Can a cheap smartphone be good? The company Cubot always pleases us with good and reliable smartphones, such as Cubot X19, X18, and other models. Today I would like to talk about a budget model called Cubot J5 in our review.
What about $70? Here’s how much is the new model of smartphone J5.
For this money you get the following features – 5.5-inch display with FW + resolution, 2800 mAh battery, face recognition, a slot with two SIM-cards and microSD memory, FM-radio, a case with a gradient, the latest version of the Android 9.0 operating system and other.
I invite you to a review of the Cubot J5 smartphone. Let’s start by unpacking.

Cubot J5: Unboxing
I received standard black packaging, like other Cubot phone models. On the front, I see the name J5, and on the back side – the technical specifications.
Inside the box is a smartphone in a protective film and silicone case. Below is the warranty, instruction, micro USB charging cable and power adapter 5V and 1A.
I was a little surprised that there is a silicone case included since the price of the Cubot J5 is very small. Well, with a complete package finished, what would we expect with ergonomics?
Cubot J5: Design and Appearance
At this level of price in the new Cubot J5 smartphone in our test, we still have to be ready for the plastic case. The rear and side edges of the J5 are made of plastic and covered with a layer of varnish.
The back of the case in the test version is multicolored. The gradient runs from turquoise below, through the blue in the middle, to purple at the top, but the colors change depending on the angle of incidence of the light. In my opinion, the body looks good and during the tests, I met with overwhelmingly positive reactions to the appearance of this smartphone. The smartphone can also be bought in black and blue.
The only problem is that the plastic panel is not very scratch resistant. But the kit already has a protective case.
The dimensions of the device are 150.3 x 72 x 9.2 mm and weight – 173 grams. In the hand, the smartphone is very good and you can easily manage with one hand.
Fortunately, the display is protected by a film from the factory. The screen size, by modern standards, is only 5.5 inches compact.
The case is not very thin (9.2 mm thick), even it uses a battery with a capacity of only 2800 mAh.
The main camera has one 8-megapixel sensor. LED is installed under it.
For such a price, expect a fingerprint scanner is not worth it. But you have the ability to unlock the screen through face recognition.
As it is an ultra-budget phone, the rear plastic panel is removable. Behind it, you can see a slot for two nano SIM cards and a microSD memory card.
On the right side, you will find a rocker for volume control and a power button.
At the top, you will find the classic 3.5 mm headphone jack. The sound quality in the headphones is good.
Unfortunately, I can not write the same thing about the dynamics, located on the bottom edge. You can really hear the “cheapness” here. The sound is flat and deaf. Even the volume is below average. Yes, the characteristics are enough for ringtones, but the sound in games and movies is not the biggest advantage of this smartphone.
In addition to the loudspeaker, there is a microphone at the bottom for phone conversations (its quality is good) and a micro USB port.
The design of the Cubot J5 smartphone is classic in our analisis, the quality of materials corresponds to the price, the same applies to the assembly. Here you will not find a model with three sensors on the rear panel or a waterdrop notch on the front panel, as was the case with the Ulefone Note 7. Therefore, if you want a modern look, then pay attention to the budget model from Ulefone.
Cubot J5: Screen
The Cubot J5 uses a 5.5-inch screen with a resolution of 960 x 480 pixels. At first pixel density seems small, but if you look at the text and the icons, they are clearly and clearly visible.
The screen has an expanded aspect ratio of 18: 9 and a slightly reduced frame at the top and bottom (without a notch). The colors and contrast are natural and pleasing to the eye. At this price, I have no serious objections to the display.
The only minor drawback is the high minimum brightness level.
But again, the screen on Ulefone Note 7 is larger and has HD + resolution. Therefore, only you choose, but I would prefer the Ulefone screen, although Cubot also has a good screen for its price.
