This is a full and in-depth review of the new Xiaomi Redmi Note 9T mid-budget smartphone, which has received support for the 5G network.
I managed to test all its features, functions, and therefore I have something to tell you about in this article. I will also pay attention to compare the new model Redmi Note 9T with its older brothers and main competitors.
As for the cost, it is very tempting and attractive, as for a smartphone model with 5G network support. The official sale of the device began today on January 11 and you can grab the version with 4/64 GB of memory for only $190. But the version with 4/128 GB of memory will cost you $250.
Please note that this offer will only be valid until January 15th. After that, the price tag will be higher, so if you want to buy a new smartphone, then now will be the best time.
The technical component I can attribute is a modern Dimensity 800U processor and a 48-megapixel main camera module. Attractive appearance, support for dual slots for a SIM card and a memory card at the same time. Another important bonus is the presence of an NFC module, 5000 mAh battery capacity with 18W fast charging.
I recently managed to test the main competitor of the new Redmi Note 9T 5G – it was the Realme Q2 Pro. But can a smartphone from Redmi company surprise and conquer me? Let’s take a closer look at the detailed test and I plan to start with unpacking.

Unboxing and packaging
Well, the new Redmi Note 9T 5G smartphone comes in typical and familiar packaging, like most of its siblings. It is a small white box with a picture of the device, company logo, and model name on the front. But on the side, you can see the memory version and other information about the company.
Remember, I tested the flagship smartphone Xiaomi Mi 11 just last week. So, the packaging of the middle-class smartphones has not yet moved to a new standard and it does not look cut off and the package bundle will be complete. This is good news for me since I did not plan to buy a separate charging adapter and power cable.
Inside the box, I found the usual package bundle for my class of devices. The first thing that met me was a small envelope with a transparent silicone case, a SIM needle and documentation.
A little below the smartphone itself is located in a transporting film and you can see the main features on it. And at the very bottom of the box is a 22.5W power adapter and a Type-C charging cable. But here I would like to note that the maximum charge power was only 18 W.
Design, workmanship, and materials used
Do you remember the legendary smartphone model Redmi Note 8T, which became the bestseller in the mid-range mobile market? I definitely liked the eighth series in the Redmi Note lineup very much. But let’s see what happened to the new generation.
If we compare the materials used, then the new Redmi Note 9T 5G looks worse, as it received a completely plastic case in its execution. I want to note that previous generations of Note 8T and Note 9 Pro 5G had Gorilla Glass 5 on the back.
I do not want to say that the build quality of the Note 9T 5G has become worse, but the manufacturer has really begun to save on its smartphone models. While plastic has its advantages, the first is lighter weight, and from a practical point of view, plastic is slightly better. For example, if dropped, the plastic will not break or crack, as can be the case with glass.
In terms of dimensions and dimensions, the new Note 9T 5G received a slightly larger size than the Note 8T – it is 161.2 x 77.3 x 9.1 mm and weighs about 199 grams. For comparison, the Note 8T was 161.1 x 75.4 x 8.6 mm and weighed 200 grams, while the Redmi Note 9 Pro 5G was 165.4 x 76.8 x 9 mm and weighed 215 grams. Here we can conclude that the plastic really reduced the weight of the device, but the difference in weight is very small.
In terms of usability, I had problems, since the dimensions are quite significant and it is very problematic to call the smartphone compact. As I said, the main competitor of the Redmi smartphone is the Realme Q2 Pro. So, its dimensions are very interesting – they are 160.9 x 74.4 x 8.1 mm and weigh about 175 grams. Therefore, the smartphone from Realme was in the hand a little more convenient and comfortable.
As I said, plastic is used on the back of the new Redmi Note 9T 5G model. But this is not ordinary glossy plastic, but corrugated plastic with a matte finish. Therefore, the case does not leave fingerprints or marks from fingers. Also on this part of the body is a triple camera with LED flash.
As you can see, there is no fingerprint scanner on the back of the device. But it can be seen on the right side near the volume rocker. On the left side, there is a slot for dual nano SIM cards and each slot receives support for a 5G network. There is also a separate slot for a microSDXC memory card. This is why I like mid-budget smartphones, as they have an additional memory card slot on board, but flagship devices are limited in this function.
Above is an infrared sensor for controlling household appliances and there is also an additional speaker. The main speaker is located at the bottom with a Type-C port, a microphone hole and a 3.5 mm audio jack for headphones. That is, the smartphone received stereo sound and this is an excellent function for an inexpensive device.
As for the sound quality, it is very similar to that of the Poco X3 model. The volume level is high and the sound is quite voluminous. If we compare the sound with the previous generation Redmi Note 8T, then there it was flat and not so pronounced. But of course, it makes no sense to compare the sound quality with the flagship models. In addition, I have seen the headphone jack once and I think many users will also appreciate its presence.
Screen and image quality
Well, I figured out the appearance, now I think it’s worth talking about the front of the smartphone. On the front of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9T 5G, there is a large 6.53-inch IPS screen with Full HD resolution or 1080 x 2340 pixels. At the same time, the aspect ratio is 19.5: 9, and the pixel density per inch is 395 PPI. It is also worth noting the presence of a protective glass screen Corning Gorilla Glass 5.
As for its class and price, this is a good screen. Of course, it is not as modern as most devices. Where am I leading this? Since the aspect ratio is only 19.5: 9, and most competitors already have a 20: 9 aspect ratio. For example, these are models such as Note 9 Pro 5G and Realme Q2 Pro.
In addition, if you compare the screens of Realme Q2 Pro and Redmi Note 9T 5G, then there will be a big gap between them. Because, the device from Realme received a Super AMOLED screen, not a standard IPS. Therefore, I liked the picture and image quality of the Q2 Pro better.
