Not long ago I played the review of another Umidigi S2 Pro and the truth is that I was quite surprised. A modest hardware, but at least in my case, had a remarkable performance with a design and construction very successful.
Now comes the Big Brother of the S2 Pro that has created so much anticipation, the UMIDIGI Z2 in our review.
A model that surprised by its design, its screen of 19: 9 ratio and a very attractive price, but that presented some lack that seems to correct this new model.
The UMIDIGI Z2 brings many improvements:
- A screen with resolution FHD Plus of relation 19: 9, that will exploit better than 6.2-inch of the screen.
- A jump of the processor with the P23 model, that without being a top, will undoubtedly improve the performance.
- 6 GB DDR4 memory that will help to help to multitask and streamline the system.
- 64 GB of ROM that will not make it necessary to have SD, which is also possible to install if you wish.
- Android 8.1 nougat in a version of UMIDIGI itself.
- And the battery, which is still the same as 3850 mAh, but which continues to make the phone have a very contained weight.
It is a phone that I wanted to review and see if it really meets all the expectations it promises, I hope to be as happy as it is with the S2 Pro and if possible a bit, being the top model of Umidigi.

UMIDIGI Z2: Unboxing
The box of UMIDIGI Z2 is compact and black in color. As usual, the company UMIDIGI shows us a stylish and durable box.
Let us discover what’s inside. The first thing we see is the smartphone itself with a quality and pleasant cover. Also, there is a sticker with the giveaway.
Below the phone, there is an envelope with instruction in English and a sim needle.
And the last is a charger with the fast charging of 12V and 1.5A. Also here is an adapter with USB Type-C for 3.5mm and a USB cable.
In general, all you need here is. To be honest, I really liked the cover in the kit, since it is really good.
UMIDIGI Z2: Design and Appearance
The UMIDIGI Z2 follows the trend that Apple started with the infinite screen phones. It has a 19:9 ratio screen with a notch above the display, which gives us thanks to that somewhat longer format, 6.2-inches diagonal, being somewhat narrower than a traditional 5.5-inch.
It is a unibody phone, with the glass body, only has a few lines of another color and material in the top and bottom with metal, which I imagine will be to get better reception of the antennas.
You have curved corners and despite the 3850 mAh battery, the phone is quite thin, which makes it more comfortable to grip.
My unit is black of UMIDIGI Z2, I do not know how it will be in the black one, but in this one, the marks are marked very easily. So if you want to have it immaculate you will have to clean it constantly.
We have lateral edges, they are not excessive, but the screen does not arrive from side to side.
In the upper part, we will find the camera, headset and proximity/light sensors. UMIDIGI Z2 in our analisis have notifications led, which is embedded inside the earphone area. I think that it is not the best place since it is not appreciated completely and in that case, it does not fulfill its task.
On the back, centered and in the upper area, we will find the dual rear camera, the flash, the fingerprint sensor and a noise-canceling microphone.
A detail that I like, is that everything is at the same level of the back cover, nothing stands out.
On the right side edge, we have the volume and power buttons, they are the same color and material as the back. They respond well and have no slack.
On the left side, we will find the tray of SIM cards. It is a hybrid slot since we can use it with 2 nano-SIM cards or a nano SIM and a microSD card.
At the bottom edge, we will find the USB type-C connection, the speaker, and the microphone.
In the upper edge, we have nothing since in this model the sound output is made by the same USB Type-C connector, through the use of an adapter.
In short, UMIDIGI Z2 has a beautiful design, is well assembled and with materials of apparently good quality. When taking it feels good and despite its size, having a 19: 9 screen ratio is somewhat narrower, which makes it possible to use it better with just one hand.
In addition, the fingerprint sensor is in a good position, being able to use it without any problem.
UMIDIGI Z2: Screen
The screen of UMIDIGI Z2 in our review is one of the strengths of this phone. 6.2-inches screen with FHD Plus resolution and aspect ratio 19: 9 with the notch above the display, doubles in resolution to normal S2.
It’s an IPS panel signed by Sharp and it looks really good. Even outside it looks pretty good.
Sensitivity is good across the entire surface of the screen. The viewing angles, as is normal on IPS screens are good.
The brightness level is good, both high and low. This allows us to have a good vision outdoors and to adapt it to dark conditions and that does not bother us.
With Miravision we can adjust the color temperature, contrast, color saturation, brightness, etc.
And we also have another section in settings called “Eye Protection Mode”, which allows us to activate a filter for blue light and to choose between 3 adjustment patterns, depending on the external conditions.
The screen to have resolution FHD Plus (1080×2246 pixels), when we access videos that do not have their resolution, do not usually occupy the entire screen.
But simply with doing as we stretch with two fingers on the screen, the image is expanded and we can enjoy their 6.2-inch.
For the moment in what little I have used in a game, has opened occupying the screen completely.
UMIDIGI Z2: Hardware and Performance
As for hardware, we could say that this UMIDIGI Z2 is located in the mid-range, but in some aspects, it is like a high-end.
The UMIDIGI Z2 jumps in a matter of SOC, still riding a MediaTek processor, but we went from the Helio P20 to the Helio P23. The Helio P range from MediaTek is aimed at achieving greater energy efficiency, but with adequate performance.
The Helio P23 would be more or less on the same level as the Qualcomm Snapdragon 625, which places it around 80000-85000 points in Antutu.
As for real life, the performance is also good. Heavy games like Asphalt 9 or PUBG Mobile, the phone works on average settings very well.
In the system itself, we did not find any delays, everything works smoothly and well.
The Helio P23 has a graphical ARM Mali-G71 MP2, which will help us to run most games without problems.
However here we have 6 GB of RAM LPDDR4X, almost nothing, that will help everything to run more smoothly. I think that with four it would work very well, but it seems that the theme tends to more and more of everything.
As for ROM, we also have a lot of capacity 64GB. We just have to subtract about 14GB that has the system, something excessive perhaps.
Below I want to show the results of benchmark tests, such as AnTuTu, GeekBench 4, 3DMark and others.
UMIDIGI Z2: Operating system and Software
The UMIDIGI Z2 in the test comes with Android System version 8.1, but with Umidigi’s own customization, which he calls “UMI OS”.
The phone once connected to the WI-FI downloaded an update that added “Face ID” to unlock the phone, no doubt an interesting novelty and it seems to work well, this without knowing exactly how the iPhone works.
The system of UMIDIGI Z2 has a Launcher without drawer of applications and appears all in screen or ordered in folders, although in its options it allows adding a button that simulates the drawer ordered alphabetically.
The system is quite loaded with applications, starting with the complete Google package, some interesting applications and others perhaps dispensable. For having, in addition to the google store, has 2 more application stores, one of Umidigi own and a second more game-oriented. Two browsers, to give another example.
Despite this, the system moves smoothly, without feeling slowdowns, which may have been noticed at first, after several weeks we will see if the sensations are maintained. I think that 6 GB of DDR4 RAM, is also very guilty.
The ROM is multilanguage, with a menu of settings with personalized icons and that presents some things not translated at all, nothing too serious, but it can be improved.
The navigation buttons are on the screen and we can adjust their position according to what suits us best. It is also possible to hide them to take advantage of the screen.
To customize the Launcher of UMIDIGI Z2, we have a theme application. It only has 5 themes, hopefully, they will add more.
UMIDIGI Z2: Cameras
The UMIDIGI Z2 of our test for the photographic section with a dual rear camera, consisting of the main sensor of 16-megapixels signed by Sony and a secondary camera whose sole purpose is to support the main one to improve the effect of blur or Bokek. It would have been nice if the second camera had been a zoom or something similar.
This camera of UMIDIGI Z2 has a double LED flash, which in principle seems powerful, has PDAF system of focus and f/2.0 aperture. It has support to record in 1080p.
On the front, we have also with dual cameras of 16-megapixels and 8-megapixels with Samsung sensor, with the support of a front led flash to improve the photos in case of low light, but does not have autofocus.
Try to cover the secondary camera to see what happened and if you do it you will not get the bokeh effect.
Within the general configuration options, it allows us to select in which route we want to save the photos and videos. being able to choose between internal or external storage.
It is not a software of the most complete and that offer us to be able to manually adjust the camera, but enough for many users and its use in principle is effective. That if in complicated cases we will notice that absence of manual adjustments.