Cubot J5: Performance
Similarly, the Cubot J5 uses the same processor as the Ulefone Note 7. MediaTek MT6580 processor, which was introduced in 2015, but is still being used for ultra-budget smartphones.
In addition, the model J5 onboard 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal memory. You can also use a memory card up to 128GB.
Popular applications and games work on it quite well, but I’m talking about easy and simple games. In combination with the almost pure Android, the convenience of everyday use of this smartphone is better than that of other competitors.
Look at the results of the Cubot J5 phone in the ranking of smartphones and compare with other models.
In general, great performance should not be expected, since the characteristics and tests speak for themselves. But if you want to play simple games, then it is quite possible.
Cubot J5: Software
Another advantage of the Cubot J5 smartphone is its operating system. Here the manufacturer did not use any overlays, so we are dealing with pure Android 9.0. It is rare to find such smartphones for about $70.
For most people, the difference in speed between Cubot J5 and Xiaomi Mi A2 Lite will be insignificant.
Pure Android combined with 2 GB of RAM offers a surprisingly good speed of action compared to other smartphones for about $70.
Of course, the speed of work is not lightning-like on the flagship devices, but for everyday tasks, it will be enough.
Since the phone has almost clean software, in which we will not find many additional applications and unique functions. For many people, this is a great advantage, because if they like minimalism and fast action. However, if someone needs more programs and functions, they can be easily downloaded from the market playlist.
Face unlocking works quickly during the day and even at night due to the possibility of highlighting the face using the display. It is worth remembering that this authentication method is performed by the front camera, rather than an advanced scanner, so it is much less secure.
In addition, the system also has an FM radio, an updated camera, a voice recorder and a fitness app for the Cubot group. The latter requires access to any personal data (for example, telephone, contacts, text messages, etc.). The rest are basic apps from Google.
Cubot J5: Camera
The main camera on the back has a total of the 8-megapixel sensor. Front camera with a 5-megapixel sensor. Therefore, good and high-quality photos should not be expected.
In the daytime, photos turn out unnatural, but it is difficult to judge for such a low price of the device.
Although if you recall the same Ulefone Note 7, it’s quality of photos better than that of Cubot. Despite the fake sensor on the back.
The video shoots with a resolution of 640 x 480 pixels and 30 frames per second in 3GP format.
The camera as for its price does not have good performance when compared with the device from the company Ulefone.
Cubot J5: Battery
Cubot J5 has a fairly low battery capacity of 2800 mAh. Given the small 5.5-inch screen with a small resolution and poor performance, but the battery life is quite acceptable.
In my tests, the smartphone usually worked with a single SIM card and in most cases worked for about 1.5 days with one full charge.
If I had not used the camera and most of the Wi-Fi capabilities, instead of LTE, the Cubot J5 could have worked for up to two days.
The 5W charger included in the package does not have fast charging. The battery charging time will be about 3.0 hours.
Cubot J5: Conclusions and Reviews
We took apart another interesting ultra budget smartphone Cubot J5 in our review. The standard design does not stand out from the crowd, but an elongated screen with an aspect ratio of 18: 9 is used on the front. The top and bottom of the frame are quite large and no notch is used.
The build quality corresponds to the price. Everything is coordinated with high quality and there are no unnecessary squeaks, but plastic materials are very cheap.
The quality of the camera is not high and you do not need to expect good pictures.
The performance performs everyday tasks such as social networks, Instagram, Facebook and even you can play simple games.
Also, the operating system performs a stable job, but with small delays.
Again, comparing Cubot J5 with Ulefone Note 7, which have almost identical prices, in some aspects, Ulefone is far superior to Cubot. For example, modern design, more screen, better camera, and more battery capacity. But Cubot uses 2GB of RAM and the latest pure Android OS 9.0.
Cubot J5: Price and Where to buy cheaper?
Currently, you can order and buy a Cubot J5 smartphone at a low price for only $69.99. I will also leave the price on Ulefone Note 7, who will be interested in following the links below.
