In Las Vegas, a large number of interesting devices were presented at CES 2020, including from Amazfit. I already wrote about Amazfit T-Rex rugged smartwatches, but today I wanted to talk about the new generation of Amazfit BIP S.
Each of us knows the popular Amazfit BIP model, which received a very wide surge in sales back in 2018. Also, almost everyone was expecting a new generation of BIP 2 in 2019, but this did not happen. The manufacturer decided to release an updated and improved version with the “S” index, but nobody knows when the second generation will be.
The official sale of watches will arrive in early February 2020 at a price of $70. Of course, in Chinese stores, the price will be slightly higher, but I think that it will not exceed $90.
Like the previous generation of the BIP model, the new one received a similar reflective screen technology, but with a lot of colors. In addition, a very lightweight polycarbonate case with a wearable watch weight of about 31 grams, 5ATM standard water protection, built-in GPS and GLONASS, and up to 40 days of battery life.
A very attractive offer from Amazfit, but how they will serve in practice, let’s get down to our first review and I will tell you my impressions.
Amazfit BIP S: Specifications
|Amazfit Bip S:||Specs|
|Screen:||1.28 inch Reflective TFT screen with 176 by 176 pixels|
|IP standart:||5ATM waterproof|
|Standby time:||up to 40 days|
|Size:||42 x 35.3 x 11.4 mm|
Amazfit BIP S: Design
Of course, if we compare the appearance of the two generations of Amazfit BIP and BIP S, then the big differences are difficult to find, but they are present.
I want to tell you about the screen, which received some improvements. The new generation of wearable watches uses a reflective TFT color screen with a size of 1.28 inches and a resolution of 176 by 176 pixels.
Like the first generation, the reflective screen has several advantages, such as very low energy consumption and good readability in sunlight or artificial light. For example, in sunny bright weather, the screen will glow even brighter and readability will be higher than that of IPS and AMOLED technologies.
If we recall that the first generation Amazfit BIP had only 8 colors, then already in the new BIP S model 64 colors are used. Therefore, the image seems much brighter and more realistic than the first generation.
If you compare the screens of Amazfit BIP S and Amazfit GTS, then the difference is significant, the colors of the GTS model are much more saturated and realistic. But a reflective TFT screen has a number of advantages, which I described above, so when choosing a smartwatch, you should pay attention to this.
The screen is protected by glass 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass with 3rd generation. As for a budget watch, protection is acceptable and I’m glad that plastic is not used since it will be scratched much than glass.
In terms of size, the BIP S model received 42 x 35.3 x 11.4 mm. If you look at the front side, I can note that the frames around the screen are quite large, and especially at the bottom, where the Amazfit logo is still located.
As I mentioned, the smartwatch is made of polycarbonate, so the weight of the BIP S is only 31 grams, and without a strap about 19 grams. When I put on my wrist in the first hours, I didn’t feel the weight at all, so I assume that sleeping in them will not be a problem.
On the right side, there is the main power button, which serves to activate the backlight or turn the device on and off.
The backside of the BIP S watch received a new heart rate technology with a PPG biometric sensor and two charging contacts. Nothing unusual and a similar solution is used in almost all wearable devices.
The width of the silicone strap was 20 mm and it is removable, so if necessary it can be replaced at any time. The longest length of the strap in the grip of the wrist was 110 mm, and the shortest 85 mm. The strap is made of a pleasant silicone material, which is convenient to use even while swimming.
Another improvement was the protection against the water of standard 5 ATM if you recall the first generation there was used IP68. In any case, you will have the opportunity to dive to a depth of 50 meters or swim in the pool in hours without any problems.
The new generation has not gone much ahead in terms of appearance and design, but improvements in technology are already visible on the face. Now I wanted to talk a little about the functionality.
Amazfit BIP S: Features and Functions
If we compare the first and the new generation, the first thing that catches your eye is a wider functional of features. For example, already in the new generation Amazfit BIP S officially used 40 different dials for every taste.
Naturally, like almost all Amazfit wearables, the model will connect to the Amazfit mobile app via the new Bluetooth wireless connection with version 5.0. The previous generation was with Bluetooth 4.2.
In the sports training section, you will have access to 10 different types of exercises, such as running, walking, cycling, exercising in the gym and even swimming, and many others. To ensure the results are as accurate as possible, the manufacturer installed integrated GPS and GLONASS.
During the occupation of active loads, a new built-in feature from Huami-PAI will help you, which will monitor your condition. For example, if you overstrain yourself and your heart rate is more than 150 beats per minute, a smartwatch will definitely inform you about it.
Another interesting feature is music control. This feature helps to control the volume and switching tracks, while not taking your smartphone out of your jeans pocket or bag.
In addition, there are standard functions such as alarm clock, stopwatch, timer, weather, notifications, and others.
In the screen settings, you can see the section with the Always-On Display function. A convenient feature, since you will not need to turn on the watch from sleep mode if you only need to see the time.
Amazfit BIP S: Battery
Inside the Amazfit BIP S case, a 200 mAh battery is installed, which showed a very solid result in real life.
For example, in everyday use with daily training of 1 hour, the wearable device will last up to one month. If you use a watch with GPS mode, the BIP S will last about 22 hours.
A full charge will take approximately 2.5 hours via the docking station.
Amazfit BIP S: Conclusion and Reviews
If you have long wanted to buy a watch with a reflective TFT screen, but the first generation Amazfit BIP had very weak functionality, while the new generation BIP S is already much better.
But the advantages surprised me well since now a new screen with more colors than the first generation is used. The lightweight about 31 grams, 5 ATM protection, PAI health analysis, PPG sensor, built-in GPS and GLONASS, as well as music control – a good and nice bonus to the functionality.
Amazfit BIP S: Price and Where to buy cheaper?
At the moment, the Amazfit BIP S is not officially on sale. But it remains to wait a short time for about two weeks, and in early February 2020, you will be able to order watches at a price of $69.99. When the device is officially on sale, I will leave a link with low prices below.
As for the budget wearable watch, the new generation of BIP S has good potential to surpass its older brother Amazfit BIP.
