Xiaomi Mi A2: Unboxing

The second generation smartphone with Android one has a very similar design as the first one. This is a white box with the inscriptions Mi A2 and androidone.

On the reverse side of the box, we see the main characteristics and equipment of the device.

Let’s see what’s inside the Mi A2 box. Here we see a separate box in which is a black silicone case, also here is a 3.5mm audio jack connector up to USB Type-C and a sim-needle.

Next, the phone Mi A2 with a protective film, which also wrote the main characteristics.

And the last one is a charger with 5V and 2A charging and a USB Type-C cable.

In general, this is standard equipment, but I would like to have a charger with fast charging.

Xiaomi Mi A2: Design and Appearance

The Xiaomi Mi A1 does not stand out as a phone that is unique in design, but it has a pleasing appearance to the eye.

Xiaomi Mi A2 In-depth Review: Second Generation Pure Android Phone

It has a metallic body, which produces a pleasant sensation in the hand since it does not feel large, heavy or slippery.

Xiaomi Mi A2 In-depth Review: Second Generation Pure Android Phone

In the upper frame, in addition to the sensors, speaker, and front camera, Xiaomi has included an LED notification, something that is useful for many users but that many manufacturers do not include.

The frames on the sides of the screen have an adequate thickness, in line with other smartphones, although there is also room for improvement.

The screen of Xiaomi Mi A2 in our analisis has a traditional 18: 9 ratio, so the phone maintains a classic look.

Xiaomi Mi A2 In-depth Review: Second Generation Pure Android Phone

The back of the Xiaomi Mi A2 offers an attractive look with a minimalist design that reminds us very much that of the Redmi Note 5 Pro or iPhone X, especially in the black finish we have tried.

Xiaomi Mi A2 In-depth Review: Second Generation Pure Android Phone

The Xiaomi Mi A2 has a tough and lightweight metal chassis. The screen is protected by Gorilla Glass 3, which ensures resistance against scratches.

Xiaomi Mi A2 In-depth Review: Second Generation Pure Android Phone

The device is very thin since it has 7.3 mm of thickness and has an average weight of 166 grams, which does not seem to be noticed with the phone in the hand.

Xiaomi Mi A2 In-depth Review: Second Generation Pure Android Phone

The Xiaomi Mi A2 is marketed in a wide variety of colors. The back is available in black, denim blue and gold.

As we have already mentioned, the screen is surrounded by quite generous frames above and below the screen.

Above the screen, we can find the front camera, the ear receiver, the lighting and proximity sensors and the notification LED.

In the lower part, we find the capacitive buttons of Menu, Home and Back, which normally remain hidden but light up when the screen is turned on.

It should be noted that unlike most phones of Xiaomi so far, the fingerprint reader is not in the front but on the back.

Xiaomi Mi A2 In-depth Review: Second Generation Pure Android Phone

In the back we find a very flat design and, due to the unibody construction, we do not have access to the battery.

In the upper left corner, we find the dual-tone flash and, right next to it, the dual cameras.

The rear camera protrudes slightly from the surface of the phone, so we do not have the certainty that it can not be scratched if we support it a lot on that side.

In the upper half of the back cover, we find the fingerprint sensor, which has an adequate size and is slightly sunken.

If we move a little lower, we can find the logo of Xiaomi, barely visible, and a little below the logo of Android One, which is also confused with the color black.

On the right side of Xiaomi Mi A2, we find the power button and, on top of this button, the volume control. Both buttons have a good feel to the touch and a sufficient tour.

On the left side of Mi A2, we only find the slot for the dual nano-SIM.

The upper part of the phone has a microphone and the infrared emitter.

The bottom of the phone has a USB-C connector in the center. On the left side we find the microphone for calls and video recording, and on the right side, there is the main speaker.

Unfortunately, the Xiaomi Mi A2 is not resistant to dives (in this price range, none is), so we must be careful not to fall overboard.

Xiaomi Mi A2: Display

The Xiaomi Mi A2 has a generous 5.99-inches screen with an IPS LTPS panel and a traditional 18: 9 ratio.

