Xiaomi Redmi 10 Review: Budget Smartphone with Helio G88 and 90Hz

Good day, my readers, today I have on my review a very interesting and most importantly demanding smartphone model from Xiaomi called Redmi 10.

The manufacturer Redmi has decided to make a huge leap over the previous generation of the Redmi 9 device. Now the novelty has received a wide range of different features and functions. Therefore, I was looking forward to the release of this smartphone in order to test it from a practical point of view. And what happened, you can find out about all the advantages and disadvantages in this full review.

As for the cost, at the time of writing, the price tag for the Redmi 10 device was only $150 using various coupons and discounts from Aliexpress. But this price will not last long, and most likely in a couple of days, the price tag will rise to $180 or even higher.

From the technical specifications, the Redmi 10 smartphone stands out for the presence of a 6.5-inch IPS screen with Full HD resolution and 90 Hz refresh rate. Also, the device received a completely new processor from MediaTek, namely the Helio G88. I have the most basic version of the smartphone with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal memory.

In addition, the smartphone was equipped with stereo sound and a new 50 megapixel camera sensor. There is also a 5,000mAh battery with 18W fast charging support. Therefore, at first glance, the smartphone turned out to be very good, but is it as good as the manufacturer Redmi advertises? Let me start my full testing with the unboxing and appearance of the device.

Unboxing and packaging

Not surprisingly, the new model of the Xiaomi Redmi 10 smartphone came to me in the most standard packaging. It is a small rectangular box that has been exclusively made in white. Also on the front one could find a drawing of the device with its name and logo.

I want to tell you a little about the Mi logo, did you know that already in the fall of this year, this logo will not be on all products from Xiaomi? For example, all stores will be renamed from Mi to Xiaomi, and the same goes for mobile devices.

Ok, now let’s talk about the packaging, all the components of the smartphone have been neatly packed in a small but sturdy box. Inside the package itself, I was able to find this, directly, the smartphone itself in a protective shipping bag. Also, the package included a protective transparent silicone case, instructions with a needle for the SIM tray. There was also a Type-C charging cable with a 22.5W power adapter. In general, the equipment was very good, and therefore I propose to find out the main design features of this model.

Design, build quality and materials

On my test, the new smartphone model Xiaomi Redmi 10 was made in gray. But there are also other color options – these are in white and blue. At the same time, each color shimmers slightly and displays different shades of the color spectrum.

In fact, I thought that the new model of the Redmi 10 smartphone would be made of glossy plastic. At least it seemed to me so from the picture, but in practice the device was made of matte plastic. It was very pleasant to the touch and did not leave as many fingerprints during its use.

I also had no particular comments on the build quality, since all the elements were well assembled and fitted to each other. Therefore, I did not find any extraneous noise, creak or other annoying sounds. But there is no protection from water or splashes. While it would be a little odd to see water resistance in a $150 smartphone, wouldn’t it?

On the back of the device, there was just a huge block of the main camera. In total, the manufacturer has installed four different sensors with LED flash. A little later, I will tell you what the new 50 megapixel camera module is capable of, and you can see examples of pictures taken with Xiaomi Redmi 10.

At the same time, the camera module itself protruded slightly from the main body of the smartphone. But this problem can be solved due to the silicone case, which is already supplied out of the box.

On the right side of the Redmi 10 smartphone, there is a power button with a built-in fingerprint scanner and a volume rocker. The fingerprint scanner itself performed very well and the response speed was lightning fast.

Also, the manufacturer Redmi offers another type of protection – this is the owner’s face recognition. This protection method is also quite good and works very well. But I am actually used to using the fingerprint scanner as it is more reliable for me.

If you look at the top end of the smartphone, you can see a 3.5 mm audio jack for headphones, an additional speaker with a microphone and an infrared module. But at the bottom of the smartphone there is already a main speaker and microphone, as well as a Type-C connector for power. At the same time, a SIM tray with two SIM cards and a MicroSD memory card is located on the left end in a place familiar to many models.

If we talk about the dimensions of the smartphone, they were 162 x 75.5 x 8.9 mm, and the weight of the device was about 181 grams. This is not the largest smartphone that I have on review, and in fact, using this model of the device was very comfortable. In the hand, the Redmi 10 did not lie badly, and with the use of a protective case, the dimensions and thickness of the device naturally increased slightly. Ok, now let’s turn on the smartphone and talk about its screen.

Screen quality and features

As I mentioned at the beginning of the review, the new model of the budget smartphone Redmi 10 received not the most bulky screen sizes, which were 6.5 inches. In this case, the resolution of the screen itself was Full HD or 1080 x 2400 pixels with an aspect ratio of 20: 9. With these features, the pixel density per inch was in the range of about 405 PPI.

If you look at the frames around the screen, you will notice that they are not the smallest here. But do not forget that this is a budget device and therefore the manufacturer had to make some compromises.

Also, at the top of the screen, you could find a round cutout for a selfie camera. The notch itself was also not the smallest, but I think this will not be a relatively big problem for many users. I can also note that the screen was protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3 and this cannot please me either.

In terms of image quality, the color gamut was pretty good. That is, the colors were saturated and vibrant, and the viewing angles were also wide. But the main feature of the screen is its 90Hz refresh rate. When first turned on, the screen frequency was set to 60 Hz. I think this is due to the energy saving of the device during transportation. Therefore, in the settings, it is better to choose a 90 Hz refresh rate for a smooth user interface.

In addition, in the settings, you can choose such modes of operation as reading mode, eye protection, night mode, and even choose a color scheme and a dark theme of the user interface. In general, I really liked the quality of the screen, both for a budget and inexpensive device with a price tag of $150.

