Many devices from the 70mai lineup passed to me for testing. For example, it was a smart compressor or a car starter. Today our hero also belongs to the automotive theme – this is the Xiaomi 70mai A800 dash cam.
The main feature of the dash cam is its high resolution – 4K. I previously tested a similar model of the Xiaomi Driving Recorder 2, but it only had 2K resolution.
Not surprisingly, the new dash cam will cost just over $100. If we compare the price of the Driving Recorder 2 model, the price tag is about $57. Therefore, in this review, I will talk about the main differences between the two models. I will also share my opinion on the image quality of the video.
Let’s talk about other features of the device. This is the presence of a front and rear camera, built-in GPS sensor, ADAS functions, parking surveillance, and even a special night mode.
Thus, let me share about all the functions and how the cameras of the new DVR shoot. But before I tell this, I propose to start my full review with unpacking.

Unboxing and packaging
The new Xiaomi 70mai A800 dash cam comes in a small white box. On the front, there is a picture of the device and you can find the company designation and model of the dash cam. The side ends of the box are marked with the main features and functions.
Inside the box, the first thing that meets me is the dash cam itself with a protective film on the screen. Double glass tape to secure the device to the windshield. Also here I found – a power cable, a power adapter with a cigarette lighter socket.
In addition, the rear camera with power cable comes in a separate box and is sold separately from the main front camera.
Therefore, the configuration is pretty typical and I was surprised that such a large number of accessories could fit in a small box. Ok, now let’s talk a little about the appearance and how to connect the dash cam step by step.
Design, build quality and materials, installation
The new Xiaomi 70mai A800 dash cam has barely changed its design when compared to its predecessor Xiaomi 70mai with a 1080p resolution.
The appearance of the device has received similar dimensions. But only the width of the new dash cam is slightly smaller. In general, the basic design and its features remain the same.
The body of the 70mai A800 is made of matte black plastic. I would like to point out that the build quality is quite high. When driving even on an uneven road, the dash cam practically did not make any sounds. That is, I did not find crushing or squeaking. And all thanks to the good connection between the plastic plate and the device itself. The connection is well rubberized and due to this, there were no squeaks.
Like the previous generation, the objective lens rotates through a large tilt angle. And so you can adjust and set the angle that you need.
Slightly above the lens is the inscription of the model name and the designation 4K ultra HD. But on the front, there is already a large 3-inch screen. But I had a slight disappointment when I found out that the screen is not touch-sensitive. The screen is controlled by four buttons, which are located at the bottom of the screen.
In addition, you can see the power button on the left side of the housing with a hole for the microphone. On the other hand, that is, on the right side, there is a power port, a microSD card slot and a connection for an additional rear camera.
I can also note that there is already a built-in GPS module and a G-sensor inside the body of the dash cam. This is a rare occurrence, since, for example, the GPS sensor is connected separately, which is sometimes not entirely practical and convenient.
The rear camera is easy and simple to install and I had no problems with it. With the help of stickers, it is attached to the rear window of the car. The rear camera is much smaller than the main camera and therefore will not spoil the appearance of the car’s rear window in any way. It is also worth noting that the cable is about 5 meters. Thus, you can install a camera with a good margin on a passenger car.
Now let’s talk about the main features, as well as how the main front and rear cameras shoot.
Functions, features, and quality of shooting
When you turn on the Xiaomi 70mai A800 dash cam for the first time, the device will ask you to select a language. Next, you need to go through a number of settings, such as setting the time, activating the monitoring function in the parking lot, and then installing an application that works over Wi-Fi.
On the main screen of the device, there are four icons at the bottom – these are turning on or off the microphone, recording video, gallery, and settings. In the settings, I found sections such as video and system settings, format the flash drive, reset to factory settings, install the application, system update, and information.
In the video settings, you can select the required resolution, where the maximum is 3840 x 2160 pixels. In addition, there are sections such as setting the impact sensitivity in the parking lot, video recording time, video format, and video encoding.
Now a little about the application, which must be installed via a QR code or simply found in the Play Store called 70mai. Then you need to activate Wi-Fi in the settings of the dash cam and connect to the required network and enter the password that is indicated on the device screen.
After a simple and easy connection, you can watch the live video, and take a photo or view the gallery at the bottom. But the settings in the application are exactly the same as on the dash cam itself. But the application is easier to customize since it uses touch control.
Now I want to talk a little about the sensor itself, which is used on the new Xiaomi 70mai A800 DVR. The device received a Sony IMX 415 CMOS sensor, which shoots with a fairly wide viewing angle of 140 degrees. An important factor is the aperture of the lens and this device received f/1.8. This is a good indicator that is capable of shooting video at night with good detail.
Below I will leave a video with examples of recording the new Xiaomi 70mai A800 dash cam. On my own, I want to say that 4K recording is much better than the previous generation with 1080p and even 2K. Whatever one may say, but the detail is good, the focus over the entire recording area is ideal. Also, I did not find any problems with night time video recording. Even at a great distance, I could easily read the license plates of passing cars.
Conclusion, reviews, pros, and cons
Xiaomi 70mai A800 is the perfect device for any motorist. The dash cam received not only high-quality video recording, both day and night, but also a well-designed user interface with many functions and features.
Parking surveillance will be a useful feature that can protect you from burglary or other troubles. But there were some drawbacks, for example, the device does not have a built-in battery. Therefore, the recording will drain your car battery.
I can also note that the GPS does not work perfectly yet and during my test, the speed was not the same as on the car’s speedometer. But the manufacturer claims that they are working on this problem and will soon disappear.
Price and where to buy cheaper?
Now every user can buy a Xiaomi 70mai A800 dash cam at a good price for only $108.11 with a 47% discount.
Yes, the price tag is twice as high as that of 1080p and 2K models, but don’t forget about the good quality of 4K video recording.
