The manufacturer took a serious step and made a very strange decision as for the front camera, which is located on the side waterdrop notch on the front panel.

In addition, following the name Cubot MAX 2 received a huge 6.8-inch screen with HD resolution, Mediatek Helio P22 processor, 4 and 64 GB memory version, Android 9.0 and 5000 mAh battery capacity.

I advise you to read our detailed review of Cubot MAX 2 before buying a phone.

Cubot MAX 2: Unboxing

We have received the phone the on the test in a black square box, on the front side the name of the model is indicated in gold letters.

Cubot MAX 2 Review: Side Waterdrop Notch and Sony IMX486

On the back side of the box, there are the main specs of the MAX 2.

Cubot MAX 2 Review: Side Waterdrop Notch and Sony IMX486

Inside the box, we saw the phone itself in a protective film on the front panel and a silicone transparent cover on the back panel.

There was also a thank-you card for the purchase, a Type-C charging cable, a power adapter, a needle for a SIM card tray, and a user manual in English.

Cubot MAX 2 Review: Side Waterdrop Notch and Sony IMX486

Again, if you compare past models, the package has not changed almost. But I was pleased with the protective case, which was already darker in color, although it was also transparent.

Cubot MAX 2 Review: Side Waterdrop Notch and Sony IMX486

In general, for its price of $ 145 has good equipment. Now I would like to talk about the quality of the assembly and materials.

Cubot MAX 2: Design and Appearance

The first thing that catches your eye is the location of the side waterdrop notch for the front camera.

Cubot MAX 2 Review: Side Waterdrop Notch and Sony IMX486

From this point, I would like to start looking at Cubot MAX 2, since it is almost the main feature of the phone. The company took great risks with such a decision, so it’s hard to say whether it’s beautiful or not.

As for me, this waterdrop notch on the side looks insanely bad, but people have different tastes, so I will not judge, it’s up to you to decide.

Cubot MAX 2 Review: Side Waterdrop Notch and Sony IMX486

It is also worth noting that this is a phablet with a 6.8-inch screen is not a small smartphone with a 6.0-inch resolution. In the hands of Cubot MAX 2 is good, but will only use with two hands.

The dimensions and weight of the phone MAX 2 corresponds to its screen size and battery capacity are 173.1 x 81.5 x 9.0 mm and 180 grams.

Cubot MAX 2 Review: Side Waterdrop Notch and Sony IMX486

The quality of assembly and materials of Cubot MAX 2 is at a good level in our test, and it is difficult to find fault with it. The rear plastic panel fits well and I did not find extraneous squeaks.

Cubot MAX 2 Review: Side Waterdrop Notch and Sony IMX486

On the back, you can see a dual camera with flash and a fingerprint scanner. It is also worth noting about the presence of two colors are Twilight and Black. As for me, the Twilight model looks prettier and more modern.

On the right side of the phone Cubot MAX 2 is located the volume rocker and the power button. The control buttons are located in the right and convenient place with a responsive touch.

On the left side of the device, there is a hybrid slot for dual SIM cards or one SIM and microSD memory card.

Cubot MAX 2 Review: Side Waterdrop Notch and Sony IMX486

At the bottom of the phone MAX 2, we see a speaker, microphone and Type-C connector for fast charging.

On the top of the Cubot MAX 2, you can see a 3.5 mm jack for your headphones.

In general, the design of Cubot MAX 2 is made at a good level in our analisis. As materials and assembly, I have no complaints. But the question with a neat notch for the front camera may scare the customer when buying. Let’s talk about the quality of the screen in MAX 2.

Cubot MAX 2: Display

Cubot MAX 2 has a modern screen with a large area covering the screen on the front panel of about 81%. The screen frames are not the smallest, and as I already said, it has a side waterdrop notch in the upper right corner for the front camera.

Cubot MAX 2 Review: Side Waterdrop Notch and Sony IMX486

Cubot MAX 2 screen size is 6.8 inches with a resolution of 1352 x 640 pixels. With such a large screen HD resolution will be missed. But if you do not look closely, then the pixels are not visible.

Cubot MAX 2 Review: Side Waterdrop Notch and Sony IMX486

The display is built on IPS technology with an aspect ratio of 19: 9. Also, the manufacturer indicates the protection of the front panel from scratches Corning Gorilla Glass 5.

Cubot MAX 2 Review: Side Waterdrop Notch and Sony IMX486

The screen has good contrast and natural colors. It’s hard to find the best screen for your money, but again HD resolution is not enough, especially for such a huge screen.

Cubot MAX 2: Hardware and Performance

Cubot MAX 2 in the test is in the budget category of smartphones and should not expect great results from the performance.

Cubot MAX 2 Review: Side Waterdrop Notch and Sony IMX486

One of the latest versions of the MediaTek Helio A22 processor with an IMG PowerVR graphics processor was installed on MAX 2. The same processor is used in such smartphones as Xiaomi Redmi 6A, Elephone A6 Mini, Doogee Y8 Plus and many other models.

Cubot MAX 2 Review: Side Waterdrop Notch and Sony IMX486

The Cubot MAX 2 smartphone was installed 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal memory. About 55GB of real memory comes out, but if this memory is not enough for you, you can increase it with a microSD memory card up to 128GB.

Cubot MAX 2 Review: Side Waterdrop Notch and Sony IMX486

This phone is more suitable for surfing the Internet or social networks, for watching movies or videos on Youtube. With a large screen, using the phone as multimedia would be a good pleasure.

Cubot MAX 2 Review: Side Waterdrop Notch and Sony IMX486

As for gaming performance, Cubot MAX 2 copes well in the analisis. You can run and play PUBG Mobile but at the low settings. You will not get a smooth game, but it is possible to play. The lighter games run easily and without any problems.

