UMIDIGI S2 Pro Review: Inartificial Design and Helio P25 for Accessible Price

UMIDIGI is a safe bank when it comes to cheap and good smartphones. The UMIDIGI S2 Pro is no exception in our reviews. The smartphone offers on paper only the best hardware including the nice Helio P25, 6GB RAM, etc. and the whole for $300.

But of course, it’s one thing how the technical data on the paper sound and the other how the smartphone beats in practice.

That’s exactly what it’s all about! What are the strengths and where are the weaknesses of the UMIDIGI S2 Pro?

Let’s find out in the test!

UMIDIGI S2 Pro: Design and Appearance

The UMIDIGI S2 Pro in our review looks like a hybrid between iPhone 7 and Samsung Galaxy S8 at first glance. Xiaomi uses an S2 Pro case with a glass back and an aluminum frame.

The back is bent slightly to give the appearance of a thinner smartphone. A special feature here is the aluminum frame. This is polished very smooth, which I had previously seen or felt the Samsung Galaxy S8 for the first time.

Generally, the hand feel of the UMIDIGI S2 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S8 is very similar. Both smartphones feel very smooth, supple and high quality.

There are definitely positives for UMIDIGI such a high-quality case with a $300 device.

But the S2 Pro not only feels high quality, it also looks great! Although UMIDIGI does not use an “18 to 9” aspect ration display which occupies the entire front, the display frames are still quite small.

UMIDIGI has also mounted on the back of a fingerprint scanner, a significantly better position than the Samsung Galaxy S8.

On the bottom of the USB Type-C charging port, as well as the speaker, can be found. If you are looking for a headphone jack with the UMIDIGI S2 Pro, you will be disappointed because there is none!

I’ve been using Bluetooth earbuds for a while, and am very happy with them, but the lack of the 3.5mm connector could certainly disturb some users.

However, one must allow UMIDIGI, that there is also very little space for this. The S2 Pro is a very thin smartphone, still a good deal thinner than an S8. Also, the display is comparatively compact with 6.0 inches.

UMIDIGI remains loyal here and uses a Full HD Plus panel, which I think is a good decision, but later.

On the back is another special feature of the UMIDIGI S2 Pro are the dual cameras. Similar to the iPhone, the UMIDIGI Dual uses cameras with different focal lengths, so you have a 2x optical zoom.

Finally, yes, the UMIDIGI S2 Pro feels like a flagship smartphone and looks like this. The workmanship is impeccable and the S2 Pro is great in the hand, well done UMIDIGI!

UMIDIGI S2 Pro: Display

The UMIDIGI S2 Pro in our analisis has a 6.00 inch Full HD Plus Panel. Sounds little impressive in times where a 2K resolution in flagship smartphones is normal and the first devices come with the 4K display on the market.

However, I find the decision UMIDIGI good here! The display of the UMIDIGI S2 Pro looks good! Colors are clear and rich, contrasts for an IPS panel strong and the sharpness fits.

At 6.0 inches with 2160 x 1080 pixels is just awesome! The text is sharp and easy to read. A real to 2K display can be seen without direct comparison 0.

However, a Full HD Plus Panel also brings some advantages. It’s cheaper, energy is more economical and brighter!

UMIDIGI S2 Pro: Hardware and Performance

When UMIDIGI S2 Pro, the motto is not messed but paddling. UMIDIGI gives the smartphone the brand new Helio P25 including a full 6GB RAM! Added to this depending on the version 128GB memory.

That sounds great on paper, but what about in practice? How is the UMIDIGI S2 Pro benchmarking?

The UMIDIGI S2 Pro is the fastest Android smartphone so far, which I had in my hands! At least on paper, this can match the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus or even pass in many benchmarks.

Impressive for a low price $300 of UMIDIGI S2 Pro!

Especially in the PC Mark Work 2.0 Benchmark, a clear lead for the UMIDIGI S2 Pro came about.

Of course, it should come as no surprise that the hardware’s everyday performance is more than tidy.

UMIDIGI S2 Pro Review: Inartificial Design and Helio P25 for Accessible Price

The UMIDIGI S2 Pro flies downright! The normal apps like Facebook, Twitter, etc. are of course no problem for the UMIDIGI.

