image quality also drops rapidly. The picture is out of focus, details are no longer recognizable.
The colors of the squares can only be guessed at except for the bright, like the yellow ones.
When looking at the results of the selfie camera, a similar picture is displayed as with the main camera. In good lighting conditions, the selfie camera can score with a natural appearance.
This applies to the brown hair and the colors of the colorful kerchief. The complexion also looks pretty natural. The bulk of the grainy background, however, is too soft.
The result in low light conditions is simply underground. It can just be seen a slightly illuminated face, but the overall presentation is very blurred and too dark.
Elephone A5: Connectivity and sensors
WLAN ac and the frequencies 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, as well as Bluetooth 4.2, are supported. Unfortunately, what is missing is NFC support.
The Elephone A5 in the analisis has a dual-SIM feature. Instead of a second Nano-SIM card but can insert a microSD card. Nice is a USB Type-C connector, but “only” 2.1.
Ultimately, it’s a matter of taste: for some, it is still a cherished feature to use cable headphones, the other it simply does not matter, because they rely exclusively on wireless connectivity such as Bluetooth. In principle, the Elephone A5 thanks to the existing latch both.
The Elephone A5 does not have facial recognition as the screen’s unlock method. But for a reliable and fast fingerprint sensor. The decor worked quickly and easily.
The fingerprint module is placed at the side underneath the power and volume buttons. The position is good, often the sensors are a bit too high.
Aborts in the WLAN connection or in the mobile network did not exist during the test. The compounds were always stable.
The call quality with phone calls could be something better. Although we did not have any problems understanding the other person (and vice versa), the sound was slightly unclear, especially at higher volumes.
In busy areas, the overall volume might be a bit too low. When using the speaker, the same symptoms of a somewhat unclear conversation quality show up.
The sound when streaming (music) videos were acceptable. For radio listening without external speakers, the quality is quite enough.
Elephone A5: Battery
The battery capacity is 4000 mAh. In our test of Elephone A5 procedure, the energy storage lasted about 9 hours.
That’s really intoxicating. Even average users should not be prepared to use the charging cable or a power bank, depending on the situation.
Elephone A5: Conclusions and Reviews
The Elephone A5 is a mid-range smartphone that is very well made and works well for everyday use.
But even for one or the other elaborate game, it is not unsuitable and does its job.
Impressive is the photo quality of the main camera insufficient light conditions in the price range of about $200 to recommended retail price.
In the dark, however, the weaknesses of the camera system come to light. This also applies to the selfie camera in similar lighting conditions.
As a positive note, the good speed of the fingerprint sensor.
The build quality and the materials themselves are at a good level; in general, this is a well-built phone with interesting color and design.