Cubot MAX 2: Software

The new generation of Cubot MAX 2 has received a clean version of the Android operating system version 9.0. Chinese applications or other malicious programs are missing.

Cubot MAX 2 Review: Side Waterdrop Notch and Sony IMX486

In the MAX 2 user interface, the application package from Google is already installed. Therefore, the Play Store, Youtube, Maps and other applications are already installed on the device.

Additional features such as gestures or other features work without any comments. During our testing, we did not find any delays or problems in the user interface of Cubot MAX 2.

Cubot MAX 2 Review: Side Waterdrop Notch and Sony IMX486

I would like to note about the work of the fingerprint scanner, which works well and the response is almost lightning in a fraction of a hundredth of a second.

Also on Cubot MAX 2, there is the ability to unlock on the face through the front camera. In general, it works well, but only with good lighting.

But the main problem of cheap Chinese smartphones is the lack of constant updating of the operating system. Most likely, Cubot MAX 2 will not receive updates on Android 9.1 or higher versions.

Cubot MAX 2: Sound and Communication

The main speaker of the Cubot MAX 2 sounds at a good volume, but noise is heard at maximum volume. Since this is a budget smartphone, one should not expect strong bass. When using headphones, the sound changes for the better with more correct frequencies.

Cubot MAX 2 Review: Side Waterdrop Notch and Sony IMX486

During the testing of Cubot MAX 2 communications, the interlocutors heard me well and without any interference.

Cubot MAX 2 is also present with a B20 module with a range of 800 Hz, so a 4G signal will be provided in many countries. Cubot was pleased with its high-quality connection, which is difficult to say about some Chinese smartphones, for example, Xiaomi.

Cubot MAX 2 Review: Side Waterdrop Notch and Sony IMX486

Working with Wifi and GPS with MAX 2 did not lead me to disappointment. The download and shipping speeds are good, and the GPS signal was found instantly with an accuracy of 4-5 meters.

Cubot MAX 2: Camera

Cubot uses a dual sensor on the back panel, like almost any modern manufacturer. The main sensor on the Cubot MAX 2 is a 12-megapixel camera from Sony IMX486 with f/2.2 aperture, and the second is a 2-megapixel camera.

Cubot MAX 2 Review: Side Waterdrop Notch and Sony IMX486

But to the great disappointment, the second sensor of the camera is just a fake. Therefore, it is difficult to expect high-quality photos with a blurred background.

Cubot MAX 2 Review: Side Waterdrop Notch and Sony IMX486

At the beginning of the review of Cubot MAX 2, I was poorly tuned for the quality of the photos, but I want to tell you that photos in the daytime or with good lighting are pretty nice. As practice shows, now almost all budget phones take pictures well in the daytime.

Here at night or with poor lighting photos get worse instantly. Therefore, to make high-quality photos on Cubot MAX 2 at night will be problematic.

Cubot MAX 2 Review: Side Waterdrop Notch and Sony IMX486

Also worth noting, the 8-megapixel front-facing camera showed itself on the positive side. Like the main camera, daytime photos will be good with the right color and contrast. But at night, the quality of photos deteriorates and there are big noises.

Cubot MAX 2 can shoot video in .mp4 format with Full HD resolution. Also in the settings, you can set the stabilization, so the picture in the video will be smooth and without jumps.

In general, the quality of photos on Cubot MAX 2 is very pleased with the Sony IMX486 sensor in our test. This sensor is used in many smartphones, for examples, such as Asus Zenfone Max Pro M2, Xiaomi Mi A2, Redmi Note 6 Pro, and many other models.

Cubot MAX 2: Battery

On the one hand, Cubot MAX 2 has a large battery capacity of 5000 mAh. But the smartphone is not installed a small screen, there are 6.8 inches and it should be fed with energy. Although the plus will be the presence of HD resolution, which consequently will lead to less consumption on the screen.

Cubot MAX 2 Review: Side Waterdrop Notch and Sony IMX486

Therefore, in the real world, a Cubot MAX 2 phone on a combined cycle can last from 1.5 to 2 days of work without recharging. The battery life of the screen on time is about 5.5 hours.

A full charge on the MAX 2 takes about 2.5 hours. Although the phone is equipped with a Type-C connector, the power supply comes with only 5V and 2A.

Cubot MAX 2: Conclusions and Reviews

Undoubtedly, Cubot MAX 2 turned out to be an interesting smartphone with its own special design. I’m talking about the side waterdrop notch for the front camera, which I see for the first time on only this phone model.

Cubot MAX 2 Review: Side Waterdrop Notch and Sony IMX486

On the positive side, I would like to say that the performance of Cubot MAX 2 has good performance for its price. Helio A22 provides stable operation and 4GB of RAM perform their multitasking. The quality of the camera in Cubot MAX 2 is at a good level, and the photos in the daytime are no worse than those of the Xiaomi Mi A2.

By cons, I want to take this only HD resolution of the screen, as for a large size of 6.8 inches. Also, a fake second sensor, which is difficult to expect high-quality background blur.

Cubot MAX 2 Review: Side Waterdrop Notch and Sony IMX486

The remaining specifications correspond to their price. The quality of the assembly and materials at a decent level. Autonomy work with an average use of up to two days.

Cubot MAX 2: Price and Where to buy cheaper?

Currently, you can buy a phone at a good and low price for only $149.99 at a 27% discount. GearBest will have a good discount from 1st to 7th Aprile.

As for its price, Cubot MAX 2 meets all expectations, this is a well-built smartphone with good technical specifications.