Xiaomi Mi A2 In-depth Review: Second Generation Pure Android Phone

The resolution of the screen is Full HD (2160 x 1080 pixels), which implies a high pixel density of 403 ppi.

Xiaomi Mi A2 In-depth Review: Second Generation Pure Android Phone

The screen of the Xiaomi Mi A2 in the test is very clear and the individual pixels are indistinguishable.

Xiaomi Mi A2 In-depth Review: Second Generation Pure Android Phone

The maximum brightness of Xiaomi Mi A2 is around 430 nits according to our own measurements, which is a pretty low brightness value even for a smartphone in this price category.

Xiaomi Mi A2 In-depth Review: Second Generation Pure Android Phone

The colors are not altered when observing the screen from an angle, but it does show a reduction in the brightness level.

Xiaomi Mi A2: Hardware and Performance

Xiaomi Mi A2 in our review has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 processor which is accompanied by 4GB of RAM.

Xiaomi Mi A2 In-depth Review: Second Generation Pure Android Phone

The Snapdragon 660 was announced in May 2017, so it is a somewhat old processor.

This chip has eight Kryo 260 2.2GHz cores and an Adreno 512 GPU and is manufactured in a fairly efficient 14nm process.

The 4GB of RAM of the Xiaomi Mi A2 is enough for a smartphone with these features, so expect a good multitasking experience.

Below, we present the results of the phone in various benchmarks, which gives us an idea of the power of this Xiaomi Mi A2 compared to other phones.

On a daily basis, the Xiaomi Mi A2 offers a good performance and, in general, I have not encountered problems of slowness when using common apps such as WhatsApp, Twitter, Facebook, Google Maps, etc. although it is noticeable that heavy apps charge more slowly than in other high-end smartphones.

Xiaomi Mi A2 In-depth Review: Second Generation Pure Android Phone

In the graphical section, the GPU has shown excellent results for a phone in this price range.

I’ve tried three demanding games – Asphalt Xtreme, Dead Effect 2 and PUBG Mobile – and all three have moved smoothly.

The Xiaomi Mi A2 comes in three variants with 32, 64 or 128 GB of storage, an amount that can be easily filled if you record videos in 4K resolution, which is one of the capabilities of this smartphone.

Xiaomi Mi A2: Software

The Xiaomi Mi A2 runs Android 8.1 Oreo under the Android One program. This program emerged in 2014 to make it easier for devices with modest specifications to run Android smoothly.

Xiaomi Mi A2 In-depth Review: Second Generation Pure Android Phone

Google requires manufacturers that adhere to the Android One program to touch virtually nothing of the operating system, except aspects of the phone’s own hardware as the camera app.

Xiaomi Mi A2 In-depth Review: Second Generation Pure Android Phone

The result is that the experience of using Android One is similar to that of pure Android.

Xiaomi Mi A2 In-depth Review: Second Generation Pure Android Phone

In the case of the Xiaomi Mi A2, we have an almost pure Android.

In theory, smartphones with Android One are easier to update since the lack of a layer of personalization and third-party applications makes the adaptation tasks are minimal.

I have a 32GB version of the phone of Mi A2 in the test, but there is no memory card expansion.

Xiaomi Mi A2 In-depth Review: Second Generation Pure Android Phone

The clean phone has only 18.25GB of free space, and this is very small for a modern phone. So I recommend looking at 64 or 128GB versions.

Xiaomi Mi A2: Cameras

The Xiaomi Mi A2 has two rear cameras with 12 MP and 20 MP sensors. The first sensor, wide angle, has an aperture f/1.8, and a pixel of size 1.25 μm.

Xiaomi Mi A2 In-depth Review: Second Generation Pure Android Phone

The secondary sensor, telephoto (2X zoom), has an aperture f/1.8, and a pixel of size 1.0μm.

The camera of Xiaomi Mi A2 has focus by phase detection but lacks optical stabilization, so you can not expect great performance in low light conditions.

