Amazfit PowerBuds Pro Review: Real Sports Earbuds with PPG Sensor

Most users are familiar with Amazfit from its smart wearable watch. But today I will have an updated TWS earbud model called Amazfit PowerBuds Pro in my review.

If I have come across a watch with almost every new generation, then my acquaintance with earbuds will begin for the first time. Therefore, I was impatiently waiting for the device to come to me for review, and now this time has finally come.

In this article, I will share with you my emotions about wearing comfort, sound and microphone quality. In addition, I will tell you my impressions of the build quality and materials used.

If you look at the cost, the current price tag for the Amazfit PowerBuds Pro earbuds is only $140. This is not exactly a small price, as for budget TWS earbuds, so my judgment will be pretty strict.

But when looking at the main features of the wireless earbud model, I was surprised by the many interesting features. For example, the Amazfit PowerBuds Pro earbud model has a built-in PPG sensor for determining the heart rate. In addition, there is a function of reminder of the relaxation of the cervical spine and intelligent recognition of running and running modes.

I see all these features for the first time on wireless earbuds, usually such features are found on smart wearable devices such as bracelets or watches. In addition, there is a function of active noise reduction, transparency mode and much more. Also, the manufacturer Amazfit guarantees a comfortable fit and high battery life.

Thus, I propose to start my full and in-depth testing with the appearance and configuration.

Unboxing and packaging

I have a global version of the new generation Amazfit PowerBuds Pro wireless earbuds, since all the inscriptions were indicated in English and other languages. In addition, the appearance of the packaging from Amazfit did not disappoint me this time. Although, before that, I have not come across any products from Amazfit with poor equipment. The packaging itself was made in a minimalistic form from a white and rather dense cardboard material.

Inside the package, I found it directly in the charging case itself, which was protected in a shipping film. Also inside the box, you could find wireless earbuds. Below was a Type-C charging cable, various documentation and a set of silicone ear tips.

The package bundle was very good and I liked everything here, from the appearance to the quality of the materials used. Therefore, let’s talk about the design features of the new earbud model from Amazfit in more detail.

Design, build quality and materials

Considering its cost of $ 140, the Amazfit PowerBuds Pro earbuds should definitely be made of quality materials. In practice, I found that the device really used a very nice soft touch plastic in its performance, which was matte and did not leave any marks after testing.

But so far the manufacturer offers only one color option, and as you might have guessed, only the white version of the earbuds from Amazfit is available. Therefore, I hope that in the future, the number of colors will increase and people will be able to choose the color that they like the most.

As for the build quality, I also had no particular complaints, since the device was assembled very well. While listening to music, the earbuds sat also well and, most importantly, they did not emit extraneous squeaks or other noise. In addition, it is worth noting the presence of protection against sweat and splashes under the IP55 standard. Naturally, you cannot completely bathe or wet the device under running water.

If we talk about the comfort of fit, then as I said, wearing the new model of the Amazfit PowerBuds Pro earbuds was a pleasure for my ears. Each earbud weighed about 6.6 grams and this is not particularly small, but in wearing this weight was practically not felt. In addition, the sound guide was not very deep and the earbuds did not stick out from my ears. For my ear canal, the standard size M size silicone ear tips fit.

As usual, on the outside of the Amazfit earbud case, you can find a touch gesture control panel with an LED indicator. If you look at the bottom of the leg, there are two contacts for charging through the charging box. In addition, there are three microphones on each earbud channel, which perform their function. The device also received a proximity sensor for automatic pause.

Okay, I figured out the appearance of the PowerBuds Pro earbuds, now let’s talk about its charging case. The dimensions of the box were 60 x 47 x 25 mm, and the case weighs about 42 grams, excluding the weight of the earbuds. The box fit into a jeans pocket without any problems and looked like a foreign body, not a human organ.

I also had no comments on the quality of workmanship, since the lid opened without play and there was a pleasant click during closing. At the same time, on the front of the case, you can find an LED indicator with the brand name. A pairing or reset button was installed on the back of the box. But at the bottom of the case is the Type-C charging connection.

Connection, latency and touch control

For the wireless connection of the new model of Amazfit PowerBuds Pro earbuds, Bluetooth with version 5.0 is responsible. I was a little disappointed to see not the latest generation of wireless connections here. But as practice has shown, the earbuds worked very stable and I did not find any interruptions in the signal quality during my testing.

There is no main earbud during the connection, so I could use the PowerBuds Pro, either one at a time or in pairs. But the earbuds did not receive a multifunctional connection, and this also upset me a little, given its not small cost.

Also, Amazfit offers to install its own proprietary application, which is called Zepp. It is available for most operating systems including Android or iOS. In the main menu of the application, I found information about the battery level of the earbuds and the charging case. There are also three noise control control modes – transparency mode, active noise canceling mode, and normal mode.

