Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus Review: Full Screen Phone with Exotic Price 2017

Xiaomi is almost “legendary” when it comes to cheap smartphones to build which score with excellent equipment.

Now Xiaomi has brought quite a lot of exotic on the market. A smartphone with a 5.99-inch display cannot be seen every day.

Did the Xiaomi experiment succeed, and is the Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus a really good smartphone mix or should you keep your hands off it?

Let’s find out in the review of the Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus!

Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus: Design and Appearance

Unsurprisingly, the Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus in our test is quite a chunk. Where the smartphone itself is relatively slim and with 180g not overly heavy.

Visually and also from the choice of materials the Redmi 5 Plus corresponds to other Xiaomi smartphones. It is also set here on a metal back with only two small plastic strips on the top and bottom.

The Redmi 5 Plus also has a fingerprint scanner, which is even reasonably well positioned.

The 12-megapixel camera is mounted in the upper together with the dual LED flash.

Back on the front, it is noticeable that Xiaomi apparently did not want to use the 5.99-inch display with on-screen buttons, so the Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus has not capacitive buttons below the display, so it has the full-screen design.

The loudspeaker and also the micro USB charging port of the Redmi 5 Plus are located on its underside, while the headphone port is on the top side.

The Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus continues to feel like a smartphone and not like a tablet. The feel and look are quite appealing.

Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus: Display

The special feature of the Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus is, of course, the huge 5.99-inch display. Xiaomi continues to rely on the Full HD Plus resolution here.

Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus Review: Full Screen Phone with Exotic Price 2017

Accordingly, the display is still pretty sharp. Although one sees in the direct comparison to a 5 inch Full HD Smartphone a certain difference, this is quite minimal.

Generally speaking, the display is good with outstanding too. Colors are strong, contrasts are solid and the angles are reasonable too.

Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus Review: Full Screen Phone with Exotic Price 2017

The display is comparatively cool, but not unpleasantly cool.

In the brightness, I would like to gain 10-20% more, but this is sufficient to read the smartphone in sunlight.

Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus: Hardware and Performance

In the middle and large version of the Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus in the test works the Qualcomm Snapdragon 625.

Before we come to the practical part a few theoretical benchmarks to better assess the Qualcomm Snapdragon 625.

Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus Review: Full Screen Phone with Exotic Price 2017

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 delivers quite well in the various benchmarks. Here, depending on the benchmark, this roughly matches the Qualcomm Snapdragon 808, which, for example, an LG G4 or Google Nexus 5X.

The CPU part of the 625 seems to be stronger than the 808, while the graphics card is weaker.

Compared to the popular MediaTek SoCs, it is difficult to classify the Snapdragon 625. In the Antutu benchmark, this suggests e.g. The Mediatek Helio X10 by 35% quite clearly, in the Geekbench benchmark it looks different. Here, the Helio X10 brings a higher multicore score but loses in SingleCore comparison.

In most other benchmarks, however, the 625 wins again.

It’s probably not a surprise that the UI and most simpler apps work pretty well on the Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus.

By that I mean, of course, surfing the Internet or using Facebook, etc.

In general, the GPS was pretty accurate and quick in my test.

Let’s move on to more sophisticated apps, games. The 08/15 games like Angry Birds, Cut the Rope and so on are of course no problem on a current midrange smartphone.

Even the currently popular Pokemon GO runs perfectly on the Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus, the good GPS is noticeable again.

But also graphically complex games of all Asphalt 8, N.O.V.A 3, Springfield or Marvel Future Fight run mostly on high absolutely playable.

Although there may be a short framerate break here and there, this hardly bothers the game experience.

Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus: Software

Xiaomi relies on a heavily modified version of Android 7.0. This is called MIUI, currently in version 9. Who might have ever used a Huawei smartphone, the user interface will be familiar.

The UI is generally a bit more “colorful” than the classic Android. There is also a significantly changed notification center and settings.