UMIDIGI Z2: Connectivity
The UMIDIGI Z2 supports 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, but only in the a / b / g and n band, it does not support AC.
The sensitivity of the phone, according to my experience with other phones tested at home, is normal. It does not stand out either because it has the very good sensitivity or bad sensitivity. In daily use, the operation is good, without cuts, running smoothly.
With the only GPS enabled, without network help, I capture the satellites in less than 1 minute.
It remains to be tested on the road with a navigator, to see its accuracy. Tested at home locates me to perfection.
UMIDIGI Z2: Battery
The battery of the UMIDIGI Z2 is 3850mAh, which in theory should offer us enough autonomy for an intense day of use or 2 days of normal use.
But this is a detail that I will confirm later, I believe that after 3 charges I can offer you real data according to my personal use.
To charge the battery, the phone supports PE+ fast charging and for this, it comes with a fast charger, capable of supporting load voltages from 9V/2A.
UMIDIGI Z2: Conclusions and Reviews
The UMIDIGI Z2 in general lines is a phone with outstanding features in our review: FHD Plus screen 19: 9, 6 GB of RAM, 64 GB of ROM, glass body, 3850 mAh battery, etc.
Very good screen, very good amount of memory, large capacity battery, a design frankly achieved and topped with good materials.
Maybe the processor and the cameras are below the rest of the set, but in general, it is a fantastic phone.
Although it moves well in general lines, you notice a certain lack of freedom when it comes to being able to configure it and sometimes it gets a little heavy, I think because of the number of applications in the background it has.
The cameras without being bad, also have some note left. They are not bad during the day, but they do not stand out and at night they lose a lot. I think it’s better to put only one camera and improve the main one, I’m talking about the back one since I do not find much use for the existing one.
To finish and after the comments, it seems like a good phone. I have become accustomed to its screen and design, which are the best. The performance is good in general and despite the problems found, I think it is a mobile to consider.
But the latter will depend on some things. From what Umidigi is improving the soft and the price to which you find it since it moves in a field with a lot of competition.
In spite of everything, good work of Umidigi contributing new airs in this segment.
UMIDIGI Z2: Price and Where to buy cheaper?

During this period, there will be a discount, and therefore you can save about $50 which is a big plus for a modern phone in 2018.