Also, games are generally very good, 08/15 games like Pokemon Go are no problem anyway. In high-end games, it often comes down to the optimization, similar to PC games, there are also some games with smartphones that just run better on Exynos or Kirin chips or vice versa.

However, by and large, you can hardly find a smartphone to run better on the game.

Even start times of apps are excellent! Here I feel quite a difference compared to my LG G6 which still relies on the older Snapdragon 821.

Whether this is the Helio P25 or the fast memory I can not say.

What does it look like apart from the pure performance?

Especially in rural areas, LTE Band 20 is quite important for a good reception. If you are primarily in areas near the city, the absence of Band 20 should not bother you.

It is and remains a disadvantage, but for many certainly, a to be hurt.

The built-in WLAN module offers a decent speed including WLAN AC support. However, it only seems to be a 1 × 1 WLAN, which would be slightly worse than the Samsung Galaxy S8.

UMIDIGI S2 Pro Review: Inartificial Design and Helio P25 for Accessible Price

Similar to the Samsung Galaxy S8 brings the Helio P25 but Bluetooth 5 support. Currently, this is not relevant, but that could change in 1-3 years. Therefore, I regard this as a big plus of the Helio P25, compared with for example the LG G6.

The GPS performance was unremarkable, similar to the fingerprint scanner. The latter works as accurate and fast as usual by UMIDIGI.

UMIDIGI S2 Pro: Software

Here it is now a bit complicated. As with all its smartphones, UMIDIGI uses stock Android as the operating system for the S2 Pro in our test.

Of course, in this case, Android 7.0, so all Android apps are running as well.

UMIDIGI smartphones are actually not intended for the Western market, so they actually have no pre-installed Google Play Store or other languages.

UMIDIGI S2 Pro Review: Inartificial Design and Helio P25 for Accessible Price

However, some UMIDIGI smartphones have so-called global versions, which are intended for the international market.

The latter is a special software that has been installed and adapted by the dealer. With such versions caution is necessary, often these are contaminated with viruses and get no updates.

But let’s get to the actual software/user interface.

Android 7.0 provides a complete user experience. You may know this from other smartphone manufacturers who have optically adjusted the Home menu and maybe the settings, but then suddenly other UI elements have a completely different design language.

UMIDIGI S2 Pro Review: Inartificial Design and Helio P25 for Accessible Price

This is different with UMIDIGI, the entire user interface and almost all UMIDIGI apps have the same design language.

This allows you to share your smartphone on “two” screens or Split screen. After activation, there are two operating systems that are completely divided and you can switch back and forth between them.

For example, apps that are on one are not necessarily on the second space, the same applies to photos and data.

UMIDIGI S2 Pro Review: Inartificial Design and Helio P25 for Accessible Price

So here you could set up a “space” for work, as well as one for private use. Both areas are completely independent of each other.

Is this a bit too much, no problem, it is also possible to duplicate only individual apps.

So you can play around with the UMIDIGI S2 Pro software for a while.

UMIDIGI S2 Pro: Sound

At first glance, you might think the S2 Pro has only one speaker, but this is wrong. Like the Huawei P10 Plus or the iPhone 7, the S2 Pro also uses its ear cup as the right speaker.

This will give you stereo sound, even if the earpiece speaker sounds a bit thinner. However, this is only noticeable if the loudspeaker on the bottom is closed. Watching videos on the UMIDIGI S2 Pro is great!

UMIDIGI S2 Pro Review: Inartificial Design and Helio P25 for Accessible Price

Although the UMIDIGI S2 Pro does not yet have the best speakers, it is still much preferable to the Samsung Galaxy S8 or LG G6.

Incidentally, the auricle is also good for telephoning. This is pretty loud and clear.

About the headphone jack, there is, unfortunately, nothing to report, the UMIDIGI S2 Pro has none.

UMIDIGI S2 Pro: Cameras

UMIDIGI S2 Pro uses the dual camera, similar to the iPhone 7. Here, a camera has a standard viewing angle while the second camera offers a “2x” zoom.

You have an optical zoom, so to speak, which can be quite practical. Both cameras have 13 megapixels (the Sony IMX258), but there are big differences in the aperture.