Performance, benchmarks, games and OS

The new smartphone model Redmi 10 has been equipped with an all-new MediaTek Helio G88 processor. Previously, this processor has not yet been installed anywhere on any device. Therefore, it will be interesting for me to know its performance, both in real life and in synthetic tests.

In fact, this new Helio G88 processor is powered by the Helio G85 chipset, but with some improvements. Namely, the new chipset added support for the use of high-resolution cameras and the use of a higher screen refresh rate.

The processor itself was built on the basis of 12 nanometer technology and had 8 cores in its execution. At the same time, two cores were Cortex-A75 with a maximum resolution of 2.0 GHz, and the remaining six energy-saving cores were Cortex-A55 with a frequency of 1.8 GHz.

In terms of benchmark tests, in the most popular AnTuTu test, the Redmi 10 device scored almost 195 thousand points. This is not the worst indicator for a budget smartphone of this class. You can see other benchmark tests in the album below.

Responsible for gaming performance is the Mali-G52 MC2 graphics accelerator. It showed itself on the positive side during my testing. For example, I’ve been able to play the most demanding games like PUBG Mobile and even Genshin Impact. All games ran smoothly and were quite comfortable to play, but at minimum or medium graphics values. In addition, even after a long session of gaming, the Redmi 10 device did not get very hot.

As I said earlier, my version of the smartphone had 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal memory. You will also have the opportunity to use a separate slot for a microSD memory card format. If you look at the memory speed results, the read speed was 312 MBps, and the write speed was 152 MBps. Not the fastest memory, but do not forget that this is a budget smartphone model.

If we talk about wireless communication, then on board the Redmi 10 smartphone there is a Bluetooth 5.1 version with a two-frequency Wi-Fi module. Also, the device received a fast GPS operation, but I did not reveal the most important feature, since there is no NFC module. Basically, all the sensors worked fine and I didn’t have any major problems while testing them.

I also want to touch on the operating system of the new smartphone model Redmi 10. It was equipped with Android 11 OS with MIUI 12.5 user interface. This is the most recent version of both the user interface and the operating system. In addition, I had a smartphone on the review with a global version of the firmware and everything you need for full use was here. That is, Google services and applications have already been installed on the smartphone.

In terms of the performance of the smartphone, the new budget model from Xiaomi worked very smoothly and, most importantly, quickly. And if you also select a 90 Hz refresh rate, then flipping through pages on social networks or settings will be very smooth.

Camera and sample photos

The main camera module from Xiaomi Redmi 10 has a 50-megapixel main camera sensor. In fact, I have never seen a device from Redmi with such a resolution, and I hope my acquaintance will pass in a positive way. The second camera module already has 8-megapixel resolution, and it was created for ultra-wide shots. At the same time, the third and fourth sensors used a 2-megapixel resolution and performed the macro and bokeh modes.

Xiaomi Redmi 10 Review: Budget Smartphone with Helio G88 and 90Hz

With the exception of the 50MP sensor, all the other three modules were familiar to me. Therefore, they did not give me much surprise, but the main sensor showed itself very well. For example, the detail of the images was an order of magnitude better than that of the sensor with 48-megapixel resolution. I also liked the night shots, which showed vivid colors with rich objects.

An 8-megapixel sensor with an f/2.0 aperture is responsible for the selfie camera. You can see the quality of the photos from the album below. If in good lighting the quality of photos on the front camera was more or less good, then in poor lighting, the image quality dropped significantly and for the worse.

The camera application has sections and modes that are familiar to me. For example, here I was able to find such modes as photo, video, pro, portrait, and more. The section also has night mode, 50MP mode, video clip, slow motion, time-lapse and others. The maximum video recording value was Full HD and 30 frames per second, both on the main and on the front camera module.

Battery and run time

You don’t have to worry about the battery life of the new smartphone model Redmi 10, since a 5000 mAh battery is used inside its body. Very good value for a budget and inexpensive device.

Xiaomi Redmi 10 Review: Budget Smartphone with Helio G88 and 90Hz

During my testing, the smartphone lasted about 1.5 days with active use. It is possible to achieve results in 2 days of work, but with an average load. In general, the smartphone stands out for its good battery life and this cannot please me either.

Xiaomi Redmi 10 Review: Budget Smartphone with Helio G88 and 90Hz

Also, a smartphone from the Redmi brand received support for 18W fast charging and a full charge took me about 2 hours and 15 minutes. The device also has reversible charging, that is, you can charge other devices with a power of 9 watts.

Conclusion, reviews, pros and cons

Compared to the previous generation Redmi 9, the new version of the Xiaomi Redmi 10 device has received a number of significant changes and, naturally, for the better.

Xiaomi Redmi 10 Review: Budget Smartphone with Helio G88 and 90Hz

On the positive side, I can single out the presence of an updated design and high-quality assembly. I also liked the combination of using matte plastic, which didn’t leave much fingerprints on the back of the smartphone.

In addition, the Redmi 10 device has good performance thanks to the new Helio G88 processor. I also liked the quality of the screen with a 90Hz refresh rate. The main 50-megapixel sensor showed itself also from a worthy side, as well as the battery with a capacity of 5000 mAh.

Xiaomi Redmi 10 Review: Budget Smartphone with Helio G88 and 90Hz

But although there are drawbacks, given their cost, I cannot call them relatively strong. For example, the smartphone did not get the fast speed of the built-in memory. Also I would like to get higher video resolution and others.

Price and where to buy cheaper?

At the time of this writing, the last summer sale on Aliexpress was taking place, so the price tag on the Redmi 10 was very tempting at around $149.99.

I understand that the price will not be like this all the time and in a couple of days it will rise by several tens of dollars. Therefore, even with a price tag of $170-180, it will be simply difficult to get better features than the model from Redmi. Thus, I can certainly recommend this smartphone model for purchase.