Xiaomi Mi A2 In-depth Review: Second Generation Pure Android Phone

The camera interface is quite intuitive to operate. On the right, we find the shooting buttons and record video, and a thumbnail of the last captured picture.Besides, we find quick access to filters, options (HHT, Audio, Beauty mode, Square, Timer, Straighten, Tilt-shift, Pan, Manual, Group Selfie) and front / rear camera change.

Within the image itself, we have a button to switch between the wide-angle lens (1X) and telephoto (2X).

Focusing on the quality of photography, below we will analyze some photographs taken with this phone Xiaomi Mi A2.

The image quality captured by the Xiaomi Mi A2 camera in low light conditions is reasonably good for an affordable smartphone.

Xiaomi has done a good job of reducing noise while maintaining an adequate level of detail.

HERE SEE ORIGINAL SAMPLE PHOTOS

The color is also quite true to reality and does not present a yellowish tint as pronounced as we usually find with other smartphones.

Xiaomi Mi A2 In-depth Review: Second Generation Pure Android Phone

The front camera is 20MP with aperture f/2.2 and a pixel size of 1.0μm and allows to record 1080p video. As you can see in the image, the sharpness is not too good but it tends to come out somewhat blurred.

The Xiaomi Mi A2 can record video with 4K resolution at 30 fps although the videos tend to be quite shaky since this phone does not have optical stabilization (OIS) or electronic (EIS).

Xiaomi Mi A2: Connectivity

In the connectivity aspect, the Xiaomi Mi A2 is compatible with WiFi 802.11 a / b / g / n / ac in the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. It also supports Bluetooth 5.0, 3G / HSPA +, 4G / LTE.

The xiaomi Mi A2 lacks FM radio and NFC chip, two absences that for some users may be important, although in the case of the radio there is a way to activate the radio quite simple.

The 4G connectivity is Cat.6, so it can reach theoretical maximum speeds of 300 Mbps download and 50 Mbps upload.

We have done some tests of connection speed both by the 4G mobile network and by WiFi.

The Xiaomi Mi A2 has reached 251 Mbps downlink and 31 Mbps uplink Wi-Fi with a 300/30 fiber optic connection.

Xiaomi Mi A2: Battery

The battery of Xiaomi Mi A2 in the analisis has a capacity of 3010 mAh, a capacity that a priori does not seem very high, but should offer a good autonomy thanks to the processor it incorporates.

Xiaomi Mi A2 In-depth Review: Second Generation Pure Android Phone

In PCMark Work Battery Life 2.0 battery test, the phone has given a result of 7 hours and 45 minutes, which is about the average of what we usually find in mid-range smartphones.

On a day-to-day basis, the autonomy of Xiaomi Mi A2 is good and we should have no problem in reaching the end of the day with moderate use.

The Xiaomi Mi A2 has fast charge QuickCharge 3.0 and, in our tests, the full charging process has taken a total of 2 hours with a fast charger, which is not too fast.

Xiaomi Mi A2 In-depth Review: Second Generation Pure Android Phone

The Xiaomi Mi A2 does not have wireless charging, something that is becoming popular but only among high-end phones.

Xiaomi Mi A2: Conclusions and Reviews

Xiaomi Mi A2 in our in-depth review which brings together a very powerful hardware, within the average range, with the purest Android software possible by Google.

Xiaomi Mi A2 In-depth Review: Second Generation Pure Android Phone

The Xiaomi Mi A2 is a smartphone that does not disappoint, especially when we put the price in the equation, which makes it even more interesting if possible.

A very attractive design, materials with good finishes, a dual camera that makes good photographs, and the cleanest software possible are some of the characteristics that define the Xiaomi Mi A2.

The Xiaomi Mi A2 moves very quickly thanks to a light software and a powerful hardware, although in some occasions it is missing something more of fluidity.

Xiaomi Mi A2 In-depth Review: Second Generation Pure Android Phone

The software is managed by Google, which a priori should allow it to be updated regularly and quickly, although this is not the case, at least until now.

Xiaomi Mi A2: Price and Where to buy cheaper?