Similar to the iPhone, so you can probably forget the zoom camera in the low light. It will be interesting to see how much difference there is in normal daylight between the two modules.

UMIDIGI S2 Pro Review: Inartificial Design and Helio P25 for Accessible Price

Let’s get to the test pictures. These are done as usual in auto mode and uploaded here 1 to 1. This 1 to 1 version is loaded when clicking.

Well done UMIDIGI! You can not say that otherwise, the pictures of the UMIDIGI S2 Pro are fantastic! This is true in daylight for both cameras. Colors are strong and full, but not oversaturated like the LG G6 and Samsung Galaxy S8.

The sharpness is excellent, especially with the main camera! Also, the zoom camera has a good sharpness, but this is a tick worse than the main camera.

Very positive, however, surprised me the zoom camera macro images. Despite the poorer aperture, the background blur is very good and, above all, beautiful, even if the sharpness is rather moderate!

UMIDIGI S2 Pro Review: Inartificial Design and Helio P25 for Accessible Price

The dynamics are also very neat. In short, in daylight, the picture quality is at the absolute high-end level.

At low light, the UMIDIGI S2 Pro in our review also performs very well, even better than expected. The second camera is, of course, a good deal worse here, but manages to continue to make usable pictures with normal “indoor” lighting, but breaks down quite quickly in subdued lighting.

It is a bit better here for the main camera. This provides about the image quality of an LG G6, which is already very neat! Only by candlelight or quick movements, this camera reaches its limits.

In short, I am very satisfied with the cameras of the UMIDIGI S2 Pro!

UMIDIGI S2 Pro Review: Inartificial Design and Helio P25 for Accessible Price

The camera app from UMIDIGI is “Okay”. This is based massively on swipe gestures to menus etc., which I am not a fan.

Functionally, everything is available, including a useful Pro mode, but somehow I was not so warm with the app.

Another weak point is certainly the AutoFocus. Especially in the macro area, this is quite unreliable. This is partly due to the very large focus area at the tap to focus. Here, the UMIDIGI S2 Pro always tends to focus on the background.

Even when switching between the two cameras, I occasionally had problems that the autofocus completely refused to work.

Here UMIDIGI has something to fix with software updates, otherwise a top camera!

By the way, the video mode of the UMIDIGI S2 Pro is okay. 4K resolution with good colors and contrasts, but without OIS. The software stabilization is sufficient, but not outstanding.

UMIDIGI S2 Pro: Battery

The UMIDIGI S2 Pro in analisis has a 5100mAh strong big battery. That’s a decent capacity for a 6.0-inch smartphone.

How does it look like? Can convince the battery life of the UMIDIGI S2 Pro? Yes, it can! In my usual battery test with a mix of web browsing, playing, social media at an indoor brightness, I achieved just over 10 hours of active use time!

That’s a great value! I suspect here is the rather energy-efficient display and the efficient SOC will certainly do its part.

UMIDIGI S2 Pro Review: Inartificial Design and Helio P25 for Accessible Price

Of course, you get S2 Pro even in less than 10 hours empty, if you play permanently on high display brightness, uploads photos in the background, etc.

Still, compared to many other high-end devices, this is still a good value.

Many users will certainly get by for 2 days without charging the battery.

Incidentally, the UMIDIGI S2 Pro also has Quick Charge 3.0 for recharging.

UMIDIGI S2 Pro: Conclusions and Reviews

The UMIDIGI S2 Pro is an excellent smartphone 2017 for the low price tag, for which the import from Asia is well worth it.

UMIDIGI S2 Pro Review: Inartificial Design and Helio P25 for Accessible Price

For around $300, you get a true high-end smartphone. Of course, this applies especially to the raw power of the smartphone! Helio P25 and 6GB RAM is very neat for this price.

Add to that the high-quality aluminum feel, a strong camera and a great and bright display.

Of course, the camera can not quite keep up with the flagships, but honestly, this would be enough for me, even if two software updates would certainly not hurt.

In daylight/sunshine, we are 100% on Samsung Galaxy S8, LG G6, iPhone 7 level, only in the ultra low light, you can see differences.

Nevertheless, the price/performance fits.
