For some time now I am looking for a new camera solution. Here in the blog, I told you about it and today’s gadget called DJI OSMO Mobile 2 second generation is part of my review and tests.

So, of course, I wanted something mobile, which also finds the place in my little bag place. Since the delivery was delayed slightly, I helped in the meantime with a GearBest.

DJI OSMO Mobile 2: Packaging

When my package was delivered by box, I’m a little scared. The gimbal is much bigger than expected. Honestly, I was also aware that I was not too much prepared for it, I wanted to approach the test unbiased. Again, the weight of DJI OSMO Mobile 2 was very positive.

But let’s come to the package itself and open it. Packaged is the gadget, as usual at DJI, perfect. The box is beautifully designed, reveals a few important details but above all leaves much room for anticipation. The outer shell removed, a black box comes out. This unfolded is already noticeable that the lid is a bit thicker, we’ll come to that soon.

Down in the box, the Osmo mobile 2 is nicely embedded. Above it lies a thick bundle of paper – instruction manual etc. Hidden under a black cardboard box you will find the battery, the USB-to-jack cable, a wrist strap and a cap.

DJI OSMO Mobile 2: Design and Appearance

At the gimbal DJI OSMO Mobile 2 in our analisis, let’s start at the bottom of the handle. This is also the part of the gadget you come in contact with most.

Compared to the upper part, the handle is quite light and made of plastic. This seems a bit “cheaper” at first, but it certainly made a compromise between the choice of material and the total weight of the Osmo mobile 2 in the test.

The back is made of a matte, smooth plastic and on the side that looks to you is a rubber-coated layer of silicone. This gives the handle a slight grip.

At the bottom of a lid is installed, which can be similar to an SLR camera via a slide control open.

At the top of the handle, do you find all the controls? There are five in number. The most important thing for the start is certainly the slider on the right side over which the second generation Osmo mobile 2 on or off again.

At the back is a generous button with three functions. At the front, you will find the last three possibilities.

The largest, on the left side, is a joystick, as you know it from the Nintendo 3DS, at least from the basic principle. With the button in the middle you trigger a photo and the right, with the red dot in the middle, should be self-explanatory.

This, of course, works only if you also use the matching DJI Mobile App – more about the app below in the appropriate chapter.

Visually, you still get feedback via the two LEDs above the joystick. On the right the general “I am on” or not. The left LED will show you when you are filming.

Now we come to the actual Magic of DJI OSMO Mobile 2: that’s the three-axis gimbal. Directly above the controls, you will find the first small engine installed.

With this, your smartphone moves horizontally. After a little over 90 degrees angle, it goes into the second engine and from there again at a 90-degree angle in the last engine of the smartphone itself keeps on course.

It’s best to look at the pictures, that explains the whole thing a bit better than my words.

The smartphone itself puts her in a well-padded holder. All you have to do is turn the well-knurled knob on the back of the holder.

Also on the side, where the smartphone will touch the gimbal, a silicone protection is installed.

So you do not have to be afraid of scratches and the like when you stretch your beloved smartphone in the DJI OSMO Mobile 2.

Also, the bracket itself is very stable and thanks to the materials used, I’m not afraid that could solve something there.

Put the smartphone in the holder, turn the screw and then it’s time to put the “display” in the balance.

You can use – according to the DJI website – Smartphones in a display size of 58.6 to 85mm. On the Apple, since that works thus with the iPhone SE, the iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus and Oneplus 5 and 5T.

If you are in possession of an Android smartphone, you can use the popular smartphones, with the phablets it is then more difficult since most start at 5.7 inches.

Before buying from Osmo mobile 2 in our review, you should, of course, look at what you currently have and, if possible, what you want to buy next to a model.

Once you have the smartphone in a quiet, horizontal position, you can push the one-shift control down.

The best way to do this is to have the gimbal stand on a tabletop or something similarly flat. Then the best calibration is best.

But you have to install the app, but there it goes immediately after the battery.

