Chuwi Hi9: Packaging and Accessories
The packaging of the Chuwi Hi9 is a yellow box with logo. Accessories include a quick start guide, a sticker, a MicroUSB cable and a Chinese power supply with 5V-3A (adapter CN to EU is included).
Chuwi Hi9: Design and Appearance
The Chuwi Hi9 in our test comes in a standard, so I call it, standard tablet design. The front is completely covered with plastic and the edges are white. The top left is the 2.0 megapixel front camera and the top right is the notification LED.
The back and sides are made of aluminum unibody, which is a bit slippery and scratchy. So here is definitely a case to recommend.
The tablet is only available in this color variant is black. In the middle is the “Chuwi” and below the “Hi9” lettering.
The side buttons for power and the volume rocker are made of metal and have a good pressure point.
Both the 3.5mm jack for headphones and the MicroUSB port are located on the top, which also allows headphone jack and/or charging in a case.
It holder and when the tablet is on its feet. Also, here are slot for MicroSD card.
Chuwi Hi9: Display
The display of the Chuwi Hi9 is 8.4 inches tall and has an IPS panel installed. The tablet has a 2K resolution with 2560 x 1600 pixels. The LCD screen of the Chuwi has good color saturation, black level, and contrast.
With a size of only 8.4 inches with a 2K resolution, the sharpness is very good. Chuwi itself promotes this with a “Vivid Visual Effect”, which should provide for more natural colors and sharper images, especially in videos and games.
Whether this is actually the case or just marketing, is difficult to say, ultimately does not matter, because the colors and sharpness of the tablet are good.
The viewing angle is also fine, but the display glass reflects something that is certainly not a problem in the house, but it’s hard to read outside in the sun.
The 2560 x 1600 pixels give a 16:10 aspect ratio on an 8.4-inch display, giving you more vertical space. This is especially good for surfing and reading documents, etc.
When watching videos, movies, etc., black and white stripes may appear at the top and bottom, depending on how scaled.
Chuwi Hi9: Hardware and Performance
The performance of Chuwi Hi9 features the 1.9GHz Mediatek MTK8173 Quad-core 64-bit processor with PowerVR GX6250 GPU.
The processor is already 2 years old and was introduced in February 2016. Nevertheless, the performance for the 8.4 inch tablet is enough.
The SoC is also installed in Onda V10 Pro. Everything is no longer current models.
The performance of the Mediatek MTK8173 is absolutely sufficient for normal applications and plays everything smoothly again, no matter if games or elaborate apps. Supports the SoC even with 4GB LPDDR3 RAM, which also multi-tasking is no problem.
The benchmark scores are good 69.937 points in AnTuTu and the Geekbench 4 are 1496 SingleCore and 3007 MultiCore points.
The internal eMMC 5.1 memory provides 42MB/s read, 40MB/s write.
In gaming for Asphalt 8 or other high-resolution games, you will notice a slight stutter.
However, most games, such as Modern Combat 5, MMX Racing, Asphalt Airborn 8, The Room Three and Hearthstone are running smoothly.
Chuwi Hi9: Operation and Software
The tablet Chuwi Hi9 in our analisis comes with Android 7.0 Nougat and stockroom-like Android interface.
The language is multilingual and of course also has English to choose from. The tablet is intended primarily for the Chinese market, ergo missing in the factory state again the Play Store and the Play Services.
However, all the services and the Play Store were preinstalled on the Gearbest review unit.
Since the surface is almost Android stock, everyone should be able to find their way quickly. The Chuwi Hi9 full review does not have its own extra features or functions, but is limited to the Android 7.0 standard scope.
The general view and font sizes can be adjusted if desired in the settings. The Stock-Launcher has a normal Appdrawer, if you do not like it you can download any other launcher from the store.
The tablet also supports multitasking, where you can split the screen and use two apps at the same time.
But that counts as standard from Android 7 and is nothing special anymore. The launcher ran in my test, as expected, absolutely smooth and performant.
The tablet in the review also has in the settings then the Android 7.0 standard scope. You can see a selection of these on the following screenshots:
Chuwi Hi9: Connectivity
The tablet in the test supports all common WLAN networks according to 802.11a / b / g / n / ac (2.4GHz/5GHz), as well as Bluetooth 4.0.
All components worked without problems in my test and provide good range and accuracy.
Chuwi Hi9: Sound and Audio Quality
Chuwi Hi9 also wants to score the sound with the Chuwi Tablet. Of course, this is always good in the list of technical data, but then it is often only marketing.
You can not create a mega effect with such small stereo speakers, but for that volume and size of the tablet, the sound is awesome.
I can not remember hearing such good speakers in such a small case. People sound wise it is the part for the size really mega and so make movies or series even without headphones really fun.
But it has to be said that the Chuwi is more of a well-made effect, and in combination with the good sound chip, a great sound experience comes out.
If you use the tablet for example with a stand on a table, the sound is very good, because the speakers are also directed forward to the user. The overall volume is also good.
Practically, you can switch the mode directly on the notification bar on/off or can be. When activated, the difference is clearly heard.
Chuwi Hi9: Camera
As with most tablets, the cameras are not the purchase criteria and can not compete with the smartphone cameras.
The Chuwi Hi9 has a 5.0-megapixel main camera and a 2.0 megapixel front camera. Both of the quality are no more or less okay.
However, the pictures quickly start to rustle, even if the lighting conditions are still quite good.
If the light decreases, the picture quality also decreases significantly. For one or the other video chat session but still sufficient.
Chuwi Hi9: Battery
The Chuwi Hi9 in the analisis has a 5000mAh and delivers good battery life when paired with the Mediatek MTK8173 + 8.4 2K display.
In the synthetic PCMark benchmark, it achieved 6.5 hours of screen-on-time. Of course you do not manage such values, but on average I spent a good 4-5 hours surfing and watching videos and playing a few games.
Unfortunately, the tablet does not have a quick-charge function, so loading takes a bit longer.
To recharge the Lenovo fully it takes about 2.5 hours, 35 minutes for 25%, 1.30 minutes for 70%.
These are not top scores but are still okay. And yes, welcome to 2018, finally you have arrived at the Tablets also in the today’s time and installed a Micro USB connection.
Chuwi Hi9: Conclusions and Reviews
The Chuwi Hi9 in our reviews is first and foremost a small sound monster for me and delivers a grandiose display quality for the size. The size of 8.4 inches is ideal for couchsurfing, surfing, playing games or watching videos without getting a “long arm”.
But otherwise it does not have to hide from other tablets, although the Mediatek MTK8173 processor has gotten a bit old, but still provides enough power for the usual applications. The side are sufficient 4GB LPDDR3 RAM and on top of it you get even with 64GB quite a lot of memory. If the memory is not sufficient, it can be expanded with a MicroSD card up to 128GB.
For $205 you get with the Chuwi Hi9 damn a lot of tablet, with good display, performance, memory and above all good sound, so what is missing then still a tablet? – Actually, nothing like that!
