Vivo X21 Review: Future behind Built-in Sensor in Screen?

Vivo X21 Review: Future behind Built-in Sensor in Screen & Low Price?

In our review of Vivo X21 has launched a mid-range smartphone that positions itself as a competitor to the Mi 6X from Xiaomi.

The Vivo X21 is interesting in that it offers a dual camera with a higher resolution secondary sensor and optical zoom.

In addition, there is a 3.5mm port on board, which has long been deleted at Xiaomi. But is that enough to become a successful competitor?

Vivo X21: Design and Appearance

From the front, the Vivo X21 looks a lot different than you would expect from Vivo phones. The front button is no longer available.

Instead, welcomes a now a 6.28-inch display in 19:9 ratio, which fills almost the entire front with the notch. Thus, the handset looks quite generic from the front.

Nevertheless, the Vivo X21 in our analisis scores points, because the workmanship is successful and the rest of the design looks harmonious.

Vivo X21 Review: Future behind Built-in Sensor in Screen & Low Price?

Vivo relies on a metal case, which makes the X21 look and feels like a premium smartphone.

In addition, it is very slim with around 7.4mm, which gives the design a certain elegance.

One eye-catching feature is the built-in screen fingerprint sensor. This was mounted on the right side slightly deep under the power button and is very easy to reach.

The back of the Vivo X21 looks very clean and tidy. The camera module has been positioned vertically but stands out clearly from the back.

However, since it was placed on the side rather than in the center, the device does not wobble too much on a table.

Vivo X21: Display

The Vivo X21 features a display based on the Super AMOLED technology. This leads to a slim design and a brilliant image since only one layer of glass lies between the eye and the AMOLED panel.

The presentation of the display convinced because it is nice and sharp and offers vibrant colors.

In addition, the presentation looks very realistic color. The color temperature is quite neutral at the factory and can be adjusted in the settings to your personal taste.

A weakness of the display is, unfortunately, the brightness. In bright sunshine, it can sometimes be difficult to read the display.

However, this only applies to direct light irradiation. For the display, glass Vivo relies on an unspecified tempered glass, which remained free of scratches in our everyday life.

Fingerprints hesitantly pick up the glass and are easy to clean. The touchscreen supports 10 touch points and works precisely. There is no noticeable input delay.

Vivo X21: Hardware and Performance

The Snapdragon 660 is a fairly new mid-range chip from Qualcomm. The Snapdragon 660 contains 8 Kryo 260 cores split into two 2.2 and 1.8GHz clusters and one Adreno 512 GPU for graphics.

The difference that results can be measured primarily in benchmarks. In the Antutu benchmark, the Vivo X21 in our test achieves around 140,000 points.

Much more interesting, however, is the question of how much the difference in everyday life makes itself felt.

And here, after more than a week of everyday use, we can say that you do not notice any great difference.

Vivo X21 Review: Future behind Built-in Sensor in Screen & Low Price?

We have already collected some comparative values with the SD835 and also a OnePlus 5 with the chip here, with which we also made direct comparisons.

If you do not pay attention to subtleties, the Vivo X21 with SD660 has absolutely no difference.

And that also applies to games. Without exception, current titles run smoothly at the highest graphics settings. And the subtleties?

Vivo X21 Review: Future behind Built-in Sensor in Screen & Low Price?

These are limited to rarely occurring, minimal stuttering or compared to minimally longer delays when switching between larger apps or opening them.

A waste heat is virtually absent, which also applies when playing. Thermal Throttling will never occur on the Vivo X21.

Memory technology, the Vivo X21 in the review is quite well equipped. You can choose between 64GB and 128GB of internal memory, which provides a decent throughput.

Vivo X21 Review: Future behind Built-in Sensor in Screen & Low Price?

In addition, even the expansion via Micro SD card is possible, which cannot be formatted as internal memory under Vivo’s OS.

Both memory versions of the Vivo X21 come with 6GB LPDDR4X RAM. This settles, however, in terms of speed rather at the lower end of the scale.