DJI OSMO Mobile 2: Battery

As mentioned above, the battery is inserted below. DJI OSMO Mobile 2 uses a 2600mAh battery.

To recharge the battery, there is, unfortunately, no charging station, this you have to put the above already mentioned several times USB- to jack cable.

You will surely notice, I am still a little confused. My last gadget, which I had powered by jack, was the second Withings activity harvester.

Right at the beginning, the gadget, like every new one, belongs to a power source. A complete charge of the battery takes about three hours.

Then you have about four hours of pleasure filming until you have to plug back into the socket.

Or you install a second separately purchased battery. Right here comes the crux of the gadget: Suppose you go on a trip tomorrow and want to film there.

You don’t have bought two or even three batteries for the cool gimbal, so you can charge overnight, without your presence, after six hours you have to decouple the cable, replace the battery and depending on the number of batteries the same game again three Hours later.

Yes, I know, luxury problem, or maybe enough for the average filmmaker also the approximately four hours, which indicates the manufacturer in use.

DJI OSMO Mobile 2: App

After attaching the smartphone to the gimbal you first need to connect the gadget DJI OSMO Mobile 2 to your app.

The initial link happens directly via Bluetooth LE (Low Energy 4.0). Above that, the gadget keeps contact with the smartphone of your choice later on.

If you want to take pictures or videos, you can use the app of your choice, but if you want to use the full range of features and want to have the control of the handle, then you should put on the DJI own app.

This impresses not only by the link with the app but also by numerous additional functions.

DJI OSMO Mobile 2: Functions and Features

A feature that DJI drone pilots already know is the active tracking feature. You can mark a person, an animal, or an object to whom you would like to dedicate the film, and then the app will always keep track of it. The cool, the DJI OSMO Mobile 2 can keep quiet and the engines do all the work for you.

Another feature can be found in movie mode. Since you can create a panoramic photo. In addition, the gadget moves around 330° and takes in up to nine pictures a comprehensive panoramic photo of your surroundings.

Quite cool, of course, are the panning (motion time-lapse). For this, you give a start point and an end point, quasi a swivel through the landscape from bottom left to top right. You can define in detail how many pictures are taken per second et cetera. It should be clear that you should keep the DJI OSMO Mobile 2 in our analisis very calm. It is best to mount it on a tripod, where it can not wobble.

You can find more features if you play around with the app. What quickly stands out, the app means well with your battery, because it consumes diligently.

Here I wished a recess at the attitude for a current supply of cables. Something I do not really like is that the app retains the pictures and videos for the time being.

Unfortunately, there is no direct export to the smartphone own photo app. Means after filming you have to export the results first.

The whole DJI OSMO Mobile 2 could correct in one of the next app updates, so not a real negative point.

DJI OSMO Mobile 2: Live stream

If you make live streams with your smartphone you will certainly enjoy the integration into the different services. In addition to YouTube integration, these include Facebook Live, Weibo, CQ zones and RTMP.

Beautifully implemented is the change from selfie to the rear camera. All you have to do is press the big button on the front three times in quick succession. You should practice that a little, that you do not wobble too much. Of course, the gimbal catches that movement a bit, but the simpler is always better.

DJI OSMO Mobile 2: Conclusions and Reviews

Current smartphones, such as a Samsung Galaxy S8, a Huawei P10 or the new iPhone models all have something in common.

The built-in cameras – are really great for their compact design. Therefore, you can use them for smaller film stuff without much preparation.

Most models also have an optical image stabilizer integrated. That means, even the hardware can catch some wobbly or fast movements.

In addition, comes the camera software, which obstructs the three manufacturers. This again catches a lot.

If you are walking slowly, or have a quiet, slightly faster walk, you will not notice too much difference. The statement applies to shots in daylight.

As soon as the lighting conditions worsen, the support of the gimbal becomes much more visible.

But if you want to take action-heavy shots, move quickly from left to right, etc., or track an object, then the OSMO Mobile 2 shows all its magic.