Normally, your smartphone should already come preinstalled with the English language and the Google Play Store.

Whether you like the MIUI user interface or not is, of course, a matter of taste. However, the software is quite something new and also has many interesting features which one does not find in normal Android.

I recommend you look at the screenshots and decide if you like what you see there.

Currently, the Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus in our analisis with the MIUI 9 user interface.

Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus: Sound

If you have a big smartphone, you can also use big speakers, right?

Unfortunately, Xiaomi has only one speaker installed which is located at the bottom of the smartphone.

Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus Review: Full Screen Phone with Exotic Price 2017

But this speaker seems to be above average. At least he is above average noisy. But otherwise synonymous fits the sound quality. Of course, as usual, something is missing the bass but the speaker is overly distorted and otherwise quite useful.

In short, a slightly above-average performance.

The headphone output is again quite standard. Here Xiaomi seems to use the normal DAC from the Snapdragon 625.

Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus: Camera

The Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus has a 12-megapixel camera module with an aperture of F2.2.

Sounds neat at first, but is that too?

Take this for yourself. As usual, all pictures are taken on the highest setting and in automatic mode.

Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus Review: Full Screen Phone with Exotic Price 2017

The colors are strong, maybe a little very strong. The sharpness is also very strong, but the Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus in our review also seems to sharpen properly.

In general, a very good upper-middle-class smartphone camera which in nice weather can easily compete with the flagship smartphones in the world.

Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus Review: Full Screen Phone with Exotic Price 2017

Somewhat harder it does in bad or mediocre light conditions.

Here loses the Xiaomi quite fast to sharpness. However, one must not forget that the MI MAX costs around $240 and for the money is also the low light performance in order.

In short by day top class, in the dark still OK.

Otherwise, taking pictures with the Xiaomi is pleasant. Neither the camera app I noticed negative nor the autofocus.

This is not the fastest, but quite accurate also in the macro area.

Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus Review: Full Screen Phone with Exotic Price 2017 camera test

Images of the Redmi 5 Plus are about 5MB on average relatively large for a 12-megapixel camera, means the images are probably not so much compressed.

By the way, the Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus can record videos in 4K which is not a matter of course for a $240 smartphone.

The quality I would call good. However, I’ve already seen better 4K videos, the sharpness is indeed almost all Full HD records superior, but compared for example with a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge you can see a significant difference in the picture quality.

Nevertheless, I can not fault the video mode in this price range.

One minute of video requires about 300MB of space.

Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus: Battery

The Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus in analisis has a big 4000mAh battery. This is a capacity that you would otherwise rather find on a tablet than on a smartphone.

But what does the Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus do in practice, does the large display eat up the battery completely?

Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus Review: Full Screen Phone with Exotic Price 2017

No, the Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus is a long-time runner. Depending on the display brightness you can expect about 8-12 hours of active use.

This will probably get many users for two to three days without recharging the smartphone.

Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus Review: Full Screen Phone with Exotic Price 2017

In my usual Youtube test in which I stream an hour of video over Wi-Fi, the Redmi 5 Plus consumed only 5% battery at half the display brightness!

Little info to recharge. The Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus supports Quick Charge 3.0.

Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus: Conclusions and Reviews

The Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus in our review is an exotic and not only because of its display size, so you have to think twice about buying.

However, there is little that speaks against the smartphone if you like the size. The feel is good, the performance is great and the battery life is excellent.

Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus Review: Full Screen Phone with Exotic Price 2017

Also the camera and display quality did not leave a bad impression.

I have been tempted to make Redmi 5 Plus my new “primary” smartphone simply because it does so much right and it is a very interesting feeling to use such a large display.

Ultimately, it depends on whether you find the large screen interesting, if so, there are hardly any alternatives anyway and the Redmi 5 Plus offers excellent value for money!

Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus: Price and Where to buy cheaper?

Now we are at the most interesting note is the price. At the moment you can buy a handset Redmi 5 Plus at a good price for only $179.99 with free shipping.
