The company Xiaomi introduced a new generation of drone called FIMI X8 SE, which can be a real successor for the Mi Drone 4K. The new drone Xiaomi FIMI X8 SE even becomes quite competitive with DJI Mavic 2 Pro.
The new drone is already available for sale and now you can buy Xiaomi FIMI X8 SE for a relatively small price of $499.00.
The main specs are shooting 4K video, 33 minutes of flight, 12-megapixel IMX378 sensor, and compact dimensions like the DJI Mavic.
The drone has many technical features and is very similar to the DJI Mavic 2 Pro.
Xiaomi is known in the smartphone market and is even very successful in this sector. You could already hear about the previous model Mi Drone 4K, and now the new model boasts great potential for DJI.
Let’s proceed to the full and detailed review of Xiaomi FIMI X8 SE.

Xiaomi FIMI X8 SE: Packaging and unpacking
We received the package within 3 weeks from a Chinese warehouse. The packaging is small in size as the drone itself. Inside the box we found the following components:
- The FIMI X8 SE drone itself with a battery
- Remote control
- USB charging cable
- 6x propellers
- Instructions in English
Xiaomi FIMI X8 SE: Design and Appearance
A remarkable feature of the new drone Xiaomi FIMI X8 SE, in contrast to the Mi Drone 4K, is the folding blades like the DJI Mavic 2 Pro. Therefore, the packaging for the drone and the control panel itself will be compact and practical, which is very important for transportation from far away.
Each propeller, as usual, has its own label from the manufacturer and is presented in gray and gold. Accordingly, they can only be attached to the respectively designated wings.
What impressed us the most is the high-quality design, but it is very similar to the range of DJI drones. Xiaomi FIMI X8 SE in our test has similar dimensions as the Mavic 2 but has slightly different technical specifications (but more below).
The battery shows the current charging status (with white LED lights) when you press a button with your finger. In addition, it has a large capacity of 4500 mAh battery and an effective flight time of almost 31 minutes, although the manufacturer gives a time of 33 minutes. In our test, the autonomous operation of FIMI X8 SE drones was only 30 minutes, which is a very good result.
Also, you have the current battery level in the app on your smartphone. The full battery charge was about 2.5 hours. But you can buy an extra battery if you shoot more than 30 minutes.
The controller or remote control is the very good suit in the hand. It is also lightweight and much smaller than the remote control of DJI models.
On the front panel, on the left and right, there are two control knobs with which you can control the drone up or down, as well as in all directions.
The front panel has two separate antennas that support the 2.4 GHz signal to transmit HD images live to the phone.
Your smartphone is connected via USB cable to the remote control. The battery cannot be removed from the Xiaomi FIMI X8 SE remote control.
On the left front of the remote control, there is a power button and a button with which you can allow the drone to automatically start from the ground. On the back of the remote there are two buttons, on the left side the button allows you to start video recording, and on the right side there is a button for a photo.
In addition, there are two wheels on the left and on the right, with which you can tilt the camera up and down (left wheel) and change the brightness of the LED headlights located on the front of the drone.
Now you are probably wondering why you need LED lights on the front of the Xiaomi FIMI X8 SE drone in our analisis. They illuminate the video in low light conditions so that the image is not too dark and noisy.
Xiaomi FIMI X8 SE: Testing and Flight
Before you can fly into the air with the new Xiaomi FIMI X8 SE compact drone in the test, you need to register through the FIMI Drone app, which you can download for free from Play Store or iOS.
If you already have an application installed, you need to connect your phone to the remote control and connect the two devices to each other via a USB cable or Wi-Fi connection. After that, you can turn on the remote, and the application will automatically connect to the remote and the drone.
For a smooth and stable flight of a drone or drone, there must be at least 13 satellites. Xiaomi uses the Russian satellite system Glonass and GPS signal.
When you first launch or fly the Xiaomi FIMI X8 SE drone, make sure that you have established a connection with the above-mentioned satellites.
This guarantees you a smooth and safe first flight. Now that you are ready, you can press a button on the front of the remote control to automatically raise the drone.
FIMI X8 SE drone takes off and rises to a height of 4 meters. There it awaits further instructions from you.
The flight of the Xiaomi FIMI X8 SE drone is really good, and even with a strong gust of wind, the quadrocopter is stable in the air. In professional mode, the maximum flight speed of the drone is 18 meters per second and can reach a range of up to 5,000 meters.
In our practical test, the range to 4,500 meters was not a problem, after that sometimes there were several problems with the radio between the drone and the remote control.
The drone responds very well to your movements through the control panel. This is commendable, especially compared to some other models. Return to home mode works very reliably thanks to dual satellite communications (GPS and Glonass).
The drone Xiaomi FIMI X8 SE landed just half a meter from our starting point and achieved better results than many other more expensive competitors.
Xiaomi FIMI X8 SE: Photo and Video Quality
From a practical point of flight, we figured out, let’s talk about video moving and photos from Xiaomi FIMI X8 SE in our analisis.
With our testing and flight FIMI X8 SE, the photos turned out good. The color contrast is great both in good and in low light conditions and provides excellent photos.
Photos can be saved in jpg format with a resolution of 12 megapixels. Unfortunately, the drone does not have the ability to save images in RAW format for further processing.
Video recording in 4K resolution with a frame rate of 30 frames per second is really cool and certainly inspires even a professional cameraman. The gimbal system works reliably with the 3 axial mechanism gimbal, and the recording has never been blurred in our videos.
Like other drones, Xiaomi FIMI X8 SE has a variety of shooting modes, such as Cine shot, Smart tracking mode, Flight planning shooting, Panoramas, and the last mode is Hyperlapse.
Xiaomi FIMI X8 SE: Conclusions and Reviews
The new device has a lot of potentials to seize the market of UAVs and slightly push out a series of DJI Mavic models.
The folding design of the FIMI X8 SE will allow you to take the drone to any point of travel, and Sony’s 12-megapixel camera will help you to make high-quality photos or videos with 4K resolution.
The battery life has also been increased and is now about 30 minutes of flight, depending on operating conditions.
In general, Xiaomi FIMI X8 SE in our review has become good successors for Mi Drone 4K and a worthy competitor for DJI models.
