It convinces with a dual camera, which, however, does not quite reach the level of the top Android smartphones. But the Mi 8 costs much less.
Xiaomi Mi 8 is already delivering the next version of its flagship frameless design flagship, introduced in 2014.
Compared to its predecessor, the Mi 8 has a faster processor and a significantly improved camera.
The remaining equipment, however, has hardly changed. The Mi 8 is available with 64 or 128 GB of memory with 6 GB of RAM.
The 256 GB edition even offers 6 GB of RAM and supports more LTE tapes than the standard versions.
Also, it has the LTE tapes common in Europe, including Volume 20. So, let’s see the main specs and features of Mi 8.

Xiaomi Mi 8: Design and Appearance
The workmanship of the Xiaomi Mi 8 is impeccable in the analisis. It clearly shows the device that it has been consistently optimized for a frameless design, which was also in the art world attention.
It has been awarded “as an example of internationally outstanding product design” by several museums.
Compared to its predecessor, the Xiaomi Mi 8 is slightly high (145.2 to 154.9 mm) and wide (70.5 to 74.8 mm), but slightly thicker (7.5 to 7.6 mm).
On a headphone output has Xiaomi waived as with its predecessor. A USB-C adapter for connecting a standard headphone is included. The weight is 175 grams (MIX 2: 168 grams).
Also included is a case that makes the Xiaomi Mi 8 much slipperier and safer to hold. In addition, no fingerprints accumulate on the back of the device.
Xiaomi Mi 8: Display
The 6.21-inch screen in 19: 9 format offers a resolution of 2248 x 1080 pixels. Since Xiaomi installed a Super AMOLED screen, the colors are brilliant.
The brightness is at the default setting (Automatic contrast) at 450 nits. With the “increased contrast” setting, it reaches over 600 nits.
However, this changes the color temperature to warm and the display. In both cases, the display offers good readability on sunny days.
However, iPhone X and Galaxy S9 are even brighter. Compared to the predecessor leaves the display but a better impression.
Xiaomi Mi 8: Hardware and Performance
In terms of performance of Xiaomi Mi 8 in our analisis, there is no reason to criticize. Android 8.1 with MIUI 9.5 runs without blemish and delays.
Equally adequate are the benchmark results, which reach or exceed the level of other flagships. It scores just under 270,000 points in the Antutu test.
Geekbench scored 8828 points in the single-core 2441 and in the multi-core test. Also in PCMark Work 2.0 the Xiaomi Mi 8 achieves a very good value of 8099.
But that’s not all. Even with the willingness to receive wireless, mobile and GPS of Xiaomi Mi 8 scored very good values and can in a direct comparison of the much more expensive Galaxy S9 + partially distance.
Xiaomi Mi 8: Software
The Xiaomi Mi 8 in our review ships with Android 8.1 and Xiaomi’s MIUI 9.5 interface. Unlike standard Android, it does not offer an app drawer and thus places apps directly on the homescreens.
Those who can not handle it install an alternative launcher like Nova. What sets the software apart are two things.
Firstly, it offers a lot of customization options, and secondly, Xiaomi has integrated a full-screen gesture control.
This is so intuitive that you have become so used to using it on other devices in a short time erroneously wants to use.
In a preview window, MIUI 9 informs the user about the changed appearance that accompanies the activation of the full-screen gestures, with an animation.
Likewise, in this section, the gestures are clearly explained, so that it quickly becomes clear how to use them.
A swipe gesture from the left replaces the back button. This is also indicated by an arrow on the left screen. You get to the start screen with a swipe from below.
While the same gesture, if you do it slowly and do not lift your finger first, but then let go, opens the multitasking view.
A swipe from the top left-hand side uses the possibly existing wiping function of an app and, for example, displays an app menu.
As is usual with Xiaomi, the Xiaomi Mi 8 in full review initially only had a ROM that does not have a Play Store and is only available with Chinese and English language support.
Meanwhile, the smartphone is also offered with a Global ROM that contains the Play Store and supports multiple languages, including other languages.
In addition, there is already a customized version of the MIUI.EU forum, which offers numerous optimizations.
Who wants to use this, must unlock the device. For this, you have to make an application to Xiaomi.
After 15 days of waiting, you can then unlock the device with an Unlock tool. For the more adventurous, the first beta of Android P is also available for the Xiaomi Mi 8.
Xiaomi Mi 8: Connectivity
The voice quality is good in the standard configuration of Xiaomi Mi 8, but the microphone could filter out the ambient noise a bit better.
However, the quality can be increased by entering the code * # * # 86583 # * # * in the phone app.
Then the provider check for this mode is omitted and VoLTE is active, which is also signaled in the status bar and when calling in the form of a small HD logo.
With Settings – SIM – the option can now be switched on and off.
Since the Xiaomi Mi 8 supports aptX HD, it offers good sound quality with a corresponding headphone.
However, the audio quality of a Galaxy S9 + is not enough. Neither does the Mi 8 support Dolby Atmos nor does it provide a sound adjustment that matches your own hearing.
Both are found in the Galaxy S9 +, which is better suited for users who set high standards for audio playback.
The internal speaker does not sound bad, but it has to be beaten again by the Galaxy S9 +.
In addition, you have to do without the Bluetooth audio connection to the internal equalizer and the predefined sound profiles for certain headphones.
Xiaomi Mi 8: Cameras
In terms of camera, Xiaomi relies on a dual model with a resolution of 12 + 12 megapixels. The sensor used is the Sony IMX363.
It has 1.4 μm pixels are designed to provide better photos in low-light conditions and fast auto-focus thanks to dual-pixel technology.
The Galaxy S9 also uses such large sensors. The camera also provides optical image stabilization.
The new photo technology provides in comparison to the Mi 8 for significantly better shots.
The camera experts from DxOMark have also documented this in an intensive test. In the photo test, the MIX 2S achieved a score of 99 and is thus no longer far from the Galaxy S9 with 104 points.
In practice, however, there are clearly larger differences in certain situations than the result might suggest. Overall, the quality but fine.
Xiaomi Mi 8: Battery
The built-in 3400 mAh battery in the Xiaomi Mi 8 in the test ensures a long operational readiness, which, however, in StandBy mode is slightly lower than its predecessor.
With a screen-on-time of almost 9 hours convinced the Xiaomi smartphone but by a long battery life in active operation.
The included AC adapter charges the Xiaomi Mi 8 from 0 to 100 percent in less than 1:40 hours thanks to QuickCharge 3.0.
Charging with a Qi charger takes twice as long when charging wirelessly.
Xiaomi Mi 8: Conclusions and Reviews
The Xiaomi Mi 8 offers a price of about $450 for discount offers, it is also much cheaper to have a very good performance.
Its design makes it one of the most beautiful Android smartphones. The performance is excellent and can partially distance even the more expensive competitors in terms of LTE, WLAN and GPS reception.
Convincing is also the user interface MIUI with many customization options and an excellent full-screen gesture control.
However, there are also disadvantages: For example, no microSD card slot is available for a memory expansion.
In addition, the camera is indeed compared to its predecessor much better, but the images in darker light conditions far from the quality of a Galaxy S9 +. But it also costs much less.
