Cubot has introduced to the mobile market a new model of a rugged smartphone called Cubot KingKong 5 Pro.
Previously, I already managed to test devices from the Cubot brand in the KingKong line, and if anyone is interested, I will leave a link to the review here. As for the new smartphone model, it received a number of interesting features, both from the technical side and from the outside.
This week I was able to test a smartphone from the manufacturer Oukitel, which has a similar pricing policy. That is, the price tag for the Cubot KingKong 5 Pro smartphone model will cost you only $150. Meanwhile, the Oukitel WP9 smartphone will cost $185.
But from the technical point of view, the device from Cubot received more attractive technical specs than from Oukitel. Therefore, let’s talk a little more about each of them. For example, the smartphone received a slightly larger screen size of 6.088 inches and also with HD+ resolution.
In addition, the smartphone has a MediaTek Helio P22 processor with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal memory. Naturally, the rugged device received full protection against water, dust, and drops under the IP68 standard. The device had a built-in 8000mAh battery, the same battery capacity as on the WP9.
I talked about the main features, but the KingKong 5 Pro smartphone has many other features. Therefore, if you want to know everything about the device, then I suggest starting your in-depth and detailed review.

Unboxing and packaging
The packaging was made of black cardboard, with a picture of a secure KingKong 5 Pro smartphone with the name on the front. But on the opposite side, there is a list of the main technical features. For example, here you can find information about the processor, screen size, camera, and more.
Inside the package itself, I found it directly, the smartphone itself with a protective transport film. I also found a lot of interesting accessories. These are wired headphones with Type-C output, Type-C format charging cable, 15W power adapter, and instructions for use.
In general, the equipment is very similar, to the WP9 from Oukitel. Only the presence of wired headphones from the manufacturer Cubot will be a bonus. Ok, now let’s talk about the quality of workmanship and other elements of the appearance.
Design, build quality and materials
Since Cubot KingKong 5 Pro is a fully rugged smartphone, I planned to start my story in the design section with dimensions and weight. For example, the new smartphone model received the following dimensions: 165.7 x 81.4 x 18.7 mm, and the weight was about 308 grams. For comparison, the dimensions of the WP9 were slightly less than 156 x 76.9 x 19.5 mm but weighed more than 320 grams.
It is not surprising that controlling a smartphone with one hand will be problematic not only for girls but also for big uncles. Therefore, it will take a while to get used to the control. But the main advantage of the device is full and complete protection from the outside world.
The KingKong 5 Pro smartphone model is capable of surviving a fall of 1.5 meters and submersion underwater up to 1.5 meters for 30 minutes. Also, the smartphone is not afraid of dust, dirt, and other adverse influences. Thus, if you are looking for an inexpensive, but well-protected smartphone, then perhaps the new model from the Cubot brand will be a good choice.
If we talk about the build quality, then I did not reveal any special complaints during my testing. There are no extraneous squeaks and sounds at all. In addition, the smartphone is assembled from high-quality materials. There is a combination of aluminum, rubber, and heat-resistant plastic. That is, the edges of the smartphone were well designed and protected by rubber elements from falls or other troubles.
The back of the device has received very interesting shapes in design, which greatly rejuvenates the smartphone. At first glance, a smartphone resembles a gaming device, but when you pick it up you immediately forget that it could be a gaming smartphone. Also in the upper left corner is a module of triple cameras and an LED flash.
In addition, I want to note that the camera module does not have a protrusion and this will further protect the smartphone during accidental falls. The back of the smartphone also has two speakers at the top and bottom. That is, the sound here is stereo, but I can’t call the sound quality. For example, a device from the brands Redmi or Poco has an order of magnitude better sound quality.
On the bottom end of the KingKong 5 Pro smartphone case, you can see a plug under which a Type-C charging connector is hidden. On the left side of the device, there is another plug for the hybrid SIM tray. There is also a volume rocker on the left side.
But on the right side of the smartphone, there is a power button, a separate sensor for a fingerprint scanner, and another additional button for various tasks. The last button can be programmed for any quick access function and in fact, it will be useful in practice.
Also, the operation of the fingerprint scanner did not cause me strong complaints or problems. Okay, I figured out the appearance and build quality, now let’s talk about the quality of the screen and its features.
Screen and image quality
The front side of the Cubot KingKong 5 Pro smartphone was protected by a protective Corning Gorilla Glass 3. But the manufacturer also glued a protective film out of the box. At the same time, I advise you to immediately glue a protective glass for greater safety, since I think that with it the smartphone will be much more reliable.
The screen size was 6.088 inches and received a resolution of 1560 x 720 pixels. Yes, the screen may not stand out with a high resolution, but I can say that it was comfortable to use it during the entire test.
If we compare the quality of the screen with the smartphone model from Oukitel, which I tested this week, then I will note that there is practically no difference. Still, it is worthwhile to understand that both smartphones are budget and have the appropriate picture quality.