In addition, there are some pretty interesting and useful features. These include hearing health, cervical spine protection, control gesture settings, music equalizer, wearing sensitivity, running detection, heart rate too high alert, and others. In general, the number of features of the Amazfit PowerBuds Pro earbuds is very extensive compared to other wireless earbuds.

As for the latency level, while watching the video on YouTube, there was no feeling lag at all. But in games, although there was a delay, I could play my favorite shooters, such as PUBG Mobile or Call Of Duty Mobile, with great comfort.

In terms of the functionality of touch control, not everything is so bad either, since there are many different features here.

  • One touch will play, pause and receive a phone call.
  • Double tap toggles the next track or hang up the phone call.
  • A triple tap brings up the voice assistant function on your smartphone.
  • Holding down for 1.5 seconds switches the operating mode from normal to active noise canceling or transparency mode.
  • Also, by tapping, you can check information about the current movement speed, heart rate and other exercise data.

Sound and microphone quality

To be honest, I did not find information about the size of the built-in driver inside the case of the new generation Amazfit PowerBuds Pro earbuds. But on my own I can note, since my personal experience of using wireless earbuds is quite extensive, that the size of the driver should be at least 10 mm.

This is even evidenced by a good margin of the volume level. That is, listening to music in a quiet place over 60% of the volume level is simply impossible. Therefore, to avoid spoiling your hearing, it is best to use the hearing protection feature in the Zepp mobile app that I talked about a little earlier.

I also had no particular complaints about the sound quality. Considering that the Amazfit PowerBuds Pro earbuds will cost you $140, the sound quality was appropriate. For example, the low frequencies had good and volumetric bass. In addition, the middle bass was also present and has a good picture with a bright and rich sound.

But the middle and high frequencies, even at the maximum volume value, did not convey porridge. But I cannot call their sound a strong point, since the detail was rather smoothed out. This, of course, is not a flagship sound, like other earbuds. Because the Amazfit PowerBuds Pro device is geared more towards sports use.

As for the work of active noise cancellation, the ANC function received up to 40 dB of noise reduction. Also, through the mobile application, it is possible to select one of four noise reduction modes. This is the use of noise reduction on the street, indoors, in transport and in very noisy places. Of course, given its cost, active noise cancellation works pretty well, but I can’t call it perfect.

At the same time, the transparency mode will allow you to simultaneously listen to music and at the same time communicate with your interlocutors. In addition, this mode will be useful for urban use, so that you can hear a car horn or other troubles.

As I said earlier, there are three microphones on the body of the Amazfit PowerBuds Pro earbuds and each performs its own function. If we talk about the quality of the microphones during calls. Then my interlocutors liked the clear and clear voice, even in noisy and loud places. For example, ambient sounds were well blocked by the CvC 8.0 feature, and my voice stood out well from the crowd.

Battery and run time

Each Amazfit PowerBuds Pro has a 68mAh battery. That’s why one earbud weighed so much, because the battery capacity was twice that of any other device. Also, do not forget that the battery is needed not only for listening to music, but also for the heart rate function and other important features.

Amazfit PowerBuds Pro Review: Real Sports Earbuds with PPG Sensor

In any case, the battery life without active noise cancellation was about 8 hours. At the same time, if you activate the ANC function, then the battery life will be reduced to 5.5 hours.

There is fast charging on board the earbuds and in 10 minutes of charge you can get about 2.5 hours of listening to music. It took me about 40 minutes to fully charge the earbuds.

Conclusion, reviews, pros and cons

Amazfit PowerBuds Pro are full-fledged wireless earbuds that have received many interesting and most importantly useful functions in the field of sports.

Amazfit PowerBuds Pro Review: Real Sports Earbuds with PPG Sensor

I was pleasantly surprised to find features such as heart rate detection, intelligent running recognition and running modes. And also there is a reminder of the relaxation of the cervical spine. This is not a smartwatch, but still wireless TWS earbuds.

Also, the device stands out for the presence of active noise cancellation, transparency mode and even an automatic pause sensor. In addition, I liked the sound, especially the presence of bass and sub bass.

In addition, the device has good battery life with good microphones even in noisy places.

Of the minuses, I can single out – this is a rather high cost, which does not correspond to its sound quality. Also, the ANC function is not as strong as, for example, competitors for a lower cost.

Price and where to buy cheaper?

If you are still interested in the new sports wireless earbuds Amazfit PowerBuds Pro, then the price tag at the time of writing the review was $139.99 including discounts and coupons.

Yes, perhaps for sports, these Amazfit earbuds will fit perfectly with their functionality and features. But if you wear earbuds for everyday use, then it is better to find another version of the device.