However, this does not lead to massive restrictions and the multitasking performance is impressive.

Vivo X21: Software

Also on the Vivo X21 runs Funtouch OS 4.0, which is used on all Vivo smartphones. In our test version, 4.0 was up to date.

At the time of the test, the system was based on Android 8.1 with a February 2018 security patch.

The Vivo X21 is only available in China, but there will be with the English language.

The Vivo X21 brings you the minimalist user experience that Funtouch loves. The system offers quite extensive settings and options for controlling background activities of the installed apps while remaining visually appealing and extremely clear.

Vivo X21: Voice quality and Audio

When playing music through the built-in speaker, the Vivo X21 disappointed us. It does not sound really bad, but it lacks bass/fullness.

Vivo X21 Review: Future behind Built-in Sensor in Screen & Low Price?

At high volume, it can sound a bit uncomfortable, especially when there is an object in front of the outlet (for example in the bicycle mount).

We were pleasantly surprised by the output on the 3.5mm connector. This delivers an enormous volume and a really clear and powerful sound.

Vivo X21 Review: Future behind Built-in Sensor in Screen & Low Price?

The volume level of most other smartphones is already reached on the Vivo X21 to 70%. At 100%, the output is so strong that cheaper headphones begin to scratch. Occasional weaknesses are again on the phone.

The basic quality is good on both sides, but the noise canceling does not convince. As soon as one is in a noisy environment (traffic, people, wind), the other side regularly complains about poor intelligibility.

In a test of Vivo X21 during a storm communication was hardly possible. The handsfree function on the bike is so not usable.

Vivo X21: Camera

On paper, the Vivo X21 delivers a killer camera for the middle class. Whether that is the camera module itself or the software, let’s be sure.

Vivo X21 Review: Future behind Built-in Sensor in Screen & Low Price?

In the test of the camera, we have always noticed how inconsistent the results are. In terms of color, the camera is always right, but pictures sometimes seem muddy.Vivo X21 Review: Future behind Built-in Sensor in Screen & Low Price? Vivo X21 Review: Future behind Built-in Sensor in Screen & Low Price?
And that is completely independent of the lighting situation of the case. Another striking feature is that images with optical zoom generally reflect more details.

This gives the impression that somehow you have gotten more out of the 12MP sensor.

Weaknesses also show up in HDR mode. HDR shots often appear shaky, which is especially true for difficult lighting conditions. In HDR mode, the triggering time is extended enormously, which is probably the reason for the wobbly vulnerability.

In bokeh mode, the Vivo X21 delivers reliably and manages to conjure up a proper bokeh effect in complex scenes, almost without exception, without cutting any edges.

Vivo X21 Review: Future behind Built-in Sensor in Screen & Low Price?

But even here there is a shortcoming. The bokeh effect just does not look real. It looks like the background is being edited with a blur.

Vivo X21: Battery

The 3.200mAh battery in the Vivo X21 in the analisis ensures a good battery life. For average use, one charge will last for two days.

It is striking, however, that the camera draws a lot of power. If you use this intensively, the battery is empty after one day.

Vivo X21 Review: Future behind Built-in Sensor in Screen & Low Price?

Another weakness is the rather high standby consumption averaging 1.6% per hour. This causes the standby time to reach only about 62 hours.

With one battery charge, theoretically, about 9 hours of screen-on time in continuous use are possible.

Vivo X21: Conclusions and Reviews

The Meizu E3 in the review is a noble smartphone with an impressive data sheet. In practice, it does quite live up to its promises on paper.

Vivo X21 Review: Future behind Built-in Sensor in Screen & Low Price?

In everyday use, too many good things have opened up, which lead to the price can longer be justified.

The Vivo X21 also has its strengths and a lot of potentials to be a middle-class killer.

In conclusion, therefore, we can make a clear buy recommendation for the Meizu E3.

Vivo X21: Price and Where to buy cheaper?

Basically, this smartphone is a well-balanced device for price only $573.99 and you can already buy it. I would like to note the new technology of the built-in fingerprint reader in a screen which proved to be good.
