Representation of Xiaomi’s Amazfit subsidiary has begun the rapid growth of its products. At CES 2020, the company introduced many different devices, such as Amazfit AirRun Treadmill, Amazfit HomeStudio Gym Treadmill, Amazfit ZenBuds Earbuds, Amazfit BIP S, Amazfit PowerBuds Earphone and much more. Today I wanted to talk about a new rugged sports watch called Amazfit T-Rex.
The name speaks for itself and apparently the manufacturer is trying to say that the T-Rex watch is as durable and reliable as any in the Amazfit line of smartwatches. The company is positioning the new Amazfit T-Rex watch like the Casio G-SHOCK for an active lifestyle, such as hiking or other heavy expeditions.
Although the rugged smartwatch was introduced a few days ago, you can now buy the Amazfit T-Rex for about $149 at the official store at the link below.
What distinguishes the new watch from its predecessors, such as the Amazfit GTS or GTR? The T-Rex model received a 1.3-inch AMOLED screen, a sports case with the protection of the American military standard MIL-STD-810G, many sports modes and most importantly 20-day battery life.
Pretty interesting instance, so I start the review with unpacking and appearance.
Amazfit T-Rex: Specifications
|Screen:||1.3 inch AMOLED screen with 360 by 360 pixels|
|IP standart:||5ATM waterproof and MIL-STD-810G|
|Standby time:||up to 24 days|
|Size:||472 x 50.2 x 12.8mm|
Amazfit T-Rex: Unboxing
A typical box in size and appearance came to my test. The front surface has a rugged watch pattern, model name and a list of main technical features.
The back surface of the box has the main technical specifications and a list of contents in the configuration.
I found inside the box – this is the watch itself, which received a protective transport film. Also in separate cells, I found a charging magnetic docking station and instructions in various languages.
This completes the configuration and on my own, I would like to note that I was not surprised by the configuration since every watch in the Amazfit line has a similar box and contents in it.
Amazfit T-Rex: Design
As I mentioned, the new Amazfit T-Rex rugged watch is very similar to the Casio G-SHOCK. They are also protected and have good certification. That is, the model has passed 12 tests of the American military standard MIL-STD-810G.
Therefore, the watch is very versatile in various harsh conditions. For example, according to the manufacturer, the T-Rex model can work in extreme conditions from -40 to +70 degrees. In addition, they have protection against the water of standard 5 ATM, so they should not be afraid to get them, but to a depth of 50 meters.
The case is made of polycarbonate, so they are slightly cheaper than the older brother Amazfit GTR, which has a steel ceramic case.
In addition, the manufacturer introduced a rugged smartwatch in five different colors. This is actually good news, as the user will be able to choose the best color suitable for him. The list also has camouflage color, so smartwatches can be suitable for the military as well.
On the front side of the Amazfit T-Rex smartwatch, there is a large 1.3-inch color AMOLED touch screen, which looks very good. The screen resolution was 360 x 360 pixels, but individual pixels on the screen are not visible. I also wanted to note that the screen has protected glass Corning Gorilla Glass 3 and this is not the best protection against scratches or other troubles, but better than plastic.
The screen quality is good, I especially liked that the AMOLED matrix is used, so the colors are very bright and vibrant. The same goes for brightness, I had no problems with readability even in sunny weather.
Around the screen, you can see a rather large frame on which the types of physical button commands on the side of the case are indicated. Here I see down, up, select and move back. Naturally, when you are underwater, the touch screen will not work exactly, that’s why these four buttons on the case are needed to control the watch.
The backside of the smartwatch has already received a standard PPG sensor, which monitors heart rate and pressure, and there are also contacts for charging.
The strap is made of silicone soft material that sits very nicely on the hand and does not rub anything, even during activities, such as swimming.
The standard strap width is 22 mm and, if necessary, you can replace the strap with any other. But the replacement itself is not as simple as on other Amazfit models.
Of course, Amazfit has done its best to produce rugged smartwatches that can easily surpass the functionality of even premium models from G-SHOCK. I do not have any complaints about the build quality and materials used, the watches are assembled without any questions.
Amazfit T-Rex: Connectivity and Features
The first inclusion of an Amazfit T-Rex watch is completely similar to other Amazfit models. I don’t see a big problem and I connected to the Amazfit application without any problems.
First of all, you must install the application from the Google Play Store or Apple Store on your smartphone. Then log in and connect the device to a smartwatch, in our case, Amazfit T-Rex from the list of devices. Then scan the QR code on the watch and the watch is automatically paired with a mobile device.
Now I can talk about the main functions. On the main screen, there are analog clocks by default, the charge level, day of the week, heart rate and steps taken are also visible.
Of course, if you hold your fingers for several seconds on the main screen, a window with various watch faces will appear. Also, in the Amazfit application menu, you can additionally select the watch face you like.
The quick settings menu in the rugged smartwatch is present and to enter it you need to swipe from top to bottom from the main screen.
Here at the top, there is information about the battery level, day, month and year, day of the week, including weather. Also along the contour are the main icons, namely a flashlight, power saving mode, sleep, backlight level, and screen lock.
If you swipe up and down from the main dial, we’ll get into the menu with information on steps taken, distance and calories for one day. Also, another similar swipe will get you to the heart rate section.
A notification window is located to the left of the main screen of the T-Rex smartwatch. The main menu with all the functions to the right of the main watch face.
The list of basic functions includes – this is statistics, heart rate, sports modes, activities, weather, music player, alarm clock, timer, stopwatch, find a phone, compass, and settings.
In the settings menu section, you can control the selection of installed watch faces, screen-on and always-on display functions, and system.
Since this is a rugged sport watch, therefore, the manufacturer has set 14 sports training modes, such as running, walking, swimming, exercising on simulators and much more. To ensure that the results of the lessons are as accurate as possible, the smartwatch has GPS and GLONASS support.
Naturally, there is no Wifi and SIM support in the watch, so you cannot make calls, only receive notifications via the Bluetooth 5.0 wireless connection.
Amazfit T-Rex: Battery
The 390 mAh capacitive battery is used inside the case of the new Amazfit T-Rex rugged smartwatch. According to the manufacturer, the battery life of one full charge will last up to 20 days. Naturally, in real life, the charge will last up to two weeks, but again, depending on the frequency of use of training modes and the GPS module.
If the GPS function is always on, then one charge is enough for only 20 hours of battery life.
The battery charge time will be about 2 hours through the magnetic docking station, which is included.
Amazfit T-Rex: Conclusion and Reviews
The first impression of Amazfit’s rugged smartwatch remains positive. I think that Amazfit representatives will expand their devices not only in the category of wearable gadgets but also in other useful areas of human life.
On the downside, I can attribute this to a rather large size, so the watch is not suitable for a female audience, nor do they have SIM and Wifi support.
Definitely, there are more pluses, for example, a large 1.3-inch bright AMOLED screen, full protection against various influences under the MIL-STD-810G standard and decent battery life up to 2 weeks of use.
Amazfit T-Rex: Price and Where to buy cheaper?
Already now you can order and buy an Amazfit T-Rex watch for $149.99.
Without any doubt, the new watch turned out to be a very interesting wearable gadget.