Here I can also highlight such functions of screen settings as night mode, in which the screen becomes completely black and white. There is also a night illumination mode. This mode adds yellow and removes blue, which is good for the eyes, especially before bed. Other than that, I found the dark theme feature and it will probably be useful for most users.
Performance, benchmarks, games, and OS
A MediaTek Helio P22 processor was installed inside the case of the rugged KingKong 5 Pro smartphone. This is an ultra-budget chipset that is also not the newest in its class. For example, it first appeared in the world back in May 2018, it is already three years old. It is based on eight Cortex-A53 cores with a maximum clock speed of 2.0 GHz.
It is also worth mentioning that the Helio P22 processor was built using 12-nanometer technology. I think you will be interested to know the real performance of the device, so in the album below I will leave a few tests of various benchmarks. For example, the device scored about 96 thousand points in the AntuTu test. At the same time, there was no overheating during the test at all and the temperature was within 28 degrees Celsius.
If we compare the performance between the KingKong 5 Pro and Oukitel WP9 smartphones, then the last version will have much better performance. Since the Mediatek Helio P60 processor is gaining about 186 thousand points in the AntuTu test.
Gaming abilities also did not have a particularly positive effect on the smartphone model from Cubot. Yes, you can play games like PUBG Mobile or Asphalt 9, but the games will take a long time to launch and the graphics will have very weak settings. In addition, in heavy games, freezes and small delays will often be observed.
In terms of internal memory, the KingKong 5 Pro smartphone uses 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal memory. You can also expand your storage space with a microSD memory slot up to 256GB.
I did not identify any problems with the connection quality, the device always had a stable 4G signal. Also, I did not have any particular difficulties with the dual-band Wi-Fi module, Bluetooth 5.0 version, and the quality of the GPS signal was just accurate and fast. Another interesting feature is the presence of an NFC module for contactless payment.
Ok, now is the time to talk about the operating system. Protected smartphone Cubot KingKong 5 Pro is controlled by the Android 11 version. This, of course, is a slightly newer version of the OS than the WP9 model, and this may not please me. The user interface has received a standard shell, like most smartphones in this price range.
Also here I can highlight the presence of interesting icons in the settings of the smartphone menu. There are a lot of useful functions, such as gesture control, setting a separate button for its functionality, and much more. In general, the operating system works quite quickly and without any particular complaints.
Camera and sample photos
As I already mentioned, there are three main camera sensors on the back of the rugged KingKong 5 Pro device. This is a 48-megapixel main module from Sony.
It takes pretty good pictures, but only in good lighting. Photos really come out bright and saturated, you can see examples of shots in the album below. But with low light, the quality of photos drops significantly and a high graininess appears.
The second and third camera modules received a resolution of 5 megapixels and 0.3 megapixels, respectively. They were created for macro mode, and the lowest resolution serves as a depth sensor.
At the same time, the selfie camera received a pretty good resolution of 25 megapixels. This is a bit surprising since you rarely find a sensor with a fairly high resolution on a budget rugged device. Again, you can see pictures of examples of the front camera in the album below.
In the settings of the camera application, you can select several modes – this is a photo, video, bokeh, macro, night, 48 MP, and much more. Each of them works pretty well. At the same time, the maximum video resolution for the main camera is capable of shooting at 1080p and 30 frames per second. And on the front camera only 720p and also 30 frames per second.
Battery and run time
The battery capacity of the rugged smartphone KingKong 5 Pro was exactly the same as on the WP9 model, that is, it is 8000 mAh.
The battery life of the device from 100% to 0% was about 15 hours when watching a video on YouTube with a screen brightness of 80%. This is a pretty solid result and this battery capacity will last for up to three working days in daily use. In general, the battery life of the smartphone from Cubot had similar indicators as that of the smartphone from the Oukitel brand.
But the charging time for the KingKong 5 Pro model will not be so fast, since only a 15W power adapter is included in the kit. And with it you can charge your device in 4 hours and 20 minutes. That’s quite a long time, in comparison the WP9 had a 24W adapter and took 3 hours to charge. But one thing is good that a smartphone from the Cubot brand can be used as a power bank.
Conclusion, reviews, pros, and cons
Full testing of the rugged Cubot KingKong 5 Pro smartphone has shown itself, both positively and negatively.
Therefore, let’s talk first about the positive aspects, and then about the disadvantages. The first thing I liked about the rugged smartphone was, of course, its build quality and the materials used. Also, the device received a good 48-megapixel camera, which takes pretty good pictures, but only in good lighting.
I also liked the presence of the latest version of the operating system and of course the battery life.
If we talk about the shortcomings, then I can refer to them – this is not the highest performance, long charging time, large dimensions, and weight of the device.
Price and where to buy cheaper?
If you are interested in the new model of the rugged smartphone Cubot KingKong 5 Pro, then the price tag for the device is currently only $149.99 with a 40% discount.
Thus, if you do not need high performance and you are not embarrassed by a long charging time, then a smartphone from Cubot is definitely worth your attention.