As for the maximum brightness level, the screen received 450 nits on the Redmi Note 9T 5G model. As for its class, the brightness level is acceptable and I can’t call it bad. The same goes for the viewing angles, they are quite wide and look good.
The bezels around the screen are quite small and when compared to the previous generation, they really have become smaller. I also liked the round notch for the selfie camera in the upper left corner of the screen.
In the settings, you can choose from many different features. For example, hide the round neckline, but then the top frame will become large. Also, there is a wide selection of settings for color gamut, tint, reading modes, night mode, and more. There is of course a choice of black or white themes.
The last thing to say about the screen of the new model Redmi Note 9T 5G is the 60Hz refresh rate. This again says that the screen is a budget segment and therefore you will not have a high scrolling density, as in the example with screens with a 120 Hz refresh rate.
Performance, benchmarks, and OS tests
The new smartphone Xiaomi Redmi Note 9T 5G uses a processor from MediaTek, namely the Dimensity 800U 5G model. This chipset is built on 7-nanometer technology and has very good technical features in its performance.
Earlier, I already spent a number of tests of this processor, only on a smartphone from Realme. If you are interested in his test results, then you can read the full review here.
As for the new Redmi Note 9T 5G, in the benchmark tests, it proved to be a real monster. This is when compared with the previous generation Redmi Note 8T with a Snapdragon 665 processor. In the AnTuTu test, the device scored about 280 thousand points. It is almost 40% more powerful than its predecessor. You can also see the test results of other benchmarks in the album below.
If we talk about gaming capabilities, then I should mention the game mode. In the settings, you can set the FPS display during games and also increase the power of the processor. I played some heavy and demanding games and I was completely satisfied.
For example, playing PUBG Mobile at ultra-high FPS settings and medium graphics settings started easily and I did not find any lag during the test. In this case, the average FPS was about 40. Then I launched the Call of Duty game, also on medium graphics, but the maximum FPS value. Here, the average FPS was around 60.
Therefore, the gaming capabilities of the Dimensity 800U processor and the Mali-G57 MC3 graphics accelerator are at a high level. But the main problem may be a slight overheating of the case after prolonged loads or games.
The smartphone uses Android 10 with the MIUI 12.5 user interface. The manufacturer promises to update the device to the Android 11 version soon, so it won’t be long to wait for the update. In terms of functionality and settings, Redmi Note 9T 5G is a modern smartphone with a lot of different features. At the same time, the operating system works quickly, stably, and without any delays.
I can refer to wireless capabilities as dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.1 version, fast internet signal, and high accuracy of GPS. Like its predecessor Redmi Note 8T, the new generation has received a contactless payment module – NFC.
Camera and sample photos
The main camera on the Redmi Note 9T 5G has a 48-megapixel Samsung GM1 resolution with f/1.79 aperture. At the same time, the quality of the images is quite high, the details are with good clarity, and the colors are very realistic and at the same time bright. I also liked the night mode, when using it, night shots are not blown out and have good detail.
The second and third sensors on the back of the smartphone are designed for bokeh and macro modes and have a 2-megapixel resolution. At the same time, the image quality is pretty good. Below you can see an album with sample photos of the Note 9T 5G.
A small disappointment was the lack of an ultra-wide sensor. But for that, on the front, there is a 13-megapixel module with an f/2.3 aperture. Selfie quality is pretty good for its class of smartphones.
The camera app has received many different settings and filters. This will allow you to take bright and interesting photos for social networks.
If we talk about video, the main module is capable of shooting at 4K resolution and 30 frames per second, and the front one at 1080P and also 30 frames per second. At the same time, I can note about an interesting macro video mode. But the autofocus work could be a little faster.
Battery and operating and charging times
I think that with every new generation of smartphones, the battery capacity is getting bigger and bigger. For example, the previous generation Redmi Note 8T had a 4000 mAh battery, and the new Note 9T 5G smartphone received 5000 mAh.
If we take into account that the screen size has become larger, then the energy consumption will be higher for the new generation of the smartphone. But do not forget about the presence of a more energy-efficient processor with 7-nanometer technology.
As my practice has shown, during full testing, the device was discharged from about 100% to 27% at the end of the first day. But during my testing, I played demanding and complex games, ran a number of different benchmarks, and much more. Thus, the smartphone can be fully used for up to 2 working days.
I have already said that the package includes a power adapter with a power of 22.5 W, but fast charging is available only at 18W. This is not the first smartphone in the line of devices from Redmi and if you know the reason, write in the comments below. It took me 1 hour and 41 minutes to fully charge the battery.
Conclusion, reviews, pros, and cons
The Xiaomi Redmi Note 9T 5G is another very interesting smartphone that has received many improvements over its predecessor. I was especially pleased with the cost of this model. I think the Redmi Note 9T is the cheapest 5G smartphone.
Also, I can attribute to the advantages – it is an attractive and stylish design. Plus, the high performance from the new Dimensity 800U processor gives you the freedom to play games. The main camera module, as well as a good battery capacity, became a positive side for me.
But there are also enough shortcomings here, for example – this is a typical IPS screen and I would like to get an AMOLED screen, like the Realme Q2 Pro model. I also did not like the plastic case, the previous generation was made of glass. Otherwise, there are also other disadvantages, but they are minor and insignificant.
Price and where to buy cheaper?
As I said, Redmi Note 9T 5G will officially go on sale from January 11, that is, from today. The price tag starts for the basic version at $189, but for the modification with 4/128 GB of memory, the price will rise to $249.
If you have a little more budget, then I can recommend the Realme Q2 and Q2 Pro smartphones. But if you’re on a tight budget, then picking the Note 9T 5G would be a good choice too.
